Edward Jones helps customers reach financial goals
As people work toward
achieving your goals in life, they
will need to make moves that
contain financial, tax and legal
elements, so they may want to
get some help – from more than
one source.
Specifically, people might
want to put together a team comprised
of their financial advisor,
CPA, or other tax professional,
and attorney. Together, this team
can help those with all types of
financial/tax/legal connections.
For starters, people may decide,
possibly upon the recommendation
of their financial advisor,
to sell some investments
and use the proceeds to buy others
that may now be more appropriate
for your needs. If someone
sells some investments he or she
has held for a year or less and realize
a capital gain on the sale,
the gain generally will be considered
short-term and be taxed at
the customer’s ordinary income
tax rate. But if the person held
the investments for more than a
year before selling, the gain will
likely be considered long-term
and taxed at the lower, long-term
capital gains rate, which can be
0 percent, 15 percent or 20 percent,
or a combination of those
rates.
On the other hand, if one sells
an investment and realize a capital
loss, the customer may be
able to apply the loss to offset
gains realized by selling other,
more profitable investments and
also potentially offset some of
his or her ordinary income. So,
as one can see, the questions
potentially raised by investment
sales: “Should I sell?” “If so,
when?” “If I take some losses,
how much will they benefit me at
tax time?” They may also be of
importance to a tax advisor, who
will need to account for sales in
the customer’s overall tax picture.
As such, it’s a good idea for
one’s tax and financial advisors
to communicate about any investment
sales the person makes.
One’s tax and financial advisors
also may want to be in
touch on other issues, such as
the person’s contributions to a
retirement plan. For example, if
self-employed or own a small
business, and contribute to a
SEP-IRA – which is funded with
pre-tax dollars, so the more contributions,
the lower the taxable
income is – the financial advisor
can report to the customer’s tax
advisor (with permission) how
much the customer has contributed
at given points in a year,
and then tax advisor can then
advise how much more it might
need to add to move into a lower
tax bracket, or at least avoid being
bumped up to a higher one.
The financial advisor will be the
one to recommend the investments
used to fund a SEP-IRA.
The financial advisor can also
help choose the investment or
insurance vehicles that can fund
an estate-planning arrangement,
such as an irrevocable living
trust. But to establish that trust
in the first place, and to make
sure it conforms to all applicable
laws, the customer will want to
work with an attorney experienced
in planning estates. A tax
professional may also need to be
brought in. Again, communication
between the various advisors
is essential.
These are but a few of the instances
in which financial, tax
and legal professionals should
talk to each other. So, people
need to do what they can to open
these lines of communication –
because the customer will be one
who ultimately benefits from this
teamwork.
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Fox’s
St. Patrick’s is more like
a month than a day at Fox’s
Restaurants and Pubs.
The classic Irish taverns
celebrate their heritage in
style, with entertainment
and specials lined up at
the Orland Park (9655 W.
143rd St.) and Mokena
(11247 W. 187th St.) locations
all March until the big
day:
Sunday, March 17.
Guests can expect bagpipers
from the Shannon
Rovers Irish Pipe band,
dancers from the Mulhern
School of Irish Dance, balloon
artists and much more
leading up to St. Paddy’s
Day, when there will be a
full day of old-country fun.
Of course, what’s St.
Paddy’s without traditional
food from the Emerald Isle?
Fox’s will have plenty,
with a special menu full of
classics, like corned beef
and cabbage and shepherd’s
pie, as well as beer
that is tinted green.
Fox’s cherishes its
south-side Irish roots.
Thomas and Therese
Fox started their restaurant
with a simple desire
to serve great food to other
families in the Chicago’s
Beverly neighborhood.
That rich history of the
restaurant is kept alive
today by Thomas Fox’s
descendents, and Fox’s is
now a beloved spot by residents
not only at its original
location in Chicago’s Beverly
neighborhood, 9956
Western Ave., but also in
Mokena and Orland Park.
Fifty-five years later,
Fox’s Restaurant & Pub
still serves up everything
from tasty pizza to classic
Italian fare and more at a
fair price.
The Foxes expanded
their family of restaurants
to open locations in Oak
Lawn in 1971, Orland Park
in 1973 and Mokena in
2006.
And a tradition as important
as its great food and
family prices is the annual
celebration of St. Patrick’s
Day, now just a couple
weeks away.
“It first became a south
side tradition for Fox’s and
people that come to Fox’s,”
said Ryan Fox, general manager
at the Mokena location.
“And now, we celebrate all
month long at Fox’s.”
Make sure to check in at
Foxspubs.com as March
17 nears for a full list and
details of entertainment in
honor of St. Patrick’s Day.
Hearing aids have now
evolved thanks to Livio AI
South Suburban Hearing Health Centers
in Homer Glen, Mokena and Burr
Ridge have worked with many different
types and brands of hearing instruments,
but in most cases, they’ve all got one major
limitation: They’re only trying to restore
a certain function to the level that
you’d expect in someone without a particular
disability. That’s utterly commendable,
but with modern technology, it’s
sometimes possible to go further than this
— to actually try and raise certain senses
or functions beyond what you might normally
expect to find.
That’s definitely the case for a smart
new hearing aid South Suburban Hearing
Health Center is making available
from Starkey Hearing Technologies. With
its newly launched Livio AI. device, the
company is reinventing the humble hearing
aid for the machine learning generation.
Not only does the Livio hearing aid
enhance your ability to hear things, but it
can also automatically translate foreign
languages, and even track physical and
mental well-being. Think of it like the
Babel Fish from “The Hitchhiker’s Guide
to the Galaxy” only with some extra cool
tech thrown in there for good measure!
Hearing aids have so far been singlepurpose
devices. The Livio AI changes that.
As well as helping people hear better by
amplifying sound, embedded sensors and
artificial intelligence are turning the hearing
aid into a multifunctional health-monitoring
and multi-use device that will help us lead
better lives in many more ways.
The next-gen hearing aid can translate
between 27 languages, has step-counting
features and has the ability to quantify
your “brain score” based on active listening
and social engagement. The device
also uses built-in sensors to automatically
detect if the user falls down. If a fall is
detected, the hearing aid will then notify
designated emergency contacts by sending
alert messages.
Tech-forward Artistic Dentistry keeps growing
This isn’t your grandfather’s
— or even your
father’s — dentist’s office.
At Artistic Dentistry,
14811 S. Founder’s Crossing
in Homer Glen, dental
work continues to evolve
in stride with the technology
age, providing patients
with more efficient and
comfortable service.
And now, the newly
renovated practice is expanding
its services even
further with the addition
of Botox to treat dental issues.
Botox relaxes the muscles
and has been proven
to ease or halt grinding
and clenching of teeth,
which can lead to everything
from jaw fatigue
and soreness to fractured
teeth. The treatment also
can help those who suffer
from sleep apnea, for
which grinding of the teeth
is a common side ailment.
With Botox now onsite,
Artistic Dentistry can
also expand its cosmetic
offerings, which already
include teeth whitening
(Zoom Whitespeed) and
veneers.
Dental and facial imperfections
can be a strain to
a person’s self-esteem, and
Artistic Dentistry is proud
to work to end that feeling,
according to the practice’s
manager Jeanette
Akroush, who added she
wants patients to, “Look
the age you feel.”
“We can see the joy we
are giving [our patients],”
she said. “People [are] so
happy, and hugging you.
We are giving people back
that confidence that they
need to get through the
day.”
Since opening, the practice
has focused on researching,
installing and
offering the latest and
greatest options for dental
treatment.
Aside from the newest
addition of Botox, Artistic
Dentistry uses state-of-theart
technology, such as:
• The Cone Beam CT
Scan, which minimizes
radiation exposure by
Live life to the fullest with Clarendale’s help
What’s the buzz all about, and is
there more behind the blanket of senior
living that truly sets apart any
place from another?
“There are success stories that are
still living with us, such as regaining
independence; and then there are the
residents that inspire you to be a better
person and step into your calling
by honoring them through their final
moments. It’s what brings me back
day after day,” said Kathryn, Director
of Community Relations.
Ed Larson had been a resident that
moved to Clarendale from another
local senior facility.
“It was amazing the services the
entire Clarendale family provided,”
Larson said. “All and all, we cannot
say enough about how my father
enjoyed living at Clarendale and
called it home, but most importantly,
how they even took time out of
their personal schedules and could
not do enough for him…or us… his
last couple of days. Everyone, staff
members and residents, became true
family to my father and we cannot
thank you enough for that.“
The 156-apartment community
is among a short list of South Suburban
Senior Communities offering
Independent Living, Assisted Living
and Memory Support that is monthto-month
rental. Internally options
abound with on-site choices to minimize
hospital admissions, promote
independence, and reclaim confidence
and purpose.
“I chose Clarendale for the lifestyle
and way it made me feel, and
I’ve never regretted it,” Marie said.
Marie is one of the original Founders’
Club, more than 40 of which still
live at Clarendale of Mokena, threeand-a-half
years later.
“The people are so helpful,” Marie
said. “You’re not lacking anything
here. If you are, it’s your fault. …I
wouldn’t move from here for anything
in the world.”
What’s your lucky number? Clarendale
of Mokena is hosting an intimate
Calling all grandparents,
do not fall for this scam
Hanover Place an exceptional
community to call home
Every year, many active seniors decide
that owning a home or a townhome
is just too much work and expensive to
keep up. There are utilities that have high
costs to heat or cool large spaces, property
tax bills to pay and inevitably there
are repairs.
But even beyond the home, seniors are
looking for more and more options for
socialization and exciting things to do beyond
a favorite television show.
Hanover Place can combine the pleasure
of living alone in a maintenance free
apartment, offering lower costs when you
combine all of the utility costs and upkeep
of your own private home. Our design is
simple. We provide lovely, comfortable
1-2 bedroom apartments, with amenities
in a friendly, social community.
Our residents and families enjoy our
movie theater, library, fitness gym, bistro
lounge, game room and even our beauty
shop. We feature an activity calendar with
daily events both inside the community,
as well as field trips and outings to local
Each year, hundreds of thousands of
people are victims of impersonation
scams where criminals try to trick consumers
into sending them money by pretending
to be someone they are not. The
“grandparent scam” is one type that deliberately
targets older Americans.
To commit this crime, fraudsters call
claiming to be a family member in serious
trouble and in need of money immediately.
The scammer might say he’s stranded
or has been mugged, and they may call
in the middle of the night to add to the
urgency and confusion. Once the money
is wired, the victim later finds out that it
wasn’t their grandchild they were helping,
it was a criminal.
To avoid this type of scam, consider
taking the following steps:
• Confirm the caller. Fraudsters are using
social networking sites to gain the
personal information of friends and
relatives to carry out their crimes. Verify
the caller by calling them back on
a known number or consult a trusted
family member before acting on any
request.
• Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Fraudsters
want to execute their crimes
quickly. In this type of scam, they count
on fear and your concern for your loved
one to make you act before you think.
The more questions you ask, the more
inclined they will be to ditch the scam
Please see scam, 14
shopping, restaurants and entertainment.
Just six months ago, Greystar took over
management at our community. They
have expanded on our activity program
to include at least one large event every
month. These are designed not only for
our residents to enjoy, but also for our curios
prospects to come and view the community.
Spend some time with us, enjoy
some refreshments and take a look at a
whole new lifestyle.
We will continue to place ads for our
events in your local papers, I hope that
you will consider joining us. Our staff
goes to great lengths to provide a different
experience for each and every event. We
hope that as you make your decisions to
move, you will already have a great comfort
in our community at Hanover Place.
State-of-the-art Mill Pond Dental in
Mokena puts patients first at all times
After working for several
years as an associate in
dental offices in Chicago
and the southwest suburbs,
Dr. Eric Young fulfilled his
longtime dream of owning
a business in December
2017 when he opened the
doors to Mill Pond Dental
Group in Mokena.
A year on, Dr. Young
wants to say thank you to
his patients, neighbors and
the many people throughout
the community who
graciously welcomed Mill
Pond Dental Group to the
community.
Dr. Young said the reception
he has received
from patients is “beyond
expectations” and “extremely
satisfying,” adding
his new patient base is
growing thanks to wordof-mouth
referrals from
current patients.
Mill Pond’s “state-ofthe-art”
facility offers the
full range of dental services,
from “bread and butter”
services like fillings and
crowns to high-end cosmetic
work, implants and
dentures.
“We try to keep everything
in house, so we try
to offer all dental services,
basically a one-stop for patients,”
Dr. Young said.
The fully digital office,
which includes digital X-
ray and CT scan machines,
is catered toward patients
who have stayed away
from dentists’ offices because
they fear the experience.
“We try to convert those
patients who haven’t seen
a dentist in a long time due
to fear and get them used
to being back in the chair
and feeling comfortable
once again and taking care
of their oral needs,” Dr.
Young said.
Dr. Young said Mill Pond
Dental Group’s top priorities
are patient care and the
patient experience, with a
focus on high-quality treatment.
“We want to make sure
that the moment you call
the office you’re greeted
nicely and the moment that
you step into the office and
leave that you’re leaving
with a smile,” Dr. Young
said. “Not everyone likes to
come to the dentist. It can
be a scary experience for
some, so we want to make
sure that we’re really wowing
you and taking care of
you and making you feel
comfortable.
“At the end of the day,
the most important thing
is making sure people are
happy and that we’re helping
them with their oral
health.”
As a growing small
business, Mill Pond Dental
Group is always accepting
new patients, and Dr.
Young makes it easy for
those who are interested in
his services to get an appointment.
Prospective patients can
schedule an appointment
by calling Mill Pond Dental
Group at (708) 722-
Postmenopausal health issues all taken
care of at Women’s Healthcare of Illinois
Women’s Healthcare of Illinois
is devoted to providing
comprehensive and exceptional
care to meet the individual needs
of our patients.
We are committed to serving
women throughout their life
stages from adolescence through
adulthood. We offer a full range
of medical care for women specializing
in obstetrics and gynecology
services, as well as
urogynecology. We treat menopause
syndrome, osteoporosis,
vaginal atrophy, uterine fibroids,
endometriosis, abnormal uterine
bleeding, pelvic pain, pelvic prolapse,
urinary incontinence and
overactive bladder. We also provide
infertility evaluations, ultrasound,
lab services and Mona
Lisa treatments on site.
We all know menopause is the
conclusion of menstruation and
includes side effects such as hot
flashes and changes in mood. But
what we aren’t talking about is
that millions of women also experience
vaginal atrophy, which
includes ongoing vaginal dryness,
itching burning and pain
with intercourse. Mona Lisa
Touch Therapy is a minimallyinvasive
treatment utilized to
improve the health of the innerlining
of the vagina.
Susan Schreffler, found herself
dealing with this issue. She
had a hysterectomy and bilateral
salpingo-oophorectomy (removal
of the uterus, fallopian tubes
and ovaries) in her mid 30s. The
effects of the surgery caused her
to go into early menopause. The
average age for menopause is 51
years old.
According to the American
Academy of Family Physicians,
up to 40 percent of postmenopausal
women have vaginal atrophy.
With nearly 64 million
postmenopausal patients, many
women are suffering.
“During the free consultation,
Dr. Finkelstein answered all of
my questions and made me feel
comfortable,” Shreffler said. “I
decided to get my first treatment
at my consultation. The treatment
itself is pain free, requires
no downtime, has no side effects
and is done in just a few minutes
in the office. There are three
treatments done six weeks apart.
I was amazed by the results.
After my first treatment, I felt
relief. I am no longer suffering
from vaginal atrophy.”
“These symptoms greatly impact
a women’s quality of life,”
Finkelstein added. “As someone
who has taken care of women
for over twenty years, I have
watched countless women live
with discomfort and struggle
with intimacy. Finally, we have
a solution.”
Women’s Healthcare of Illinois
understands your health
issues are personal. Our experienced
doctors and nurse practitioners
strive to build a trusting
relationship that will last a lifetime.
We foster open communication
and will do all we can to
make you feel comfortable. We
look forward to becoming your
Products we offer include cannabis flower,
concentrates, topicals, oils and edibles.
All cannabis forms we offer are made
up of medicinal compounds, including
THC and CBD. The staff at Greenhouse
is compassionate and attuned to the needs
of our patients. We will work with you to
find the medicine that is right for you.
How does medical cannabis work?
The human body contains a system
called the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
This system is made up of CB1 and CB2
receptors and is responsible for keeping
the body in balance and regulating many
of its functions. When a function in your
body needs regulation, such as when you
experience pain or anxiety, your body produces
endocannabinoids like Anandamide
and 2AG to aid in achieving balance.
This is where cannabis comes in. The
cannabis plant contains phytocannabinoids,
cannabinoids that also react with
the CB1 and CB2 receptors in your body
and help regulate the body’s functions.
The most common of these are THC and
CBD. Cannabis can be used to treat a
wide variety of conditions because it interacts
with a system that is directly related
to most of the processes that already
take place within your body.
Clinically proven treatment
with medical cannabis
The effectiveness of cannabis as an analgesic
and pain reliever continues to be
proven. It can also be used to reduce the
use of pain medications: A recent study
in the Journal of Pain found that patients
who use cannabis for chronic pain show a
64% lower rate of opioid use.
The state of Illinois has two programs
that enable access to medical cannabis.
The Medical Cannabis Pilot Program
allows patients to receive medical cannabis
if they have been diagnosed with one
of 41 approved conditions. Included in
the list are cancer, agitation of Alzheimer’s,
rheumatoid arthritis, PTSD, fibromyalgia
and many others. For the full list,
visit bit.ly/MC_Conditions.
The Opioid Alternative Pilot Program
(is an option for patients who have been
or could be prescribed an opioid, based
on the medical standard of care. Patients
who are dealing with pain from a variety
of conditions, a recent surgery, or those
who simply would like to reduce their use
of opiates will now have access to medical
cannabis to help.
Will medical cannabis help people?
Unique approach to care offers daily joy
People are no longer
alone in caring for their
loved one with Alzheimer’s,
dementia or other
types of memory loss.
At Evergreen Senior Living
in Orland Park, we offer
The Legacy: Memory Support.
Our team of trained
caregivers offers personalized
care and a unique approach
to caring for seniors
with memory loss.
“My mother knew that
there was something going
on with her short term
memory. It’s hard to be a
24-hour caregiver,” one
resident’s daughter said.
“They [Evergreen Senior
Living team] have learned
to work with my mom and
how to take care of her. My
relationship with her is fabulous
now.”
At Evergreen Senior Living,
Legacy Living means
that you are making sure
that your loved one is cared
for in the best way possible
based on their needs. When
you choose Legacy Living,
your promise to care for
your loved one is fulfilled.
Evergreen Senior Living
Wellness Coordinator Pauline
McGrath echoes these
sentiments.
“We have a great team
of caregivers, of nurses, of
staff that really love our
residents,” she said.
At Evergreen Senior Living
The Legacy: Memory
Support, we let each day
gently unfold, taking into
account each seniors’ preferences
and comfort levels.
Our person-centered programming
promotes socialization
during a time that
can feel incredibly isolating.
The Legacy: Memory
Support staff, who come
in each day refreshed and
revitalized, take care of the
day to day tasks so you can
go back to your favorite
role in your loved one’s life
– family.
Legacy: Memory Support
Coordinator Kaylee
Meyers agrees.
“We are by no means
taking anything away from
the family or the resident
themselves; we are just giving
things back,” Meyers
said. “Maintaining family
contact is one of our biggest
goals.“
This unique approach
works in tandem with our
unique campus, which has
been created to strategically
cater to our residents
with memory loss. Every
detail at The Legacy:
Memory Care has been designed
with your loved one
in mind.
Walking paths are designed
in a continuous
figure eight, so one can
always find their way to
their destination. Customized
memory boxes hang
outside of rooms help residents
know they are home.
Bathrooms are set at an
angle in the apartments so
that residents have a clear
idea of how to enter and
exit. Kitchen/dining areas
are built for smaller groups
to ensure less noise and interruptions
and more individualized
attention.
Evergreen Senior Living
is a part of the Heritage
Health family, one
of Illinois’ leading senior
healthcare providers. With
55 years of successful care
to refine our approaches so
our seniors with memory
New Lenox-based
business works to make
clothes dryers safer
Hidden buildup in
clothes dryer vent
is fire hazard
DON’T LET YOUR DRYER
START A
FIRE!
Most people know they
need to clean out their
dryer lint tray between
each cycle, but what lurks
behind the wall is just as
important for safety and
avoiding fire traps, as well
as fully efficient dryer performance.
Joe Enzenberger,
owner of Dryer Vent
Wizard, opened his New
Lenox-based business in
2009.
Lint is the villain, which
is lint that has been allowed
to build up and linger too
long in the dryer exhaust
vent. It is estimated by the
U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission and
the U.S. Fire Administration
that 15,500 fires associated
with clothes dryers
occur annually. These fires
account for an average of
20 deaths, 370 injuries and
more than $88 million in
property damage. “Failure
to clean the dryer vent”
was the leading factor cited
in U.S. Fire Administration
reports.
“It is something very
few people know about or
think about,” said Enzenberger,
whose company
specializes in dryer vent
cleaning, repair, alteration
and installation. “It is
the leading cause of dryer
fires.”
Lint accumulation also
can cause dryers to stop
working or to work inefficiently.
A dryer vent
clogged with lint can add
as much as $18 to $24 per
month to energy costs.
“Improper venting
causes problems, as well,”
he said. “The dryer exhaust
duct and connections
should be made of rigid
metal or semi-rigid metal
and secured with metal
heat-resistant tape rather
than duct tape. I often find
plastic or foil accordiontype
material, which can
easily trap lint and is more
susceptible to kinks and
crushing.”
Warning signs include:
• Clothes are taking more
than one cycle to dry, especially
jeans & towels.
• No lint visible on lint
screen.
• Dryer repeatedly stops
during a cycle.
• Clothes have moldy
smell after dry cycle.
• Clothes are very hot after
a dry cycle.
• The top of your dryer hot
to the touch while running.
• There’s excess lint left on
your clothing.
“This has been a consumer
education process,
but it’s hard to get the
word out,” Enzenberger
said. “Most don’t call until
they have a serious problem
with their dryer.”
He suggests people
treat clothes dryers as a
household item in need of
regular maintenance. Consumers
can protect dryer
performance and promote
safety by cleaning the lint
screen between each use,
ensuring the connection
between the dryer and
wall is made of compliant
material and remains
unkinked, and having the
dryer exhaust duct cleaned
regularly. Dryer manufacturers
recommend inspection
and cleaning at least
annually.
Now is the perfect time
to have an inspection and
cleaning of clothes dryers
and dryer vent systems.
Another important tip is
to never let your clothes
dryer run when you are out
of the house or asleep.
