THE MAYOR 

O declínio do Verão e o regresso às aulas marcam, com 

a chegada do mês de Setembro, a entrada num novo 

ciclo de eventos e iniciativas de que importa salientar 

os mais relevantes. Assim, e na linha de dinamização 

cultural promovida pela Autarquia, começo por destacar 

o Encontro de Música Antiga que, sempre muito 

aguardado, vai já na sua XIII edição, decorrendo até 

Outubro. Entretanto, o Salir do Tempo, “Festival de Artes 

Medievais”, é iniciativa que, pelas suas características 

de originalidade e abordagem cultural de outro 

espaço e tempo, recomendo vivamente a todos os que 

quiserem visitar esta localidade nos dias 9, 10 e 11 de 

Setembro. 

As Jornadas Europeias do Património, com um vasto 

programa a decorrer na cidade de Loulé, de 23 a 25 de 

Setembro, são outra das realizações a destacar, bem 

como o Dia Mundial do Turismo, assinalado a 27 Setembro, 

e de primordial importância para o nosso Concelho. 

Em termos desportivos, refira-se a Taça do Mundo 

de Trampolins – “Loulé World Cup”, a decorrer… 

Espero sinceramente que estas sugestões representem, 

para todos em geral, excelentes oportunidades 

de lazer, entretenimento e valorização cultural.

MENSAGEM DO PRESIDENTE MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR 

The decline of summer and the start of the school year 

mark, with the arrival of September, the beginning of a 

new cycle of events and initiatives, among which I highlight 

the most relevant. Thus, in the line of the cultural activities 

promoted by the municipality, I begin by drawing 

attention to the always awaited Classical Music Meet, now 

in its 13th edition that will run until October. Meanwhile, 

the Salir do Tempo, ‘Medieval Arts Festival’ is another initiative 

that, owing to its original features and cultural approach 

to another space and time, I strongly recommend 

to all those who may wish to visit this village on the 9, 10 

and 11 September. 

The European Heritage Days, with an extensive program 

taking place in Loulé between the 23 and the 25 September, 

is also worth mentioning, as well as the World Tourism 

Day, celebrated on the 27 September and of overriding interest 

to our County. In the area of sports the World Springboard 

Cup that will take place ….. should also be stressed. 

I sincerely hope that these suggestions may represent, to 

everyone in general, excellent opportunities for leisure, 

entertainment and cultural development.

A presente exposição apresenta quase exclusivamente escultura 

adequando uma das linhas mais fortes da Colecção 

de Arte da Fundação EDP às características arquitectónicas 

do belíssimo local onde é apresentada. Ocupar um espaço, 

onde ecoa ainda o testemunho de um discurso religioso 

dos séc. XVI a XVIII com peças contemporâneas que nele 

se integram de forma tão intensa pode fazer-nos pensar 

mais em continuidades culturais e capacidade de diálogo 

de contrários do que em rupturas e impossibilidades.

This exhibition presents almost exclusively sculptures, adjusting 

one of the strongest lines of the EDP Foundation’s Art 

Collection to the architectonic features of the beautiful place 

where they are on display. Occupying a space where the testimony 

of a religious discourse from the 16th and 18th Century 

still echoes with contemporaneous items that have become 

part of it, so intensely, may make us think more about cultural 

continuity and of the opposites’ capacity for dialogue than of 

ruptures and impossibilities.

A Exposição “Overlappings” surgiu na sequência de um convite 

dirigido pelo RIBA –Royal Institute of British Architects. 

Trata-se de uma exposição de Arquitectura, representativa 

de uma leitura sobre a arquitectura portuguesa contemporânea. 

Participam os arquitectos Aires Mateus, Bak Gordon, 

Paulo David, João Favila, Inês Lobo, Ricardo Carvalho + Joana 

Vilhena. 

A exposição mostra o trabalho de um dos mais originais contextos 

arquitectónicos da Europa. Os projectos centram-se 

na investigação e demonstram afinidades conceptuais entre 

si. Estas revelam-se na relação entre arquitectura e território, 

tempo e materialidade, localidade e universalidade, 

permanência e significado cultural. 

Os projectos são mostrados em maquetas, desenhos, fotografias, 

vídeos e possuem largo espectro programático, de 

casas até escolas públicas, passando por hotéis e museus. 

A exposição tem uma apresentação do arquitecto britânico 

Jonathan Sergison.

EXHIBITION: OVERLAPPINGS. ALLGARVE 


Organization: Loulé Municipal Council 

The ‘Overlappings’ exhibition arose out of an invitation from 

the RIBA –Royal Institute of British Architects. It is an Architecture 

Exhibition that represents a reading of contemporaneous 

Portuguese architecture. The following architects participate 

in the exhibition Aires Mateus, Bak Gordon, Paulo David, João 

Favila, Inês Lobo, Ricardo Carvalho + Joana Vilhena. 

The exhibition shows the work of one of the most original architectonic 

contexts in Europe. The projects are focused on research 

and show their conceptual affinities, revealed in the 

relations between architecture and territory, time and materiality, 

locality and universality, permanency and cultural 

meaning. 

The projects comprise models, drawings, photographs and videos 

and cover a wide programmatic range, from dwellings to 

public schools, hotels and museums. The exhibition further 

features a presentation by the British architect Jonathan Sergison.

Nascido no Fundão em 1958, o contacto e vivências com 

a ruralidade envolvente viriam a marcar profundamente 

o seu trabalho e a sua linguagem pictórica. Nos anos 80, 

instala-se em Coimbra na oficina de Vasco Berardo, onde 

irá trabalhar entre 1981 e 1984 no desenho, na pintura e 

na cerâmica. É a partir de 1987 que começa a expor o seu 

trabalho, passou por inúmeras galerias, entre as quais, Altamira, 

Edicarte, Miron-Trema, Novo Século, entre outras. 

Com vários trabalhos publicados em livros e na impressa 

nacional, por exemplo no “Diário de Notícias”, João Vaz 

de Carvalho é também uma presença constante na Bienal 

Ilustração Portuguesa, sendo o vencedor do 1º prémio 

Ilustrare 2005. Para além destes, tem participado também 

em outras exposições de referência na área da ilustração, 

como por exemplo o Prémio Stuart de desenho de Impressa 

e o World Press Cartoon. 

Representar um corpo é isolar uma forma permanente que 

na realidade não existe, em que os ‘traços inalteráveis’ serão 

percepcionados num processo que tenta congelar o 

constante fluxo desse corpo, num estado de imutabilidade. 

Estes são os princípios que as obras de João Castro e Silva 

encerram na sua genialidade.

AND JOÃO CASTRO E SILVA 


Org.: Loulé Municipal Council 

Born in Fundão in 1958, the contact and experiences with the 

involving rural world would set deep marks in his work and in 

his pictorial language. In the 80’s he settled in Coimbra, in Vasco 

Berardo’s workshop, where he worked from 1981 to 1984 on 

drawings, paintings and ceramics. From 1987 onward he began 

showing his work, having passed through countless galleries, 

among which Altamira, Edicarte, Miron-Trema, Novo 

Século, and others. 

With various works published in books and in the national 

press, for instance in “Diário de Notícias”, João Vaz de Carvalho 

is also a constant presence in the Portuguese Illustration 

Biannial, having been awarded the First Prize of the Ilustrare 

2005. Besides these he has also participated in other reference 

shows in the area of illustration, such as the Stuart Press 

Drawing Prize and the World Press Cartoon. 

To represent a body is to isolate in a permanent way what in 

reality does not exist, in which ‘unalterable lines’ are perceived 

in a process that seeks to freeze the constant flux of that body, 

in a state of immutability. These are the principles that the genius 

works of João Castro e Silva enclose.

Mais uma vez este grupo reúne-se para com o seu talento, 

arte e sensibilidade expor a sua Forma de Ver. 

Para além da grande amizade que os une, cada um, com 

trabalhos diferentes, possuem algo muito importante em 

comum: a forma “ idêntica “ de sentir, de ver tudo aquilo 

que transmitem de uma forma espontânea. 

Todos eles têm uma maneira própria de ver as formas, pois 

não se limitam a olhar! Eles sentem o que vêem...dai Formas 

de Ver! 

Com as suas mãos transformam o que observam de uma 

forma tão pessoal, que, inconscientemente, despertam a 

todos quantos visitam esta exposição o gosto, a sensibilidade 

para deixar de olhar e passar também a sentir e a ganhar 

novas Formas de Ver.

Once again, this group gets together to, with their talent, art 

and sensitivity, show their Ways of Seeing. 

In addition to the great friendship that unites them, they all, 

through different works, have something very important in 

common: The ‘identical’ way of feeling, of seeing all that which 

they convey with spontaneity. 

They each have their own way of perceiving shapes, as they do 

not just look! They feel what they see...hence Ways of Seeing! 

With their hands they transform what they see in such a personal 

way that, unconsciously, they arise in all those who visit 

this exhibition the taste and the sensitivity to not look but also 

to feel and acquire new Ways of Seeing.

Apresentação do livro “uma nova 

oportunidade”

Uma nova oportunidade é baseado 

num episódio real ocorrido em Abril de 

1987, na EN125, no Algarve. 

José Alfredo Teixeira Leiria nasceu em 

Agosto de 1957, na freguesia de Estoi, 

concelho de Faro. Profissionalmente 

ligado às telecomunicações, nunca 

deixou de desenvolver actividades de 

âmbito cultural. Desde meados da década 

de 70 tem estado ligado a vários 

grupos de teatro amador como encenador. 

Tem participado na edição e 

redacção de jornais, propriedade de associações 

desportivas e culturais. 

Em 1999, concluiu a Licenciatura em 

História, na Universidade Aberta e, em 

Abril de 2004, completou o Mestrado 

em Estudos Portugueses Interdisciplinares, 

com a dissertação intitulada: No 

vértice comunicativo da modernidade 

com a Notícia do Brasil de Gabriel Soares 

de Sousa (1540-1590).

opportunity’

A new opportunity is based on a real 

situation that took place in April 1987,

on the EN125 trunk road, in Algarve. 

José Alfredo Teixeira Leiria was born in 

Augusto 1957, in Estoi commune, Faro 

county. Professionally linked to telecommunications, 

he has always been 

engaged in cultural activities. Since the 

mid 70’s he has been acting as director 

for several amateur theatre groups. He 

has participated in editing and writing 

newspapers owned by sports and cultural 

associations. 

In 1999, he concluded his Degree in 

History, in the Universidade Aberta and 

in April 2004 concluded a Master’s in

Setembro, a Biblioteca acolhe a apresentação 

do livro A substância do tempo 

de Isabel Pereira Rosa. 

O livro A substância do tempo de Isabel 

Pereira Rosa aborda o tema do voluntariado, 

porque segundo a autora, 

desde que conhece o significado da palavra, 

tem «uma profunda admiração 

por todos os voluntários, pessoas que 

abdicam do seu tempo, do seu conforto, 

para ir ajudar outras que precisam 

muito». O livro constitui, desta forma, 

«uma homenagem a todos os que dão 

o seu melhor em prol dos mais desfavorecidos.» 

“A substância do tempo” toma por referência 

o Ano Europeu do Voluntariado 

(2011) e sucede ao auto-biográfico 

“Memórias de uma professora”, editado 

em 2009, também pela Chiado Editora.

The book A substância do tempo by Isabel 

Pereira Rosa addresses the theme of 

volunteering because, according to the 

author, since she learned the meaning 

of the word that she has a profound admiration 

for all volunteers, people who 

give up their time and their comfort to 

help other people who need it’. Thus the 

book is a “homage to all those who give 

their best in favour of the more underprivileged”. 

‘A substância do tempo’ takes as reference 

the European Year of Volunteering 

(2011) and follows the auto-biography 

‘Memórias de uma professora’(Memories 

of a teacher), published in 2009, also by

Em 1684 as Freiras Franciscanas de Nossa 

Senhora da Conceição foram alojadas 

numa casa junto da Igreja de Nossa 

Senhora dos Pobres. Por volta de 1693 

ocupavam já um conjunto de casas anexas 

à Igreja do Espírito Santo, obtendo 

reconhecimento Papal em 1711. Nos 

finais do século XVIII conseguiram realizar 

melhoramentos no edifício, construindo-se 

então o claustro. Depois da 

extinção das ordens religiosas instalaram-se 

no antigo convento diversas 

repartições públicas. Em 2010 a remodelação 

da rede de esgotos que atravessa 

o claustro pôs a descoberto uma 

série de vestígios das anteriores ocupações 

do sítio. Destacam-se os enterramentos 

de duas freiras, cujos resultados 

do estudo da antropologia biológica serão 

apresentados na Conferência.

they already occupied a group of buildings

nition in 1711. At the end of the 18th 

Century they managed to carry out improvements 

on the building at which 

time the cloister was built. After the religious 

orders were extinguished, several 

public services were set up in the 

former convent. In 2010 the remodelling 

of the sewerage that crosses the 

cloister exposed a number of evidences 

of earlier occupation of the place. 

Among these the burial of two nuns 

stand out; the results of the biological 

anthropology study will be presented 

at the Conference.

Mobilehome - III Curso Experimental de Arte Contemporânea

Mobilehome é um projecto de escola nómada, experimental e 

independente de formação avançada no campo da arte contemporânea, 

criado em 2009, com o objectivo de oferecer aos artistas 

fixados no Algarve uma plataforma de trabalho e discussão 

sintonizada com as temáticas estruturantes do pensamento artístico 

contemporâneo. Os tutores convidados, portugueses ou 

estrangeiros, artistas, curadores e professores, mantêm uma 

actividade de relevo no panorama artístico internacional e 

aportam uma experiência e um conhecimento específicos que 

permitem oferecer e desenvolver modelos de pensamento que 

em muito contribuem para o desenvolvimento do percurso profissional 

dos participantes no curso. 

A terceira edição do curso, realizada em Agosto próximo, será dedicada 

à prática e reflexão da fotografia enquanto meio de construção 

do entorno e terá como tutor principal Joachim Brohm, 

fotógrafo e professor da reputada escola de Leipzig, que coordenará 

um grupo de trabalho cujo modus operandi incidirá numa 

exploração documental crítica do variado e rico território do 

concelho de Loulé, com o propósito de estabelecer a curto prazo 

um projecto dedicado à importante tarefa de um registo visual 

abrangente, crítico e auto-reflexivo da paisagem algarvia, 

património identitário de valor individual e social inestimável.

Mobilehome - 3rd Experimental Course in Contemporaneous Art 

Venue: Cinema and Theatre 

Mobilehome is an experimental and independent nomading 

school project of advanced training in contemporaneous art created 

in 2009 with the aim of offering artists living in Algarve a 

working platform and an in tune discussion with the structuring 

themes of contemporaneous artistic thought. The invited tutors, 

Portuguese and foreign, artists, curators and teachers, maintain 

an important activity in the international artistic landscape and 

bring with them an experience and specific knowledge that will 

allow to offer and develop models of thought that may contribute 

significantly to the advancement of the participants professional 

career. 

The third edition of the course will take place next August and 

will be dedicated to photography practice and reflection as a 

means of building the surrounding, which main tutor will be 

Joachim Brohm, photographer and teacher from the renown 

Leipzig school, who will coordinate a work group, which modus 

operandi will focus on the documentary critical exploration 

of the varied and rich territory of the Loulé county, with the aim 

of establishing, on the short term, a project dedicated to the important 

task of carrying out a broad critical and self-reflective 

visual registry of Algarve’s landscape, which will be an identitary 

heritage of priceless individual and social value.

Em Setembro, de 5 a 16, o departamento de fotografia do Ar.Co 

- Centro de Artes e Comunicação Visual, deslocará de Lisboa para 

Loulé alguns dos seus principais professores, no campo da teoria, 

da técnica e da prática fotográfica, para orientar dois workshops, 

um de introdução à fotografia e outro avançado. 

O convite que a Câmara Municipal de Loulé fez àquela que é a escola 

de fotografia mais prestigiada do país inscreve-se na aposta 

feita pela autarquia na qualificação da formação técnica e artística, 

tendo como principal objectivo proporcionar uma formação 

de qualidade numa área central do mundo contemporâneo como 

é a fotografia, cujo leque de possibilidades e saídas profissionais 

é muito variado e abrangente. 

Obedecendo a uma filosofia que privilegia uma vertente aplicada 

e autoral, os cursos que serão disponibilizados à comunidade 

cobrem algumas das valências centrais da fotografia. Dirigem- 

-se, por um lado, a especialistas e profissionais desta área, propondo 

um aprofundamento da experiência que adquiriram no 

seu percurso, bem como a uma franja da população ainda não 

ou recentemente iniciada à fotografia e que pretende familiarizar-se 

ou melhor conhecer as possibilidades desta disciplina.

In September, from the 5 to the 16, Ar.Co – Centro de Artes e 

Comunicação Visual’s department of photography will send 

some of their main teachers in the field of photography theory, 

techniques and practice, to Loulé to guide two workshops, 

an introduction to photography course and an advanced 

course. 

The invitation made by the City Council of Loulé to this school 

that is the most prestigious in the country, is part of the municipality’s 

commitment to the qualification of technical and 

artistic training, which main objective is to provide quality 

training in a central area of the contemporary world, as it is the 

case with photography, which offers a varied and comprehensive 

range of possibilities and vocational opportunities. 

Complying with a philosophy that privileges an applied and 

authorial aspect, the courses made available to the community 

will cover some of the core valences in photography. On the 

one hand they are directed at specialist and professionals from 

this field, proposing a deepening of the experience they have 

gathered in the course of their activity, as well as at a group of 

the population that has not yet started or has recently started 

in photography and who wish to get familiar or get to know 

better the possibilities this discipline has to offer.

De 1 a 3 de Setembro, a Associação Portuguesa de Didgeridoo 

volta a organizar o Festival de Didgeridoo - FATT 2011. 

Este evento será a 9ª edição e mantêm o Didgeridoo como 

cerne deste evento, assim como as culturas do mundo, 

principalmente a cultura Yolŋu – Aborígene Australiana. 

Será novamente na Aldeia do Ameixial, concelho de Loulé. 

A edição anterior foi considerada um dos melhores eventos 

de Didgeridoo da Europa, os objectivos foram superados e 

as criticas do público foram óptimas. 

A abertura do festival decorrerá a 1 de Setembro à noite 

com performances de fogo de Mark Juggler (Crowlin Circus) 

e jam sessions. As principais actuações serão no dia 

2 e 3. Além dos concertos o evento é repleto de master- 

-class, workshops e outras actividades para todo o público, 

dinamizadas por excelentes professores e monitores, para 

quem deseja aprofundar conhecimentos em diversas áreas. 

No recinto do festival terá artesanato local e internacional, 

destacando a venda de vários instrumentos. Com o objectivo 

de continuar a oferecer a melhor qualidade aos nossos 

visitantes, o recinto do evento foi melhorado e o parque de 

campismo terá mais condições para oferecer.

FATT 2011 DIDGERIDOO FESTIVAL

Between the 1 and the 3 September, the Portuguese Didgeridoo 

Association will organize the FATT 2011 Didgeridoo Festival. This 

event will be the 9th edition and it maintains the Didgeridoo as 

the core of the event, together with the cultures of the world, 

mainly the Australian Aborigenous Culture - Yolŋu. 

The festival will be held again in the village of Ameixial, in Loulé 

County. 

The preceding edition was considered one of the best Didgeridoo 

events ever to be held in Europe, the aims were overcome 

and the public’s criticism was very positive. 

The festival will open on the evening of the 1 September with a 

fire show by Mark Juggler (Crowlin Circus) and jam sessions. The 

main performances will be given on the 2 and 3. In addition to 

the concerts, the event will be packed with master-class, workshops 

and other activities for all audiences, developed by excellent 

teachers and trainers, for anyone who may want to expand 

their knowledge in various areas. 

In the festival enclosure there will be both local and international 

handicraft, with emphasis to the sale of various instruments. 

With the aim of continuing to offer our visitors the best 

quality, the event enclosure has been improved and the camping 

site will also be offering better conditions.

O Salir do Tempo continua a sua viagem no espaço e no 

tempo, embora este ano a vila de Salir receba uma “roupagem” 

nova, onde a história e a música se cruzam nos habituais 

ambientes medievais, o equilíbrio dos factos e das 

ideias mantêm-se. Transformado num festival de artes, 

cuja reconquista nos transporta aos séculos mais importantes 

da nossa história, o Salir do Tempo marca um período 

em que as leis da Cristandade, os valentes cavaleiros, 

a música medieval, os monges copistas e os alquimistas 

se misturavam em vários mundos dispares aqui recriados 

neste cenário rural. 

A actuação de vários grupos musicais de onde se destacam: 

os Trovas D’ Amigo, especializado no repertório medieval 

galaico-português, Sharq Wa Garb interpretando 

música medieval árabe e o Cuarteto Aquitânia exibindo 

sons medievais judaico-sefarditas, são exemplos de qualidade 

garantida. 

Contando com dezenas de artesãos da região, mas também 

vindos de outras partes do país e mesmo internacionais, 

o mercado divide-se em duas grandes zonas: 

artesanato muçulmano e artesanato de base local. 

A gastronomia diversificada e a exposição de animais também 

não vão faltar.

Salir do Tempo continues its travel through space and time, 

although this year the small town of Salir will present a new 

‘Look’, in which history and music intersect in the usual medieval 

environment, maintaining the balance between facts 

and ideas. Transformed into an arts festival, which reconquest 

takes us back to the most important centuries in our history, 

Salir do Tempo marks a period in which the laws of Cristianity, 

intrepid knights, medieval music, copyist monks and the 

alchemists came together in dissimilar worlds, here recreated 

in this rural scenario. 

Various musical groups will be performing, among which the 

following stand out: Trovas D’ Amigo, specialized in a medieval 

Galician-Portuguese repertoire, Sharq Wa Garb, playing 

Arab medieval music, and the Cuarteto Aquitânia playing medieval 

Sephardic-Jewish sounds, all of which are examples of 

guaranteed quality. 

Many artisans from the region and from other parts of the 

country and even from abroad are expected at this fair that 

will be divided into two major areas: Muslim handicraft and 

local handicraft. 

Varied gastronomy and an animal show will also not be lacking.

Municipal de Loulé a 6ª Edição da Competição Internacional 

de Trampolins LOULÉ CUP. Competição organizada pela 

Associação de Pais e Amigos da Ginástica de Loulé (APAGL), 

com o apoio da Câmara Municipal de Loulé e da Federação de 

Ginástica de Portugal. 

A 6ª Edição da Loulé Cup contará com a presença de cerca de 

500 ginastas de 50 delegações, representando 11 países, Reino 

Unido, Espanha, Irlanda, Bélgica, França, Suécia, Brasil, Canadá, 

EUA, Qatar e Portugal. 

Prova acreditada pela Federação Internacional de Ginástica, a 

Loulé Cup já é uma das principais provas de trampolins que se 

realizam em todo o mundo. Mais uma vez, teremos em Loulé 

alguns dos melhores ginastas do mundo de trampolins, que se 

preparam para o próximo campeonato do mundo a realizar no

6TH EDITION OF THE LOULÉ CUP 2011

On the next 16 and 17 September, the 6th edition of the International 

Springboard Competition LOULÉ CUP will take place in 

the Municipal Pavilion of Loulé. The competition has been organized 

by the Loulé Parents and Gymnastics Friends Association 

(APAGL) with the support of the City Council of Loulé and 

the Portuguese Gymnastics Federation. 

About 500 athletes from 50 delegations and representing 11 

countries, United Kingdom, Spain, Ireland, Belgium, France, 

Sweden, Brazil, Canada, USA, Qatar and Portugal, will be participating 

in the 6th Edition of the Loulé Cup. 

The Loulé Cup, accredited by the International Gymnastics 

Federation, is already one of the main springboard contests in 

the world. Once again, some of the world’s best springboard 

gymnasts will gather in Loulé, preparing for the next world 

championship which will take place in November next, in Birmingham, 

UK.

FREIXO VERDE (BENAFIM) 

Aldeia dispersa e cada vez mais despovoada, Freixo Verde 

na freguesia de Benafim é hoje um exemplo claro e inequívoco 

da desertificação do interior do País. 

Alice Guerreiro da Silva, de 74 anos, nascida e criada nesta 

povoação, conta-nos que haviam quase uma centena 

de pessoas a viver naquela aldeia e que agora esse número 

está reduzido a apenas duas dezenas. Alice fala-nos da 

diversidade e quantidade de produtos que se cultivavam 

ali desde: o trigo, cevada, aveia, feijão, tomate e batatas, 

tudo era riqueza naquela zona. Vivendo das reformas, os 

poucos habitantes do Freixo Verde já quase não semeiam 

e os que o fazem, é apenas para consumo próprio. 

Repleto de figueiras, alfarrobeiras e oliveiras, este vale 

liga duas freguesias do concelho de Loulé, Benafim e 

Alte, onde as assimetrias se dividem e se projectam no 

tempo. 

SÍTIOS E TRADIÇÕES PLACES AND TRADITIONS 

Freixo Verde is a disperse and increasingly depopulated village 

in Benafim commune, today a clear and unequivocal example 

of the desertification of the countryside. 

Alice Guerreiro da Silva, 74 years old, born and raised in this 

village, tells us that there were almost one hundred people living 

there, a figure that has now been reduced to mere twenty. 

Alice tells us about the diversity and amount of products that 

used to be cultivated locally, viz.: wheat, barley, oat, beans, tomato 

and potatoes, everything was quite plentiful in that area. 

Living on their pensions, the few inhabitants of Freixo Verde 

hardly grow anything anymore and what they do grow is for 

their own consumption. 

Full of fig, carob and olive trees, this valley connects two communes 

in Loulé County, Benafim and Alte, where the asymmetries 

are divided and projected in time. 


OS PRESIDENTES DO MUNICÍPIO MAYORS OF LOULÉ 

Natural de Gavião, onde nasceu em 16/11/1907, Aires de 

Lemos Tavares fixou residência em Loulé, exercendo durante 

anos as funções de médico veterinário. 

Para além disso, assumiu elevadas funções políticas, tendo 

sido durante alguns anos Presidente da Câmara Municipal 

de Loulé. 

Iniciou as suas funções como Presidente a 11 de Fevereiro 

de 1946 e a última sessão a que presidiu data de 5 de 

Setembro de 1951. Foram implementadas medidas importantes 

como a construção de raiz de várias escolas no concelho, 

o abastecimento de água a Querença e Quarteira, 

a electrificação de várias freguesias, a reparação de caminhos, 

poços e fontes, a pavimentação de estradas, a criação 

de uma nova Feira, designada Feira Franca, a concessão de 

um plano de urbanização de Loulé, a construção de bairros 

de casas para pobres, a criação de uma escola comercial e 

industrial, a arborização da Avenida general Carmona (actual 

25 de Abril), a mudança de nome de várias ruas da vila 

e a fixação de feiras e mercados de todo o concelho de 

Loulé, entre outras. Foi também durante este período que 

o Concelho ficou delimitado em relação ao Concelho de Almodôvar 

pelo Instituto Geográfico e Cadastral, e que se 

deu a elevação do Concelho à “Primeira Ordem”. 

Vítima de uma trombose, faleceu no Hospital de Faro no 

dia 18/9/1976, com 68 anos, estando sepultado no cemitério 

de Loulé, num jazigo, com a mulher D. Marília do Resgate 

Faísca Tavares.

MAYORS OF LOULÉ 

AIRES DE LEMOS TAVARES 

Born in Gavião in 16/11/1907, Aires de Lemos Tavares settled 

in Loulé where he worked as a veterinary for a number 

of years. 

He further assumed important political duties, having held the 

office as mayor of Loulé for some years. 

He took office as Mayor on the 11 February 1946 and the last 

session he presided over was on the 5 September 1951. During 

his mandate important measures were implemented in 

the county, such as the construction of several schools , water 

supply to Querença and Quarteira, electrification of several 

communes, roads, wells and fountains were repaired, roads 

were paved and a new fair-ground called Feira Franca was created, 

a Town Planning Scheme for Loulé was granted, social 

housing districts were built, a commerce and industry school 

was created and trees were planted along the General Carmona 

Ave. (currently 25 de Abril Ave.), several town streets were 

renamed and a Fairs and Markets calendar was established for 

the whole County among other things. It was also during this 

period that the boundaries of the county up to the county of 

Almodôvar were redefined by the Geographic and Cadastral 

Institute and that the rank of the County was elevated to that 

of ‘First Order’. 

After suffering a thrombosis, he died in Faro hospital on 

18/9/1976, at the age of 68 and is buried in the Loulé cemetery, 

next to his wife Marília do Resgate Faísca Tavares.

RUA ANTÓNIA PROVISÓRIO (BENAFIM) 

ANTÓNIA PROVISÓRIO ST. (BENAFIM) 

Antónia do Carmo Provisório da Silva Campos, benfeitora do 

concelho de Loulé, em particular da freguesia de Benafim, 

tem nome de rua nesta localidade e também numa zona de 

lazer e de convívio denominada de “Pátio da Dona Antónia”, 

inspirada na arquitectura tradicional algarvia. 

Nasceu a 25 de Fevereiro de 1907, na freguesia de Alvor, e 

faleceu a 31 de Maio de 2006, na freguesia de Benafim, com 

99 anos de idade. 

Dirigiu a Quinta do Freixo e dedicou parte da sua vida a criar

vias de esperança para as populações locais. 

Ajudou pessoas sem meios de subsistência, protegeu crianças 

abandonadas, promoveu o desenvolvimento de Alte e 

Benafim, criou a Urbanização do Bairro Novo, ofereceu terrenos 

para a criação de espaços colectivos, tais como o Cemitério, 

o Sport Club de Benafim, o Campo de Futebol, ajudou 

as Igrejas de Alte e Benafim, preocupando-se também com 

a expansão urbana da sede do Concelho, cedendo na década 

de 40 terrenos da Quinta do Pombal à Câmara Municipal 

de Loulé, onde hoje estão instalados o Monumento ao Engº 

Duarte Pacheco, a Casa da Primeira Infância, as Piscinas Municipais 

e outras infra-estruturas de interesse público. 

Foi uma pessoa dedicada à sua terra e sempre à disposição 

da população. Em 2007 foi agraciada pelo Município de Loulé 

com a Medalha Municipal de Mérito. 

TOPONÍMIA TOPONYMY 

Antónia do Carmo Provisório da Silva Campos, benefactor of the 

county of Loulé, in particular the Benafim commune, has a street 

named after her in this village and also a leisure and recreation 

area called ‘Dona Antónia’s Patio’, inspired in the traditional architecture 

from Algarve. 

Born on 25 February 1907, in Alvor commune, she died on 31 

May 2006, in Benafim commune at the age of 99. 

She was the Manager of Quinta do Freixo and devoted part of her 

life to advancing the rural interior, valuing the land and giving 

hope to the local population. 

She helped people who lacked the opportunity to earn a living, 

protected abandoned children, furthered the development of 

Alte and Benafim, created the Bairro Novo Urban Development, 

donated land to the creation of public spaces, such as the Cemetery, 

the Benafim Sports Club, the o Football Field, helped the 

churches in Alte and Benafim and showed concern regarding the 

urban expansion of the municipality capital; in the 40’s she ceded 

the land of the Quinta do Pombal to the Municipality of Loulé, 

where, today, the Monument to Engineer Duarte Pacheco, the 

Casa da Primeira Infância (early childhood institution), the Municipal 

Swimming Pools and other infrastructures of public interest 

exist. 

She was highly devoted to her county and always available to 

the population. In 2007 she was granted the Municipality of 

Loulé’s Medal of Merit.

Ameixial, igreja paroquial de Santo António 

Da escola portuguesa de meados do século XVIII, apresentamos 

como peça de arte sacra para o mês de Setembro a 

imagem de São Miguel em madeira policromada, pertencente 

à igreja de Santo António (Ameixial) e que se encontra 

preservada. 

O arcanjo São Miguel, amado e venerado pelo povo de 

Deus é invocado como guarda e protector da Igreja. É um 

dos três anjos mencionados por nome na Bíblia, juntamente 

com Rafael no livro de Tobias e Gabriel no livro de Daniel 

e no Evangelho de São Lucas. O profeta Daniel chama-lhe 

“Príncipe dos Anjos”. A Igreja invoca-o como advogado de 

defesa na vida e na hora da morte. O povo reza muitas orações 

a S. Miguel pedindo a sua protecção, sobretudo contra 

as ciladas do demónio e os espíritos maléficos. 

É comemorado pela Igreja Católica sob o nome de São Miguel 

Arcanjo em 29 de Setembro.

Ameixial, Santo António parish church 

In September we present a sacred art item from the Portuguese 

School, mid 18th Century, the image of São Miguel on 

polychrome wood, belonging to the Santo António church 

(Ameixial) and which remains well preserved. 

The archangel St. Miguel, loved and venerated by God’s people 

is invoked as the guardian and protector of the Church. He 

is one of the three angels mentioned by name in the Bible, together 

with Rafael in the book of Tobias and with Gabriel in the 

book of Daniel and in the Gospel of Luke. The propheth Daniel 

calls him ‘the Prince of Angels’. The Church invokes him as advocate 

in life and at the time of death. The people pray a lot to 

St. Miguel asking for his protection, in particular against evil 

spirits and the traps set by the devil . 

He is celebrated by the Catholic Church under the name St. Michael 

the Archangel on the 29 September. 


GASTRONOMIA GASTRONOMY 

A Agenda Municipal de Loulé apresenta uma selecção de 

receitas de gastronomia regional variada subtraída do livro 

“Gastronomia no concelho de Loulé”. 

COZINHA DE BATATAS 

Ingredientes 

½ Kgs de Batatas; 1 dl de Azeite ou 2 colheres de sopa de banha 

de porco; 8 fatias de pão; 2 tomates maduros; 1 Cebola 

pequena; 4 Dentes de alho; 1 Colher de chá de calda de pimento; 

Água q.b. Salsa q.b. Sal q.b 

Preparação 

Arranjam-se os tomates sem peles e grainhas. Numa panela 

coloca-se o azeite, a cebola, os alhos cortados, a salsa, a 

calda de pimento e os tomates cortados e deixa-se refogar 

até a cebola ficar molinha. Depois do refogado terminado 

acrescenta-se cerca de 1 litro de água, o sal e as batatas 

cortadas às rodelas. Deixam-se cozer as batatas e depois 

colocam-se as fatias de pão no fundo de uma travessa e 

despeja-se o molho e o restante cozinhado por cima destas, 

deixando-se repousar um pouco para amolecer o pão 

e está pronto a ser servido.

POTATO STEW 

The Loulé Municipal Agenda presents a selection of recipes 

from our varied regional gastronomy, extracted from the book 

“Gastronomy of Loulé County”. 

POTATO STEW 

Ingredients 

½ kg potatoes; 1 dl olive oil or 2 tablespoons of lard; 8 slices 

of bread; 2 ripe tomatoes; 1 small onion; 4 cloves of garlic; 

1 teaspoon calda de pimento (hot pepper sauce); water, parsley 

and salt to taste 

Preparation 

Peel and seed the tomatoes. Pour the olive oil into a cooker, 

add the onion, chopped cloves, parsley, the pepper sauce and 

the sliced tomatoes and let it cook until the onion is soft. Add 

1 litre of water, salt and the sliced potatoes. Let the potatoes 

cook, place the slices of bread on a platter and pour the sauce 

and the stew over the bread, letting it rest a while until the 

bread is soft and the dish is ready to be served.
