WELCOME TO
Sheboygan
County
Like many cities, villages, lakes and
rivers throughout Wisconsin, the name
Sheboygan means “passage or waterway
between the lakes.” Some historians
believe it to be Ojibwa, while other
authorities speculate that it derived from
a Chippewa word. Whatever its origin,
the name is as unique and interesting as
the region it covers.
Originally established in 1838,
Sheboygan County grew and prospered as
immigrants from Germany, the Netherlands
and Ireland established homes, farms and
businesses here and later, Greeks, Croatians,
Hmong and Hispanics were attracted to
strong work ethic remain the backbone of
Sheboygan County’s economy.
Everyday living throughout
Sheboygan County is fairly quiet and laid
From a nationally renowned art museum,
Urban Living
For those who love to be in the thick
of things, Sheboygan’s urban living options
put you right in the mix of excellent dining,
the farmers’ market, concert events, specialty
shops, the new arts & culture space and the
renowned John Michael Kohler Arts Center.
Plus, Lake Michigan is only blocks away
with four miles of sand beach.
Like many communities,
Sheboygan has refurbished historic
factories and warehouses into loft and
modern industrial-style apartments.
The Jung and Leverenz families
played an important role in the
development of Sheboygan’s economy,
operating successful shoe manufacturing
businesses for decades. The Jung building,
listed on the National Register of Historic
Places, was redeveloped in 1992 into
53 apartments. Refurbished in 1992,
the four-story Leverenz building offers

one- and two-bedroom apartments and
18 indoor parking stalls.
Another factory building, the
historic Garton Toy Factory, has also been
converted to modern apartments. Garton
was once the largest wheeled toy factory
in the world. Nearly every child in
Sheboygan had a Garton wagon, sled,
tricycle, scooter or pedal car.
Urban living in Sheboygan also

beautifully refurbished homes, many
with unique and classic features.
Cooler By the Lake
Natural beauty is something
we’re pretty proud of here in
Sheboygan County. Along with Lake
Michigan, Sheboygan County has more
than 30 bodies of water including lakes,
rivers and ponds.
The Lake Michigan shoreline in
Sheboygan County spans 26 miles. From
urban apartments and condos to beachfront
and bluff homes, the views of Lake
Michigan are stunning. Broughton Drive
along the lakefront is a busy thoroughfare
of activity for families, joggers and people
out walking with their four-legged pals.
Away from the Great Lake, there
are six lakes within the county that require
boating permits. A few of the lakes have
Sunday motor restrictions, which provide
a great day for some peaceful kayaking,
paddle boarding, sailing and swimming.
For those who want to be on the water,
there are a wide range of converted
cottages, condos and year-round homes
on the lakeshores and riverbanks
throughout the county.
Green Acres
There are an estimated 36,000
Sheboygan County residents who live in
rural areas, so if country living is your style,
this area has much to offer. You can reside
in a small village or way out in the country
away from it all.
The peaceful countryside of
Sheboygan County ranges from rolling

near the western edge of the county and
the Kettle Moraine State Forest area. The
landscape here is dotted with small lakes,
ponds and rivers. From a charming house
to a hobby farm (or larger), the options
are abundant.

peaceful privacy. Relax, and
enjoy the slower pace
of country living.
THE SPIRIT ON THE LAKE
From breathtaking views of
Lake Michigan’s expansive sandy beaches
to world-class sailing and premier charter

to offer.
The City of Sheboygan is ideally
situated between two large metropolitan
areas – Green Bay is one hour north and
Milwaukee is one hour south – both of which
have large international airports. Chicago
is only 2.5 hours away, and Madison is 110
miles to the southwest. So while big-city
amenities are easily accessible, the cost of

people here enjoy a “small-town” feel.
Sheboygan’s downtown
is in the midst of a revitalization project.
Many storefronts are open once again,
cool restaurants are thriving and a
variety of small, unique shops like
Relish Kitchen Store, Olivü 426, and
Freaktoyz Collectibles, have created
a shopping destination.
In 2017, the new City Green,
an arts and culture space was created
with proposed retail and living space
surrounding it. Amongst other cultural
events, free concerts are held every
Thursday night during the summer.
Throughout the city, you’ll

for generations have made a strong
investment in the area. Sheboyganites are
known for their work ethic and there is a
strong sense of community engagement.
One thing you’ll notice right away is that
people here are kind and friendly.
THE BREAKWATER LIGHTHOUSE
The iconic lighthouse of Sheboygan was built in 1915, although the city has been served
by a lighthouse since 1839. The skeletal steel pier-head tower was topped with a circular
parapet and lantern room. Only the tower remains today. Locals and visitors love walking
out to the landmark and
HISTORIC
HUB CITY
Plymouth, a little jewel of a city
teeming with lovely architectural treasures
and beautiful Cream City brick buildings,
is nestled on the Mullet River among the
rolling hills of the Kettle Moraine.
Originally called Ta-quit-qui-oc
(Crooked River) by the local Indians,
Plymouth was surveyed in 1835 by United
States engineers. Settlers trickled in, including
Isaac Thorp, who named the town after
Plymouth, Connecticut, in honor of the city
where his sweetheart had lived and died.
At the center of this historically
charming city is Mill Street, brimming
with quaint shops and boutiques offering
antiques, artwork, books, jewelry, musical
instruments, clothing and handmade crafts.
A unique feature of the downtown
is the collection of 25 building murals,
Kohler
A GARDEN COMMUNITY
The Village of Kohler was founded
as a model company town in 1900 when
Kohler Co., a worldwide leader in
plumbing products, built a plant at the
location. The company eventually became
a world-class hospitality destination,
boasting the 2017 Forbes Five-Star
hotel, The American Club.
Incorporated in 1912, the
village was originally called Riverside.
Walter J. Kohler, son of Kohler Co. founder
John Michael Kohler, envisioned the village
as a garden/industrial community. Artful

village with an emphasis on natural and
historic preservation and mindful design
for residential and commercial growth.
The village received botanic
in 2004 through the
American Public Gardens Association and
offers three different self-guided audio
tours of the gorgeous, meticulously
maintained village gardens.
From a community pool to tennis
and t-ball to soccer, Kohler has an active
recreation department and youth center.
And as a world-class resort destination,
there is always something going on, from
a renowned food and wine festival to an
entire weekend celebrating chocolate.
The Blind Horse Restaurant & Winery
merges a “Napa Valley Style” restaurant and
world-class winery in rustic elegance.
Nestled on Wood Lake, The Shops at
organic selection and many specialty shops,
cafés and boutiques. For all things “with child”,
Oostburg
BUILT ON A TRADITION
OF DUTCH HERITAGE
Located 7 miles from Sheboygan
and 40 miles north of Milwaukee is the
Village of Oostburg, which was settled
by Dutch immigrants in the 1840s. Stroll
through the quiet streets and you’ll quickly
notice many reminders of those early
settlers, including tulips, miniature windmills
and neat-as-a-pin homes and yards.
In 1873, local businessman Peter
Daane constructed and donated a depot
to the Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western
Railroad Company, and in just three years
Oostburg became a thriving railroad town
with a mill, grain elevator, lumberyard, post

various shops, including two general stores.
Today, Oostburg offers the best
of small-town living.
necessities at the Village Market Square
and at various local businesses. And good
restaurants, too. Patrons at Judi’s Place
enjoy a diverse menu (think hearty, homestyle
cooking) owing to Judi’s long family
history of Italian restaurateurs combined
with her late husband’s Greek heritage.
Country Store offering apple cider donuts,
fresh pies, apples, cider, wines, art and gifts.
Locals, visitors and bicyclist enthusiasts love
to stop by Kups Coffee & Ice Cream for
coffee drinks, smoothies, delectable treats,
refreshing ice cream, smiles and friendly,
down-home conversations.
For a community of its size,
Oostburg offers exceptional healthcare
facilities including a clinic, pharmacy,

massage therapists. It also has the highest
number per capita of quality tradesmen and
private contractors in Sheboygan County.
You’ll feel at home in Oostburg
if you’re drawn to a close-knit, familyfriendly
community. Every other summer,
on the second Friday in August, stop by
for AugustFest, the “biggest block party”
in the village. Local folks of all ages turn
out in droves to support the sports teams.
on the football or basketball team.
The trail is free and available for non-motorized sports including bicycling, roller blading,
Cedar Grove
A LITTLE DUTCH TREAT
If you drove along the eastern
shores of Lake Michigan and happened
upon Cedar Grove, it wouldn’t take long

has deep roots in Dutch heritage. The
full-sized replica windmill downtown is a
dead give-away for starters. Like its Dutch
cousin Oostburg just to the north, Cedar
Grove was settled by Dutch pioneers, who
established the village in the mid 1840s.
When a railroad line came through, the former

The town celebrates its Dutch
heritage at its hugely popular Holland
Fest held in Memorial Park. The two-day
celebration, held each July for nearly
70 years, features a two-hour parade,
street scrubbing, ethnic food, music and
costumes. Kids don their wooden shoes
for races and traditional Dutch dancing,
called Klompen Dancing. You must try an
Olie Bollen, a classic Dutch donut, but don’t
look for a beer. Holland Fest is one of the
largest “dry” festivals in Wisconsin.
Located in south central Sheboygan
State Highway 57, only 45 minutes north of
Milwaukee and 15 to 20 minutes from the
The village expanded to include a public
At 209 acres, Random Lake is the
second-largest lake in Sheboygan County
enjoy quality education in grades K-12
and beyond. There are nine public school
districts in the county, all of which have high
schools, middle schools and elementary
schools; Plymouth, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah,
Sheboygan Falls, Kohler, Howards Grove,
Random Lake, Cedar Grove-Belgium,
Oostburg, and Sheboygan. According to
the Wisconsin Knowledge & Concepts
Examination (WKCE), Sheboygan County’s
students well exceed state averages
for students receiving “advanced” and

social studies, science and language
arts. Additionally, Wisconsin students
are graduating from high school at the
highest rates in the nation.
Sheboygan Area School District
With 26 schools and an enrollment
of more than 10,000 students, the
Sheboygan Area School District is the
largest in the county. It offers a wide variety
of educational opportunities ranging from
4K to college courses. Seventy percent of
teachers hold a master’s degree or higher.
The school district is a 10-time
winner of the “What Parents Want Award”
for the qualities parents most look for in
a school system. Additionally, the district
has also consistently been ranked highly
in the nation by Expansion Management
magazine, a monthly business magazine
for executives of companies actively
looking for a place to expand or relocate.
Charter Schools
Driven by community demand,
the district has developed a variety of
specialized charter schools and unique
programs to meet the diverse learning
needs of children in our community. Charter
schools are independent public schools that
focus on personalized learning based on a
child’s interest, ability and learning style.
Home School
Sheboygan County has a strong
home school support network and there
are several state-wide organizations available
to assist home school families, and many
schools throughout Sheboygan County offer
extracurricular opportunities to home school
students such as sports, drama and music.
economy with numerous
corporate headquarters.
While there’s no dispute
that the county is one of the more
prominent manufacturing hubs in
the country, Sheboygan has created
employment foundations in other sectors
such as healthcare services and has
grown considerably in the business and
professional services sector as well.
Our largest employers are a mixture
of goods producers, service producers,
private-sector and government-owned
establishments. But we hang our hat on
FOUR
great
seasons
TO LOVE IT HERE
There is breathtaking beauty to
behold in Wisconsin’s four seasons. From
cooling off at Lake Michigan in the summer
to gliding through a lighted forest on skis
at night, there are plenty of ways to enjoy
every season in Sheboygan County.
The Beauty of Winter
The winters can seem long and
cold, but the best thing you can do is to

love. And that’s where you’re in luck. For
downhill ski and snowboard enthusiasts,
there are several ski hills within an hour’s
drive. For cross-country skiing, there are
trails in parks and golf courses throughout
the county. The classic and skate ski trails
in the Kettle Moraine State Forest in
Greenbush are excellent with loops ranging

after-work skis, you can turn on lights for
one loop. There are snowshoeing trails and
a sledding hill here and in numerous other
locations in the county.
Other popular cold-weather
activities include ice skating, sledding

Old Plank Trail is open to snowmobiles,
and the county trails that cross the
Sheboygan Marsh connect with a 228-mile
countywide trail system.
Throughout winter there are events
that make spirits bright. From Schnee Days
in Elkhart Lake to Main Street Memories
in Sheboygan Falls to annual Christmas
parades in many communities during the
holiday season, people here enjoy all that
winter has to offer.
A Salute to Spring
When spring arrives, we celebrate
Segue into Summer
Our summer weather is ideal.
We may have a few hot and humid days,
but it makes us appreciate Lake Michigan
more than ever and its “cooler near the
lake” effect! The beaches and lakeshore

and sailors cannot get out on the lake fast
enough. The piers are lined with people

The lake is a magnet, drawing paddle
boarders, surfers, kite and wind surfers
and swimmers and Broughton and
Lakeshore Drives are teeming with
dog-walkers, runners, bicyclists and
cars cruising the shore.
The inland lakes, beaches and
resorts
alike. Kayaks and canoes travel the miles
of rivers we have throughout the county.
Along with the beaches and water sport
options, Sheboygan is a world-class
golf destination with renowned courses
including Whistling Straits Golf Course,
Blackwolf Run Golf Course and The Bull
at Pinehurst Farms as well as a number

county. Golf leagues, volleyball, rugby,
softball and soccer teams are a great
way for newcomers to meet people
and develop friendships.

beach, picnics, parades, outdoor dining,
concerts and movies, sipping a beverage
at the tiki bar…ah yes, it’s summer
in Sheboygan County.
Fall Favorites
When the nights
get cooler and the days
grow shorter, the greens
of summer turn into brilliant red, yellow
and orange. Fall here is beautiful
and people venture out to enjoy the
breathtaking colors and crisp weather with
hikes in the Kettle Moraine State Forest.
Climbing the Parnell Tower to see the fall
foliage from above is a must! Motorcyclists,
bicyclists and cars tool along the winding,
wooded roads to take it all in.
If you ask what we’ve got planned
for Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the
answer is most likely football. We love the
Badgers and the Packers and the games
are on in almost any tavern.
Fall here also means hunting
season for both muzzleloader and gun.
Hunters are out looking for deer, turkey,
squirrels, duck, geese and other game
birds. If you venture out running or biking,
blaze orange apparel is a good idea.

has emerged as the Fresh Water Surf
times a year, Lake Michigan produces an
open water swell of 24 feet or better. For
those wanting a more leisurely experience,
our lakeshores are busy with standup
KEEPING THE
faith

church is one of the best ways to
meet people and become engaged in a
community. Sheboygan County is home
to many churches and many of those
congregations devote a great deal of time,

There are 11 Roman Catholic
churches in Sheboygan County (nearly
35 percent of the county population is
Roman Catholic). St. Clement’s Church
in the heart of Sheboygan offers two
Spanish Masses on Sundays. Holy Name
is Sheboygan’s most historic Catholic
church. More than 150 years old, it still
offers traditional Latin Mass on the
second and fourth Sunday of each
month. A large Hmong population
attends St. Peter Claver, while St. Cyril
and Methodius boasts a rich Slovenian
history with a summer picnic offering

There is a strong Protestant
representation in the county, almost evenly
split between mainline and evangelical.
The denominations and church styles vary
from traditional services to contemporary.

many Reformed, Christian Reformed and
Presbyterian churches, primarily in
Oostburg, Cedar Grove, Sheboygan Falls
and Sheboygan.
Many churches offer special
programs such as early childhood centers,
Bible study groups, adult day care for those
with dementia, senior groups, preschools,
welcome centers and more.
There is a small Jewish population
in Sheboygan County served by Beth El
Synagogue, which holds services throughout
the year in observance of Jewish holidays.
St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox
celebrated 110 years in 2016 and has a
fulltime priest holding services every Sunday.
Though they have a small congregation,
the church is beloved by the community,
especially for its popular Greek Fest each June.
Get Out of Town! Traveling to almost anything in Sheboygan County never takes much more than 20 minutes, tops.
But taking a trip to bigger cities for a special outing is a breeze too. Downtown Chicago? Only two hours away. Milwaukee
is less than an hour’s drive down Interstate 43 while Green Bay (yay Packers!) is less than an hour north. Madison is about
two hours away, but if you have the time, taking the back roads through the Horicon Marsh is a gorgeous alternative.
