WELCOME TO THE ADULT LEARNING SPRING & SUMMER 2019 PROSPECTUS 

The beginning of a new year is often a time to reflect and 

make plans. We hope the NEW Spring and Summer 2019 

courses excite and inspire you to join us. 

In 2018 The Learning and Skills Service assisted thousands 

of people onto adult learning courses, apprenticeships 

and into work and this year we want to help even 

more residents. 

This prospectus has a focus on skills for work with many 

of the courses designed to introduce you to sectors with 

employment opportunities in our region. If you’re unsure 

about committing to a long programme of study why not 

try one of our FREE (bite-sized) introductory courses in 

education and childcare; health and social care or leisure 

and customer service. These are designed to provide an 

understanding of the sector and about the roles available. 

If it’s the right career path for you it’s easy to progress to 

a higher level qualification and gain industry recognised 

accreditation. 

In addition, we have a continuing programme of 

languages, brand new science and ecology classes 

and art and wellbeing courses including, bookbinding, 

patchwork quilting, meditation and mindfulness... 

There’s plenty to explore. 

There are many ways to access courses, with 10 adult 

learning centres located across Northumberland. We also 

offer a FREE digital skills programme for residents in rural 

areas providing classes in your local community building. 

Our IT lecturers bring equipment and expertise and create 

bespoke courses depending on the needs of each group. If 

you would like to know more, please get in touch. 

With more than 98% of our learners recommending our 

courses to friends and family we’re sure you’ll have a great 

time, increase your skills and meet like-minded people.

Making your 

studies affordable 

The Learning and Skills Service 

continue to offer great value for 

money and we constantly assess 

our programmes to keep your fees 

as low as possible. 

19+ LEARNER LOANS 

Advanced learner loans are Government Funded 

and provided to help learners with their fees. 

It’s easy to apply, doesn’t take your household 

income into account and doesn’t involve a 

credit check. Repayments won’t start until 

you are earning over £25,000 a year. 

BURSARY FUND 

The fund is used to support learners with 

travel expenses, childcare, additional learning 

support and in cases of extreme hardship. 

Additional support can also be provided to 

help with additional learning resources or 

other classroom support. 

ARMED FORCES 

If you have left the British Armed Forces within 

the last ten years after completing four or 

more years of service or have been medically 

discharged after completing basic training you 

are entitled to full funding if you’re studying 

your first full level 2 or 3 qualification. 

FLEXIBLE PAYMENTS 

Lots of our courses are FREE and we have 

flexible payment plans in place if you can’t pay 

all your fees upfront. These apply to all courses 

valued at £150 or more.

The Lindisfarne Adult Learning 

Centre at Alnwick continues 

to blossom with a range of 

new courses, new services and 

established groups - all sharing 

a space at the heart of the 

community. 

Citizens Advice 

Northumberland is now 

based on the ground floor of 

the building and welcomes 

residents who want free, 

confidential and impartial 

advice on any issues affecting 

people’s lives, for example the 

team will also work with the 

Learning and Skills Service to 

support residents around the 

launch of Universal Credit in 

Northumberland.

A rich ecology for explorers 

A group of enthusiastic learners have been gathering 

research for a national database as part of their 

Ecology of Northumberland course. 

“THIS COURSE IS FOR 

NATURE LOVERS AND 

ENTHUSIASTS WHO 

REALLY WANT TO 

ENGAGE WITH THE 

NATURAL WORLD AND 

MAKE A DIFFERENCE.” 

The seven week programme 

began in the classroom moving 

on to a series of field trips to 

Kielder Wildwood, Cresswell on 

the coast and Ford Moss - 

exploring a different habitat 

each week. 

Learners get hands-on practical 

experience as they explore the 

environment, learning how to 

identify and record species. 

The data is then uploaded onto 

the Biological Records System 

based at the Hancock Museum 

in Newcastle. 

John Hartstone, biology 

lecturer said: “I wanted to 

introduce the learners to the 

amazing habitats of 

Northumberland. The course 

is a practical one and each 

student has collated research 

to be used to inform nature 

conservation.” 

The group has really embraced 

the first course and they are 

looking forward to progressing 

to a more detailed study of 

key habitats in the springtime. 

We’ll be exploring everything 

from rocky shores and dunes 

to mires and meadows.

FEELING THE LEARNER 

LOVE IN BEDLINGTON 

Informative learner feedback 

is helping create a rich and 

varied timetable at the Adult 

Learning Centre on Jubilee 

Terrace, Bedlington. The centre, 

next to the library, is home to a 

dedicated Arts and Wellbeing 

space. 

Each Tuesday it transforms 

into a dressmaking studio, 

where students reclaim and 

upcycle fabrics, breathing 

new life into vintage clothing 

and finding new and exciting 

uses for fabric. 

On Wednesdays local artist 

Joanne McGarry enthuses and 

challenges her creative cohort 

to produce watercolours, oil 

paintings, charcoal sketches 

and pastels in her level 2 

mixed media arts class. 

New to the studio on 

Thursdays, we’re enrolling now 

for a beginners pottery class 

which will offer the opportunity 

to produce hand-crafted pinch 

pots, tiles and bowls and learn 

techniques such as coiling, 

press moulding, slipcasting 

and glazing. 

The new classes sit along the well established 

languages programme which this year include: 

Introduction to French and Italian, Japanese 

and Spanish Culture and Conversation and for 

those pushed for time - a basic day intensive in 

French, Spanish and German. 

For those wanting to get back into the 

workforce Skills for Work Courses available in 

the spring and summer at Bedlington include: 

Health Care Assistant - Paediatric Support 

Level 3, Introduction to Childcare, Introduction 

to Customer Service and Retail; Food Hygiene 

- Award in Food Safety Level 2 and Functional 

Maths and English.

enhance your current skills by helping you to 

improve your confidence, motivation, mindset 

and communication skills to prepare you for

RURAL DIGITAL 

PROJECT 

Our digital programme is aimed 

at providing those living in rural 

communities with the chance 

to learn more about technology 

and improve digital skills. 

Dedicated lecturers for each 

region are currently delivering 

courses in Slaley, Bellingham, 

Seahouses, Wooler and Belford. 

The four week programme 

introduces a range of digital 

skills perfect for the beginner. 

You’ll get help with how to 

use a computer or tablet, 

get online, set up an email 

account, search for information 

and fill in online forms. 

This practical course can 

teach you the digital skills to 

access online services such as 

Facebook and covers online 

shopping and staying safe 

online. 

The course is open to groups 

of eight or more that have 

access to a community 

building. Groups can progress 

to more specialised courses 

to develop skills such as 

using your phone or digital 

camera, using Whatsapp or to 

nationally recognised awards 

in computer skills.

How we support you 

LEARNER SUPPORT 

Our dedicated Learning Support team can help if you have learning difficulties, 

disabilities, long-term conditions or you feel you’re struggling. They can help you 

access support in the classroom, with specialist software, note takers, interpreters 

or adapted equipment. Speak to us if you would like support. 

Dyslexia support 

We can offer advice on learning 

strategies, learning support sessions and 

a brief screening or exam assessment – 

speak to us at the start of your course. 

Sign language and lip reading 

Our British Sign Language and lip 

reading courses are available across 

Northumberland and are open to learners aged 

16-plus. British Sign Language courses have 

a small fee, but these can be waived in some 

circumstances. Lip reading is provided free to 

all learners. We have signing and translating 

lecturers available if required (see pages 22-23). 

Bursaries 

There are financial bursary schemes for 

16-18 year olds and discretionary learner 

support funds for 19+. Schemes can 

help with the costs of learning including fees, 

materials and resources, travel, childcare and 

other costs. 

Financial and childcare support 

If you have a low income, ask us about 

financial assistance. We may be able 

to help you with the cost of travel, course 

materials or other items to support you through 

our Learner Support Fund. We can also help 

towards registered childcare. 

Counselling service 

We can provide support if you’re facing 

a tough time outside the classroom or 

workplace. If you are a learner with us and have 

been referred by our Learner Support Service, 

counselling is free. All our counsellors are fully 

qualified members of the British Association for 

Counselling and Psychotherapy. 

KEEPING 

YOU SAFE 

The service aims to make sure you’re 

safe and free from harm. 

We have detailed safeguarding 

policies and procedures. We work 

with you to help you develop 

the skills that will help you take 

responsibility for your own safety. 

You can report any safeguarding 

concern via our safeguarding portal 

tootoot or by reporting to our 

Safeguarding Champions. Our team 

of Safeguarding Officers will always 

act to ensure you are safe. 

English and maths support 

If you are struggling with English and 

maths talk to your lecturer who can 

refer you to one of our classes. 

Free courses start throughout the year, 

so support can be put into place quickly. 

Student union 

We are registered with the National 

Union of Students and students 

can buy an NUS card that offers a huge 

range of discounts.

CAREERS GUIDANCE TEAM 

EMPLOYABILITY SUPPORT 

The Careers Guidance team is an independent 

team within the Learning and Skills Service. 

The team are qualified, experienced and 

impartial Careers Advisers here to support 

young people aged 16-18 who are not in 

education, employment or training. We can help 

explore and find opportunities for progression. 

We can talk about courses, apprenticeships, 

traineeships, supported internships and 

supported employment services in your area; 

plan a route to the career you want; help you 

to improve your job search skills and help 

with benefits. 

We cover all of Northumberland and can 

arrange to meet you in a town close to 

your home.

Check whether you have to pay the standard fee or 

you are entitled to a free place. There are different 

funding opportunities to support you. 

We can offer flexible plans for course fees of 

£150 or more, but may consider other exceptional 

circumstances.

course or fully refunded. 

Course fees don’t need to be a barrier to learning.
