Camp Birchwood’s countdown to confidence
Camp values that make
a difference
No. 10. Girls make their own
decisions
Camp engages girls in their own
decision-making process. Yes,
without mom or dad there, it’s up
to them to make their schedule and
live out their every day. Sometimes
they make mistakes, but
those gentle set-backs show them
they can persevere and face more
challenges in their future.
No. 9. Girls do cool stuff
Studies indicate that girls tend to
base their self-worth on their relationships
rather than “hard skills”
or actual accomplishments. At
Birchwood, girls get off the roller
coaster of “what others think” and
start doing. What they gain is a
kind of “know how” no one can
ever take away.
No. 8. Girls gain those
indispensable “soft skills”
Unlike hard skills that are based
on the ability to perform a task,
soft skills relate to how well you
conduct yourself within a group.
At Birchwood, girls develop
crucial soft skills living in a cabin
of 10-12 their peers. In doing
so, they learn to share, use good
manners, listen well, speak with
respect, tolerate differences and
come together as a team to accomplish
goals.
No. 7. An all-female setting is
all-special
Our all-female setting minimizes
distractions and invites
girls to communicate openly and
authentically. There’s no competition
about appearance, or status,
or popularity. Girls can let go of
“who they think they should be to
impress others” and focus instead
- on who they truly are - unique,
valuable and worthwhile individuals
capable of greatness.
No. 6. At Birchwood, girls stop,
look, listen and reflect
At Birchwood, our counselors
incorporate intentional learning
moments into every day. Girls
are asked to reflect on their efforts
(big or small) so they can appreciate
their own progress (rather than
compare it to others). Crystallizing
their growth turns the simplest
moment into an epic confidence
booster.
No. 5. Social media takes a back
seat to soulful socializing
At Birchwood, all the gadgets
are put away. Girls focus on what
is happening in the moment. Life
is not measured by selfies. It is
measured by shared laughs, outdoor
adventures, meaningful conversations,
challenges overcome
and real connections made with
friends in real time.
No. 4. Time in the outdoors is the
best time of all
At Birchwood, girls depart the
blitz and chaos of modern life
and enter a space where they can
breathe fresh air, dive into cool
waters and sit with the earth. A
calm simplicity weaves itself into
their everyday experience. Stresses
dissipate. Their world becomes
smaller. More manageable. Better.
Happier. Healthier.
No. 3. Real role models who make
a real difference
Sometimes it takes someone
who isn’t your adoring parent to
motivate and inspire you as you
grow up.
At Birchwood, girls are surrounded
by female role models
worthy of emulation. These college-age
ladies empower girls to
celebrate their individuality, take
on brand new challenges, express
their opinions with respect and appreciate
uniqueness in others.
No. 2. Friends really are friends
forever
As girls share their most joyful,
honest self with one another,
a binding connection is made. At
Birchwood girls learn what it feels
like to live kindly and respectfully
with one another. From start
to finish, they are encouraged to
care for their own self and for others.
The kindred connection that
is built within this setting lasts a
lifetime.
No. 1. Resilience and strength is
learned
Whether sailing, camping,
shooting an arrow, or making art,
every day at Birchwood girls are
active, soulful participants in their
own lives. The live big. They
learn hands-on. And they stand
taller and prouder – and stronger
- when they go home because of it.
Interactive coding at
Codeverse summer camp
Imagine a futuristic wonderland designed
just for kids. A world full of endless
possibilities and adventure, where kids
can explore and experiment with gadgets
and advanced, cutting-edge technology. A
place where today’s kids invent tomorrow.
Introducing Codeverse summer camps,
the best interactive coding experience for
kids aged 6-13. Throughout the months
of June, July and August, Codeverse offers
innovative week-long camps, aptly
named “Coding FUNdamentals”, for
tech-loving kids.
Coding FUNdamentals
Whether your child is new to coding
or has been grabbing for the family
iPad since they could toddle, this actionpacked
camp is perfect for beginners or
experienced coders alike. Campers spend
a week learning a myriad of topics including:
coding, video game development,
app design, 3D printing and CNC machining.
In addition to this, campers design a
real robot, then participate in fun challenges
(including obstacle course races)
using their cool new robot friend and
the power of circuitry. To cap it off, all
campers show off their coding creations
and projects to family and friends during
‘Demo Day’, held on the last day of camp.
Codeverse camps run weekdays, Monday
to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.,
throughout the months of June, July, and
August. Camps include meals and snacks,
complimentary early drop-off and pickup
every day, outdoor play time and organized
field trips to nearby businesses.
Right now, Codeverse is offering $200
off camps. To reserve a spot for your kid
at Codeverse summer camp, visit www.
Music Theater Works summer workshop builds
confidence on stage with all students guaranteed a part
For the past 18 summers,
children from 8 to
13 have learned about musical
theater firsthand at
Music Theater Works in
Wilmette.
“I think it was Hannah
who convinced me we really
had a good thing going,”
recalled general manager
Bridget McDonough, when
asked about her favorite
memories of the company’s
summer workshop
programs. “Hannah was a
sassier, more self-assured
Nathan Detroit in “Guys
and Dolls” than any tenyear-old
little red-haired
girl had a right to be.
“I was flabbergasted
when I found out later
that on the first day of the
workshop, Hannah’s mom
approached our director to
say her daughter had never
been on stage before and
might need a little extra
coaching and coaxing to
get over her shyness. Believe
me, on stage that girl
was not shy.”
Performing offers so
many benefits to young
people: It builds confidence,
enhances observational
and analytical skills,
fosters teamwork and,
above all, is a lot of fun.
At Music Theater
Works, children get to
sing, dance and act, in a
nurturing and fun atmosphere.
No experience or
audition is required and
everyone gets a part.
“Our staff does a wonderful
job giving each of
the kids their moment to
shine, regardless of their
experience level,” Mc-
Donough said.
Young people ages 8 to
13 learn from professional
teaching artists to prepare
a performance of a minimusical.
“You’d be amazed at
what these kids accomplish
in only six days,”
McDonough said. “I know
Hannah’s parents were.”
Five separate one-week
workshops will be offered
this summer, based
on popular musicals.
Each workshop is Monday
through Friday from
9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the
Music Theater Works rehearsal
center, 516 4th St.
in Wilmette. On Saturday,
students gather for a final
dress rehearsal at 1 p.m.
and offer a free public performance
for family and
friends at 4 p.m.
The 2019 schedule
“Annie” July 8-13
“Fiddler on the Roof”
July 15-20
“Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat”
July 22-27
“Chitty Chitty Bang
Bang” July 29-August 3
“42nd Street” August
5-10
The fee is $425 per student
per workshop. Scholarships
are available based
on need.
In addition, a staged
summer teen production
of “How to Succeed in
Business Without Really
Trying” is offered for ages
13 to 18 (June 13-29, with
performance on June 29
at 7:30 p.m.). Each role
is individually cast from
auditions. The production
features professional costumes,
sound and lighting.
Fee is $1,325 per student.
Harand Camp of the Theatre Arts presents 65th season
combining performing arts with fun of camp life
One, three, six-week
overnight camps for
ages 7-18
The renowned Harand Camp
of the Theatre Arts, located on
the campus of Carthage College
in Kenosha, Wis., will present
its 65th Anniversary Season in
Summer 2019. To register, or
for more information, contact
(847) 864-1500, harandcamp@
gmail.com or visit www.harandcamp.com.
Established in 1955, Harand
Camp was one of the first overnight
camps to combine musical
theater with the fun of traditional
camp life. Located on the beautiful
campus of Carthage College
in Kenosha, Wis., Harand
offers performing arts training
for campers ages 7 to 18, plus
sports, activities and camp fun
in a non-competitive, nurturing
environment. Sessions run one,
three, or six weeks and culminate
with large-scale performances
in a 400-seat, state-ofthe-art
theater.
In preparation for shows,
campers take daily classes in
singing, dancing and acting
with occasional evening rehearsals.
Harand Camp adheres
to a non-competitive philosophy
where “no man is an island”
and everyone is a star. It is the
goal for everyone to develop
performance skills while also
building self-confidence. Harand
is a second home to thousands
of alums worldwide who
have built lifelong friendships
and cherished memories.
During the first three-week
session (June 16 – July 7) campers
perform in a major musical
revue featuring the entire camp.
Each group stars in two sections
of non-stop singing and dancing
wearing amazing costumes.
During the second three-week
session (July 8 – 28) each age
group prepares a full-length
musical with every camper performing
a lead role and in the
ensemble – ensuring everyone
has the chance to shine.
Campers may also attend for
six weeks (June 16 - July 28) or
a unique one-week workshop
(June 16 – 22) exclusive to new
campers, ages 7-12. This option
is perfect for children who have
never been away from home.
In addition to the theatre program,
campers take three electives
per day. Options include
a variety of sports, fitness, fine
arts and activity classes as well
as additional performing arts
and production electives. Every
evening features an exciting
schedule of cabin nights, events,
all-camp games, concerts and
trips bowling, skating, or to a
local entertainment park.
Campers also enjoy the comfort
of modern facilities, residing
in dorms overlooking Lake
Michigan. Delicious meals are
served in a renovated dining
hall with an extensive menu
by Sodexo. Accommodations
can be made for special dietary
needs. Other amenities include:
Olympic-size pool, dance & fitness
center, on-campus security,
nurse, low camper/staff ratio,
and ACA Accreditation (Program
Excellence Award).
Harand Camp strives to make
the camp experience affordable
for all families and offers
a variety of discounts, payment
plans and scholarships. Needbased
scholarships are awarded
through the Harand Camp
Scholarship Fund, a 501c3 organization.
Art league offers summer camp
Each summer, scores of children
flock to the North Shore Art League’s
art camps. The camp team includes
experienced art teachers who are excited
for the chance to provide more
in-depth projects and lessons to the
campers.
For eight weeks, the Art League
becomes a destination for students
to delve into their creativity. The
Art League is a 95-year-old community
of artists, working and learning
together. We pride ourselves on
our professional staff, imaginative
instruction and personal learning
experiences. The NSAL provides a
nurturing environment for the campers.
Our art curriculum bridges many
disciplines. Research shows that participation
in the arts at a young age
helps children in all areas of learning.
We make the summer easy for
you. The camp will run for eight
weeks, with campers are able to register
for one week, two weeks or all
weeks, depending on their schedule.
Morning camp is designed for the
5-8 year olds, with projects including
painting, drawing, clay, mixed
media, miniature worlds, watercolor
and more. Children 9-11 years old
are welcomed to the afternoon camp
sessions where more advanced materials
and projects will be explored.
No two weeks are the same, projects
will not repeat. Arts activities
are unique – they bring people together.
Their benefits help the participant
not only learn new skills, but
also practice many STEAM-based
aspects such as problem solving, coordination
and social interaction.
Chicago North Shore Chinese Center
was founded in 2017. We are located in
Wilmette. From our Chinese immersion
summer camp to our Chinese immersion
after-school program, we have just the
language immersion program to fit your
needs. Our past summer camp programs
are really a big success. Parents came to
us by word of mouth.
The center aims to create lifelong language
learners through encouraging the
development of exceptional Chinese
language skills early in life. To this end,
the center offers a rigorous 10-week
language immersion experience for students
between ages of 3.5 and 16 years
old. Speaking in Chinese while engaging
in meaningful cultural exploration projects,
students make unrivaled strides in
language acquisition in only 10 weeks.
Through the learning experience, students
become linguistically proficient
and culturally versed, gaining the language
skills and global awareness to
succeed in school and beyond. We will
group children based on their language
level and give them different assignments.
The key difference between our organization
and others is that we advocate
the full language immersion concept.
Our teachers are experienced and authentic
Chinese teachers. We create an
authentic Chinese speaking classroom.
We also request our students to communicate
with our teachers and between
them in Chinese. Our immersion program
focuses on improving learners’
conversation skills and listening skills
of Chinese, expanding their Chinese vocabularies
and providing them in-depth
exposure of Chinese culture.
Our Chinese language immersion
camp is a place for both fun and knowledge
where we advocate learning through
play and by doing. We have five themes:
Exploring Nature, Rising Stars, Time to
Power Up Tech Academy brings coding,
minecraft, digital art to the North Shore
Tech-loving kids will
have a blast this summer
learning how to code their
own video games, produce
YouTube videos, build and
code robotic creations, and
much more at Power Up
Tech Academy’s Summer
Tech Camps. Power Up
Tech Academy has been
teaching kids how to code
and create in Chicago for
the past four years, and
now they are bringing their
wildly popular summer
camps to the North Shore.
These hands-on camps,
where kids learn to make
awesome creations with
technology, will be the
highlight of any summer.
Power Up provides the
lowest student-teacher ratio
anywhere, 4:1 or 5:1
depending on the camp,
and a maximum camp size
of 10 students. So parents
can be sure their child
will get personalized instruction
and mentorship
throughout the week.
There is also daily outdoor
time, which provides
both a brain break for better
learning and another
setting to bond with new
friends.
Power Up offers a huge
variety of tech camps, for
kids from ages 6-15 at all
skill levels. Coding camps
range from Early Coding,
Robotics & Engineering
for 6-8 year olds, all the
way up to professional
coding languages such Python
& Robotics or Javascript
Video Game Coding.
In addition to coding,
kids can express themselves
artistically at the
Creative Studio: YouTube
Videos & Digital Art
camp. And Power Up offers
three levels of Minecraft
camps, a rare find in
the city or suburbs, perfect
for the budding architect
or engineer.
Each week you can register
for a different camp in
the morning or afternoon.
So you have the flexibility
to attend just once or multiple
weeks.
Power Up Tech Academy
will be running Summer
Tech Camps for 2019
at Unity on The North
Shore, 3434 Central St.
Evanston, IL. This convenient
location is right
on the border of Skokie,
Evanston and Wilmette,
very close to Kenilworth
and Morton Grove and
near the Old Orchard Mall.
Interested parents are invited
to attend one of the
meet and greets at Unity
on the North Shore:
Bit Space offers an opportunity to build real things
Summer camp at Bit
Space is week-long, project-based
learning for children
entering first through
12th grade. Each week, we
introduce a set of tools,
techniques and materials
to each of three age groups.
Using the week’s theme
as a starting point, campers
work individually, in
small groups or as a team
to create something that
explores, expresses,and
expands upon their skill
and creativity.
Bit Space is Chicagoland’s
premier maker lab
for kids and teens — a
place where they can learn
to use real tools to build
real things. Students work
with our guides to learn
how to use hand tools,
power tools, electronics,
robotics, 3D printers, laser
cutters, CNC milling
machines, computer modeling
and design software,
computer game development
software, virtual
reality and new media to
design and build just about
anything. We try to live
up to our goal of inspiring
and guiding the next
generation of inventors,
entrepreneurs and problem
solvers by teaching kids
and teens to be producers
rather than consumers of
technology. Our guides are
experts from the fields of
architecture, design, engineering
and computer programming.
Our youngest campers
learn to safely and effectively
use basic hand tools
and power tools in our
woodshop, become familiar
with 2D design software
and laser cutting and
integrate basic circuitry
and motors into their projects.
Campers create individual
projects in a group
setting.
Our intermediate campers
take the next step in
their “making” journey
by being introduced to
programmable electronics
(Arduino), 3D modeling
software (Blender),
3D printing, video game
development (Unity 3D)
and video and sound editing
software. Campers
work in small groups and
collaborate to re-imagine
the Inter-Act Cube every
week.
Our campers entering
their junior high and
high school years will
determine how they will
engage with the week’s
theme and choose where
and how they will make
their contribution to Friday’s
exhibition. There are
very few restrictions as to
which tools and technologies
they can use. Higher
level craftsmanship in
physical construction, virtual
reality technology,
new media and real coding
skills are all on the table.
These campers are paired
with our most experienced
maker-educators to maximize
their potential.
Camp Jorn’s everyday
camp is an adventure
For more than 65 years, Camp Jorn
has provided boys and girls the opportunity
to become part of a special community
focused on character, values,
self-discovery and independence. Camp
Jorn YMCA is situated on a 70+ acre
peninsula in Wisconsin’s Northwoods in
Manitowish Waters, WI.
Camp Jorn YMCA has made a commitment
to ensure a positive and safe
camping experience for each child who
attends our summer program. Our focus
on character development helps youth to
grow in the areas of our four core values
– caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Campers range from ages 8-17. Camp
Jorn offers campers the opportunity to
stay for one week or two weeks at a time.
At Camp Jorn, campers will participate
in three instructional classes per day.
Other times are dedicated to cabin activities.
The cabin group participates in
activities such as trail rides, tubing, sailing,
cabin challenges, sports and more.
Evenings are a blast. We have all-camp
activities such as campfires, skits, games
such as Wells Fargo (think Capture the
Flag), Granny’s Candy, Gold Rush and
more. On closing night we have our
Friendship Fire ceremony.
Teen programs include TEVA (13-15
yr. olds) and CIT (Counselor in Training
16+). TEVA offers older campers
increased independence and responsibility,
with some familiarity of traditional
summer camp. TEVA campers reside in
Camp Jorn’s Yurt Village as a community.
TEVA campers spend part of the day
BOYS
& GIRLS
AGES 3-12
gaining leadership skills through an array
of outdoor skills lessons. Cabin activities
are focused on service-leadership and
preparing (training) for their wilderness
trip. Campers also get the experience of
outdoor cooking in TEVA’s own outdoor
kitchen. Each TEVA session includes the
opportunity to experience a wilderness
canoe or back packing trip. TEVAs will
leave camp with a greater sense of themselves
and skills to be a leader. CITs will
work closely with members of the counseling
team and leadership staff while
going through training. Their schedule
will consist of spending time with our
day camp and resident camp programs
to gain group management and youth
development skills through experiential
learning.
Camp Jorn does provide scholarships
to campers as we never want anyone to
miss out on camp.
You won’t want to miss out on a summer
at Camp Jorn.
Banner Preschool Summer Camp
offers engaging activities
Serving the North Shore community
for over four decades, Banner
continues to educate during the
most developmental years of one’s
life: childhood.
According to Owner/Executive
Director Alex Lipscomb, she and
her team go beyond preparing children
for kindergarten; they prepare
them for life.
“At Banner, our philosophy is to
educate and strengthen the young
child by establishing a healthy
foundation so that their lives may
be full of optimal achievement and
happiness,” Lipscomb said.
In Fall 2018, Banner Preschool
moved to a new location at Am Yisrael
in Northfield across from New
Trier West. This beautiful space allows
natural light into classrooms
and easy access to outdoor spaces
for exploration and play.
“Banner Bunch Summer Camp”
is returning for Summer 2019, running
from June 17 through August
16 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
“Our perspective is to provide
some balance for the modern child
by remaining tech and media-free
and spending as much time outdoors
as possible. Banner campers
and parents wait all year for Banner
Camp to return,” Lipscomb said.
Campers will experience engaging
activities such as nature walks,
gardening, games, obstacle courses,
cooking, baking and music.
Banner certified teachers and veteran
counselors create a personal
connection with each and every
child. This individualized camp
experience encourages children to
explore their world and engage in
creative play and learning.
“Our children learn by doing,”
Lipscomb said. “At Banner, your
child has time to grow, ask questions,
be curious, make choices,
explore, experiment, discover and
be.”
Banner Bunch is for children
ages 3- 6 with options for 2, 3, and 5
attendance. These campers must be
potty trained. “Bitty” Bunch meets
T/Th for children 2 ½ + and/or not
yet potty trained.
“Bridge” camp returns from June
3 to June 14 from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m.
Monday-Friday for children ages 2-
6; potty trained not mandatory. Before
Care available from 8 to 9 a.m.
