Primeiro PlanoFoi numa Luanda do tempo da guerra queDaniela Ribeiro passou a sua infância e formouo seu carácter. Aos vinte, já em Portugal,estudou e atribuíram-lhe um número decontribuinte. Viajou pela Europa, aculturouse,mas não se rendeu. Apaixonou-se peloUniverso e pela Ciência, e hoje é capaz derecriar planetas quase reais e humanizar asmáquinas. Em apenas dez anos tornou-se umaartista reconhecida internacionalmente. Deregresso a Angola, o maior desafio é explicara estrutura oral da cultura africana, o quepretende descobrir com a implementação de umLaboratório da Arte Africana.It was in a Luanda during civil war thatDaniela Ribeiro spent her childhood andshaped her character. Primeiro PlanoÁfrica Today: Comecemos pelo início de tudo: de queforma a arte entrou na sua vida?Daniela Ribeiro: Já era muito criativa em miúda, mastinha poucas ferramentas para criar, não me eram dadoslápis de cor, nem aulas de pintura. Usava materiais encontradosna rua para as minhas primeiras composições. Maistarde, aos 30 anos, após um longo caminho percorrido,descobri que criar me era natural e me fazia feliz. Foi entãoque me dediquei a tempo inteiro à criação de obras de arte.Quando estou a criar, os meus sentidos activam-se a 100por cento. Às vezes, não como e não durmo. A criatividadeé isto: uma ferramenta do cérebro como amemória ou a fé.A arte é a sua primeira e grandepaixão, mas licenciou-se em RelaçõesInternacionais (1998). Deque maneira se deu esta volta?Frustrada sem conseguir uma explicaçãorazoável para os conceitos abstractosda matemática moderna, fuipara Relações Internacionais até porquetinha um pai que era um homemde estado e cresci com uma grandeconsciência política. Precisava entendero fenómeno da guerra. Este curso deu--me uma grande cultura geral, estruturouo meu pensamento político. A passagem pelaPresidência da República portuguesa, pela Presidênciado Conselho da União Europeia em 2000 e conhecerlíderes europeus, permitiu-me compreender a importânciade criar uma esfera de influência útil a qualquer profissão.Decidi abandonar esta carreira e, entretanto, dá-se o 11de Setembro. How did this turn ofevents happened?I was frustrated, without getting a reasonableexplanation for the abstractconcepts of modern mathematics,I went to International Relations,mostly because my father was astatesman and I grew up with agreat political awareness. I neededto understand the phenomenon ofwar. This course gave me a great generalculture and structured my politicalthinking. Passing through the Presidencyof the Portuguese Republic and the Presidencyof the Council of the European Union in 2000, meetingEuropean leaders, enabled me to understand the importanceof creating a sphere of influence, useful to anyprofession. I decided to abandon this career and then 9/11happens. With my political analysis, I foresaw a great tragedy:the Third World War! O meucurso não me dava muitas opções e foiaí que me virei para o meu dom inatoe que começou a tomar forma: as artesplásticas.O seu primeiro fascínio foi o Universo.Como passou a interessar--se pela ciência e tecnologia?Ao ver o filme “Os 15 anos do TelescópioHubble”, consegui entender a noçãode infinito e o fenómeno da expansãodo Universo. Entretanto, descobrios materiais de síntese, as resinas epóxicas…fiquei colada à tela quando vium artista em Basileia, Suíça, a trabalharaquele material. Investiguei, compreio produto e fiquei deslumbrada.Como não sou uma artista abstracta,apaixonei-me pelo Universo e quis recriá-lo.A fase seguinte foi a tecnologia,porque virei o telescópio Hubble paraa Terra e deparei-me com os nossosnovos superpoderes: a tecnologia! Foiassim que decidi desmontar telemóveis,um a um, e isso colocou-me numestado criativo brutal. Deito fora a capaporque é feita para um cérebro básicoe inócuo, mas os interiores, as placasmãe fascinaram-me. Tinha ali, diantede mim, uma representação materialda inteligência. Até me pareciam cidadesvistas do espaço, com parques deestacionamento e árvores. Fiquei a sonharcom aquilo. Estabeleci uma relaçãoemocional. Quase que acredito queas máquinas são seres vivos porquesão interpretações e prolongamentosdas capacidades humanas.Foi um caminho persistente…Foi difícil, mas melhorou quando arranjeiuma curadora que me proporcionouum ateliê à minha dimensão:“Toma Daniela”, disse ela. “Este espaçoé para te tornares numa grandeartista”. O ateliê tinha três mil metrosquadrados e 15 de pé direito com luznatural! Foi assim que a minha mentese soltou e dei azo à minha imaginação,em conjunto com outros artistasque fui convidando. Criei, assim, oARTinPark, uma associação de artistasque já produziu nomes fortes nasartes. Desde peseI was forced to rethink my existenceand the meaning of life. My degree didnot give me many options and it waswhen I turned into my inborn gift andit began to take shape: the fine arts.Your first fascination was the Universe.How did you become interestedin science and technology?When I saw the movie “The 15 yearsof the Hubble Space Telescope”, I gotto understand the concept of infinityand the phenomenon of the Universeexpansion. Meanwhile, I foundthe synthesis materials, the epoxy resins...I was glued to the screen whenI saw an artist in Basel, Switzerland,working that material. I investigated,bought the product and I was dazzled.As I am not an abstract artist, I fell inlove with the Universe and wanted torecreate it. Technology was the nextphase because I turned the Hubble Telescopeto Telescope to Earth and I came across with ournew superpowers: the technology! It was so that I decidedto disassemble mobile phones, one by one, and it put mein a brutal creative state. I toss away the case because it ismade for a basic and innocuous brain, but the interiors,the motherboards, fascinated me. There it was, before me,a material representation of intelligence. It almost seemedcities seen from space, with car parks and trees. I was dreamingabout that. I established an emotional relationship.
