Expolux, o principal evento brasileiro do setor.
A breath of fresh air on the Brazilian arts scene. Two important new spaces
devoted to the plastic arts have recently been opened: the Iberê Camargo Museum in
Porto Alegre (RS) and a new pavilion at the Inhotim Centre of Contemporary Art in Minas
Gerais, about both of which we are publishing articles in this edition of L+D.
As we are aware, in lighting projects for museums and art galleries, the great challenge
is in reconciling the two main demands that present themselves in such environments:
good viewing conditions together with the conservation of the works. And it is this delicate
balance that we witness in both new projects, each with its own approach.
The relationship (and interaction) of daylight with artificial light is also prominent in the Kansas
City Ballroom project, duly recognised as a double prize-winner at the last IALD awards.
This edition also brings together the principal new products and trends presented at the 5th
edition of Light+Building, the world’s most important trade fair in the lighting field, as well as
Expolux, the main Brazilian event in this sector.
DAN FLAVIN:
CONSTRUCTED LIGHT
for the Arts, em St. Louis, Missouri (EUA), o foco é a relação do
afirma a curadora convidada Tiffany Bell.
No entanto, o
Coloured fluorescent tubes are the raw materials for the sculptural installations
of North American artist Dan Flavin, recognised as one of the founders
of minimalist art. In the exhibition Dan Flavin: Constructed Light, on show
until 4th October at the Pulizer Foundation for the Arts, in St. Louis, Missouri
(USA), the focus is the relationship of Flavin’s art with the essentially
linear architecture of the Pulitzer building, designed by Tadao Ando.
“One of the major innovations of Dan Flavin’s art was the way in which
he integrated his materials with architecture and the surrounding space of a
room. With fluorescent lights strategically placed, he was able to transform
the viewer’s perception of any given room and provide a new, dynamic
experience of that space,” states the invited curator Tiffany Bell.
The shifts in natural light during the course of the day modify the
perception of the works, and this is a feature seized on by the artist. In
view of this, the Pulitzer building will remain open from 6 pm to 9 pm
on the first Thursday of every month, so that visitors are able to view the
installations at dusk and at night.
no cenário internacional.
quatro receberam o prêmio de mérito (Awards of Merit) e oito
todas as categorias recebe a premiação máxima (Radiance Award).
Nesta edição, Jonathan Speirs, do escritório britânico Speirs and
tendo quatro projetos reconhecidos.
IALD INTERNATIONAL
LIGHTING DESIGN AWARDS
2008
In its 25th edition, the award ceremony organised each year by the IALD
is the oldest and undoubtedly the most prestigious on the international
scene for lighting design.
Of the 14 winners, two received Special Citations, four received Awards of
Merit and eight were honoured with the Excellence Award. The competing
projects are judged on a points system in which both technical and aesthetic
factors are taken into consideration, and the work gaining the most points
among every category receives the top prize, the Radiance Award.
In this edition, Jonathan Speirs, from the British firm Speirs and Major, received
the radiance Award for the lighting design of the Barajas International
Airport, in Madrid (Photo above). This firm, it should be mentioned, did well
in this year’s awards getting recognition for no less than four projects.
You can find the fourteen prize-winners on the website: www.iald.org/
DOBRAR A LUZ?
embutidos 9 LEDs).
Bending light? The most recent creation from designer Paul Cocksedge
challenges the common-sense notion that light travels in straight lines.
The Pole light, created for the British firm Established and Sons, uses the
principle of fibre optics: a curved acrylic rod carries the light up from the
concrete base, which houses nine LEDs. “I wanted to create the illusion
of bending light,” explains the designer. The final result possesses a touch
of magic for, in addition to the light being “bent”, the 800 lumen beam
erupting from the end of the transparent acrylic rod seems to come out of
nowhere: at first sight one is unaware of the location of the light source.
This piece is available in table and floor-standing models.
INOVAÇÃO TÉCNICA E
CONCEITUAL
plasma que é excitado através de várias camadas condutoras transparentes;
fósforos serigrafados reagem ao plasma e difundem a luz.
O apelo ecologicamente correto é outro destaque do material: além
designers Christian Biecher (fotos), Arik Levy e Adrien Gardère.
recently launched a line of furniture incorporating light as a constructional
material. This feat was made possible thanks to a new material, Planilum © ,
a light-emitting glass developed in partnership with Saint-Gobain Innovations.
Resistant as well as structural, Planilum © consists of multiple layers
of glass containing a plasma gas excited by several transparent conductive
layers; silk-screened phosphors react with the plasma to diffuse light. The
appeal of the ecologically correct is another plus for this technology: quite
apart from not exposing the environment to toxic mercury vapour (as do
neon tubes), it has a long working life-span, estimated at 50 thousand
hours; and, when it finally ceases to work, it is 90% recyclable, being
essentially made of glass.
At present, a single 20mm-thick disc can light a 40m² room, consuming
only 100W. The intensity of the light is distributed over the whole surface
of the material and on both sides. Since the light emitted does not dazzle,
no filter or protection is needed to shade it. Moreover, as the disc’s
temperature remains close to that of the human body, it can be touched,
greatly increasing its possible uses.
The first products made with Planilum © were shown by Saazs at the
last Milan Furniture Salon, in the Light Prose exhibition, where the models
in this line, developed by Tomas Erel, were exhibited together with other
products specially developed by the designers Christian Biecher (photos),
Arik Levy and Adrien Gardère.
Lá, as
O piso brilhante,
opening behind it. Above the sculpture, a prism-shaped opening running
from side to side of the building , is equipped with halogen PAR 30 lights,
illuminating the back of the sculpture and the ceiling of the first floor of
the gallery, where the “Carnívoras”(‘Carnivores’) painting stands out. These
lights follow the general plan of integration into the architecture, insofar
as they are effectively concealed from view, by being positioned within this
empty space linking the ground floor with the first floor.
Access to the upper floor is by a staircase that is surrounded by the same
an end at the centre of an area totally devoid of daylight, where only a
are taken up by 184 large, blue-painted tiles that compose the work “Celacanto
floor, reflecting the walls, demanded lighting directed solely at the art work,
“As formas
conclui Carlos Fortes. (Por Valentina Figuerola)
The end result is an atmosphere propitious to artistic fruition, fruit of the
fullest possible integration of the lighting equipment into the architecture.
“The pure forms of the architectural project, with its straight lines and sharp
corners, led us to seek out a way in which the lights and lamps could be
concealed within the architecture itself, not competing with the purity of
the design, nor with the works on display — the main object of enhancement,”
Carlos Fortes concludes. (By Valentina Figuerola)
arquitetura no Brasil.
Poetry & technics A voluminous white structure, built on the banks
of the Guaíba river in Porto Alegre (RS), incorporates three treasures: the
Maria Camargo Collection, with works by Iberê Camargo, the creative architectural
genius of Álvaro Siza and the ingenuity of the lighting project
from the Portuguese firms GPIC/GOP. This is the Iberê Camargo Museum,
inaugurated in May of this year. Awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice
Architectural Biennial in 2002, this project is becoming an architectural milestone
in Brazil. Built to house over four thousand works by Iberê Camargo,
one of the greatest 20th century Brazilian artists, the building is equipped
with nine exhibition halls, a workshop for paintings, an auditorium and
an underground car park.
To bring the museum into being, nearly ten years were needed, and the
Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza was chosen for having — in common with
the artist from Rio Grande do Sul — the quest for perfection as one of the
L+D
main characteristics of his work. With his eye for detail, Siza also took the
time to design some of the museum’s lights and furniture.
The building occupies 8,200 m² of the area of a disused quarry, a site donated
by the Porto Alegre City Council and overlooking the Guaíba river, the city’s picture
postcard and source of great pride to its inhabitants. As in the Guggenheim
Museum in New York, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright , the tour of the exhibits
may be accomplished in either of two manners: by ramps or by elevators.
The rooms on all the floors open onto the atrium, or can be closed by
removable panels of up to 4m in height, allowing the entry of daylight
from the atrium itself. The top-floor rooms are lit with daylight and artificial
light through roof lanterns, double-glazed with access between
the glazing for cleaning and lighting adjustments. The atrium area itself
is lit by a lantern located on the roof-top terrace and also by openings
to the outside in the curving wall.
The lighting concept present in Álvaro Siza’s architectural plan demanded
that the artificial lighting systems behave similarly to daylight. “Thus the
technical challenge presented was to provide the ‘false lanterns’ of the exhibition
halls on the 1st and 2nd floors with a lighting system that worked
exactly like the daylight (and artificial light) lanterns of the 3rd floor. The
solution we found, after a series of prototype tests and theoretical models
(carried out at Dialux),” explains engineer Alexandre Martins, from GPIC,
“was to transform the lanterns into ‘light boxes’, installing inside them
rows of lights suspended half-way up and pointing upwards. With this
procedure, it was possible to improve significantly the diffusion of the light
and its uniformity on the visible surface of the lanterns. Besides this, all
the lanterns (both true and false) are fitted with lighting tracks concealed
inside, and these permit the installation of spotlights using T5 lamps of
28W/840, with a colour temperature of 4,000K.
Integrated into the building’s automation system, there is also a lighting
control system permitting the use of pre-programmed scenes, all maintaining
the same colour temperature and an 85% CRI.
On the access ramps between the floors of the exhibition halls, the
artificial lighting follows the same principle of lanterns and the solution
As salas do último piso recebem
O espaço do
A iluminação natural penetra a cirulação (rampas
todo o edifício | Daylight reaches the circulation
area (ramps and footbridge) through various
openings, and “paints” Álvaro Siza’s architecture.
The lanterns (top of facing page) have a marked
presence throughout the building
barreira UV em vidro com características especiais, a 1m acima da cobertura;
pontos estratégicos, permitem a apreciação do famoso pôr-do-sol
L+D
54
chosen here was the creation of slits of light measuring 600x43mm and
900x43mm, composed of aluminium frames fitted into the false ceilings
and using polycarbonate diffusers (equipped respectively with either T5
14W/840 or T5 21W/840 lamps). The Museum’s energy efficiency is also
a notable feature, according to Martins. “I would say it is one of the most
efficient projects that our firm has ever worked on. There is only 3 to 6W/
m² for the whole building, depending on the scenario chosen, far below
what is usual in museums, which varies from 10 to 15 W/m², and this meets
the most demanding international norms.”
The other challenge of the environmental control projects was to balance
the daylight — entering through the lanterns on the 3rd floor — and keep
the ambient temperature at an ideal level so as not to affect the artist’s
works, whose materials are extremely light-sensitive. Detailed studies were
carried out to prevent incident ultra-violet radiation from affecting the works
on display, and ensure that the radiation entering the building remained
below the level of 47W/m², a value considered ideal by experts.
The lanterns are of the sandwich type and are composed of a UV shield
of special glass placed one metre above the roof, a second UV shield, and
a third of matt glass, placed about 3m below the second, ensuring diffusion
of both the natural and artificial light. According to the engineer, the
artificial light from these lanterns is assured by rows of lights fitted in the
“false lanterns”, suspended on steel cables above the glass shields, and the
daylight control system is located above the artificial light.
The aforementioned quest for perfection on the part of Siza is seen in the
attention to details, such as the openings which the architect placed over the
ramps connecting the floors: located at strategic points, they permit one to
appreciate the famous sunset over the Guaíba river. “In terms of UV protection,
these windows are of less concern to us, since they are in shade during the
L+D
no Rio Guaíba.
Projeto complexo? Sem dúvida. Maior complexidade,
premiações no IALD International Lighting Design Awards 2008:
Award of Excellence e Sustainability Award.
Hall.
Symbiosis of nature with technology A great hall on a monumental
scale designed to house a multiplicity of functions — from exhibitions and
lectures to gala balls. A complex project? Undoubtedly. Further complexity,
however, was added by the architects and designers involved when they
decided to integrate the interior of the building with its surroundings, an
unusual approach in this kind of project. The building in question is the
new Kansas City Convention Center Ballroom, which has won two prizes
at the International Lighting Design (IALD) Awards 2008, the Award of
Excellence and the Sustainability Award.
Known also as Bartle Hall, the convention centre in Kansas City is one of
the largest in the USA, its huge scale also marking its presence in the new
ballroom, inaugurated as part of the Bartle Hall expansion scheme. With a
floor area of over 12,000m², this new hall offered a real challenge to the
architects, lighting and interior designers, not only because of its functional
complexity, but also with regard to making this space friendly and inviting.
Within this context, natural lighting was treated as an essential instrument.
L+D
“Maximising daylight to conserve energy and celebrate the presence of nature
in this otherwise enclosed environment was key to the lighting design,”
explains lighting designer Derek Porter, responsible for the new ballroom’s
lighting project. The result is a space that flees from the conventional arrangements
usually to be found in this type of building — in general, event halls
and convention centres are thought of as “black boxes” offering no kind of
connection with their surroundings. In the new Bartle Hall Ballroom expansion,
natural lighting has been treated as a dynamic feature of the design,
offering a connection of the building with external elements and allowing
its occupants a notion of both time of day and weather conditions. Natural
light is used in abundance throughout the new building – as much in the
lobby as in the ballroom itself — and this was one of the reasons securing for
this project LEED Silver certification, given by the US Green Building Council
in order to identify buildings designed in an environmentally responsible
manner. The project’s overall load, service areas included, is 19% below the
maximum permitted power density (w/ft²).
“Daylight entering various linear ‘incisions’ and is directed purposefully
onto selected surfaces for visual animation and to provide orientation
to key areas (such as ballroom entry), while offering practical spatial illumination,”
Porter explains.
In the lobby, apart from the overhead daylight, huge panes of glass
allow light to enter: Moveable blinds inside allow control of sunlight
without blocking out exterior views.
Inside the ballroom, the sunlight is filtered and dispersed by a ceiling of
translucent, stretched fabric panels, providing adequate interior brightness
and contrast levels. The natural light levels inside the hall vary from 215 to
645 lux, depending on the time of day and the locality within the area (the
highest levels are reached immediately under the panels and the lowest
in the hall’s centre). When natural light is undesirable for certain specific
purposes, motorised blinds can block out the skylights.
Natural lighting is complemented by a complex system of 361 LED luminaires
arranged in two sets: one backlights the stretched fabric panels, while
the other grazes the rippling sculpted wall. The whole system is commanded
through 930 control channels: touch-screens with a digital colour wheel enable
one to “paint” the space in any desired colour. Pre-programmed scenes
can be adjusted to cater for special arrangements of the hall. Since walls and
ceiling are programmed separately, lighting flexibility is even greater.
Besides the LEDs, various other light sources — PAR38 (250W) halogen
elevados, no centro do salão).
específicos, persianas motorizadas bloqueiam as clarabóias.
A carga total do
projeto, incluindo as áreas de serviço, é 19% inferior à densidade de
potência (w/m 2 ) máxima permitida.
dinamizar o ambiente e proporcionar orientação em algumas áreaschave
Another element of nature also pervades this project: water. This is a
feature directly relating to the character of the city itself. Known as the
“City of Fountains” (over 200 springs are scattered throughout the city ),
Kansas City is situated at the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas rivers,
where it was first founded as an important centre for river trade. Thus the
project was conceived incorporating the notion of water as a reference to
the identity of Kansas City itself.
The pattern in the carpet and the rippling design of the relief on the
panels covering the walls of the hall remind one of moving waters. But it is
in the circular hanging lights, purpose-built for this project by the designers,
that this theme finds its most poetic expression. The notion of raindrops
falling in a pool, making a series of concentric ripples, provided the
inspiration for these “rings”. Made of polished aluminium in various sizes
(ranging from 75mm to 15m in diameter), these luminaires house warm
white LEDs, which, pointing upwards, reflect from the mirrored surface of
the ceiling, “enhancing the illusion of depth and phenomenological qualities
of light and water interplay,” observes Porter. “It was a simple way to
bring a decorative ‘chandelier’s’ presence to the project while avoiding such
conventional associations,” he concludes. (By Winnie Bastian)
granito.
L+D
Poetic minimalism A pedestrian footbridge, snaking smoothly over the
lake, is the latest attraction at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, Greater
London. At first sight, the Sackler Crossing appears to be floating above
the lake, thanks to its almost invisible supporting structure, giving it an air
of “sculptural abstraction,” according to its architect, John Pawson.
Pawson is well-known for the minimalist nature of his architecture,
and the new bridge — built with clean lines and a reduced palette of
materials (just bronze and granite) — follows the same line of thinking.
“Planks” of black granite, supported by a concealed metal frame, are arrayed
in rhythmic bands like railway sleepers, forming the bridge deck.
The baluster is composed of a line of low, cast-bronze, cantilevered uprights,
fitted flush between the granite slabs. Viewed from the end of
the bridge, these uprights are perceived as a solid element; seen from
the side, however, “this solidity fragments, allowing views through and
affording the structure a pleasing material ambiguity, with light used to
preserve this transparency after nightfall,” elaborates the architect.
designers.
To create the lighting project for the bridge, lighting designers Mark
Major and Philip Rose were looking for fidelity to Pawson’s minimalist
approach. The lighting concept, according to the designers, is extremely
simple: “express the form of the bridge through light whilst at the same
time providing sufficient illumination to cross it.”
To this end, they used on the bridge a single type of light fitting, custombuilt
for this project: a 47mm diameter uplight using a single 1W white
LED. The lights are recessed into the ends of the granite “planks” forming
the bridge deck, keeping their presence discreet, as the designers had
wished. The idea is that, in the daytime, “the light fixtures virtually disappear
whilst providing a discreet and subtle intervention after dark,” they
explain; and, for such simplicity of effect to be achieved, planning of the
project in the minutest detail was necessary.
The quest for subtlety in the lighting project is also the result of the context
of the Royal Botanic Gardens. Since the greater part of the gardens lies in
darkness at night, the designers wanted to create an effect in which “the
bridge softly shimmers in the darkness giving a moonlit effect and reflects
in the water of the Lake,” they remark. Functionality, of course, was not
neglected. Each one of the 998 lights “gently illuminates the surfaces of
the bronze uprights, so as not only to reveal their forms, but also to reflect
onto the bridge floor allowing people to make the crossing,” they add.
Seeking a visual counterpoint to the bridge itself, the lighting designers
also lit up the trees on the little island in the middle of the lake. To do this
they used seven CMH 35W spot and floodlights in a cool white tone (4200K);
blue filters were added to some of these. When seen from one side, the trees
are lit in blue, and from the other, they are lit in a golden white tone. “The
final effect is extremely ‘Japanese’ in feel,” the designers remark.
With such a minimalist approach in both architecture and lighting design,
the Sackler Crossing project astounds one through the expressiveness of its end
result, and proves that often, in terms of lighting, “less is more”. (W.B.)
a luz tenha um efeito degradê, o qual, aliado à forma suave
da ponte, traz delicadeza ao projeto | Seen from the front,
the guard-rail appears as a solid feature; yet viewed from the
side, it is seen to be transparent. Note especially the lights built
Los Angeles, premiado com o Award of Merit no IALD International
Lighting Design Awards 2008.
LUZ E
MOVIMENTO
Light & motion “Cinema is light projected through space and time.”
This simple phrase seems to have been underlying the whole of the project
for the Billy Wilder Theater, incorporating the Hammer Museum, at the
University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), which won an IALD Award
of Merit at the International Lighting Design Awards 2008.
This space was designed to exhibit UCLA’s Film & Television Archive , which
keeps a substantial stock of historic films in their original formats. For this
reason, they are equipped with a wide range of projection equipment, ranging
from the most primitive — with which they project classic films printed on
fragile cellulose nitrate stock — to the very latest in digital technology.
In architect Michael Maltzan’s design, the interplay of light and movement,
so typical of the cinema, is transferred into this space using a minimal
vocabulary based essentially on the light.
reduzida, e proporcionava o efeito buscado. Disponíveis em comprimentos
tubos.
apenas o tubo fluorescente.
A disposição regular das luzes no lobby “representa a experiência
cotidiana do mundo comum.
do mundo cinematográfico”, explica Paul Zaferiou.
analisa Zaferiou. O efeito inverso acontece ao final do filme.
chegada e a saída do público.
randômica, no interior da sala | The lighting works progressively: in the ticket
office area (above), the lights are concealed; in the theatre lobby (facing
page), rhythmically arranged fluorescent lamps introduce the language to
be used, in a random manner, within the auditorium itself
In the cinema auditorium, “strips” of light, apparently floating beneath the
ceiling, radiate outwards from the screen, giving the impression of speed. These
are produced by 128 strips of LEDs, suspended on light structures, which being
painted black, disappear into the darkness, becoming virtually invisible.
Although the architect’s original plan was to make these strips in neon,
the lighting designers responsible for the project, Paul Zaferiou and Jennifer
Piszak, suggested the use of acrylic rods wit built-in LEDs of 3,500K colour
temperature. This suggestion was unconditionally accepted since the use of
LEDs offered a whole series of advantages over neon: improved brightness
levels, energy economy, ease of installation and reduced maintenance, as
well as producing the desired effect. Available in lengths of 1.20 to 2.40
m , these LED rods can be joined seamlessly.
Linear lights are also a feature of the lobby, but this time in a more static
and rhythmic arrangement, as well as using another source, special T6
fluorescent tubes in which the electrodes are located not at the ends, but
at the back of the lamp. The aim, according to the designers, was for only
the light to be visible, concealing any hardware. To enhance this effect,
the body of the light fitting was recessed into the plaster-board ceiling,
leaving only the fluorescent tube visible.
The regular arrangement of the lobby lights “represents the everyday
experience of the ‘world at large’. Once in the theatre, the lines of light
are transformed to express the energy and excitement of the cinematic
world,” explains Paul Zaferiou.
The feeling of movement induced by the strips of light occupying the
auditorium’s ceiling and walls is accentuated by the lighting controls. When
the film starts, the LED strips, connected in 12 independent circuits, fade
out sequentially, from the front of the theatre to the back. “It is as if the
light were being drawn into by the projector,” remarks Zaferiou. The reverse
effect is produced when the film ends.
Although designed principally as a film theatre, the hall also has to cater
for other occasional use, as for lectures, round tables, theatrical productions
and musical shows. For such varied uses, the designers have created
various different pre-programmed scenarios, as well as scenarios for other
occasions such as the arrival and departure of the audience.
The Billy Wilder Theater clearly shows us that it is more than possible
to reconcile the functional requirements of a project with a powerful
emotional impact. (W.B.)
GUINTER
PARSCHALK
Guinter herdou do pai, engenheiro devotado e referência importante
no mínimo, inovadores.
In spite of his truly European name and physical appearance, Guinter Paschalk
considers himself typically Brazilian. At 54 years, this lighting designer from
Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo, is today one of the most important
names in his field, both in his home country and abroad. Son of a German
father and an Austrian mother, Guinter inherited from his father, a dedicated
engineer and important reference in his upbringing, an obsession for a job
well-done, but he attributes to his Brazilian side his intense curiosity, which
has led him to concepts that are, at the very least, highly innovative.
If his father wanted him to be an engineer, he himself — “I’d like to do
something completely different from all that’s been done before,” — preferred,
at the tender age of 14, to work as a motor mechanic in a garage in
Cambuci, in the capital of São Paulo state. “My father asked me what I wanted
to do. I told him I liked cars and that I thought I’d like to design them. Though
he wanted me to study engineering, he did something really wonderful and
suggested I went to work in a repair shop, since there was no better place to
learn about the subject. I arrived in sparkling clean overalls and went to work
on that first day cleaning greasy parts in petrol. There I learnt all I needed to
know about cars,” asserts the designer.
Ana Spina
A passion for machines and art
“I went through every stage in the garage: basic mechanics, body-work,
paint-work and precision mechanics. The truth is, I’d always loved machines,”
recalls Guinter, who, even as a four year-old, showed a precocious leaning
towards visual arts when he learnt to do drawings. “I used to spend my
Saturdays browsing through the plans for the industrial plants my father
was building; that was when I learnt to draw. He used to ask me all sorts of
questions about notions of perspective and two-dimensionality,” states this
professional, who ended up graduating from the Brás Cubas Faculty of Engineering
and Urbanism in Mogi das Cruzes, state of São Paulo.
“While still in my teens, I grew interested in painting and art. Even before
college I did some open courses in decoration. Later I was a trainee in technical
drawing with the Caixa Economica state bank. I didn’t want to do architecture
as such. I always imagined a mixture of science and art and, moving in this
direction, graphic arts looked to be the way for me,” Parschalk elucidates.
The artist-technician, ever on the move, then veered towards the field of
visual communications. “I started working with the creation of logotypes and
of graphic and volumetric packagings and even with product design. That
was when I went to work at the old Department of Artistic Information and
Documentation, IDART, set up in 1975 by the São Paulo Municipal Secretary
for Culture, and later incorporated into the São Paulo Cultural Centre. Also
dating from this period was my job as Maurício Nogueira Lima’s assistant
and my contact with all those concrete artists like Ermelindo Fiaminghi,
Sacilotto and Volpi — I learnt the technique of egg tempera with Volpi
himself,” reveals the architect-designer, who had his own first individual
exhibition of paintings at the State Pinacoteca in 1984.
A grande indústria
Big industry
In 1979, soon after graduating in architecture, Guinter swung in the direction
of post-graduation in industrial design in Austria. “At that time it was a
rather complicated period in Germany, with the market closed to foreigners.
As I had a German passport, I chose Austria and was accepted,” Paschalk
recalls. The focus of his research was well-defined: “I had never been able to
come to terms with this thing of “one-way” packaging, so I decided to develop
a project on reusable and recyclable packaging, and I got a grant from
the Austrian Ministry of Science and Technology in Linz, one of the largest
industrial cities in Austria, on the frontier with Germany,” he relates.
The unfolding of this graphic designer’s career in Europe was meteoric. In
parallel with his post-graduate studies in Linz, Guinter started work in one of
the largest advertising agencies in Austria. Following this he became a design
director for Siemens, where he worked on everything from design analysis and
semiotics projects for this German giant, to work on the Athens police headquarters,
walkie-talkies for football linesmen, and computers of the “latest
generation” — “which, at that time, most resembled gigantic refrigerators,”
Guinter Paschalk jokes.
In 1984, back in Brazil, this professional continued working in the field
of product design, either under contract to agencies such as Formafunção,
Plano Collor”, marcaram a entrada definitiva do arquiteto no mundo do
lighting design.
As colunas receberam
The Umecendi exhibition, occurring in 1989, was to give a fresh turn to his
professional life. The show, whose name means “clarity” in Tupi-Guarani, a
Brazilian Indian language, included 31 lights based on native culture and, in
the reflectors seem to float. One always thinks of the horizon as below, never
we had a really challenging project. We went for a system combining natural
that does not exist in native Indian culture. For this very reason this proposal
energy conservation and its responsible use,” notes Paschalk. “This project
bigger jobs involving lighting concepts,” states Guinter, who today is working
“I consider light the first impression in architecture. Thus it is an essential
element in a project, not just a complementary one,” the lighting
designer points out. “Since light is revealed according to the materials,
the surfaces and tones of the finishings are all-important. Therefore, the
professional doing the lighting design has to work together with the
architect in order to create the greatest possible visual impact,” explains
Paschalk, who has just inaugurated the lighting project for the façade of
the Centro Empresarial de São Paulo (Cenesp), apart from also finding
the time to give lectures on the use of fluorescent lighting at the Professional
Lighting Designers Association (PLDA) in England.
“I am totally opposed to the type of fluorescent lamp with an integral
ballast — its disposal is anti-ecological and, when it’s fragmented, it releases
highly toxic materials that directly contaminate the water table, putting an
incalculable burden on the environment,” attacks the designer, who further
criticises the lack of intelligence in the process of optimising lighting. “Every
lamp generates heat and all that is not turned into light in a lamp becomes
heat. Any environment that does not take into account the life-cycle of
lamps and their maintenance, quite apart from the type of lamp used, ends
up producing indirect maintenance costs, like, for example, a comfortable
interior temperature, when you have to spend more on air-conditioning,”
explains Guinter, who, as well as his lectures in London, Milan and Frankfurt,
is also handling lighting projects all over the world, from Kazakhstan and
Russia to Dubai, as well as Angola, the USA, Argentina, Peru and, of course
Brazil, where he has his office at a discreet address in the western zone of
No entanto, a Light+Building
ditar as tendências formais.
Zumtobel, Louis Poulsen e Troll.
The 5 th edition of Light+Building, the largest lighting trade fair in the
world, took place in Frankfurt, Germany, from 6th to 11th April. This
event, with 2,173 exhibitors occupying twelve pavilions, attracted no
less than 165,000 visitors from a wide range of countries, an astonishing
increase of 22% more than the last event in 2006.
As in 2006, the first impression of the visitor to Light+Building 2008
was of “more of the same”. In fact, it will be hard, over the next few years,
to mount such an impressive event, so packed with tangible innovations,
as that of 2006, at which LEDs, control systems and the infinite array of
colours left visitors stunned.
In all truth, what we witnessed at the last two editions of this event was the
evolution of LEDs and of their application. As a result, Light+Building 2008,
more accurately assessed, brings us to an awareness that we are finally “getting
there”. LEDs are now found in totally real applications, in fittings for general
use, and thus less conceptual and occasional than those seen in 2006. It would
seem, as designer Fernando Prado remarked, that Light+Building 2008 bridged
the gap to what used to be regarded as the “future of lighting”.
Another striking aspect noted concerns the role of the main lamp
manufacturers. The impression one got in 2006 was that there was a
certain “no man’s land”, within which many LED manufacturers had lost
their way. There was a general consensus that the future was pointing
towards this technology, yet no-one knew exactly what lay ahead or the
way to get there. Light+Building 2008 seems to bring with it signs that
Osram and Philips have now taken the lead, investing all of their technological
and research capabilities in LEDs. The evolution of diodes has been
quite remarkable, not only with regard to their power, but also — and
principally — with regard to their colour temperature.
Apart from the displayed LEDs and their innumerable practical applications,
another remarkable feature was the evolution of optical polymer diffusers
which efficiently reconcile the balance between output and glare control.
As for design, Light+Building 2008 really seems to have assumed the
role of a technology fair, leaving to Euroluce (Milan) the task of setting
formal trends. In this respect, the general feeling of “more of the same”
was heightened, since much of what was on display as “new” at the fair
had already appeared in Italy, in April last year. The few surprises were
the exception rather than the rule, such as those presented by the firms
Zumtobel, Louis Poulsen and Troll.
As for the participation of Brazilian firms, once again Lumini marked
its presence with its busy stand in Pavilion 1.2. Light+Building 2008 also
marked an important chapter in the story of L+D magazine, which, by
invitation of Messe Frankfurt, gained the opportunity to exhibit at this
event for the first time. With its own stand in the foyer of Pavilion 4, L+D
was visited by thousands of lighting professionals from all over the world,
who showed great interest in this publication, apart, of course, from the
Brazilians who celebrated our participation.
Spherolit utilizado no spot Emanon.
out their new SPHEROLIT line of reflectors, whose technology is based on
the division of the reflector into individual areas (spherolites) having a threedimensional,
spherical curvature. Through complex calculations and simulations,
the spherolites are arranged and shaped so as to achieve the specific
light distribution required. This reflector reconciles, in a most efficient manner,
the balance between output and control. In the picture 1 we see the Spherolit
reflector used in the Emanon spotlight.
Another highlight from this firm is the elegant line of MIDIPOLL bollards.
