In a 1950’s metropolis, as São Paulo, some urban situations and cultural manifestations coexisted. Inhabiting a metropolis implies to the human being several specifics behaviors and the adherence to meanings that are unique to big cities. When analyzing the development of São Paulo and which paths have been trodden so that the “country’s locomotive” could acquire such fame, it is established that São Paulo and the national urban development haven’t occurred evenly. Within this diversity and countering the vainglorious speech of his time, the figure of Adoniran Barbosa appears: a confirmed bohemian that, in his walks around town, found inspiration to write songs that would become a symbol for the city and reach great popular appeal. What makes the work of Adoniran Barbosa so peculiar is the ability it has to describe a largely studied and analyzed city through the popular classes’ point of view, always in tune with the voices of those who were part of the thoroughly studied scenario however, hardly seen and listened.
