Silva Carvalho insistently claims that the event becomes a vehicle for the experience of experience. Writing does not so much present a world as present the sensation of sensation or the experience of experience. This shift substantially alters what we can say about affect (affects can be defined as states of the body experienced as inseparable from the presence of imaginary projecttion) in poetry. For where romantic and modernist poets still locate affect in the rendering of a scene, Silva Carvalho with his investigative poretical language projects affect as itself the most fundamental of phenomenological states. Indeed one cannot imitate or describe the affects basic to lyric as it has been perceived for a long time because the affects are inseparable from the qualities of the self-consciousness one brings to the events taking place within the writing. The reality Silva Carvalho composes is not in some world over against the author but in the author’s own articulate processes of sensation. That is why authors like him are always already audience. Writing becomes a constant working at the boundary between understanding and misunderstanding or between knowing and ignorance. Moreover because this process controls entire books in successive times and experiences, Silva Carvalho manages to capture the importance of repetion as a concrete index of those feelings which seem fundamental or unresolved or obsessive to him, and, we hope, to his readers as individuals and, most of all, human beings. -Marcia Newman
