Master's Message

Dear prospective students,

I am Professor Victor Tan, the Hall Master of

Temasek Hall (TH).

First of all, congratulations to you for the

successful admission to NUS, one of the best

universities internationally. You will soon find

out that, other than the academic programs

offered by your home faculties, there is a

whole range of activities and opportunities

that will enrich your university education. One

of them is to live in a Hall of Residence. Other

than providing convenience to attend classes,

the Hall experience will also build your characters and hone your soft skills to

become a well-rounded and well balanced student. Hall is a place for many

friendships to be built. It will provide an important platform to support you

socially, academically and emotionally throughout your study in NUS.

This booklet gives you a glance at the many aspects of the hall life in TH. Hope that

it will provide you with additional information to make a decision in your hostel

application.

Hope to see you at Temasek Hall !

Hello Incoming Freshies!

president's Message

I am Jun Jie, president of Temasek Hall for the

20/21 AY.

In this booklet, you will be able to find all

sorts of useful information regarding the Hall.

Our EC committee has spent a lot of effort on

it so I urge everyone to give it a good read!

This year will be an incredibly tough year for

all of us because of the COVID-19 situation

that took us by surprise. Nevertheless, in

Temasek Hall, we promise that we will do our

best to ensure a fulfilling and enriching

experience to every Temasekian.

A fun and exciting journey awaits every freshie that comes into TH and I can

promise you that it will be the one of the best decisions you will make in your

university life.

So come, and experience the Temasek Family for yourself!

Stay safe and healthy everyone!

My experience is pretty much on the extreme end of the spectrum

of a typical Hall resident. I joined 11 CCAs (4 sports, 5 committees, 1

OCIP, and 1 dance production) as a Freshman, which is NOT

RECOMMENDED FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! It’s crazy right? Yeah it

was! Did I manage to make time for all of them? Not really! I tried

the best that I could, but everyone only has 24 hours in a day. I had

to make time for my studies and sleep as well! While it was indeed

a memorable and fulfilling experience for me, I really would

recommend taking up at most 6 CCAs.

Commit but DON'T Overcommit! It’s very easy to succumb to the

Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) and fall into the seemingly bottomless

pit that are Hall activities. You’ll find yourself joining CCAs (sports,

culTHural, or committees) for the camaraderie and the fulfilling,

memorable experiences that they provide, but be sure not to bite

off more than you can chew! You know yourself best, what you

can or can’t do – what you can make time for and what you can’t!

If you do find yourself stressing out and struggling to make time to

contribute to a CCA, perhaps it’s time you drop one or two CCAs!

Mental health is wealth!

Manage your time effectively, between studies, committee work, and/or sports, and SLEEP! Sleep is

very important and if you’re sleeping 3 hours a day that’s really not sustainable and you’ll find

yourself getting less productive as the days pass. Dedicate time to completing your tutorials and

keeping on track with your lectures (unless you want to find yourself trying to LAST MINUTE

CLUTCH). Remember that you are a student resident, a student before you are a resident!

My time in TH has been extremely fulfilling and eventful. In Y1, I was full

of energy and excitement to try out as many things and ended up with

8/9 hall commitments after going for MOST interviews. My schedule

was jam packed with regular sports and dance training after classes

and the occasional committee meetings after. You have to have the

discipline to keep up with your studies while also not neglect your

assigned tasks. However, I've had a terrific roommate (He's on this page

too!), my friendly neighbours and friends to keep me motivated and

passionate for whatever I was in. My roommate and I made sure to

keep each other on track. Late nights in hall are definitely a

commonplace but can be avoidable if you plan out your time (I HIGHLY

ADVISE THIS).

In Y2, I took up a leadership role as TGreen head. I chose fewer

committees & sports to join as after Y1, I knew what I enjoyed more.

Being a leader entails a whole other spectrum of responsibilities and

requires a whole lot of planning.

This meant that even though I am not physically exhausted as i was in Y1, I was mentally drained from

taking care of my committee. However I've definitely learnt to cope better with studies and hall this

year and the support from friends got me through tough periods.

Friends are very important in my hall journey and they have helped me get through the most

arduous parts of uni life. I do have to say that we mustn’t forget to give back to this place that has

and will give countless memories and experiences to us. Being a student, studies will indisputably

be our priority but as hall residents, showing our commitment is part of our responsibility. And as

with both studies and hall, you will get back however much you give. You are never alone in this

place we call home so enjoy everything that is Temasek.
