Easter Sunday is a huge day in the
life and ministry of our church. Sometimes,
after the egg hunts are over and our families
return home, we can be fooled into thinking
that the season of Easter is over. However,
in the church, Eastertide lasts 50 days. As
we move through those days together, here
are a few practical ways to hold onto the joy
and celebration of Christ’s resurrection.
Practice Gratitude: Through these fifty days,
watch for God’s good gifts all around you.
Look for signs of Jesus’ resurrection in
events and people in your life and
community. Pay attention to the small gifts
of daily life, and thank God for each of
them. You might want to consider starting a
thankfulness journal and commit to adding
five items to the list each day. Or, you may
want to partner with others to talk through
the things you’re thankful for each week. Be
sure to pray your thanks as well!
Focus on Light: Watch for the word ‘light’ in
Scripture, songs on the radio, hymns, and
poetry. Write a poem or statement about the
ways Jesus is your light, and ask for further
light in specific areas of your life and in the
lives of loved ones. Use various names for
God and Jesus in simple prayers: “Lord
Jesus Christ, light of the world, shine your
light on me” (John 8:12). “Word of God, be
the lamp to my feet and the light on my
path” (Psalm 119:105). These prayers can be
prayed for others as well as yourself.
were held in slavery by the fear of death”
(Hebrews 2:15). In what ways has Jesus
freed you from that fear? In what ways
would you like to experience more freedom?
What do you think that might look like?
Journal or talk with a friend about the role
fear of death has played in your life. Pray
your thanks, and pray for further growth in
claiming the hope of the resurrection in your
own life.
Celebrate New Life: Take time to plant a
flower or tree, spend time in nature, and
celebrate the way that the earth is celebrating
Christ’s resurrection all around you. Thank
God for the many reminders that new life
comes into places that we once thought were
dead.
Eastertide is a time to begin moving out into
the world with the good news of the
resurrection. May we experience that new
life and new hope in our own lives so that
our witness can be one of joy!
May you sense God’s blessings in your life
each day,
Children’s Ministry News from Alison
This year’s Easter Egg hunt was one egg-citing event!!!
There were three separate sections for egg hunting this year.
Children 3 & under were on the playground, 4 through
kindergarten were on the hill leading
to the CEB, and first through fifth
grade were on the big hill. All children
had an awesome time!
Ryan Billings was the winner of this
years jackpot egg!!! Congrats Ryan!!
Thank you to all who help to make
this event a fun success for our kids!
Michelle's View from the Ridge
Hunting Ridge Retreat welcomed tons of excited youth in March, including Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church
Girls Retreat, two weekends of St. Marks, and All Saints. The ministry leaders and youth all seemed pleased with
their time at HRR and one of our groups even rebooked for the next two years.
First Baptist, ya’ll can be proud of yourselves! We started out the month with the Conrow Family Gathering,
then hosted the Easter Sunrise Service and ended with our successful HRR Spring Work Day. A huge thank you
to all the volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning and came out, in the rain, to help us clean up our trails.
Today I wanted to share with you the testimony of Debi Cali, Grace United Methodist Church youth leader to
encourage your hearts about the ministry work taking place out here at Hunting Ridge.
At Hunting Ridge, we hope that as FBC members you can catch the vision that HRR is a window to reach our
world for Christ. Your prayers and support help keep this active ministry of FBC alive.
“Thank you and the Church for all the sacrifices that go into this labor of love. The chapel, the fellowship hall,
the cabins, the lake, Ms. Mellissa and family, all together are the perfect fit for leaving my cares at the door and
allowing me to focus on the retreat, the students and GOD. Praise God for this ministry. One student that had
come 3 years ago, has felt a call to ministry over the past year. That student, came back, and preached their first
sermon at the retreat this weekend. That student wanted it to be at HRR because that was the place where God
is... IT was a highlight of our weekend, but also of my career. LEADING someone else to be in ministry. YOU
all are providing a setting for this to happen. PRAISE GOD on HIGH!!”
Watch Me Learn
From Early Years-Working together for a great start
“I can say my ABC’s!” “Listen to me count to 10!” Children this age are eager to show you what they know.
Keep the learning-and the excitement going with these suggestions:
Read along with me: Encourage a love of reading by making your child an active participant. If a story has
repeated phrases, put him in charge of reading them. Pause before the last word of each line in a nursery rhyme,
and have him supply it. Turn the tables at bedtime: give him a book he knows by heart, and ask him to read to
you.
Make writing an everyday thing: Offer your youngster meaningful opportunities to write letters and words. If she
pretends to be a rock star, request her autograph. Or if she draws a birthday card for a relative, ask her to dictate
what she wants to say, and use a highlighter to print her words. Then, she, could trace over the letters with a
crayon or marker.
Just add math-to everything: Playing with math concepts will develop your child’s number sense. Have him sort
and count beads to make bracelets. In the grocery store, challenge him to spot every number, 1-10, on signs and
labels. At snack time, he might explore shapes by connecting pineapple chunks or strawberries with toothpicks to
form flat shapes (squares, triangles, rectangles) or 3-D ones (cubes, pyramids).
This 6-week FREE course will teach you a fun
and practical approach to raising wonderful
children. During the course, you will learn
about the two rules of Love and Logic®, the
Anticipatory Consequence and ways to
neutralize arguing and much more. You will
walk out with information and ideas that you
can use right away. The group will meet for
dinner (if you would like to join us) in the
upstairs Fellowship Hall and then will gather in
the Men’s Bible Class for the Love and Logic®
course. We will meet on the Wednesday
evenings listed.
must be replaced. It is very old and worn out, as it was installed
in the late 1950’s when the CEB was built.
$4,000.00 is the cost for the replacement. The E.T. Clark Men's
Bible Class has decided to head up the effort to raise the funds
for this project.
Anyone who would like to contribute to this effort, please send
your donations to our Church and mark them “FBC CEB
Sanctuary arrangement order forms are also available in each
narthex. The cost of each arrangement is $35. The arrangement
may be taken home or delivered by a deacon to one of our
hospitalized or homebound members .
Volunteers for Our Homebound Members
Volunteers are needed to provide assistance to several
homebound church members who no longer drive or have
family close by to help. If you’re willing to help take the member
to the store, a medical appointment or run an errand for them,
please call the church office (662-5367). Your help would mean
so much to someone unable to accomplish simple tasks on their
own.
