RECIPE
EASY CHICKEN PARMIGIANA
by Faz Razeen
Chicken Parmigiana, is a 20th-Century Italian dish consisting of breaded chicken breast covered in tomato sauce, mozzarella
and parmesan. It has been speculated that the dish is based on a combination of the Italian melanzane alla Parmigiana, a dish
using breaded aubergine slices instead of chicken with a cotoletta. The word cotoletta is an Italian word for a breaded veal cutlet.
Various breaded meat dishes prepared in Latin America were inspired by the cotoletta and are known as milanesa.
INGREDIENTS :
Serves 2-3
2 Chicken breasts
2 Garlic cloves, finely crushed
½ cup of Bread crumbs
Handful of grated Parmesan cheese
Handful of chopped fresh Parsley
1 egg, beaten
1-2 tablespoons Olive oil
350g passata
2oz (½ cup) sliced Mozzarella cheese
METHOD :
Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4
Rub the chicken breasts with crushed
garlic and salt and pepper, flatten with
a mallet or back of a knife, cover and
refrigerate for 2 hours in advance.
In a bowl, combine breadcrumbs,
parmesan cheese and parsley, mix well.
Dip chicken breasts in beaten egg and
coat with bread crumb mixture.
Lightly grease a baking dish/tray. Place
the coated chicken in a baking dish/tray
and bake the chicken breasts in the oven
for 40 minutes, or until chicken is forktender
and juices run clear.
Pour ½ of the passata into a baking dish/
tray. Place chicken over the sauce, and
cover over with remaining sauce.
Sprinkle with parmesan cheese to taste
and place sliced mozzarella on top.
Return to the preheated oven for 20
minutes.
Serve with spaghetti or alternatively with
vegetables if you prefer.
LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY
Most people are aware of the importance
of making a Will, ensuring their assets
pass in accordance with their wishes on
their death. Far fewer people, however,
recognise the need to protect those
very same assets during their lifetime. If
a vulnerable person were to lose their
mental capacity for any reason – whether
suddenly, such as through a stroke, or
gradually, such as through Dementia –
their assets could be in danger. At best,
their family would need to fund court
proceedings in order to take control
of the assets in question. At worst, the
assets could be misappropriated by
unscrupulous individuals; a situation
which is sadly all too common today.
The safest, cheapest and easiest way
to prevent this is to draw up a Lasting
Power of Attorney (LPA). This enables
a person to nominate an individual or
individuals (whether family members or
professionals) to look after their affairs on
their behalf if they are unable to. There
are two different types of LPA: Property &
Financial Affairs, and Health & Welfare.
The critical aspect of drawing up an
LPA is that the donor must have the
necessary mental capacity to understand
the nature and purpose of the document.
It is therefore imperative that an LPA is
drawn up before it is too late. If a person
was to suddenly lose their faculties as a
result of, for example, a stroke, an LPA
would no longer be an option available
to them. An already difficult time for
the family can therefore be made
immeasurably worse, and months of
uncertainty can follow. An LPA is by its
nature a precautionary document and
could be viewed as almost akin to an
insurance policy that everyone should
have.
LPAs can appoint up to four attorneys,
and allow for replacements to be named
if any are unable to act in the future.
Before it can be used, any LPA needs
to be registered with the Office of the
Public Guardian. This is a public body
which oversees the work of all attorneys
and ensures a further level of protection
for the donor. Although it does not need
to be, it is generally recommended that
an LPA should be registered as soon as it
is created, so that it is ready as soon as it
is needed.
LPAs are not just useful because of future
mental capacity issues. In addition, a
great many people, as they get older,
simply find looking after their financial
affairs (with all the attendant paperwork)
more and more of a burden – this can
be due more to physical than mental
capacity issues. Making an LPA enables
a person to choose the people they
trust to deal with things for them in the
future, so that they can step in when the
situation requires it.
The good news is that awareness does
appear to be increasing. Last year,
547,000 new documents were registered,
an increase of 34% on the previous year.
If this trend continues, the hope is that in
the future there will be far fewer people
unprepared and therefore left without
assistance at the time when they are
most in need.
For further advice and information
about LPAs and how to make them
60 REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL
BY MICHELE DUKE
I’m writing this in the car speeding
along the motorway between
Bologna and Florence. Isn’t
technology a great thing? The
reason for our trip to Florence?
My 60th birthday is here at last.
It’s been looming for a few months
and now there’s no avoiding it. And
guess what. I’m actually looking
forward to it.
I decided to hit 60 at full tilt. A big
pre-birthday weekend with three
full days of partying kicked it off
and now a lovely holiday in Italy.
I’m feeling very positive about the
next phase of my life and thought
I’d share my 60 reasons to be
cheerful when hitting 60.
1. Being born at the right time.
We are the generation benefiting
from the amazing economic growth
of the past 50 years. The housing
boom and private pensions means
we are generally better off than
previous or future generations.
Now I’m spending it as quickly as
possible. (Did I mention I’m on my
way to Florence?)
2. If you can avoid the obesity
epidemic and ebola, our life
expectancy is decades longer than
when I was born. We have better
health, better medicine and better
skincare than ever before. We
know how to keep ourselves fit and
healthy long into old age. And the
advances in cosmetics offer us the
elixir of youth. I shall be very cross
if I don’t hit 100. And look 60!
3. We had the best music in our
teens and early twenties. Growing
up with glam rock, punk, and rock
music gave us the amazing Bowie,
The Who, Blondie, The Clash. Who
would have thought we’d still be
warbling “hope I die before I get
old’. The golden age of pop keeps
us dancing on arthritic knees. And
we don’t have to pretend to enjoy
horrible, misogynistic, violent (c)rap
that passes for music today.
4. We’ve read all the classics.
Dickens, Shakespeare, Austen. Did
that at school. Now we can read
trashy novels that we forget the
minute they’re finished.
5. Being a grandparent. Watching
my babies become beautiful,
kind, loving adults was the best
experience ever. Until my grandson
was laid in my arms. Who ever
knew a single heart could contain
so much love.
6. Flexibility. The wisdom we gain
over the years allows us to accept
that sometimes we bite off more
than we can chew. Being able to
change our minds without any loss
of face is a skill that develops along
with our wrinkles. Which is why
I’ve decided that 6 reasons to be
cheerful is actually quite enough.
(And we’re almost at the end of the
journey!)
Happy birthday to me and
everyone else who is celebrating
this month. I have a very special
birthday offer for all Golden
Times readers. Book a free faceto-face
Healthy Ageing’ and get 25% off
GARDENING TIPS: MID TO LATE SUMMER
by Phoenix Gardening
HIGH SUMMER AT PASHLEY MANOR GARDENS
Gardeners love to eat what they grow and since in July an
abundance of produce is ready to enjoy, after all the planning,
planting and hard work, what better time to dedicate a week to
the Kitchen Garden.
During the six days of the Kitchen Garden Week there will be
the chance to talk to the Kitchen Gardener and ask questions
and advice, as well
as a focus on how
the produce from
the garden is used
in the café menus;
plus there will be
local honey and
homemade chutney
on sale in the Gift
Shop.
Then, August Bank Holiday weekend will once again see the
return of the Sussex Guild Craft Show to Pashley Manor - a
fantastic selection of high quality crafts and the summer borders
in full bloom combine to make this an ideal time to visit the
garden.
Throughout July and August there are also lots of gorgeous
lilies and the herbaceous borders are in full bloom. From late
August onwards thousands of dazzling dahlias come into flower
ready for our ‘Dahlia Days’ event, which runs from 4th to 14th
September. During ‘Dahlia Days’ Bloms Bulbs will be on site
with a cut dahlia display, giving advice and taking orders.
Well finally we’ve had some rain, I would say in most cases
it’s been welcomed, but in a few perhaps there’s been a little
too much. It’s important to remember that it’s not just the sun
that can dry the ground up, a fresh breeze will soon dry out
exposed roots and dry the top of the soil faster than you’d
think. That’s why it’s important when you have to water to give
plants a good soaking.
Mid-summer perhaps a little ironically once the weather gets
better it’s a time to get out there. Mid-Summer though is a
time for enjoying the garden, most things have either been
planted or sown. So the attention moves to weeding and
watering, keeping a wary eye out for pests and of course that
favourite pastime regular deadheading, it helps to keep the
garden looking tidy and also benefits the plants keeping them
flowering and healthy.
There’s still some planting and sowing in the veg garden
though, you can plant out late cauliflowers, winter cabbages
and leeks.
Lift shallots if they’ve finished growing and let them dry off and
make successional sowings of lettuces and carrots. Continue to
thin out vegetables sown earlier before they get large enough
to compete with each other.
Late Summer – is still a time of keeping things tidy and on top
of weeds. Watering when necessary before plants get stressed.
If it looks to be a dry summer leave the lawn a little longer
between cuts. It’s always worth considering adding a water butt
or an extra one to harvest the rain when it comes.
Clip Hornbeam, beech, Holly and yew hedges, most
evergreens in fact. If you grow cordon or espalier apples it’s
time to give them a summer prune. Rambling roses should be
pruned now too. Birds can be a nuisance for top fruit especially
cherries, try and net them if you can. This is where the smaller
varieties come into their own. Keep an eye on outdoor
tomatoes water and feed them regularly.
It also a time of year to take semi-ripe cuttings and start
planting those spring flowering bulbs.
GLADYS GALLIVANTS:
THE ISLE OF WIGHT - NEARLY MISSED
“I have booked your ferry from
Portsmouth to Isle of Wight,” the South
African agent said, “but you will have to
arrange your own bus trip from Victoria
Station to Portsmouth when you get to
London.”
Sounded fair and I had a few other
bookings to make when I did arrive.
Before the internet that was the way to
make arrangements.
I purchased a ten day bus trip to Devon
and Cornwall along with a three day
tour to Stratford on Avon – with a
Shakespeare play included. As always
when travelling to the UK I would
consider that this might be my last
opportunity to see the country!
Through an influential friend who was a
patron of the arts in London, I had twelve
theatre shows booked for the ten days
in the city which included two Saturday
matinees –‘ Mouse Trap’ and ‘The King
and I’ with Yul Brynner performing his
Siamese King. That was a wonderful
experience.
But I digress, paramount was the bus to
Portsmouth to coincide with the ferry
departure as I had an invitation to spend
five days with friends on the Isle of
Wight.
Sorted – or so I thought. With my
small travelling bag and ticket in
hand, I queued on the appointed
day at the extremely busy but well
organised Victoria Bus Station. When
the Portsmouth bus arrived, I put my
luggage in the hold and climbed aboard.
The tickets were checked after we had
taken our seats and when the supervisor
had finished, he singled me out and said
I was on the wrong bus. “Please remove
your baggage from the compartment
and wait for the next one,” the nononsense
voice said.
As a rookie traveller at this time, I did as
requested without question. Re-joining
the appropriate queue, I waited then
repeated the process. On this second
bus there appeared to be a private group
booking and so I was once again thrown
off as they had priority for the number of
seats available.
By this time I was not sure whether I
would meet the ferry originally confirmed
to my friends. With steely resolve and
rising anger, I clambered on to the third
bus and sat with my bag on my lap. The
atmosphere on the bus was hostile to
this stranger who would not relinquish
her luggage. Many had brought their
fish and chips onboard permeating the
air with a heavy vinegar smell as they
consumed their lunch and washed it
down with too much beer. This was truly
one of the worst journeys I have ever
experienced.
At our destination, I leapt off and headed
for the gang plank. The ferry was almost
full and I stood on deck in the drizzle all
the way to Ryde. Luckily my friends had
waited for a second ferry. Prior to mobile
phones, there had been no way I could
let them know of my delayed departure.
Contrary to the unpleasant beginning, I
spend a wonderful week on the island -
more about that another time.
WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND L.J.
EDWARDS?
LJ Edwards is a family run business
started in 1987 by my mum (Liz) and
my stepfather (John) LJ.
The company originally ran from
Amberstone in Hailsham and then
Hellingly Hospital before moving to
Hailsham town where it resided until
2018 when Liz and John retired. We
then bought the business from them
and relocated to our coach yard in
Polegate.
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED
THEN?
Until 2006 I dipped in and out of
the industry. I passed my coach
driving test in 1987 as part of a 21st
Birthday gift from mum and drove
for the firm on and off for several
years. However, I wasn’t in love with
coach driving; it’s long hours and lots
of them unsocial and I was young.
In 2006 though I thought I needed
to get a career going and asked if
there was a foothold in the business.
Fortunately for me, the office
manager had just left so I became
the trainee… the rest as they say
is history. Along the way I passed
my operator exams which allow me
to operate coaches and as already
mentioned we bought the business
last year.
WHAT’S THE COMPANY
PHILOSOPHY?
We haven’t changed anything from
the original really, yes computers
now run the show but the original
manta of good customer service,
value for money and a quality
product still stand.
LJ Edwards has a fantastic name
within the industry of coaching and
with the exceptionally hard work
that the team of staff put in it also
enjoys the same reputation with
the clear majority of our customers.
The ladies in the office go above
and beyond to help our customers
get what they want. We sell coach
holidays and we want you to relax
from the taxi pick at your front
door until the drop off several days
later. Your money is safe as we are
bonded, currently by International
passenger protection – a bit like
ATOL or ABTA although this is a
coach operator product.
SO TELL ME ABOUT THE COACH
HOLIDAYS YOU RUN.
Primarily we book quality 4-star
hotels around the UK that offer
something a little bit different. A
few years ago, we took a leap that
our customers wanted a little more
than a bucket and spade coach
holiday and chips with every meal,
so we contacted a couple of agents
to see if we could dip our toes into
the 4 star hotel market. At the time
this was almost unprecedented.
We booked 6 hotels our first year
and we’ve never looked back. The
market has caught us up and now
4-star hotels are commonplace in
coach holiday brochures, so we are
18 GOLDEN TIMES MAGAZINE JULY/AUGUST 2019

now looking at new initiatives. This
is why we recently spent a cool £1.2
million on 4 new coaches. 2 coaches
specifically for the holiday market and
2 coaches for our usual work. It’s a big
decision but we want to try and push on
and keep ourselves ahead of the rest.
We also want our customers to enjoy
all the additional features new coaches
bring.
THE NEW COACHES LOOK LOVELY
HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?
We wanted something modern but with
a twist. The coaches we have purchased
are on a familiar chassis to what we
know but the body is bespoke built by a
company in Spain.
Inside we have Wi-Fi, 3-point seat
belts, USB charging at every seat, very
spacious toilet and an electric hand
dryer, there are lights built into the
steps that help you see in the dark and
electric destination boards. We are very
happy with them. If you’re interested
in booking a day trip or holiday with
us then look at the ad below, view the
website or call the office and we will do
what we can to help.
What you can expect from a
holiday with L.J. Edwards
HOW TO COMBAT INCONTINENCE THIS SUMMER
HEALTH ADVICE FROM ANGELA BIRNIE AND SUZIE VENN
For the majority of people summer is a time to enjoy the
outdoors and let your hair down, however, for women who
struggle to control their bladder, the thought of summer can
bring on a lot of anxiety. We asked two of Sussex’s leading
female Urologists what their tops tips are to help women who
are experiencing this.
Suzie Venn, Urologist at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital,
said: “Urinary incontinence is the unintentional loss of urine, a
problem which is estimated to affect one in six adults. It can be
difficult to discuss urinary symptoms openly, but it is important
for women to speak out, seek advice and take control of their
bladder.
“Broadly speaking, there are two types of urinary incontinence:
stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence
usually occurs when the bladder is under pressure by physical
activity, such as sneezing, coughing and laughing. Pregnancy
and childbirth can also cause this form of incontinence. Urge
incontinence is when you have a sudden and strong need to
urinate, which is then followed by an involuntary loss of urine.
This can occur at any time, however, it is more common as you
age.
“To understand what type of incontinence you are suffering
from, it’s best to book an appointment with your GP, who can
review your symptoms and run a couple of routine tests to check
there is no sign of infection. In some cases, you can however
25% OFF
have a combination of both incontinence issues.”
Angela Birnie, Urologist at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital,
added: “Depending on what your ability is to control your
bladder, a lot of cases of incontinence can be resolved through
various lifestyle changes. If you are experiencing incontinence, I
recommend the following tips:
• Cut down on caffeine – Food and drink which contains
a lot of caffeine, such as chocolate, tea and coffee is one of the
main triggers of an overactive bladder.
• Avoid certain alcohol – If you are at a BBQ this summer
try and avoid certain drinks. Alcohol which is high in acidity, such
as white wine can irritate the bladder and make leaks and other
incontinence symptoms worse.
• Stay hydrated – It is important to stay hydrated all year
round, but it is particularly important in the summer during the
hot weather. Many people with urinary incontinence think it is
better to restrict their fluid intake, however dehydration can
irritate your bladder and make your incontinence worse.
• Lose weight and eat a healthy diet – Being overweight
means you are more likely to weaken your pelvic floor muscles
and experience problems with incontinence. Try and avoid
foods containing a lot of salt and choose a fresh salad instead.
• Exercise – Certain exercises can be extremely beneficial
and can help prevent leaks. Try various pelvic floor exercises that
will strengthen the muscles around your bladder.
• Don’t smoke – Smoking causes chronic coughing,
which can damage the muscles of the pelvic floor and weaken
your bladder.”
Suzie Venn and Angela Birnie host weekly clinics at Nuffield
Health Chichester Hospital.
Mrs Venn is associated with UROLINK, a charity which is
improving urological care in developing countries, such as
Africa. In her spare time, Mrs Venn enjoys sailing and is training
to complete the Fastnet Sailing Race in August.
Miss Birnie is also a keen sports woman and has a particular
interest in netball. To book an appointment with either of the
LIVING THE ALEXANDER WAY OF LIFE
You may think this invitation is to make you feel comfortable.
This may not always be the case. I have been giving this some
thought whilst looking for a set of new easy garden chairs and
table for our patio.
We spend much of our waking lives in a chair. We end up
sitting in all sorts of chairs throughout the day, whether they are
in kitchens, living rooms, offices, schools, waiting rooms, cars,
buses, movies or restaurants. We touch chairs with our whole
bodies, yet we know little about them and their effects on us,
physically and mentally. The chair shapes our ideas about status
and honour, comfort and order, beauty and efficiency, discipline
and relaxation. The design is constantly being revised as new
ideas from the field of ergonomics come to light and newer
ideas also arise from holistic health approaches, which advocate
the body and mind working as one.
So what does the perfect chair look like? Well no manufacturer
has ever been able to make the perfect chair. This could be
because the body is inherently unstable, which makes the
perfect chair unattainable. However, bodies were here first,
so we could argue that chairs should respond to bodies and,
therefore, because bodies move frequently and are “unstable”,
chairs should accommodate that movement.
Part of the problem is almost certainly the postural habits we
adopt in sitting. We have got so used to leaning back in chairs
that the torso muscles get weakened. It is entirely possible to sit
on the edge of a chair, if we wish, and be able to release tension
in the body, but we are not used it and we assume that it’s not
comfortable. Sitting is actually hard work, whether sitting well,
“ The Metal Door”
by Susan Davidson
“Please take a seat”
by Liz Jeffries
or not so well, as the pressure on the spinal
discs is thirty per cent greater when sitting
than standing. Those who squat regularly,
such as in African and Asian populations,
report far less compression of the spine than
Europeans. However, we usually start out able to
squat, toddlers do it brilliantly, but we gradually lose this ability,
mainly because we discover chairs to sit on!
My experience with the Alexander Technique has taught me
the importance of the mind/body working together. We should
be looking at our chairs in the same “holistic” way, i.e., not just
whether the seat is soft or hard, or tall or short for your feet to
reach the ground (something I always have to look for!) but does
your head droop in the chair? Does it push your head forward so
your chest caves in? Are your eyes forced to look too far up or
down? Is the chest rounded forward? Is the weight of the head
rotating back and down? Creating more length from head to
foot makes more space for the joints making movement easier.
So, if you have to sit (and of course we do) give it a little thought.
I shall be doing just that as I ease myself into my new patio chair.
sitting!). It can help with conditions involving pain, posture,
The door shut, it sounded metallic, like it was heavy, I remember
that. Then I was put down on a bed. That felt metallic too, just like
I was lying on the bed springs. The metal door shut again with a
loud clank. I opened my eyes. I couldn’t see anything at first, but
it was not total darkness, there was a chink of light coming under
the door. Everything hurt, my chest, I didn’t seem able to draw in
breath, I wanted to shout out. I thought I did, but I heard no sound.
My head ached. Darkness pain and despair enveloped me. Some
vestige of the desire to live must have washed over me, I had to get
out of here.
Slowly, painfully I eased myself off the bed and laying on the floor
I edged to the chink of light under the door. It took so long, the
door seemed to get further and further away. The floor was so hard
and cold. Finally, I could just get my fingers under the gap. I felt
something long and thin. It moved. I had an awful thought. maybe
it’s a rat’s tail. I was so tired. I had this strange feeling of letting go
of everything. I felt life slipping away right through to the tips of
my fingers.
There was a sound. I couldn’t identify it. I was in a warm soft
cocoon. The same sound came again. Ah my Mum! “Wake up
sleepy head I have bought you a cup of tea” she said, straightening
my bed covers. The sun was shining through the curtains I was
home in my lovely bedroom. There was my Mum standing there,
smiling, in her pretty blue summer dress. She looked so beautiful,
she was saying to me “Maybe you might like a shower later, your
hair looks like rats’ tails, your plait has come undone “Oh Mum, I
am so glad to be home I had an awful dream” I said. “You are bound
to for a while my love, that was such a bad, terrifying accident”
replied my Mum. I looked at her knowing that it had all been
terrible for her too. I remembered the long hours she had sat by my
side at the hospital.
The accident filled my thoughts again. I had been leaning against
the wall outside the supermarket. It so happened so fast. A lorry
reversed at speed trapping me hard against the wall. People
screamed or was it me. A red wall of pain hit me between the eyes.
I was in hospital a long time, I had extensive injuries mainly to
my chest and legs. Time stretched into a routine of pain, drips,
injections, all the hospital stuff. Unreal somehow. However, I am
home now and getting stronger every day. “We cracked it together
didn’t we Mum “I said “help me out of bed and I will go and have
that shower and wash my hair”
THE CREAM TEA, A CLOTTED HISTORY...
“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated
to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” - Henry James
What could be more English than
a cream tea? After a gentle seaside
(or countryside) stroll, what better
way to treat yourself than with this
delicacy? But who can we thank
for coming up with this culinary
delight?
The origins of the cream tea are
shrouded in the mists of time
and you’ll probably find a dozen
different stories about where it
was first served. There is evidence
that there was a tradition of eating
bread topped with cream and jam
in Devon during the 11th century!
It’s claimed that the dish was
invented by monks in Tavistock
who had been given cream, bread
and fruit preserves as a reward
for rebuilding the Benedictine
Abbey by the earl of Devon. The
combination of these ingredients
were so popular, the monks
continued to serve the dish to
travellers.
It’s not until the 20th century
however that the phrase “cream
tea” with its modern meaning
entered our language. There are
recorded uses of the phrase dating
back to the 1930s.
In the west country, there is some
controversy as to whether the
cream (which must of course
be clotted, never whipped, and
heaven forbid it should be squirted
out of a can!)goes on top of, or
underneath the jam. In Devon, it’s
cream first, in Cornwall the jam.
Apparently getting this the wrong
way around can be frowned upon
by aficionados. In the interest of
scientific balance, I tried half a
scone using each method. To be
truthful, I can’t see that it makes
a great deal of difference myself.
Both were delicious, but I found it
generally easier to put cream on top
of the jam, so I’d go Cornish, just
don’t tell them in Torquay!
TRICIAS COLUMN:
HOLD YOUR SHED UP HIGH
It was my birthday recently dear readers,
and at my age, one doesn’t like to make
a song and dance about it. I’d rather not
be reminded about how long it is since I
was 21.
Nevertheless, my family told me they’d
organised a little gathering to celebrate.
Fairly recently, one of my children has
acquired a beach hut, and it was decided
(presumably in a fit of optimism) that the
weather was going to be kind and that
we should have the party at the hut in
question.
I know this may surprise you, given that
you all know what an exciting life I lead,
but I’d never been in a beach hut before.
I’d always felt rather immune to their
charms, I mean, it’s just a shed on some
shingle, isn’t it?
I was assured that a lot of work had
gone into the hut. My son assured me
that hours of sweat and toil had gone
into painting the thing, and scouring
charity shops for suitable furniture and
accessories. I was promised a bijou,
comfortable, vintage-style sanctuary-bythe-sea.
I was still not convinced.
In today’s connected world, who would
want to spend time in a glorified wendy
house with no electricity or running
water? How would the youngsters cope
with no Wi-Fi? What if it rained? We’d all
be pretty cramped inside it wouldn’t we?
The day arrived and the weather was
fine, perfect for sitting in a deck chair
in fact. Windbreaks were erected,
barbeques were lit, suncream was
applied, cold drinks were poured, and
we settled down to enjoy ourselves.
It was a delight. Kites were flown,
frisbees were thrown, fresh air was
absorbed, singed sausages were
consumed and a marvellous time was
had by all. Other than the fact we
listened to the Beatles via a new-fangled
wireless speaker instead of an actual
wireless, it could have been 1969 rather
than 2019. A proper, traditional family
day by the sea. From my deckchair, I
could watch the world go by with my
family all around me without a care in the
world. All of my reservations were blown
away by the sea breeze.
If you have a friend or family member
with a beach hut, I’d recommend
pestering them into inviting you down
there for an afternoon. You could even
perhaps combine the experience with
one of the cocktails from page 30!
Once you’ve recharged your batteries
with an afternoon in the sun (with or
without cocktails) and you’re full of beans
and looking for your next adventure,
have a look at the great range of
activitites and days out on the next few
pages, there’s bound to be something
there to keep you busy until I’m back in
September!
Have a fabulous summer!
