Capernwray:
loving the old and the new!
“Enjoy discovering
our great selection
of holidays for
2014. We look
forward to
welcoming you to
Capernwray!”
Dougie Roy
Programme Director
If you have never visited before we hope 2014 sees you
arrive to enjoy a break. For those who return we continue
to promise fun, variety and great Bible teaching. We offer
holidays that are specifically designed and very much
enjoyed by all ages. We love our location and we love our
facilities - and we love that we can share them with you!
the old and new buildings
From the 19th century manor house to the 21st century Dining
and Conference Halls we have beautiful buildings that are
warm and welcoming.
the old and new facilities
There are always new activities and facilities at Capernwray
and there are some old favourites that truly stand the test of
time - we think you’ll love them all. Our Zip Wires were a big
hit last summer. Look out for the arrival of Ga Ga Ball in 2014.
the old and new promises
Most of all, we love the old and new promises from God.
The Old Testament, the New Testament - quite different, very
accurate, incredibly interwoven. They are a compelling read
and hold a life changing message of our creator God, His
obedient Son and the helpful Holy Spirit. At the core of each
holiday is time spent enjoying Bible teaching, discussion and
reflection.
“Capernwray: Old & New - great holidays for You!”
What is
Capernwray?
We asked Mark Thomas to explain
For more information visit:
www.capernwray.org.uk
www.capernwrayholidays.org.uk
www.torchbearers.org
The Marton Family - the landowners who built the Hall
The First German Group
Major & Mrs Thomas with Staff 1948
I
came to Capernwray before I was born, with my
mother who is fondly known as ‘Mrs T’. I grew
up to see the change in a place and a change in
people and have been privileged to be director
here for the last 32 years.
Built by a respected gentry family and established as
their home in the 19th century, Capernwray Hall was
auctioned in 1946 into the hands of my parents -
a couple who had the sole desire of seeing young
people come to know the God who created them
through experiencing the risen life of the Lord Jesus
Christ. It became God’s place! That purpose has not
changed, for the torch lit then through Major Ian and
Mrs Joan Thomas has been carried around the globe.
A group of 30 German young people who came
to Capernwray in 1948, sponsored by the British
government, was the spark that led to Torchbearers
International, for they returned home to the Continent
sharing the light of Christ. Jesus stepped out of the
pages of the Scripture, became personal to so many
from Britain and Europe and soon the hunger for
such biblical teaching led to the global network of
Capernwray Bible Schools.
Without doubt the Lord is in this place. So your visit
in 2014 will be filled with fun and smiling faces, with
fellowship and you will see great places. It will be a
holiday with a difference. Enjoy the facilities while
you discover that Christ who still steps out of God’s
Word will be our focus. He will teach you, challenge
you and promise to be what you need and the
enabler for what you should be.
Come now and you will be back!
6

Mark Thomas
Mark’s parents, Major Ian and Mrs Joan
Thomas, bought Capernwray Hall in
1946. He is now the Managing Director
of Capernwray Hall and assistant to the
Director of Torchbearers International.
“Without doubt
the Lord is in
this place”
Bible ministries) is coming to take our Bible
teaching sessions with a new approach
that Walk Through and the Scottish Bible
Society have been preparing for the past
two years. Imagine the refreshment that
can come when well known Bible passages
really come to life in our minds. Think of
the passages we are not familiar with that
we discover are bursting with personal
application and encouragement for
ourselves. Discover an easy way to share
Come, meet, learn, connect and relax with other
18-25 year olds.
IMPACT:2014 is... a great mix: Leisure. Worship.
Active. Relaxed. Creative. Enjoyable. Worthwhile.
IMPACT:2014 is... a week to grow. It’s a week for you.
As an 18-25 year old: does the world impact you - or
do you impact the world? What are the priorities for a
young adult Christian in 2014? Through the powerful
Bible teaching, personal and corporate worship
times, discussion and practical help you will get
some clear answers to those questions. Jesus told
His young followers to rejoice in their relationship
with God, engage with those around and beware
of the sin of unbelief. Nothing’s Changed. Say,
“Goodbye summer, hello September!” with Great
Worship. Relevant Seminars. Supportive Team.
Beautiful Location.
Speakers
WITH
jim graham
Jim Graham has been pastoring for over 50 years! Originally from Scotland,
Jim has been associated with Gold Hill Baptist Church, Buckinghamshire
since 1968. He now lives with the title of Pastor Emeritus of Gold Hill Baptist
Churches.
He was the President of British Youth for Christ during the 1990’s as well as
being a regular Bible teacher at our Bible School here at Capernwray Hall,
Keswick Conventions, Spring Harvest and other national and international
conferences. Jim is often in South Korea and other Asian countries.
At Capernwray we know that Jim’s wisdom, gleaned though his study of
Scriptures and through the experiences of many years in ministry, make his
Bible teaching alive, his points wise, and his conclusions practical.
The Greatest Need of the Church Today – Making Disciples
“Jesus did not call us to build His Church (that is His responsibility!) but
He did call us to make disciples. We don’t have a missional or a leadership
problem in the Western Church – we have a discipleship problem. When
you know how to disciple people properly you always get mission and
you will always produce leaders. We have often made converts without
making disciples fully trained and equipped in all that Jesus taught and
demonstrated. Let’s take time to look at Discipleship together!”
WITH
rob whittaker
The Principal of Capernwray Bible
School is a great communicator
and loves moving our students on
in the outliving of their faith and in
understanding the underpinning truths
of their faith. Rob’s topic of ‘Focusing
on Jesus’ keeps our attention on the
One who deserves our attention!
WITH
sue gilmore
As Registrar and resident lecturer at Capernwray
Bible School, Sue has been on staff since 1987.
Many students would testify how significant
she has been in guiding them towards their
Heavenly Father during their time here. Known
and loved for her humour and insight Sue will
take us through Bible passages that can refresh,
guide and challenge us in our lives.
If in doubt,
read the
manual
A radical approach for getting the most out of life!
(reading time approx. 1 minute 30 seconds)
Some scenes you never forget. This was
way back in the 80’s and my friend was
excitedly unpacking his first computer. As
I recall, it came in three large cardboard
boxes and, eventually, he figured out
how the screen, adaptors, keyboard and mouse
linked to the beige central
processor. This was long before
the arrival of full colour, HD,
Dolby 5:2 set ups, and so, as he
gazed expectantly at the green
writing on a black background,
he looked like the captain of a
submarine trying to make sense
of the sonic bleeps on a radar
screen.
I think it took all of five minutes
for him to lose patience with
the whole set up. I stepped back, visualising
screen, keyboard, mouse and CPU becoming
airborne any second as he slung them through
the nearest window. It was around that time that
we saw two huge books encased in cellophane;
this was in the days when instruction manuals
were not downloadable PDF documents, but
“We are often so
busy or so tired
or so discouraged
that we just don’t
get round to
reading
the Good Book”
actual books! Although challenging reading, they
rescued the computer from an early grave and
my friend from a nervous breakdown.
I wonder how many of us have actually read
and understood the Maker’s Manual, not for a
computer but for our lives? We
are often so busy or so tired
or so discouraged that we just
don’t get round to reading the
Good Book. At Bible school,
you can invest 2 or 6 or 9
months as you give God space
to help you figure out you. More
importantly, you can allow Him
to refocus your view of Jesus
and rekindle your passion for
His call on your life. So many
of our students say that their
time at Capernwray Bible School was the single
best thing they ever did. If you are not sure that
Bible School is for you, why not come along to
Summer Studies and get a taste of what you
could be in for!
