Midt oppe i
Bare to prøver, en

går jo, men ja. Min guilty pleasure er å gå på
Sørlandsenteret i stedet for.
Mia (markedsføring og ledelse)
Da er det trening. Trening, slappe av og se på TV.
Even (markedsføring og ledelse)
4
Haha, jeg bare sitter igjen på skolen
etter forelesning. Blir fort litt sånn.
Jeg begynner kanskje litt seint, men
jeg får det alltid til. Det går fint til slutt.
Mari (samfunnsplanlegging)
andre sosiale medier.

hverandre, for å beskrive korte, tidsavgrensete jobbmuligheter,
internship oftest foregår utenfor selve utdanningen – for eksempel
annerledes. Her er mobiliteten lavere og stillingsstrukturen
mer stabil.
studenter muligheter for engasjementer.
1. Se etter muligheter for oppgavesamarbeid allerede
tidlig i studiet
masteroppgave, senere i løpet.
interessante arbeidsgivere i regionen, utforske deres hjemmeside
Gode karakterer, interessante
(private) prosjekter (særlig innen IT, tekniske eller kreative fag) og
relevante verv under studietider er minst like viktige.

UIA-student
slapp singel
Mats Vederhus

Master-studenten i Utøvende rytmisk musikk,
Up From the Clay kom ut under artistnavnet EIRA.
Vaktbua.

Battle of the Celibates:
Incel vs. Femcel Cinema
OPINION
Sharmaarke Mohamed
Sports editor
Illustration: AdobeStock // Mud Magus & Olga Rai
From time to time, Hollywood discovers (and rediscovers) depression and decides to sell it. First came the “incel films”, which were
brooding, audacious and violent odes to men who mistake social rejection and occupational discrepancies for revolution. Then, in some
form of karma, we invented the “femcel films”. They are pastel-colored elegies for women who talk to cats, cry in the bathtub, hate their
husbands and write eccentric Substack essays.
Both genres really just explore the same studio note: “Make sadness attractive, but make sure they don’t get a happy ending.”
The Incel Cinematic Universe (ICU)
Incel films are dominated by a familiar and tested plot: sad
man, sadder lighting, society decays. The poster always features
a downtrodden guy in a hoodie staring into the middle distance
with great tremor and deep reflection. Whether it’s Taxi Driver,
Joker, or A Clockwork Orange, these movies follow a similar arc:
Main character’s needs are ignored. Main character takes extreme
action. Main character becomes a cult hero for the incel masses.
Critics sometimes call them “deep
psychological portraits”, where the
main character and their psyche
are being tested, examined
and judged upon for our
pleasure as audience members.
They are the sole focus; the only
focus that matters. We are just
mere voyeurs with twisted fascinations.
Femcel Films: Crying, But Make It Aesthetic
On the other hand, femcel films are powered by
soft lighting, vintage cardigans, and emotional
destruction. Think Promising Young Woman,
Black Swan, or Gone Girl. These women don’t
plot mass uprisings like our incel counterparts.
They manipulate privately, journal publicly, and
make audiences shocked in horror and feel great
empathy for them.
Femcel films don’t end in violence;
they end in realisation, typically. The
main character reaches a satisfying
or complex end that challenges the
story we have witnessed and just
happens to fade away.
The Great Divide
While incel films insist the world is broken and needs changing, femcel films conclude that the world is their oyster. Incel protagonists
take shots at society; femcel protagonists subtweet it. One paints his face like a clown, the other tortures her husband. Yet both live in
cinematic universes where human connection is unimportant.
Toward a United Front
What would happen if the incel and femcel genres merged? Picture it: Joker Meets Gone Girl. He rants about society; she says “totally”,
and they both start a podcast. They fall in love for a very brief time, then break up over differing definitions of labour. Critics call it “a
raw, accurate exploration of mutual delusion.” It wins all the major awards.
Final Thoughts
Maybe incel and femcel films aren’t so different after all. Both are mirrors of our collective loneliness and solitude, just filtered through
different lighting. Grayscale for him, golden colour for her.
Until someone invents midcel cinema, where everyone’s mildly lonely but fine about it, the battle rages on and on…

REVIEW
Adam Gábriš
Writer
Illustration: AdobeStock // nata777_7 & ALLA
Perhaps there is no more exciting event in the music industry this
year, than the release of a new album by the biggest pop star on
the planet. After a fabulous year filled with great releases from the
likes of Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and even
Taylor Swift herself, 2025 has so far been a rather mundane year
for pop music. Therefore, when Swift announced the release of
her 12th studio album on a sports podcast hosted by her fiancé
and her future brother-in-law in August, the world was taken by
surprise. Following her record-breaking Eras Tour, many fans
believed that “Tay” would be taking a sabbatical, and rightly so,
after being on the road for almost 2 years, and releasing a 31-track
double album alongside touring. There is no question about Taylor
Swift releasing a record that would sell poorly; however, not all her
music is destined to greatness, and The Life of a Showgirl is a prime
example of this.
Return of the “pop sound”
One of the most thrilling parts of the album announcement was
the return of the pop-whiz Max Martin and his proven partner
Shellback, as the album co-writers and producers. After a stint
with recent collaborators Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, Swift
decided to team up with the Swedish duo for the first time since
2017. Martin and Shellback co-wrote and produced her most
famous pop bangers of the 2010s, including Shake It Off, Blank Space,
Style, and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. But anyone
expecting something similar from The Life of a Showgirl is in for a
surprise. Gone is the sparkling, synth-driven electropop of 1989 and
Reputation, instead, we are met with easy-on-the-ear soft pop, with
elements of rock accompanied by acoustic guitars, dreamy synths,
simple arrangements and subtle references to 70s disco and 80s
soft rock/pop music. This sonic shift, while unexpected, shows how
willing Taylor is to once again change her sound, and move away
from the tried-and-true formula many associate with Max Martin
and Shellback. It also feels like a reset of sorts after completing a
major chapter of her artistic journey with the Eras Tour.
The old Taylor is dead, please bring her back
The opening track The Fate of Ophelia sets the stage with a love
story that takes the form of a Shakespearean tragedy, albeit with a
fairytale ending. The catchy groove reminiscent of 80s new-wave,
combined with a memorable chorus and a surprisingly toneddown,
refined production, makes for an enjoyable listen and an
instant highlight of the album. Following is the track Elizabeth
Taylor, that draws a parallel with the life of one of the first big
Hollywood stars, whose private life got exposed to the public eye.
This is the second track after Clara Bow, from Swift’s previous
album, to directly compare her to the “It girls” of Hollywood.
Sonically, the track leans closer to Reputation, with bigger drums,
tighter production, and a piano/vocal driven chorus. Another
radio-friendly single is the pop-rock cut Opalite, with a groovy softrock
instrumental verse one could find on a Fleetwood Mac record
that transitions into a sparkly chorus with bright vocals drowning
in reverb, but somehow still maintaining that same groove from
the verse, marking a pleasant start to the album.
Then comes Father Figure, which interpolates a 1988 George Michael
hit of the same name, where Taylor revisits her feud with Scott
Borchetta/Scooter Braun, but this time with a more playful twist
and a “last laugh” moment. It is quite catchy (perhaps owing to the
George Michael original) and conveys Taylor’s assumed character
as a father figure well, perhaps too well, with a certain dark
atmosphere and a sense of control and closure. Next, there is Eldest
Daughter, a piano ballad about love and vulnerability, however,
this is where cracks start appearing. Almost a stereotypical ballad,
where Taylor portrays herself as somebody drowned in sadness
because of how cruel the world is. While featuring some nice
melodies and probably the best bridge of the album, this track is
massively let down by its story, which feels like tilting at windmills.
Corny lyrics such as “I have been afflicted by a terminal uniqueness”
or “I‘ve been dying just from trying to seem cool” make the song
seem disconnected from reality. It is hard to relate to the idea that
Taylor Swift, of all people, struggles with being “uncool“.
Fame fatigue
Ruin the Friendship offers a classic Taylor Swift tale of a high school
crush, this time with a tragic ending. It is a fine pop song, with
nothing really standing out, making it quite forgettable. The whole
song’s premise is strong, however, the messaging is very confusing,
like “I should have kissed him”, but also “maybe not to not piss off
his ex”. Taylor has written many good songs about unrequited love
like Sparks Fly, Enchanted or Gold Rush, however, this one does not
earn its place among them. Following that, we reach even lower
points on the album. Actually Romantic borrows a famous rock
chord progression (used by the likes of Pixies or Weezer) but builds
a song with almost no energy to it. It is a shame because a song
about a woman who hates Taylor so much it can be only described
as romantic, warrants a certain punch and energy. Whether or not
the rumors about Charli XCX being the song’s subject, it feels more
like a sarcastic comment rather than a strong message.
14
Wish List is Taylor’s personal confession, a dream of
a suburban life with a possibility of “two kids” and a
“driveway with a basketball hoop”. Despite Taylor’s
billionaire status, she claims to be uninterested in
material possessions and success, something that
again feels very hollow. Sonically, it is a very listenable
song, with a sparkly synth and a few impressive key
changes, a true rarity these days! What is not so
listenable though is the following track, Wood, Taylor’s
first attempt at disco. However, this audacious
pastiche of the Jackson 5 comes across as borderline
annoying. Not to mention the track’s lyrics, talking
about her fiancé’s “magic wand” that left her feeling
“ah-metized”. Suddenly, you cannot say “dick-metized”
while singing about “a bigger dick” earlier on the
album? This track is surely very personal; however,
“horny Taylor“ is not her strongest suit.
Following is another Reputation-esque track Cancelled,
that deals with judgement and being at the center of
the “cancel culture” – a topic that Taylor has covered
before, but a completely suitable theme for a true
“showgirl”. However, this track is, again, massively
let down by its lyrics. Production-wise a solid piece
that could easily pose as a Reputation “vault track” but
instead feels like a soulless version of “Look What You
Made Me Do”.
The penultimate track, Honey, is an easy “pop-bop”
with a simple hip-hop beat and live instrumentation
that doesn’t really upset, but also hardly captures
anyone’s heart. Quite simply the most boring track on
the album.
Finally, the closing title track tries to tie the bow of the
main “showgirl” theme of this album by going all the
way back to Swift’s country-pop roots, alongside this
album’s only featuring artist Sabrina Carpenter. The
Life of a Showgirl is a little sentimental but manages to
tell a compelling story, and uses Carpenter to contrast
two stars at different points of their career to warn
of a ruthless life of fame. The track concludes with a
theatrical, spoken word ending implying that among
all the media scrutiny, criticism and flashing lights,
Taylor Swift is a true showgirl.
Just as Icarus flew too close to the sun, The Life of a Showgirl “girlbossed” too
hard, and instead became a glittering “money grab”. Going into the album, the
promotional material suggested grandeur and glamour, and while it delivered
on polish, it lacked true intent. Having averted Ophelia’s fate, Taylor instead
became a princess stuck in her own castle, where all is fair in love and war,
but outside world seems far away. Sometimes, even the greatest artists need to
take a break and find new inspiration. For the first time, Taylor Swift appears
to be devoid of her usual spark, and it shows.
Score:
1. The Fate of Ophelia: Good single, memorable chorus, classic Taylor; 8/10
2. Elizabeth Taylor: Compelling story, tight production, fine song; 6/10
3. Opalite: Best song on the album, groovy, good melody, sparkly chorus; 8,5/10
4. Father Figure: Feels “familiar” (thanks George), a good conclusion to the
“masters saga”; 6/10
5. Eldest Daughter: Pretty melody, best bridge on the album, subpar writing: 6,5/10
6. Ruin the Friendship: Fine pop song, quite forgettable, confusing writing: 5/10
7. Actually Romantic: Punk is calling and wants their chords back! The
most anticlimactic “diss track” ever, wasted potential; 2/10
8. Wish List: Easy pop-bop that does not upset nor satisfy. Please bring
back more chord changes! 5/10
9. Wood: Perhaps disco will work out next time Taylor… 1/10
10. Cancelled: So close to Reputation, but still quite far… Lowkey worrying
thematic. 4/10
11. Honey: Does this song even appear on the album? (It is fine, but just that): 4/10
12. The Life of a Showgirl (featuring Sabrina Carpenter): Thank God for
the feature! Nice callback to the roots, brings somewhat of a closure; 5/10

Symbolic acts have no place at this stage of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Gaza Strip is
running on empty, with hardly any humanitarian
aid due to the Israeli blockade. The Palestinian
people are experiencing a devastating
genocide that, in addition to killing people,
erases the Palestinian identity by every
means. Israel has bombed hundreds
of schools and destroyed all
the universities in the Gaza
Strip. On January 17, 2024,
they destroyed the last
remaining university,
Israa University,
located in the
southern Gaza
Strip.
It‘s
been
two years
since this
extermination
began, and since
then, many countries
have shown solidarity
with the Palestinian people
and proposed different ways
to help. Globally, there is a strong
sense of empathy that seeks to
perpetuate the culture and identity of
an entire nation.
Education is one of the most important ways
to pass this culture and spirit of research to
new generations, and the Palestinian people face
increasing obstacles to developing an adequate
academic process. All of Gaza‘s universities have
been destroyed, and, meanwhile, the lives of many
professors and students have been lost. It is a
desperate situation both on a human and academic
level, as Palestinians are completely paralyzed by
the constant Israeli attacks.
However, most countries are constantly
considering ways to help the Palestinian people.
One of the latest measures being taken comes
from Irish universities. For the past month, 11
Irish universities have welcomed 80 Palestinian
refugee students, so they can continue their
studies and escape the threatening reality from
which they come. Another country recently taking
this initiative is Italy, with 35 higher education
institutions creating 97 scholarships for Palestinian
students. And what about the University of Agder?
How does it propose showing solidarity and help
in this situation?
Sunniva Whittaker, rector of the UiA, is clear about
some paths the institution should take to offer its
assistance in the face of such a complex situation.
The University of Agder‘s position on the ongoing
situation between Israel and Palestine is clear:
the University of Agder condemns the attacks on
civilians in Gaza.
“When the war started, we issued a statement
denouncing the attacks on the Palestinian
population and this was decided at the University
Board level. We also said that we would actively
seek ways to help the Palestinian people through
concrete actions.”
Sunniva constantly emphasizes the idea of
preparing “concrete actions,” as it prioritizes the
most immediate assistance possible and supports
alliances between various countries, and with
Palestine itself to achieve specific results.
One of the initiatives that has already yielded
results is Scholars at Risk. This is an international
organization that, since 2000, has worked to
promote and protect academic freedom and
other core values in higher education. More
than 650 educational institutions are part of
this program, including the University of Agder.
Through this organization, the UiA has been able
to host a Palestinian scholar, who is now living in
Kristiansand with their family.
Similar to this program, the UiA also offers Students
at Risk. The main objective of this initiative —
established by the Norwegian Students‘ and
16
TOPICAL
Academics‘ International Assistance Fund (SAIH), and the National
Union of Students in Norway (NSO)— is to identify students at risk
of being denied the right to education or other rights in their home
country. To provide these students with an opportunity to complete
their education in Norway, strengthening them as agents of change.
While they have been able to welcome students from various
countries, such as Zimbabwe and Belarus, the UiA currently faces
many obstacles in bringing Palestinian students, mainly due to the
difficulty of obtaining visas.
“The higher education sector in Norway has tried to exert pressure
on the authorities to enable scholars and students to receive visas [to
enter Norway] swiftly. As a small institution we have to join forces
with our peer institutions.”
However, what the university has learned from hosting students
at risk is that we all have a role to play. Norwegian students must
embrace new students with empathy and understand that they
come from a very different background where normality doesn‘t
exist. The university tries to make its students aware of this through
presentations and discussions with students at risk.
“I think it‘s extremely important, obviously, for the individual
students who come here, but it‘s also important for our [Norwegian]
students, to interact with those who are living under totally different
conditions and who are actually risking their lives to gain the same
rights as Norwegian students take for granted.”
These kinds of ideas help raise awareness in society, a muchneeded
action when it comes to helping and sending support to
a country in need. Along these lines, the university also offered a
visit from Francesca Albanese, an Italian scholar and expert on
human rights:
Sibiu in Romania, Johannes Guthenburg University in Mainz,
Germany, and, of course, Agder in Norway. For the time being, the
institution is looking at the possibility of collaborating within the
alliance to offer courses to Palestinian students.
At the national level, a consortium of universities has been formed to
coordinate online education to Palestinian students; the University
of Agder is not a part of the consortium at the moment, but will
consider joining if this is a useful arena for concrete actions.
“There are a lot of practical hurdles. So we have to move forward in
a sensible manner. We have to start doing something very concrete
because I think everyone is impatient to see a change. […] But we
can‘t have just symbolic actions, organizing lots of meetings and then
nothing concrete happens. So obviously we have to balance a long
term perspective with short term actions. […] I think for a university
such as ours, it‘s best to build on relationships we already have,
because we have already collaborated with Palestinian universities
prior to the war. One concrete action we have taken is to pay tuition
fees for students at a Palestinian university.”
As Sunniva Whittaker says, we must not act out of impatience,
as this does not necessarily lead to real results. Small actions
also contribute, and the University of Agder, like many other
institutions, opts for alliances to offer large-scale proposals. And,
while this is happening, its sense of solidarity continues with
small contributions, because every effort counts in a situation as
desperate as the one the Palestinian people are experiencing.
“We invited Francesca Albanese, the UN envoy responsible for
looking into the genocide accusations to hold a lecture. There was
a huge turnout. This lecture was given within the framework of
our Saturday University initiative whereby researchers from the
university disseminate research to a broader public on relevant
topics at venues not only in Kristiansand but also in Flekkefjord,
Mandal, Grimstad, Arendal and Risør.”
Furthermore, at the international level, the University of Agder
belongs to the European University Alliance. Specifically, the
UiA belongs to the FORTHEM alliance, which is made up of nine
multidisciplinary public research universities. These are the
universities of Valencia in Spain, Palermo in Italy, Bourgogne in
France, University of Latvia, Jyväskylä in Finland, Opole in Poland,

Moon landing 202x
Davide Quintarelli

“Here, am I floating ‚round my tin can
Far, above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there‘s nothing I can do”
— Space Oddity, David Bowie
As we‘re approaching 2026, it feels like we‘re headed for a dystopian
1984. Lo and behold! Some convoluted astral phenomenon might
drag the temporal slider farther back to 1969. No, the hippies aren‘t
coming back. Instead, a rekindled gravitational fever is at play
here. The law of attraction. Some distorted tidal echo is whispering
electromagnetic waves of solitude and longing. Look, up! It comes
from the dark skies above, past the low Earth orbit with its satellites
and space junk. The sleepless mirror, the Moon, our ‘sentimental
friend’, is calling us back.
In what constitutes a classic „history repeats itself“ plot, space race
and flag planting are back in fashion. The red thread in this notso-sci-fi
story, is NASA‘s Artemis program. Under the moniker of
yet another Olympian deity, NASA plans to bring humans back
to the Moon‘s surface by 2027, for the first time since the Apollo
17 mission in 1972. The Artemis program involves three separate
lunar trips and is part of the long-term plan to advance space
exploration and establish a permanent base on the moon — you
heard it — a stepping stone for future voyages to Mars and beyond.
Moon exploration in the 21st century presents a different
geopolitical situation at the roundtable. Though the competition
between the USA and China is the main pull, the situation is more
complex than the 1960s space race that was marked by the USA-
VS-USSR dualistic rivalry in the Cold War. Since the last manned
landing in 1972, a range of governmental space agencies and
private/commercial missions have entered the race and achieved
successful landings. Besides, the privatization of the space industry,
partly funded by tech billionaires, suggests a future scenario closer
to a lawless gold rush (they got minerals on the Moon!) with laser
guns and rovers, than a regulated collaboration for humanity’s
sake. The situation clearly demands a closer look.
The Apollo generation
Let‘s quickly recap what happened the last time around. On July
20, 1969, crewmembers of the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong
and Buzz Aldrin, landed the Lunar Module Eagle spacecraft on
Tranquility Base at approximately 20:17:40 UTC, thus becoming the
first humans to ever set foot on a celestial body other than Earth.
This historical event happened just a few hundred kilometres away
from another lunar impact, a less famous and fortunate one. Just a
few hours later, the Soviet mission Luna 15, an unmanned attempt
to bring lunar soil back to Earth, lost contact due to a malfunction
and crashed in the lunar Sea of Crises. Spanning the Cold War era of
tension between the rival powers, the USA and USSR, the outcome
of the Space Race showed which nation had superior spaceflight
capability. Though the Soviet Union won many „firsts“, such as the
first artificial satellite (Sputnik), the first animal in orbit (Laika),
and the first ever human spaceflight (Yuri Gagarin), the success of
Apollo 11 consecrated the United States‘ technological superiority
and concluded the Space Race.
Though conspiracy theories tainted the legitimacy of the landings,
the Apollo era had a profound and lasting impact on culture and
society, and stimulated advancements in science and engineering.
Remarkably, the multiple Apollo voyages brought back a “ton” (382
kg to be precise) of lunar rocks that helped scientists investigate
geochemical similarities with crust of the Earth. Also, the gathered
data and samples provided evidence in support of the theory of
Moon’s formation after a giant impact on early Earth around 4.5
billion years ago. In other words, the two celestial bodies are
similar and might share a past collision, but we
barely scratched the surface.
20
Natural resources
Yet the one space agency that has recently started scratching the
lunar surface is the Chinese national space agency, China National
Space Administration (CNSA). Over the past five years, the CNSA
has successfully retrieved lunar samples from both the near and
the far side of the Moon. The far side remains largely unexplored
and reveals a different geological history and conformation.
These recent missions come at a time when mining rare minerals
is beginning to shape the economic ambitions of countries. On
Earth, China already controls the world‘s largest reserves of rare
earth and critical materials, essential for manufacturing hardware
components in mobile phones, wind turbines, and weapons. In this
context, the exploration of lunar resources and the militarization
of space are becoming increasingly pressing questions, also shaped
by geopolitical tensions.
Digging deeper into the lunar soil is among the objectives of the
International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), a Chinese-Russian
initiative to build an experimental research facility on the Moon
by 2035. The project even included plans for a nuclear reactor that
would power the facilities during the freezing two-week lunar
nights. Constructions will only begin after a series of preparatory
missions to explore and build the foundations for a permanent
settlement. Planned for 2026, the Chang‘e 7 mission will target
the Moon’s South Pole to analyse the deposits of ice, a precious
asset for fuel, life support, and infrastructure. Space assets are
the cornerstone of future explorations, economic activities, and
defence capabilities.
Space warfare
„Space is the world‘s newest warfighting domain,“ Trump said
in his speech at Joint Base Andrews back in 2019 after signing
legislation to establish a new army service: the U.S. Space Force.
This is one of three space forces that include the Chinese People‘s
Liberation Army Aerospace Force and the Russian Space Force. In
a military test in 2021, the latter targeted and destroyed its own
Kosmos-1408 satellite with a direct-ascent anti-satellite (DA-ASAT)
missile. The crash scattered around 1,500 pieces of space debris in
the low Earth orbit, posing serious threats to other orbiting objects,
such as the International Space Station (ISS), and creating shrapnel
fields that will hamper the deployment of new satellites. DA-ASAT
is part of what is known as a kinetic kill vehicle (KKV), a category
of space weapons that builds kinetic energy to attain supersonic,
or even hypervelocity, speed before colliding against its target.
Space weapons can also be aimed at targets on Earth by using
kinetic bombardment, also nicknamed „rods from
God“, that are effective nuclear bunker
busters. Given the high risks
involved, many countries
have called for bans
and regulations.
Space law
Over the years, several self-bans and international treaties have
been signed by many spacefaring nations to regulate the use of
space and ensure safety. The Outer Space Treaty is among the most
important agreements to define the legal framework, principles,
and procedures constituting space law. Although it prohibits the
use of nuclear weapons in space or the creation of military bases,
the treaty does not expressly ban all military activities in space and
allows for military space forces. The Artemis Accords (2020) have
built on such groundwork and, among the key principles, state that
all activities conducted under the Artemis program must be carried
out „exclusively for peaceful purposes and in accordance with
relevant international law“. However, when it comes to resource
ownership, the waters get murky and the legislation ambiguous.
The Outer Space Treaty, written during the Cold War, focused on
arms controls without addressing the newer space activities, such
as lunar and asteroid mining. Some suspect that the USA might
be pushing for private ownership of space resources, a solution
welcomed by commercial agencies like SpaceX and Blue Origin.
It is evident that next years will be instrumental to define and
negotiate new international agreements.
Back we go
At this point, the legacy of Apollo feels like something of a distant
analogue past, frozen in images of cathode-ray tube television,
bulky camera apparatus, and chart records printed on paper and
manually marked with ballpoint pens. An iconography that is
in striking contrast to the recent technological sophistication of
robotic rovers on Mars, like Curiosity, or the YouTube live streaming
from the ISS, where eloquent astronauts explain the nuts and
bolts of space-designed espresso machines, sleeping capsules and
toiletries. Movies have also contributed to mutating the aesthetic
of spacefaring. So, the revolutionary and artistic ambience of 2001:
A Space Odyssey (1968) has given way to the zero-gravity realism,
smoothened by CGI, of recent movies like Gravity (2013) and First
Man (2018).
While the Artemis era will likely not match the level of public
engagement of Apollo — it is estimated that one-fifth of the
world’s population watched the live transmission of the Apollo 11
moonwalk — the 21st-century space race will be critical to establish
a new global order and set the foundations for future voyages to
deep space. The challenges of this generation include promoting
fair and sustainable opportunities on the Moon, adhering to the
principles of international law, and encouraging human-centred
debates and legislation to limit space monopolies and the escalation
of global tensions.
Look! Up in the sky! It‘s a bird! It‘s a plane! It‘s the Moon!
“And now she turns her perfect face
Upon the world below.”
— The Moon, Emily Dickinson

REVIEW
The
SEVEN HUSBANDS
of EVELYN HUGO
by Taylor Jenkins Reid – An Ode to Love
Stella Hacker
Writer
Illustration: AdobeStock // Lisa &
On a cosy Saturday evening, I finished a novel called „The Seven
Husbands of Evelyn Hugo“ by Taylor Jenkins Reid, or more
precisely „Die Sieben Männer der Evelyn Hugo“ since I read it in
German. Shout out to my best friend Maria, who kindly gifted me
this copy.
The book is about the fictional Hollywood Diva, Evelyn Hugo,
who is, after a long time, ready to talk about her numerous and
scandalous marriages. Moreover, Hugo reveals who her true love
is. Her willingness to be candid is, however, tied to one condition:
Monique Grant from Vivant Magazine needs to write her story. A
lot of people are irritated, since Grant does not belong to the crème
de la crème of writers. Nevertheless, Hugo insists on her condition.
Even Monique herself does not understand the reason why she is
chosen. Eventually, she will find out why. Meanwhile, she uncovers
a truth about her past and finds out that it is connected to Evelyn.
At first, I liked the setting of the interview because I had never
read a book like that. However, I need to admit that it was also
kind of annoying for me. I was not invested in Monique‘s story and
skimmed over it at first. I preferred the Hollywood life of an iconic
actress rather than the relationship problems of a magazine writer.
While reading, my opinion about Monique shifted somewhat—
probably due to the reveal at the end. The plot twist nails it. To be
honest, this story takes a turn that I would have never imagined
in my wildest dreams. Chapeau!
The writing style fits the interview setting, but in some parts of
the book, it lacks sophistication and a certain je ne sais quoi. In
the dramatic scenes, the writing style shifts to a rather poetic
style, which kind of felt a bit too try-hard. However, the dull
writing style may also come from the translation. It is impossible
to translate a text that resembles the original to a hundred per
cent since translation always includes interpretations.
Another point that I did not like about the story was how the fact
that Evelyn is a Latin American is portrayed in the story. This would
have contributed to a promising storyline, but the Author chose
to only mention her Latin American heritage occasionally. I think
that this makes the story superficial and unfinished like a draft
rather than a published novel. The story overall has a promising
potential which it does not use to its full extent. Additionally, most
of the characters, including almost every husband of Evelyn, are
written in a flat 2D-ish way. That is why I did not care for most of
them. However, I did like Harry. I had an ambiguous relationship
with Evelyn. I cannot say that I liked or hated her. All I can say is
that she has a character development which others lack. Another
character who I think is well written is Don Adler. Although this
figure is an awful person and I despise him, he felt like a person
who could live outside of the book, like Evelyn and Harry. Celia—
another central figure—annoyed me. She accuses Evelyn of the
same things repeatedly. Of course, she certainly has a point with
some of her blame, but she is also not without fault. The fact that
neither she nor Evelyn address this issue makes Celia‘s character
flat and tiresome.
Although, it might come off like I hated reading the novel, I did
enjoy it. In comparison to other books, I read it pretty consistently
and fast. Something succeeded in catching my attention. The
recurring theme of love and what it means may be what I liked
most. The Hollywood life is not as glamorous as one might think.
Yes, Evelyn Hugo enjoys privileges like being rich and the attention
of a million-audience, but that is only one side of the coin. The
author also shows the drawbacks of being an icon. Like depicted
in the novel, fame can make one addicted. Evelyn prioritises her
career over the ones she loves. The fame she seeks at first becomes
a golden cage. Before I finished reading, I asked myself if she would
figure out that there is more in life than prestige. Also, I wondered
if she would realise it too late. Without spoiling you, I can say that
I liked how the author solved that dilemma.
22
Reid told a story including multiple forms of
love. I liked particularly the message that love is
not always connected to sexuality. For example,
Evelyn and her best friend Harry love each other
in a platonic way, which is no less impactful
even though it is not tied to sexual activities. A
big share of books on the market do illustrate
the best friend as a sidekick or, frankly said, as
a décor so that the hero does not appear as a
loner. In this type of book, the only relationship
which counts is the romantic one. Personally,
I think that is nonsense. I cannot image what I
would do without my friends. Therefore, I liked
the innovative approach of showing the impact
and the importance of this friendship and love.
Furthermore, the novel portrays the complexity
of (romantic) love. One of Evelyn‘s marriages in
particular is filled with passion and intimacy on
one hand but also includes mistreatment and
toxic behaviour. This relationship shows that
love can be hot and cold at the same time. It is
not always easy to hate or stop loving someone,
even though they deserve it.
In contrast, the kind of love which Evelyn gives
to her true love is magical and eternal, like a
sparkler. No matter how much time passes, they
both still love each other. This relationship made
me think. Does true love ever fade away? Of
course, one gets over it eventually and continues
one‘s life. However, getting over it does not
necessarily mean that one forgets one‘s feelings.
Does this person, therefore, continue to love in
some way? Is it even possible to lose one‘s feelings
entirely if one truly loves someone in the sense of
a soulmate or life partner? And does it depend on
the form of love (platonic, romantic, etc.)?
All in all, I liked reading „The Seven Husbands
of Evelyn Hugo“ a lot. It grabbed my attention
and got me back into reading. In my opinion,
the novel shows that the concept of Love is
like an onion; multiple-layered and difficult or
even impossible to categorise. Although I had a
hard time with the writing style and Monique‘s
storyline in the beginning, I can recommend it,
though I must admit that this book has some
shortcomings, like the flatness of the characters.
My indecision makes it hard to rate this book. I
changed the rating multiple times, and I am still
not sure if I agree with the it. However, there are
only a few books which leave me wondering,
philosophising. These books, however, will stay
in my memory forever. This novel—or ode to
love—surely will.

Where military activities once took place, today we find an area
imbued with art, vocation created from the soul, and giving Odderøya
a new meaning. Now, the old barracks have been filled with creative
spirits, those who redefine every corner by filling it with color,
shapes, and imagination. And there, among sculptures, paintings,
music, and photography, lies Ruth Laila, a jewelry artisan and owner
of her own brand: Underlig Smykkeverksted. Her pieces are bold and
full of personality, qualities that the creator herself demonstrates.
She does not only work with silver, but also incorporates all kinds of
unimaginable materials, such as Barbie dolls and baby teeth.
Past the kindergarten, we find Studio 54, the place where Ruth
spends about two days a week creating. She shares it with several
artists from different fields, including her husband.
Ruth Laila, who has many years of experience in the field of
handmade jewelry, has been crafting since she was a child. Whether
it was with tin can caps or other recycled materials she found, she
used her imagination. However, the first official piece she created
was a pendant she designed for an exam while studying at the
Videregående Valley. She tried to recreate a spider in the center. And,
as the artist herself says, “I‘m really proud of it because it went really
wrong. And I was terribly distraught. You know, you‘re 17 going on
18, it‘s the end of the world. But there was a lot of pride in it because it
was the first thing that I really designed from start to finish and that I
really created.”
Her time outside Kristiansand
Ruth lived in Glasgow for seven years. She moved to study a
bachelor‘s degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing from the Glasgow
School of Art. Her decision to study there came after a two-week
internship with Lise Schønberg while still at Videregående Valley,
which inspired her to continue doing what she loved in her own
unique style.
part 2
“She is a very famous jewelry artist here in Kristiansand. I didn‘t know
of her when I was a kid, but she blew my mind. She‘s an amazing,
creative... No, her work is just wonderful.”
From the moment she arrived in Glasgow, she felt at home. The
environment was exactly what she needed to fully immerse herself
into the art world. After completing her bachelor‘s degree, it wasn‘t
more than a few months before the artisan started working at the
award-winning design studio Brazen. There, she gained three years
of work experience that proved to be very interesting for her, thanks
in part to her boss.
“He was a great boss because he taught me a lot about custom relations,
pricing and confidence. A lot of confidence.”
But in 2012, a bank crisis hit her hard, as jobs became scarce and
salaries were poor. This difficult situation forced her to return to
Kristiansand to at least earn money for a few years
and then, hopefully, return to Glasgow. This was her initial plan, but
life had other plans for her.
24
The weird and punk of
Underlig Smykkeverksted
“It took me like three years to realize I wasn‘t going back, which was hard.
Those were three angry years. Very ruthless.”
Faced with this situation, where she had to accept that the life and
connections she had made there were no longer her reality, she ended up
changing her mindset. She started moving around Kristiansand, where she
already knew some artists, and dedicated herself to building her network
and talking more with people in general. That is when everything started to
work. And then she met her husband, one of her greatest supporters.
The jeweler got a job at the traditional Juhls Silver Gallery in Kautokeino,
she spent two years there, and before returning to her hometown, she was
clear that she wanted a space where she could create quietly and without
distractions. So, she contacted some of her contacts from her artist network
and found the workshop where she currently works.
The beginnings of Underlig Smykkeverksted
Against all odds, this brand, which now sells handmade jewelry, was born
because Ruth began offering jewelry courses. And if she wanted to charge
for these courses, she would have to open a real business through which she
would be allowed to get paid by customers. So she had no choice but to come
up with a name for this company, which came to
her by chance after seeing a strange sign in the
clothing store. That is Underlig Smykkeverksted:
“it‘s weird, and strange, and odd”.
different locations (Christmas markets like Jule Market, shops
like Kollektivet, and galleries like The Slottsfjells Museum); to
spreading by word of mouth. She places some emphasis on the
latter, as it‘s important for people to know you and talk about
you. Thanks to this, she has gained special clients who have
requested unique pieces.
Nevertheless, this is not her main job, as the artist seeks to
prioritize her financial stability. In addition to her jewelry
brand, she also has a full-time job at a company that she also
leads.
“I am a daily leader in a small embroidery company as well,
Broderi Sør.”
It‘s an embroidery company that does all kinds of work,
from company logos and children‘s names on clothing, to
embroidery on costumes for bands and festivals. But when she
has the time, she unleashes her artistic side here too, designing
clothing with different messages or, as Ruth says, “shirts and
silly tote bags that just say ‘Nei’.”
What started as a mere formality to get paid,
has grown into a jewelry brand with its own
personality that appeals to many customers. So,
where can we buy her jewelry? Ruth explains
that she uses various means of promoting
herself, although the most useful is Instagram
(@underlig_smykkeverksted). However, she finds
this medium somewhat contradictory to her
ideals.
“I have a long-term goal of getting away from
Meta because I think they‘re shitty people and
I really don‘t want to be a part of it anymore,
but it‘s tough because it‘s where most of my
customers reach out to me, where they find me or
get in touch.”
Aside from this, she also has other ways of
reaching new clients: from her website (underlig.
no), to exhibiting a small sample of her work in

Where inspiration is born
“I like a lot of outsider arts and gothic stuff and pop art and the kind of
nonsensical absurd art [abstract art]. And comic books, I read a lot of
comic books and board games.”
This is the premise from which Ruth Laila‘s inspiration is born, an
artist with a style that she herself defines as “very punky and eclectic.
A bit silly, maybe.” She truly focuses on enjoying and showcasing her
personality through jewelry.
And it is not always easy to create from scratch, even when you have
many sources of inspiration, but Ruth has several tips that help her
with the process: “What I do if I‘m stuck is I just take the crates of
things and then place them on the table and I just start assembling.
Putting it together. And try to write things down when I have ideas,
because you‘ll have a great idea and then you think you‘ll remember
it. You never do.”
The materials she uses are also very important in this creative
process, as this artist is known for using all kinds of elements
collected through the internet, thrift shops, friends, and random
people who know what she does. Thanks to this, she has obtained all
kinds of objects, including human and animal teeth, doll parts, and
even ashes. “I just love collecting weird stuff.”
The juxtaposition of these rare pieces—something that can be gross
and uncommon—with something that‘s supposed to be beautiful
and harmonious, like silver, is what inspires the jeweler and what
she enjoys the most.
However, she also likes to work from trauma and the depths of her
emotions, creating more personal pieces. One of the most impactful
is her text bracelet, which reads “Flink pike, kan du være selv?” This
phrase is an expression mainly dedicated to girls and women, about
how good they are, because you‘re supposed to be good all the time,
but it breaks the stereotype by asking the question, „Good girl, can
you be yourself?“ Because a real woman isn‘t always perfect.
Jotting down all the ideas that come to mind is another of her great
pieces of advice, since in her experience, the idea that you will
remember them later is unrealistic, and ultimately never happens.
You likely forget it.
And finally, rest. That part of the job that is often undervalued but
helps to change your perspective on things.
About the future
When we talk about the future, it‘s important to highlight the future
of craftsmanship, that labor that has been with us all our lives.
And Ruth believes in education as the main driver against a society
consumed by fast fashion and uncontrolled consumerism, a society
that wants everything easy and immediate. Education in the arts
and handmade things to raise awareness of the importance of the
creative process and the reasons for its costs: “It‘s an uphill battle
a lot of the time but it hopefully won‘t disappear because it is really
important”.
Nevertheless, regarding her nearest future, the artist has a clear
project to push forward towards:
„I have an exhibition I‘ve been brewing on for a couple of years. I‘m
hoping at some point that this will be the year. I want it to be a big
exhibition, a big massive room filled with that weird stuff, like the dolls
and the toys and dealing with fun and trauma and fun again.
It‘s jewelry, but also installation and also walking through this whole
thing.
So I have it in my head. I have it in my books. And hopefully at some
point I‘ll have it put together. I‘m sure.“
“I thought, maybe it would be just me who finds this fun, but it actually
resonated with a lot of people. So this is the piece that I sell the most of.
And it‘s fun because sometimes you make something and you think it‘s
just for you, and then suddenly it really resonates with people.”
Advice for future artists
Something she emphasizes is saving money. Ultimately, it‘s the most
important thing when starting a business and seeking stability.
However, the creative process is also important, and the artist
emphasizes the act of creating. Creating as much as possible, staying
active, even if it‘s just for a small impromptu drawing.
It is also very important to build a network of contacts. Even if it
is just to grab a coffee and chat, this aspect is crucial for feeling
supported, since, as the artist explains, “creative work can often be
quite isolating because you work on your own and you can get stuck in
your own head and end up doing nothing”.

KULTUR
«Byen vår fortjener vakre bygg»
Anja Nilsen
Skribent
flere stygge «infill»-prosjekter.
for over 100 år siden for eksempel bygninger i Murbyen og Posebyen.
kjemper for?
– AO kjemper for flere nye og vakre bygg. Kristiansand trenger
variasjon i nye bygg og fasader. Mange bygg fra de siste 50 årene,
oppleves hverken som vakre eller stedstilpasset. De spiller ikke på de
arkitektoniske grunnreglene.
arkitektur i Kristiansand – noe du mener fungerer?
– Fiskebygga!
bygd slik i dag.

Studentperspektivet
– Endringer tar tid i byggebransjen.
spesielt for deg?
Historisk finnes over 3000 stilarter.

tar for gitt.

Scary Tech:
TOPICAL
Deepfakes

Technology allows us to create almost anything we can imagine,
including things that have never actually happened. One of the
most striking examples of this is deepfakes, a form of artificial
intelligence that can manipulate and transform audio, images, or
video to make it appear as though someone said or did something
that they never did. While it began as a fascinating, curious
innovation, deepfakes have quickly become one of the most
controversial, divisive and potentially dangerous tools in the
media landscape today.
Deepfakes use machine learning algorithms, specifically called
“deep learning,” to analyse, observe and mimic human faces and
voices. By training on very large sets of real data, the AI learns
patterns in how people move and speak, allowing it to generate
fake yet realistic content. Early deepfakes were extremely easy to
spot, often featuring distorted faces, muddy sounds and awkward
movements. But today’s versions are much more convincing, so
much so that even experts in AI sometimes struggle to tell the
difference.
The technology does have creative uses. In the film industry, for
example, deepfakes are able to de-age actors
and bring historical figures back to
life for educational purposes. They
can also assist in accessibility,
allowing people who have
lost their voice to “speak”
again through AI-generated
models trained on their
old recordings. However,
the same technology
can easily be misused.
Deepfakes have been
linked to misinformation,
identity theft, and even
non-consensual explicit
content, raising serious
ethical, moral and legal
concerns.
Perhaps the greatest danger of deepfakes lies in their ability to
undermine trust. In a world already struggling with misinformation,
the idea that any video could be fake makes it harder for people to
believe what they see online. This so-called “liar’s dividend” means
that real evidence can be dismissed as fake, while fake evidence
can be passed off as real. This blurs the line between truth and
deception very well, unfortunately.
There are people who are trying to combat this problem. Researchers
are developing deepfake detection tools, and governments around
the world are exploring laws to regulate synthetic media. Tech
companies like Google and Meta have also pledged to watermark
or label AI-generated content. Still, as the technology evolves, so
too must our ability to think critically and verify what we consume.
Ultimately, deepfakes are a powerful
reminder that with great innovation
comes even greater responsibility. The
challenge for our generation is not just
to create new technologies, but rather
to ensure that truth survives in the
digital age.

Vår karakter møter oss ofte i spesielle situasjoner. I hvert fall situasjoner
Siden i
nødvendig for å kjenne handlingen. Der karakteren vår blir innblandet i en
langvarig og unødvendig krangel mellom to bekjente.
34
handling
første gangene noen måtte be dem om unnskyldning.
«tilgi» ordene. Det føltes ikke ærlig heller. To barn sammen i et rom
gjort noe galt, men alt vår karakter lærte var at i noen kontekster
blir man tvunget til å godta uærlige ord.
Nå begynner vår historie å ta form. Karakteren vår viser tegn til
eksistens.
Noe må endres for at noe skjer. Og vår karakter endrer seg sjeldent
selv.
I mange fortellinger, inkludert denne, oppnår karakteren vår
framgang gjennom motgang. Noen har for mye aggresjon, noe
som vår karakter må kommunisere med. Noen andre har for lite
kunnskap, noe som vår karakter må forklare for dem. Da vil både
vår karakter, oss og de to bekjente ha noe å kunne reflektere over.
