Holds a degree in Mechatronics Engineering from Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC-MG) and an MBA in strategic business management from ITA-ESPM, specializing in advanced finance at the New York Institute of Finance. He began his executive career in 2004 at Wavin (ex-Mexichem, owner of the Amanco Wavin brand), where he held the position of President for Brazil (from 2012 to 2018) and Chief Financial Officer for Latin America, accounting for 13 countries. In 2014, he was elected by Forbes magazine as one of the top 10 Brazilian Chief Executives youinger than 40. Since 2018, he has been Managing Director of CMPC in Brazil, the largest company in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, according to the VPG rating. T he pulp-producing industry has become an example of excellence in management. Professionals who hold important positions are recognized throughout the business world for their curriculum and achievements as heads of Sector giants. Mauricio Harger is one of those. In 2018, he was invited to take over the management board of CMPC, a Chilean pulp producer with a plant in Rio Grande do Sul, and, exclusively for CELULOSE&PAPEL, explains in detail his trajectory, the current position of the Company, and the plans for the future. 70
Celulose: Conte-nos sobre sua caminhada até a diretoria-geral da CMPC? Mauricio: Iniciei meus estudos na PUC (MG) em 1994, no curso de Engenharia Mecatrônica. Durante o período de faculdade atuei como supervisor na ABS Consultoria, entre 1997 e 2001. Então entendi a importância de me tornar um profissional extremamente qualificado rapidamente, um ano após concluir a graduação, ingressei no ITA-ESPM, no MBA de Gestão Estratégica de Negócios. Em paralelo à atividade acadêmica, trabalhava como supervisor na consultoria Audit Brasil Consultores para ajudar a bancar meus estudos. Em 2004, com o certificado de conclusão do MBA em mãos, dei início à trajetória executiva, e consegui um emprego na área financeira da Wavin (ex-Mexichem, detentora da marca Amanco Wavin), e lá ascendi ao cargo de CFO. Em 2011 me tornei CFO da empresa para América Latina, respondendo por 13 países. Em 2012, cheguei ao cargo de presidente da Wavin no Brasil. Em 2016, cursei nova especialização pela The Wharton School, em gestão de pessoas com ênfase em liderança organizacional. Logo depois, em 2018, aceitei o desafio de assumir a direção-geral da CMPC no Brasil. Celulose: Como avalia o momento da empresa? Mauricio: Estamos em um momento bastante positivo do setor de celulose no país, nos encontrando em uma situação muito fértil no que diz respeito aos novos investimentos e crescimento do segmento como um todo. Ao longo do período de pandemia, tivemos uma estratégia bastante assertiva, rápida e colocada em prática de forma exitosa, focando no trabalho remoto para as áreas administrativas, escalonamento para áreas industriais e, especialmente, no contato próximo com nossa equipe para identificação de casos e encaminhamento imediato aos órgãos de saúde. Assim, conseguimos manter os empregos dos nossos cerca de 7 mil colaboradores diretos e indiretos, contratar novos profissionais e bater recorde de produção nos últimos anos. Celulose: E a pandemia, afetou o setor de celulose? Mauricio: O setor de celulose é considerado de extrema necessidade, por isso, não parou. Porém, Celulose: What was your career before joining the CMPC Management Board of Directors? Harger: I started my studies at PUC (MG) in 1994 in Mechatronics Engineering. During college, I worked as a supervisor at ABS Consultoria between 1997 and 2001. As I quickly understood the importance of becoming a highly qualified professional, one year after graduating from PUC (MG), I began my MBA in Strategic Business Management studies at ITA-ESPM. In parallel to my academic activity, I worked as a supervisor at Audit Brasil Consultores to help support my studies. In 2004, upon completing my MBA, with a certificate in hand, I started the executive trajectory. First, I got a job in the financial area of Wavin (ex-Mexichem, owner of the Amanco Wavin brand). There, I rose to the Chief Financial Officer position. In 2011, I became Chief Financial Officer of the Company for Latin America, accounting for 13 countries. In 2012, I took on the role of President of Wavin in Brazil. In 2016, I undertook a specialization course in People Management at The Wharton School, emphasizing organizational leadership. Soon after, in 2018, I accepted the challenge of taking over the position of Managing Director of CMPC in Brazil. Celulose: How do you see the Company’s current position? Harger: We are in a very positive moment in the Pulp Sector in Brazil, finding ourselves in a very fertile situation concerning new investments and growth of the segment as a whole. Throughout the pandemic, we had a very assertive, fast, and successful strategy, focusing on remote work for the administrative areas, escalation to industrial areas, and, especially, close contact with our team to identify cases and immediately refer them to health agencies. Thus, we managed to maintain the jobs of our approximately 7 thousand direct and indirect employees, hire new professionals, and set a recent-year production record.
