The name <strong>Floci</strong> came from wool (floccus, <strong>in</strong>Lat<strong>in</strong>) trad<strong>in</strong>g practiced by the resi<strong>de</strong>nts, as well asby shepherds com<strong>in</strong>g with their herds from themounta<strong>in</strong> area to Balta Ialomiţei area, to spend thew<strong>in</strong>ter. XVIth-XIXth century maps show <strong>Floci</strong>Town on Ialomiţa River, next to its embouchure <strong>in</strong>tothe Danube.In the last quarter of the XIXth century, theteacher A. Popescu from Giurgeni <strong>de</strong>scribed <strong>in</strong> A.Odobescu's “Cestionarul Arheologic” what was leftof <strong>Floci</strong> Town. It had a consi<strong>de</strong>rable extent, hav<strong>in</strong>gthe dry river bed go<strong>in</strong>g through the middle and tworu<strong>in</strong>ed brick churches. Weapons, stones, silverjewelry, human bones, and bronze items appeared <strong>in</strong>the tillage.The historian Nicolae Iorga visited the town's oldcenter, and i<strong>de</strong>ntified few funeral engrav<strong>in</strong>gs fromchurches' ru<strong>in</strong>s, which were reused for build<strong>in</strong>g thePiua Petrii village church.First archeological researches were conducted <strong>in</strong>1961, then <strong>in</strong> 1965-1968, by archeologists fromIalomita County Museum, who recovered rich anddiverse materials, form numerous ceramicfragments, to a bronze vessels <strong>de</strong>posit and twoXVIth-XVIIth centuries hoards. They alsoi<strong>de</strong>ntified the extent of the site, spread around thetown's center, which lies <strong>in</strong> the meadow on the leftbank of Ialomiţa, on both si<strong>de</strong>s of DN2A road, 7 kmwest from Giurgeni.
