As árvores e as aves da Quinta
É a diversidade de espécies vegetais presente
na Quinta de São Francisco que faz dela um
local de eleição para várias aves. A isto junta-se
a pequena dimensão da propriedade, que lhe
granjeia visitas das espécies que habitam nos
terrenos vizinhos.
Mesmo num espaço limitado, são fáceis de
identificar algumas preferências no território.
Se espécies mais urbanas como a andorinha
e o pardal são sobretudo observáveis perto do
núcleo de edifícios, junto à entrada, outras,
como o pica-pau malhado são difíceis de
encontrar: muito sensíveis à presença humana
preferem retirar-se para os limites da
propriedade, sobretudo em zonas nas quais
predomine o eucalipto.
Indiferentes à espécie de árvore que os acolhe,
rolas, pombos e estorninhos, escolhem
sobretudo exemplares de grande porte. Rapinas
e cucos — os últimos visitam a Quinta apenas
no Verão — escolhem as árvores com troncos
livres de ramagem, por serem os melhores
para pousar.
Outros animais, como a alvéola-cinzenta, são
observáveis ao longo de todo o curso de água.
E depois há o pisco-de-peito-ruivo ou o melro,
que surgem um pouco por todo o lado.
Na verdade, mesmo sem uma relação directa
entre uma árvore e uma determinada espécie de
ave, a variedade de aves presente na Quinta,
confirma que a diversidade de flora ali existente
é um dos aspectos que a torna única.
The trees and the birds in the Quinta
The reason why various bird species have chosen
Quinta de São Francisco as their home is because
of the diverse existing vegetation. Added to this is
the small size of the property, which attracts the
visits of species from the surrounding grounds.
Even if the area is limited, it is easy to identify
some territorial preferences. If more urban
species, like the swallow and the sparrow, can be
mainly seen closer to the group of buildings next
to the entrance, others like the greater spotted
woodpecker are difficult to find; very sensitive to
human presence, they would rather retreat to the
property’s boundaries, to areas where there are
more eucalyptus.
Indifferent to the species of hosting trees, doves,
pigeons and starlings normally choose large-
sized trees. As for the birds of prey and cuckoos,
the latter only visit the Quinta in the summer,
they choose branch-free tree trunks, as they
are the best on which to perch.
Other animals, like the grey wagtail, can be seen
along the extension of the water course. And then
there is the robin or the blackbird which can be
seen all over the property. In fact, even if there is
no direct relationship with a tree and a respective
bird species, the existing variety of birds confirms
that the flora diversity is one of the features that
make it unique.
