President’s Message

Mike Gordon

The nice thing about this time of year is we finish one holiday, and it’s time for another.

The joys of Hanukkah are in our rearview mirror, and it’s time to start preparing Purim.

The Temple is getting ready. We’ll keep you informed.

If you haven’t participated in the adult education activities, your missing out on the fun,

learning, and fellowship. Take a look at the website and calendar.

Finally, Maryland seems to be in better shape with the Covid vaccine shots than many

of our neighbors. The phases are moving quickly, so jump on it when it’s your turn.

Keep on washing your hands, wearing your mask, and maintaining proper distancing.

L’shalom

Michael Gordon

Religious Practices Message

Melissa Immel & Mark Wolkow

Dear Friends,

As a Jewish community, we have continued to be hopeful by gathering

together (albeit remotely) for prayer, learning, socializing, and even

celebrating new babies and B’nai Mitzvahs. We have comforted each

other at Zoom funerals and shiva minyans—experiences we could never

have imagined a year ago. The Religious Practices Committee strives to

make our traditions relevant and meaningful, especially during these

unprecedented times. Our customs and mitzvot are the foundations that

sustain us as a community. Please join us on Shabbat evenings for

Services and Shabbat mornings for ‘Taking Hold of Torah’ study sessions

or ‘Mindfulness In Meditation.’ See the Temple Calendar for dates and

times.

We are excited to report that our TAS Choir is hard at work preparing

for a very special ‘Pandemic Purim’ Schpiel. You won’t want to miss it!

Purim is a joyous holiday that affirms and celebrates Jewish survival and

continuity throughout history. We can’t think of a better message as we

approach the first anniversary of streaming services. Purim involves a

public reading of the Megillah, which tells the story of how Queen

Esther and her cousin Mordechai ultimately saved the Jews of Persia

from destruction. The Megillah reading is typically a rowdy affair,

punctuated by booing and noise-making when Haman’s name is read

aloud. We eat hamantaschen, give money to the poor, and give gifts of

treats (like the Sisterhood gift bag available to all of our congregants) to

friends and neighbors.

You won’t want to miss this year’s dramatic interpretation of the Book of

Esther on Friday, February 26th at 7:00 pm. Great for all ages! Then, tune

in again on Sunday the 28th at 10:00 am for a virtual Megillah reading,

followed by a reprise of the Choir’s Purim Schpiel.

B’Shalom,

Mark Wolkow & Melissa Immel

Sisterhood News

Pat Wolkow

This month we celebrate Purim. Our Temple Adas Shalom Sisterhood wishes you and

your family Chag Purim Sameach. Happy Purim!

To fulfill the mitzvah of “Mishloach Manot” (giving a gift to friends and neighbors), our

Sisterhood offers a gift package of sweets to all of our members. A previous email was

sent to you that included details on picking up your package and how you can

participate in this mitzvah.

Our Sisterhood would like to welcome its newest member: Emily Harrison. We all look

forward to meeting Emily, her husband Micah, and her two sons, David and Henry.

This month we would have met at the Social Hall on a Saturday evening for one of our

fun events: Chick Flick Night. It is an annual event where we order Chinese food for

dinner, catch up with our sisters, and relax in our PJs, watching a Jewish movie and

eating popcorn. Due to Covid, it has been canceled, but we will hope to see you next

year!

COMING UP IN FEBRUARY:

February 18th is our next virtual Sisterhood General Membership meeting. We will be

brainstorming ideas in breakout rooms for our upcoming events and any new events we

would like to add to next year’s calendar. We welcome your thoughts.

MARCH: Slate of officers for 2021-2022 to be presented.

The Book of Esther - by Janet Ruth Falon

It’s only the book of the Bible

With no mention of God’s name.

That’s because we see it on faces delighted to be in shul;

and we smell it in the sweetness of early spring;

and we taste it in the buttery yellow dough of hamantashen,and the intensity of lekvar, or mun;

and we feel it in that moment, we discover a shalach manot at our doorstep;

and we hear it in the stomps and shouts and whistles and gragers and in between, every word of the story.

All our senses are engaged which is another way of being with God even without a name.

Adult Education News

Stephen Marksamer

Think of the tune of Glass Onion – The Beatles

I told you ’bout Jiffy Hebrew.

You know the place where learning is cool.

Well, here’s another place you can go

Where everything flows

Looking through the good book Tanakh

To see how the Wicked Women live.

Looking through a Rabbi’s eyes

I told you about the “Book of Lost Names,” man.

You know we’re here because of our heroes, man.

Well, here’s another clue for you to see

The book was Epitres et Evangiles

Standing on the shoulders of you, yeah.

“Lunch & Learn” will be a monthly treat, yeah.

Looking through a Rabbi’s eyes

Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

Looking through our Rabbi’s eyes

Stay healthy and stay safe for 2021.
