Orient Cafe to roll
out new menu for
10-year anniversary
Enjoy dining this Summer with us
with ahealthy fresh stir-fry !!!
Since 2009
For almost a decade,
Orient Cafe has been serving
up classic Chinese
dishes at 14108 S. Bell
Road in Homer Glen.
Approaching her restaurant’s
10-year anniversary
this November, owner Sue
Chang was ready to shake
things up with a new menu.
“We have a lot of traditional
dishes, and they
are great, people love
them,” Chang said, “but
I would still like to target
the younger generation to
what they like.”
Targeting that crowd
means slightly downsizing
the menu — but keeping
the classics while adding
some new dishes.
Orient Cafe’s classic
dishes consist of old family
recipes, which have
been passed down three
generations in the business.
“It’s been nice to continue
the traditions,” said
Chang, who grew up in the
industry and lives in the
southwest suburbs.
Family recipes include
the cafe’s homemade,
crispy egg rolls, which
are the restaurant’s most
popular and well-known
item, thanks to their original
flavor.
“I’ve had people come
in from Chicago and Indiana
just for the egg rolls,”
Chang said. “Even people
who have moved away
come back to the restaurant
just for it.”
The egg fu young is also
not to be missed at the restaurant.
It is an omelette
dish with meat and gravy
and dates back to the early
1950s in Chang’s family.
Another menu mainstay
is the create-your-own
stir fry option, which allows
customers to choose
egg or rice noodles and
their meat, sauces, and
vegetables before it’s all
tossed and harmonizes in
the wok.
“A lot of restaurants
don’t have what we have,”
Chang said of the personalized
stir fry creation.
“We sell that the most because
people like to pick
their own meat and vegetables.”
These successful dishes,
plus an array of others,
will be on the upcoming
menu, which will be released
as soon as possible
this year, so make sure you
are checking for the announcement.
New dishes to grace
the upcoming list will be
“quick and easy,” Chang
said.
With the menu still under
development, Chang
mentioned a couple of
items that will be included,
such as chicken and monologian
beef on rice or
popular boba tea, a bubble
tea with milk and sugar.
The latter is already available
at Orient Cafe in eight
different delicious flavors.
With the menu update
comes a physical refresh
at the restaurant space
just north of 143rd Street
on Bell Road. Customers
can expect in the coming
months new “happy” wall
colors and interior decor
for a breath of fresh air.
While things are changing
at Orient Cafe soon,
Chang said customers can
still expect the same great
service and flavorful dishes
the restaurant has been
known for throughout the
past 10 years.
“We keep up the same
flavor in all the dishes,”
Chang said, adding that
her and her husband, Alex,
make all the sauces homemade
for consistency.
“My favorite part about
running this business is
meeting all of the people
who come here. They are
very nice. Thank you for
following us for three generations.”
Orient Cafe offers carryout,
delivery and catering.
First impressions matter, even for homes
Has your home lost its
curb appeal?
A neighbor across the
street has been trying to sell
her home for nearly three
years now. Inside it is beautiful;
granite countertops,
hardwood floors, multiple
fireplaces, updated bathrooms
with the latest fixtures
and the list goes on.
People who do the virtual
tour, or eventually see
the home’s interior, are
duly impressed, and yet no
reasonable offers. Why?
Even though she’s in the
real estate business, she
broke a cardinal rule: Just
like people, your home
makes a first impression,
and it’s the exterior that
does it. It happens when
others pull up a picture online,
or get a real time look
from one’s driveway.
In her case, maybe the
peeling paint on the siding,
or missing and curling
shingles have something
to do with it. Or perhaps
it’s the porch that looks
more like a deck. Not to
overlook the chimney that
needs rebuilding, the 90-
foot asphalt driveway with
a half dozen potholes, or
the missing overhead garage
door.
Let’s face it, improving
or maintaining the exterior
of your home is not a priority
for many of us. It’s
not “sexy”’ or very bragworthy
to mention the
‘’beautiful” new roof you
just got, especially when
your friends keep going
on and on about their new
bathrooms or kitchens.
The choices of different
exterior materials for the
middle-class homeowner
are much more limited
when compared to selections
for inside projects.
For many people, there’s
just not much fun in picking
out siding, and certainly
little exercising or
flexing of one’s creative
muscles.
And then there may be
a few other trials. I’m sure
you’ve heard horror stories
of the window salesman
who wouldn’t leave.
Or perhaps you were the
victim of one whose aftershave
or cologne lingered
in your kitchen for days.
Or you may have had the
experience of hearing these
words from the foreman,
“It’s no problem, I will fix.”
Taking care of the outside
of one’s home is more
a need or a necessity than
a want or desire. It’s very
utilitarian to make sure
your gutters drain properly,
the roof doesn’t leak or
your windows aren’t wasting
your heating dollars.
And yet, there is a certain
majesty in the simplicity
of an exterior project
well done. You can feel it
when you pull into your
driveway that first week or
two after its completion.
Whether it’s your pride as
a conscientious homeowner,
or just the relief of having
handled a long-standing
problem, it’s a good
feeling. And, if you’re new
to choosing a contractor
or completing a project
of this sort, don’t worry:
You’re in good hands.
At Lindholm Roofing,
it is our desire to give you
this feeling and to make
your exterior remodeling
or replacement project
go right. The project coordinators
who come out
to visit and assist you are
courteous and knowledgeable
professionals with an
average of nearly 20 years
experience in exterior
home improvement.
Our company has been
in business and owned
by the same family for
70 years. Because of this
longevity, our record of
craftsmanship and attention
to detail, as well as
our steadfast agreement to
companies and, most
importantly, tens of thousands
Let us be the one to help
with any of these projects
and we’ll be sure your
home makes a good first
impression.
Residents of Hanover
Place never have to go far
for fun.
Whether it’s taking a
stroll with the walking
club, celebrating on bingo
night, or engaging in stimulating
conversation in a
book club or a bible study,
participants have plenty of
options thanks to the robust
daily activity schedule
from Hanover, a premier
55 plus Active Adult
150 mixed one- and twobedroom
apartments for
those age 55 and up. Each
carpeted apartment is complete
with a full kitchen,
self-climate controls,
plenty of closet space and
more.
While peace and quiet in
your own quaint space is
honored by Hanover staff,
it is what happens outside
of the units that sets Hanover
Place apart.”
“We help seniors live
life with a purpose,” said
Bethany Mazzola, community
manager at Hanover
Place. “We try to
get people incorporated
in events, socializing and
staying active. … A lot of
residents like to interact
with each other.”
And there are plenty of
opportunities to do that.
Aside from the activities
previously mentioned, Hanover
Place residents can
also enjoy trivia nights,
a daily exercise club and
more. Residents are also
given the opportunity to
lead their own sessions.
Currently, there are drawing
classes, pinochle
groups and a crocheting
club led by community
members.
A variety of nonorganized
activity is also available,
as Hanover includes
a fitness center, a movie
theater, a beauty shop,
reading areas, a billiards
lounge and more.
Seasonal events also
grace Hanover’s schedule,
like the Salute A Veteran
Barbecue scheduled for
May 28 to celebrate Memorial
Day.
All that action will stir
up quite an appetite, so it’s
a good thing Hanover has
its own bistro on-site. The
Bistro serves breakfast
seven days a week, and
to mix things up, a catering
service provides dinner
three evenings a week.
At 16851 Harlem Ave.,
Hanover Place is conveniently
located near the
Metra station, and scheduled
bus and shuttle services
allow for simple
access to Tinley Park and
Shorewood Home and Auto comes to Homer Glen
This year will mark 45 years in business
for Shorewood Home and Auto.
The beginning of this year we purchased
Circle Tractor, a John Deere dealership
located in Homer Glen. With the addition
of Homer Glen we will have three locations
located in Will County, including
our original location in Shorewood and
our Crete location, which was acquired
in 2008. Three locations give our customers
a vast amount of inventory to choose
from.
A lot of companies say they give high
levels of customer service. Our high levels
of customer satisfaction are achieved
through utilizing more than 100 years of
power equipment experience. We offer
our customers one-on-one demonstrations
of their new equipment purchase to make
sure that they are comfortable when they
get their machine home, minimal wait
times for warranty repairs and to our commercial
customers loaner machines when
we cannot repair a machine within 24-48
hours. Here at Shorewood Home and Auto,
we strive to give every customer that walks
into our stores the highest level of customer
satisfaction no matter the situation.
We offer to our customers products
from leading manufacturers in the power
equipment industry. We carry the full line
of John Deere Turf and Utility products,
including riding tractors starting at $1,499
all the way up to 125HP luxurious utility
tractors. If a tractor is not your style, we
offer a full line of time saving John Deere
zero turn mowers. You can get around your
property in the comfort of a John Deere
Gator available with heat and air conditioned
cabs. On the construction end, we
offer the expanded line of commercial
compact equipment. We offer multiple sizes
of skid steers and compact track loaders,
zero-tail-swing mini-excavators and five
different sized compact wheel loaders. As
with everything we sell, we offer parts and
service at each location.
We carry leading hand held brands
Stihl and Echo. Both manufacturers offer
gas trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and
hedge trimmers with accessories for all.
If you don’t prefer dealing with gas powered
items, check out the latest in lithium
battery technology. Stihl and Echo offer
trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and mowers
all with industry leading run times.
For our commercial landscape customers,
we offer a full line of John Deere
commercial mowing equipment, full line
of Exmark equipment and the full line
from Wright Stander.
We offer parts for everything we sell
and even some items that we don’t sell.
Our service technicians are all factory
trained. We have service departments located
at each of our locations. Everything
we sell is backed by a highly trained parts
and service department. We separate ourselves
from other dealers and big box retailers
with our focus on service after the
sale. We want to see our customers coming
back year after year, whether it is the
do-it-yourselfer or you would like our service
department to keep your equipment
in tip top running condition.
We appreciate all of the business from
our past customers and look forward to
our new opportunities in Homer Glen.
Advanced learning with a family feel: St. Mary Catholic
School in Mokena offers early learning programs
Benefits of a learning community focused
on academics, faith and family
St. Mary School is a vibrant
and welcoming Catholic school,
serving students in preschool
through grade eight. Since 1949,
teachers have been providing
an extraordinary, personalized
learning environment allowing
each student to achieve his or
her full potential.
“We chose St. Mary’s for
its community, its extraordinary
faculty and staff, and its
exceptional learning environment,”
said Frank Murray, St.
Mary School Board Member
and new school parent. “It is the
faith-based, family community
that we believe is critical for
our children’s academic, social
and spiritual development. St.
Mary’s family is everything we
wanted in a school community.”
See the exceptional learning
environment
St. Mary’s offers 3-year-old
preschool through eighth grade.
Visitors are always impressed
with the school’s facilities,
which include a music room, library,
computer lab, science lab,
spacious gymnasium and the
STEAM — science, technology,
engineering, art and mathematics
— classroom.
The STEAM classroom allows
teachers to bring a unique
approach of teaching to enhance
student learning and understanding
of how all things relate
to each other, in school and in
life. Unlike other STEM programs,
St. Mary’s program also
emphasizes the integration of
the arts and offers more creativity
to students in the learning
process. The STEAM program
and open classroom setting allows
teachers to facilitate rather
than lecture, resulting in students
experiencing their education
as a process instead of a
final product.
St. Mary’s also offers a oneto-one
technology program that
provides each student in grades
six through eight with an individual
iPad, a class set of iPads
for grades three through five, and
kindergarten through grade two
have designated classroom iPads
and SmartBoards for educational
use. Primary students also benefit
from a certified reading specialist
and teacher aides.
Learn about numerous
extracurricular opportunities
and more
Students can enjoy many after-school
programs, including
band, chess, bell choir, youth
choir, drama club, STEM, yearbook,
scout groups, Student
Council, social events and an
extensive athletic program.
Before and after school care is
available for a fee from 6:45-
7:50 a.m. and 2:40-6 p.m. Bus
service is an option for those
families who reside in the Mokena
Public School District 159
for a fee.
Learn about tuition assistance
Recent legislation in Illinois
has opened up many opportunities
for families to receive
scholarships up to 100 percent
of tuition for Catholic education
in Illinois. Through Empower
Illinois, families can apply for
tuition assistance in the form of
grants from the Illinois government
to help pay for their child’s
Catholic education. Additionally,
St. Mary’s offers a special
Tuition Transfer Grant for up to
$1,500 per family — $1,000 in
year one, $500 in year two — for
students entering grades firstseventh
who transfer from any
private, public, charter or home
Jack Gibbons Gardens all about traditions, not trends
Jack Gibbons Gardens
does not follow trends.
Diners are not going
to witness Happy Hours
or Margarita Mondays at
Jack Gibbons.
That is because Jack
Gibbons focuses on what
really matters: great food
and even better company.
The restaurant reportedly
has customers who say
they have not been there
for 25-30 years but come
back and it is just the way
they remember it.
Jack Gibbons Gardens
— or Gibbons, as the
regulars call it — opened
in 1922 as a speakeasy.
Although times have
changed drastically since
then, the restaurant itself
has not. From the
red leather booths to
the wood-paneled walls,
Jack Gibbons is truly
timeless.
In a time where chain
restaurants are on every
corner, Gibbons has become
even more special
and unique. From the second
a diner sits and is instantly
delivered delicious
warm bread, three-bean
salad and coleslaw, before
even a glance at the menu,
it is easy to know one is
about to have one of the
best meals of his or her
life. From surf and turf to
fried chicken, Gibbons has
something to satisfy any
craving.
Gibbons has been described
as a “generational
place” that sees everyone
from grandfathers and fathers
to their grandchildren
who dine there.
A secret to that success
is that the restaurant’s staff
does not experience the
type of turnover seen in
some chain restaurants. Its
employees have worked
there for years, striving
for a “Cheers” vibe
with which the bartender
knows the customers,
what they’re having, and
the friends they bring with
them.
Are you ready for
some summer fun?
Lockport is ready. We
have many events planned
for this summer, so start
making your plans now to
enjoy all that Lockport has
to offer
First, the City of Lockport
will kick off summer
with its annual Old Canal
Days Festival to be held
June 13-16 in downtown
Lockport. This familyfriendly
event starts Thursday
when the carnival
comes to town. On Friday
evening, we will have a
parade followed by rockin’
entertainment in the
main tent. Saturday and
Sunday will offer a huge
craft show with more than
100 vendors, live bands in
the beer/wine tent, food
trucks, bingo, car show,
magic show, petting zoo,
Lock 1 tours, new trolley
tours, cemetery tours,
history exhibits, antique
appraisals and vendors,
worship service, bean bag
tournament, craft beer tasting,
and much more. For
more information on the
activities and entertainment
offered at the 2019
Old Canal Days event, go
to oldcanaldays.com.
In addition to Old Canal
Days, the city will offer a
variety of events in downtown
Lockport, including
our Cruisin’ Into Lockport
Classic Car Show on Monday
evenings, and Friday
Nights with Abe at the Lincoln
Landing. Both events
offer live entertainment,
as well as drinks and food
available for purchase.
Furthermore, be sure
to save the date for the
fifth Annual Comicopolis
Comic and Fandom Con
event from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
July 27, where the first 500
attendees will receive free
swag bags. For more information
and to see pictures
of the Batmobile and
the DeLorean that will be
there, go to comicopolis.
org.
If you’re a film buff, the
Summer Art Series Committee
is introducing its
first ever Midwest Waterways
Short Film Festival.
Come enjoy this summerlong
event in the Roxy
Theater, a newly restored
art deco venue in the heart
of Lockport, Illinois’ historic
downtown.
Films will cover five
genres on the following
dates:
• July 11 – Drama
• July 25 – Comedy
• Aug. 8 – Horror
• Aug. 22 – Documentary
• Sept. 12 – Sci-fi or
Animated
• Oct. 5 – Best of Fest
Aside from the events
mentioned above, the Summer
Art Series Committee
has partnered with other
organizations to offer programs
and art experiences
throughout the summer.
For instance, the Illinois
State Museum’s Rocked &
Rolled exhibit ingeniously
pairs rock stars with moon
rocks and meteorites. It’s
a one-of-a-kind exhibit
that you must experience
this summer, which runs
from May 1-Oct. 6.
Also, you can have
fun this summer seeking
out the giant picture
frames strategically placed
throughout the downtown.
Once you find them, take
a selfie or a group picture
in these frames to be a part
of the Picture Perfect challenge.
Your best photo can
win a $25 gift card to one
of the restaurants in town.
newest smoke BBQ house
Just Wings BBQ &
Wings is a true old-fashioned
smokehouse. Traditional
smoked items
— such as beef brisket,
pulled pork, chicken, and
back ribs — are available
daily. Smoked party
wings, hot links, boneless
wings and nachos are also
some popular menu items.
They do smoked BBQ
right. By smoking their
brisket and pork for a
minimum of 14 hours, JW
BBQ & Wings achieves
a very tender and juicy
product. While their ribs
and chicken on the other
hand are smoked as well,
they are only cooked for
about 4-6 hours. Perfecting
these smoke times
becomes crucial in preparing
and creating a
delicious and enjoyable
product that is both moist
and flavorful. In addition,
by using pecan, apple and
cherry wood, their meat
achieves sweetness like
no other, leaving the customer
wanting more.
“You will not taste a
harsh, smoked flavor in
any of our products like
you usually would in most
other smokehouses. Our
way of smoking allows
you to savor the wood flavor,
spices and meat without
leaving you with a potent
smoked flavor,” said
pitmaster and cofounder
John Mihalos.
Although menu items
are typically served a la
carte, there are many different
side options for
those interested. Fresh
cut fries, corn on the cob,
roasted veggies, baked
beans, smoked cabbage,
and baked mac and cheese
are served daily. JW BBQ
& Wings’ baked beans
are cooked together with
bacon and beef brisket,
which creates a sweet
and pleasant taste. The
smoked cabbage is topped
with light balsamic vinaigrette
that customers
seem to really enjoy.
Looking to try a little
bit of everything? No
problem. For $19.99,
JW BBQ & Wings offers
a sampler plate for two
that includes: beef brisket,
pulled pork, ¼ dark
chicken, ¼ slab ribs and
two sides.
Sandwiches are also
available, as well as catering
options for holidays
and/ or events.
Schaaf celebrates 60 years in Chicagoland
Sixty years, seven locations,
hundreds of different products,
thousands of cherished customers
and one owner, Schaaf Window
has had a long and storied
history in this area. The familyowned
business celebrates its
60th anniversary this June, a
testament to its success and long
history of having the best customer
service in town.
Schaaf Window was founded
in 1959 as Schaaf Glass Company
by George Schaaf Sr. and
his father, Fred. They began the
company by re-glazing windows
out of three garages behind his
father’s home in Englewood and
ran the business out of his home.
About a year into their business,
they were big enough
to move into a real office and
warehouse, so they made a deal
with a local car dealer to use his
building while he used the parking
lot. At this time, they added
glass storefronts to their product
offerings.
Just two years later, they had
already grown out of the building
and George decided that this
time he would build his own,
against his father’s advice. He
built a brand new building in
Evergreen Park and even outgrew
that one so fast that he
was forced to convince the lady
next door to sell him her house
in order to construct another
new building. In these years, the
company began offering patio
doors and framed mirrors.
Even with the addition, the
company grew too large, and
George again had to build a new
location, this time in Bridgeview.
They moved into this building
in 1972 and immediately began
expanding their product lines. In
1974 the business really took off
when Schaaf began assembling
their own windows. The success
of the window business led to
the separation of the glass and
the window departments, and the
official incorporation of Schaaf
Window Company.
In 1980, George turned an old
stadium in Bridgeview into offices
and a shop. He had helped
build the stadium when it was
going to be used for a local
semi-pro baseball team, but he
was never paid by the builder.
He bought the land and decided
to turn it in to a new location
for Schaaf Glass; however,
five years later Schaaf Window
moved into this location and
Schaaf Glass moved back to its
old building. Again, the company
grew so that additions had to
be made and eventually an entire
adjacent building was constructed
to add capacity. While at this
location, Schaaf Window added
millwork and interior doors to its
product lines.
In 2003 Schaaf Window
moved to its current location in
Tinley Park. It has since become
the largest independent window
company in Illinois, and added
shower doors and installation to
its mix of products. It is also now
co-owned by two of George’s
children, Bob and Barb, along
with George himself. Today,
Schaaf continues its commitment
to superior customer service
and offering high quality
products.
As summer rolls around and
you start your home improvement
projects, keep Schaaf in
mind and see what 60 years in
the industry can do for you.
and spend time relaxing
New Lenox-based
business works to make
clothes dryers safer
Hidden buildup in clothes
dryer vent is a fire hazard
DON’T LET YOUR DRYER
START A
FIRE!
Most people know they need to clean
out their dryer lint tray between each
cycle, but what lurks behind the wall is
just as important for safety and avoiding
fire traps, as well as fully efficient dryer
performance. Joe Enzenberger, owner
of Dryer Vent Wizard, opened his New
Lenox-based business in 2009.
Lint is the villain; lint that has been allowed
to build up and linger too long in
the dryer exhaust vent.
It is estimated by the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission and the U.S.
Fire Administration that 15,500 fires associated
with clothes dryers occur annually.
These fires account for an average of
20 deaths, 370 injuries and more than $88
million in property damage.
“Failure to clean the dryer vent” was
the leading factor cited in U.S. Fire Administration
reports.
“It is something very few people know
about or think about,” said Enzenberger,
whose company specializes in dryer vent
cleaning, repair, alteration and installation.
“It is the leading cause of dryer
fires.”
Lint accumulation also can cause dryers
to stop working or to work inefficiently.
A dryer vent clogged with lint can add
as much as $18-$24 per month to energy
costs.
“Improper venting causes problems,
as well,” Enzenberger said. “The dryer
exhaust duct and connections should be
made of rigid metal or semi-rigid metal
and secured with metal heat-resistant tape
rather than duct tape. I often find plastic
or foil accordion-type material, which can
easily trap lint and is more susceptible to
kinks and crushing.”
Warning signs include
• Clothes are taking more than one cycle
to dry, especially jeans and towels.
• No lint visible on lint screen.
• Dryer repeatedly stops during a cycle.
• Clothes have moldy smell after dry cycle.
• Clothes are very hot after a dry cycle.
• The top of your dryer hot to the touch
while running.
• There’s excess lint left on your clothing.
“This has been a consumer education
process, but it’s hard to get the word out,”
Enzenberger said. “Most don’t call until
they have a serious problem with their
dryer.”
He suggests people treat clothes dryers
as a household item in need of regular
maintenance. Consumers can protect
dryer performance and promote safety
by cleaning the lint screen between each
use, ensuring the connection between the
dryer and wall is made of compliant material
and remains un-kinked, and having
the dryer exhaust duct cleaned regularly.
Dryer manufacturers recommend inspection
and cleaning at least annually.
Summer is a great time to have an inspection
and cleaning of clothes dryers
and dryer vent systems.
Another important tip: Never let your
clothes dryer run when you are out of the
house or asleep.
Almost everyone looks
forward to summer, and
it’s no surprise why: Perpetually
sunny skies, gentle
breezes and blooming
florae are enough to put
even the most devout curmudgeon
in a good mood.
But here in Tinley Park,
the allure of summertime
extends well beyond mere
seasonal pleasantries to
include the diverse offering
of sensational events
occurring downtown every
week. Residents and
visitors alike make events
— such as, the Music in
the Plaza concerts, the
tropical-themed Tinley
weekly Cruise Nights and
the Benches on the Avenue
Life Purpose Chiropractic and Dr. Rick are making Lockport home
Life Purpose Chiropractic
was started for the sole purpose
of helping people achieve better
health through the Gonstead
system of chiropractic care, offering
affordable and timely care
for prevention and correction of
heath issues.
I am Dr. Rick Brescia. I have
been in practice for 11 years,
and Lockport is now home for
me and my two children. I had
a practice in Frankfort for seven
years, and sold it in 2015 to be a
professor at Sherman College of
Chiropractic in South Carolina. I
was there for three years teaching
full time and practicing. I
moved back to Lockport in June
of 2018 to be closer to family,
and I now opened Life Purpose
Chiropractic here in Lockport.
The way I practice is unique
for this area. One way it is
unique is that I practice the Gonstead
System of Chiropractic in
its entirety. This system is very
specific with the way the adjustments
are performed, the way the
x-rays are taken and analyzed,
and skin temperature measurements
are taken on every visit.
The adjustments are done using
custom tables for the Gonstead
system, as well, and I am certified
to teach this system all over
the world.
Another reason the office is
unique is that I only perform adjustments
in the office. People
are seen in a timely fashion,
not having to be in the office
for hours at a time doing other
things. This allows you more
time with your family, and I
value your time with your family
and friends. I have convenient
morning and afternoon hours
to accommodate your travel for
work or school.
One more way the office is
unique, is that the care is affordable
for everyone, even whole
families. Children should be
checked and adjusted if needed,
just like adults. My children have
been adjusted since birth just for
prevention of health issues. As a
result, they are rarely sick with
many of the things I see other
children with, like ear infections,
colic, asthma, feeding issues,
chronic bronchitis, or spectrum
issues. Whether you have health
insurance or not doesn’t play a
factor in the cost of your care in
this office. There are many different
options for you to get the
care you need for yourself and
your family without having to
break the bank
I pride myself on being direct
and to the point. My goal is simply
to help as many people as I
can live the best life possible
naturally. I am here to help you
and your family be as healthy as
possible and to live the best life
possible.
At Life Purpose Chiropractic,
“Your health and life are
our purpose.” The office is
located at 1110 E. 9th St. in
Lockport. You can contact me
at (773) 842-9092, or by email
at dr.rickbrescia@gmail.com. I
look forward to meeting you and
helping you.
Children learn positive, fun skills at Kids Can Do
Kids Can Do, Inc is a children’s
therapy center in Mokena.
Within the past year, it has celebrated
its 30th anniversary, as
well as a transition to new ownership.
The new owners of Kids
Can Do are Erica Kluck, Marijo
Kleinfelder, Angie Andrus and
Marcy Munger, all of whom
have been working as full-time
therapists at Kids Can Do for a
combined total of more than 70
years.
Kids Can Do offers physical
therapy, occupational therapy
and speech therapy for infants,
children and young adults. It
provides individual therapy, as
well as various groups, camps
and special classes throughout
the year.
Pediatric physical therapy
helps children improve motor development
and function, strength
and endurance, posture, balance,
independence, and participation,
as well as help families ease challenges
with daily care giving.
Pediatric occupational therapists
help children gain the skills they
need for independence in play,
learning, motor skill development,
self-care, and socialization
in their home, school, and community
environments. Speech
therapy helps children improve
verbal and nonverbal communication
skills. Speech therapy
may focus on speech production,
understanding and expressing
language, social skills, executive
function deficits, and feeding or
swallowing.
Kids Can Do is also known for
providing excellent feeding therapy.
Feeding therapy can be done
in individual sessions, as well as
in a group setting. Exploring new
foods with peers is a great way to
expand the variety of foods in the
diet of a picky eater.
Kids Can Do’s mission is to
enrich the lives of children and
their families through an interdisciplinary
approach that blends
the art and science of therapy.
Families who come to Kids Can
Do will find a beautiful facility
with a staff of 20 highly-trained
therapists who are dedicated to
doing the most they can to help
children overcome both big and
small obstacles. Kids Can Do
strives to be a place where all
children can have fun and feel
supported. The goal is for children
to make progress and succeed
in life while feeling like
they come to Kids Can Do to
play and have fun with friends.
One parent, Tracy Vidovic,
put it this way: “The staff at
Kids Can Do treat your child like
their own. They go above and
beyond to make sure every success
is celebrated, every concern
is addressed and every family is
involved in their child’s journey.
They have become family to us
and I can’t imagine taking my
child anywhere else. I asked Mason
if he would tell other kids to
go to Kids Can Do and he said,
‘Yes.’ When I asked him why, he
said, ‘Because they’re my best
friends.’”
Are you looking for a specialized
group to help your child develop
skills this summer? Kids
Can Do offers a variety of summer
camps for a wide range of
ages and interests. Children do
not need to be a current client of
Kids Can Do, and siblings and
friends can also enroll in camps.
The 2019 summer programs start
the week of June 10. One of the
most popular programs is Ninja
Warriors Camp. Children who
attend have a lot of fun with
friends building strength and
coordination while tackling challenging
obstacle courses.
If you think your child may
benefit from therapy, Kids Can
Do offers free screenings to
assess the need for a full therapy
evaluation. Visit kidscan
More than
shrimp at Just
Shrimp
When Just Shrimp opened its doors in
late 2014, few people in the Tinley Park
area knew of or had ever tried a lobster
roll or fried lobster. With that being said,
one would say that Just Shrimp’s menu
goes beyond “just shrimp.”
“Our menu has expanded quite a bit
since we first opened,” said Christina
Mihalos. “Due to such positive feedback,
items that were featured as specials
— such as the gator, lobster, and
tilapia — were later added to our menu
permanently. As time went on, we saw
that customers were looking for healthier
alternatives, as well, so we added a
few other options to fulfil their wants.”
Menu items that satisfy customers
looking for a non-fried option include a
grilled shrimp skewer and fresh broiled
salmon. Both items are served with
mixed vegetables and a baked potato, as
opposed to the traditional sides of fries
and coleslaw.
Just Shrimp’s menu includes jumbo
wild caught shrimp, different fish dinners,
such as fish n chips, lake perch,
catfish, tilapia, and a variety of fish
sandwiches and po’ boys. It has an array
of different sides, as well as its daily
lobster bisque soup.
It has been just about four years since
Mihalos convinced her family to turn
their Chicken Wild restaurant around to
what is now: Just Shrimp.
“By experimenting a little first, we
added different fried shrimp and fish
items to our previous restaurant. Due to
the high demand, I was able to see that
this concept might just work since there
was nothing like us nearby,” Mihalos
said. “It was then, together with my dad,
that we decided to switch the whole concept
to Just Shrimp.”
Mihalos is a fourth-generation restaurateur,
and growing up and around
the restaurant industry has helped her
greatly along the way.
“Although there are many challenges
I face being a young female restaurateur,
having my dad by my side along the
way does help tremendously,” she said.
There’s also a serious
side to summer reading.
Research has shown that
reading over the summer
prevents summer reading
loss.
“Studies also indicate
students who read recreationally
outperformed
those who don’t,” said Assistant
Director Luke Surdel.
“Students read more
when they can choose materials
based on their own
interests. Our libraries are
committed to supporting
lifelong learning and educational
enrichment for all
families.”
Registration continues
throughout the Summer
Dear friend,
“I know you.” That’s what people usually say when
they meet me in town. Then they say, “You’re Dr.
Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and
those two cute little kids.” Well, perhaps I should tell
you a little more about that photo, and why I use it
in my ads. Let’s start with me, the guy in the middle.
23 years ago, something happened to me that
changed my life forever. Let me tell you my story.
I am back in high school training for football in
the weight room. I was doing squats and had some
weight on there. I went to finish my set and rack the
weight, and I missed the rack on one side. My spotter
stepped back already, and the weight fell on me as I
went to step out from under it. I felt something in
my low back “pop” and instantly fell to the ground.
Both my legs and feet were tingling, and by low back
was killing me. I was terrified, both legs tingling, my
low back locked up, and I was crawling on the floor
of the weight room because I could not stand up.
But, then…
My mother suggested I go see this doctor she
recently met. This new doctor does an exam, takes
some x-rays, and then gently “adjusts” my spine. The
adjustment feels great… the tingling in my legs stops,
and I can move my low back again! I feel like it’s a
miracle! Oh, did I mention that this doctor was a
chiropractor? Chiropractic care worked so good for
me, that I decided to go to chiropractic school myself!
That’s how it all started!
The biggest reason I use this picture is to show off
my 2 amazing kids, Cole and Cadence. I have been
gently adjusting both of their spines since they were
born. Cole was born with breathing issues and
didn’t want to latch or eat. His head was leaning
off to one side after the birth process. Once he got
adjusted after they were done running all their tests
and x-rays of his chest, he started to latch and feed,
and his breathing improved! They both love to get
checked weekly, and will sometimes fight to see
who goes first. Oh, and they hardly ever get sick!
Regular wellness care helps keep their bodies “tuned
up” and functioning well. While under chiropractic
care, many kids heal themselves from health issues
like colic, ear infections, bed wetting, asthma, colds,
and allergies, naturally without the use of drugs or
surgeries.
It’s strange how life is, because now people come to
see me with their back and leg problems. But they
also they come to me with their headaches, migraines,
chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, backaches,
menstrual problems, fibromyalgia, low immune function,
“Why Do I Use this Photo in My Ads?”
And what you should know about it…
numbness in their hands and feet, acid reflux, blood
pressure issues, constipation, and digestive issues just to
name a few.
Here’s what some of my patients had to say:
“I can breathe better and never thought I would be
able to ski again after having my lung removed from
cancer, Dr. Rick got me back to breathing better than
I have in years!” - (Bonnie S.)
“I have no more digestive issues and vomiting after
eating!” - (Sarah L.)
“My son doesn’t get sick on car rides anymore and
can ride the bus without being embarrassed about
throwing up!” - (Jill T.)
You should know that I don’t heal anyone of anything.
What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment
to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds
by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as
simple as that!
Chiropractic is probably the most misunderstood
healthcare profession there is. Its about working with,
and enhancing the body’s natural healing abilities.
Chiropractors find and remove obstruction to the
nervous system, which allows the body to respond
better. As misunderstood as it is, the studies speak for
themselves, like the Virginia study that should that
over 95% of patients who saw a chiropractor were
satisfied with their results. That is just incredible!
Millions of Americans no longer have health
insurance, and those who do have found that their
benefits are shrinking, and their deductibles are
rising. That’s where chiropractic comes in. Overall
the patients seeing chiropractors had 60% less
hospitalizations, 62% less outpatient surgeries, and
85% less costs for prescription drugs.
Special Offer- Look, I know you are smart! You
want to get to the cause of your problem, not just
cover it up with drugs. So, when you are one of the
first 20 people to call and schedule a new patient
exam (by June7) you will receive that entire exam for
$50 (Normally a $265.00 value). That’s with full spine
x-rays, exam… the whole ball of wax, and there are
no hidden fees. But call right now because there are
only 20 of these slots. We will be available to take
calls starting today. Please don’t miss out, because
on Friday June 7th at 6 p.m., this offer will expire!!
Although we do see Medicare patients, by law, this
offer excludes Medicare/Medicaid patients.
Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about
quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee.
You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualification…I
have been a licensed chiropractor for 11 years, I
have taught chiropractic at a chiropractic college
for 3 years, I have performed over two hundred
thousand gentile chiropractic adjustments, and I have
a diplomate in the Gonstead system of chiropractic.
I have been entrusted to care for everyone from tiny
newborn babies to senior citizens, and I have literally
helped hundreds of people with dozens of different
health issues.
