The way the giant Furnas was born

1954 1956 1958

Francisco Noronha and Anton Rydland,

engineers at Cemig find the right place

for the project to build a large hydroelectric

power plant: two side large walls

with more than 100 meters high in

Grande River, in the region of Capitólio

(MG). They photograph the region and

bring the idea to Cemig's technical director,

John Reginald Cotrim.

In January, Juscelino Kubitschek (JK)

takes office as President of the Republic.

In May, the president of the National

Bank for Economic Development

(BNDE), the engineer Lucas Lopes, defines

the basic characteristics of the Furnas'

project, justifying its inclusion as

one of the priority constructions of the

JK government's Goals Plan.

The company obtains the first financings

and starts the constructions of the

dams and diversion tunnels of the power

plant. The construction of transmission

lines (LT) begins and other work fronts

are still in full swing.

1955 1957 1959

Cemig takes the first steps to formulate

the construction project. John Cotrim

seeing reports and studies, turns into an

enthusiastic about the construction of

Furnas Power Plant and defends the

idea in lectures and meetings with many

sectors of society.

On February 28, 1957, President JK signs

the document of creation of Central Elétrica

de Furnas. The mission of the newborn

company is to build the Furnas

Hydroelectric Power Plant to prevent the

collapse of energy in the Center-South

region of Brazil. Furnas' first president,

the engineer John Reginald Cotrim, was

the Cemig’s vice president.

The company boost its civil constructions

and starts the works of

the Furnas-São Paulo Transmission

Line. It continues the diversion

constructions of Grande River,

through two diversion tunnels. In

the second semester, it starts the

construction of the 345 kV Furnas-

Belo Horizonte Transmission Line.
