LIFE In Your Opinion
“Since Aquis has shelved its plans for a casino, do you think the region
needs a big ticket tourism project. If so, what would you like to see?”
TONY WILLIAMSON
Broker/Owner
RE/MAX CAIRNS
Like a lot of Cairns people I was shocked
and saddened to see the announcement
that Aquis was not going to happen.
With Cairns in a real estate slumber since
2007, the whole industry looked forward
to Aquis and the flow-on effect that this
new development would have on the
region. The Cairns economy thrives on
tourism and development, and Aquis
ticked all the boxes in the quest for a
buoyant Cairns again.
What now? We need to push on and
show Cairns off to the world. If we can
encourage more private and/or public
investment in Cairns, we will all win.
VOX
POPS
ASHLEY BALDERSON
Director
STATUS PLUS
No one could argue that a major tourism
project would not provide a significant
economic boost for the region.
The international focus it would provide
would re-ignite the attraction to our
region and, given world events and our
dollar, it would seem that we are well
placed for this to happen.
However, some of us in the business
community have been saying for some
time that the vacuum created by the
seemingly perpetual re-announcement
of the various mega projects has a
negative effect on local development and
business.
Whilst we would love to see the skyline
pointed with some tower cranes again,
it is the local development projects that
are keeping the economy moving. The
smaller more modest projects that are
‘real’ don’t seem to get the attention,
and whilst everyone is captivated by
the romantic notion that one of these
mega projects might happen we are
not providing the support for local
development opportunities.
HEATHER GHIDELLA
MYSTYLE HOMES
Our region would benefit from not only
tourism projects, but any significant
construction project that would generate
business growth opportunities and jobs.
We certainly have licence for additional
infrastructure investment in our region.
For example, The Australia Infrastructure
Plan released this year highlights that
Cairns has been recognised as one of
Australia’s fastest-growing regional
economies and that all levels of
government prioritise infrastructure
investment in regional growth centres,
and particularly highlighted Cairns. It is
projected that by 2031, our region will
be one of the top 10 regional economies
in Australia with $14 billion of gross
regional product, which will create
pressure without further investment.
We are looking forward to seeing the
positive changes coming from projects
like the $50 million Cairns Aquarium,
which is expected to attract over 500,000
visitors per year, and the Mount Peter
Edmonton Business & Industry Park
development, which will be a master
planned employment area of 212
hectares, with the potential to generate
approximately 2804 jobs.
with Michelle Stacpoole
OVER
I’ll admit that I’m a technological dinosaur.
In today’s tech savvy world of infants with
mini iPads and grandma’s posting to YouTube,
I’m the equivalent of a MS Dos file saved to a
floppy disk – so obsolete the possibility of an
upgrade is decades too late.
Sure, I know the basics, but start talking about
cool new apps or accessing shared document
drives and my eyes will glaze over as I start
playing elevator music in my head.
So when I read that last year ESPN in the
United States televised a college eSports
competition with a prize purse of $450,000
USD to the winning team, my glazy eyes
boggled. That was of course once I discovered
what eSports actually was.
Turns out it’s professional video gaming.
People play each other online. Like in Pacman
and stuff. For some pretty big money it seems.
Earlier this year Superdata (a research company
that provides monthly analysis to the gaming
industry) released a report that valued the
total eSports revenue at $892 million, with a
projection for it to exceed $1.1 billion by 2018,
and that the worldwide eSports audience has
reached over 200 million viewers per year.
Wait. What? Audience?
Yep. That’s people on their computer watching
people on their computer play other people on
their computer. ALL. DAY. LONG. To me it
sounds like a heap of kids with no screen time
boundaries.
But it’s not just kids. Market analysis indicates
that the average age of a gamer in the United
States is 31, with women making up 48%
of gamer audiences. Please somebody…
anybody… these girls need a night out!
Sure, video games have been around for
decades. I remember playing Space Invaders at
the video shop and trying to beat the best score
of a dude with the initials JWC. Now it’s a
whole different game.
And it’s called League of Legends.
League of Legends, or LoL as it’s known in
the industry, is now a college sport. It’s right
up there with football and hockey. Rank
generalizations aside, gamer geeks with remote
controls can now stand equally with the football
jocks. There are university scholarships for
the best gamers. There are dedicated coaches.
They have practices and post-game debriefs.
There are even uniforms involved.
Stop it. This is serious stuff.
Developed by game powerhouse Riot Games in
2009, LoL has over 67 million serious players
a month, with over 30 million viewers per
day tuning in to watch the big matches. PER
DAY. It’s big business. In March this year Riot
appeared on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to
Work For List for the second year in a row. At
least they’re happy gamers.
In South Korea, gaming is widely accepted
as a national past time. Professional gamers
allegedly practice 15 hours a day. Those
that achieve elite status are paid six figure
salaries and date supermodels. Couples go
to game clubs. They fill stadiums to watch
championships on big screens. ESports is epic.
It’s not all fun and gaming however. There is a
serious downside to the world of eSports.
According to Reuters, in South Korea 10% of
children aged between 10 and 19 are Internet
gaming addicts. That’s over 680,000 kids. In
a country where two thirds of the population
owns a smart phone, internet addiction is
becoming an epidemic.
In order to combat the increase in youth
gaming addiction, the South Korean
government introduced a “Shutdown Law” in
2011 blocking gamers under the age of 16 from
playing between midnight and 6am. Reports
on the success of the law are mixed, as many
youths get around the curfew by logging into
gaming accounts owned by adults. Clever little
tackers. I’m not surprised though considering
my four year old cracked my iPhone passcode
in three attempts.
Gaming in our house has not yet reached
these epic proportions. This may be due in
part to my technological impediment, but also
thankfully because my kids enjoy kicking a ball
around the yard and climbing trees.
Sure, they may occasionally fight over whose
turn it is on the Xbox, and I sometimes discover
some new Transformers game app has been
loaded on my phone, but the moment their
screen time starts impacting family life and
their ability to interact is the moment this
mama dinosaur pulls the plug and yells GAME
OVER.
TROUT
Words by Suzy Grinter
Trout’s heart
is still in
Barron River
You can take the man out of politics, but
you can’t take politics out of the man.
Michael (Trouty) Trout admits it took
a while to acclimatise to business after
three years as the Member for Barron
River.
“After minimum 15 hour days, seven
days a week of back to back meetings
and engagements, it’s been wonderful
re-engaging with my four daughters
instead of quick hellos as we pass at the
front door.
“I’m enjoying spending valued time with
them as they leave their teenage years
behind, and my business day sees me
supporting the family’s cattle and tourism
businesses,” says Michael.
Michael has also been involved in youth
suicide prevention, a subject close to his
heart, as well as ongoing responsibilities
as Chair of Tropical Tablelands Tourism
and Board Member of Tourism Tropical
North Queensland. He recently joined
Toastmasters in the humble recognition
that public speaking was not his forté.
“While representing Barron River in
State Parliament, my younger brothers
stepped up to manage our family’s small
businesses, Mungalli Falls Outdoor
Education Centre and Blazing Saddles.
“They’ve matured considerably, and now
they are my bosses, rather than the other
way around,” Michael chuckles.
“I’ve also spent a fair bit of time helping
Dad at our leased Cape York cattle
station, Kalinga,” adds Michael.
“
I love
the balance
between
tourism and
the cattle game,
and findboth
industries
very
rewarding ”
Cattle farming is in Michael’s blood.
He’s owned a registered stud since 1987,
comprising 800 head of Brahmans, the
origins of which can be traced back to
America in the Thirties.
“I find it fascinating studying the lineage,
and can trace cattle families in my herds
going back 100 years, Michael says.
The beautiful Kalinga property has
survived one of the worst droughts in
living memory, following three years of
fire that wreaked havoc on the already
arid pasture lands.
“Because of Dad’s immense knowledge
and experience, we managed to keep the
cattle alive on Kalinga, rejoicing when
the first rains fell on Christmas Eve 2015.
“I love the balance between tourism and
the cattle game, and find both industries
very rewarding, while benefiting me with
the understanding to represent rural and
regional areas.
“Cattle farming can be a tough game
but rewarding if you work with the
environment and the elements, and
look after your country so you can be
profitable,” says Michael.
Trout patriarch, Peter, join us; a truly
likeable man, highly respected for his
business acumen. I ask what he thought
when his son chose to run for Barron
River in 2012.
“I was very pleased. He had a
contribution to make to the community.
Some people have the ability to help
others, and some haven’t. It takes
strength of character to represent people
and get the best results for them in the
face of the omnipresent critics,” Peter
proffered.
I turned to his son, grabbing the bull by
the horns. “So, will Trouty return to the
Barron River?”
“Definitely. There’s a lot to do.
“Youth employment and small business
survival are dependent on each other.
We desperately need to see small business
regain capacity to employ. Regulations
need to be changed so small business can
employ without fear of the Ombudsman.
“I have the wisdom of three years in
office, a great deal of hindsight, and a
deep conviction that the only way to be
an effective State member is to stick your
neck out,” he adds.
Entertainment &
Events Manager
at The Jack
Cairns
Feature Artist/Entertainer/Musician: ROBBIE V
Band: THE DIALERS
This month I chatted to Robbie V, who
has been extremely busy because
as some of you may know, he’s the
front man for The Dialers, who are
a funked out high energy six-piece
band that bring a unique blend of live
grooves and hip hop to the masses!
They are one of my personal favourite
live acts in Cairns by far! Robbie-V
leads the audience on a very
entertaining, high energy musical
journey with his lyrics, a pulsing live
rhythm section of drums, keys and
bass is the backbone plus soaring
vocal melodic overtures with lashings
of tasteful guitar licks are the soul.
All held together by consciously not
taking themselves too seriously, just
simply celebrating good times and
fun vibes, leaving the audience with
sore cheeks from smiling and sore
legs from dancing. The Dialers have
taken their ever evolving sound to a
new level in 2016 with the launch of
their eponymous debut EP. Robbie V
has also released his own EP, which
he talks about with us this month…
IN HIS OWN WORDS
ROBBIE V: The SHDW BOXN EP
came about after overhearing an
audience member at an original solo
musicians’ night complain about
seeing “yet another singer with an
acoustic guitar” and I thought to
myself, what else are they gonna do?
Which then lead me to, what else
could they do? Before asking myself,
what could I do? I began dreaming
up a way for an MC to create a live
solo hip hop performance, instead of
just simply rapping over a pre-made
backing beat. Enabling them to travel
the world creating and performing live
music without having to smuggle a
band inside their carry-on luggage.
The performance needed to stripped
down to its raw form, whilst still
sounding good, and be interesting
enough to catch and hold the fleeting
attention of a passerby. At first I
experimented with triggering live
samples and vocals, then live bass
over drum loops and vocals, but I
wanted it to look, sound and “feel”
more “live” and spontaneous. If only
there was a way to beatbox live for
yourself to spit over…
Everything changed after seeing
artists like DubFX and Tomb Thumb
using a loop station to create music
by looping their own vocals on the fly,
completely live. I quickly proceeded to
lose my mind, as this “instrument” was
just the thing I had been searching
for. As soon as I got my hands on one,
it instantly opened the flood gates of
new exciting possibilities in creating
and performing live music.
The result is The SHDW BOXN EP.
A hip hop version of the original
singer/songwriter. Like a travelling
troubadour, with paint stained fingers
and a B-boy limp. I tried to keep the
EP as true to my live performances
as possible, recording the beatboxing
direct from the Loop Station without
all the post production bells and
whistles. Because “Baby, I like it
raw!!” No instruments were used, only
vocals. One man, a loop station and a
head full of nonsense.
The launch was awesome at Sing
Sing Espresso in a funky, little
laneway just off Lake Street which
attracted quite an artistic & diverse
crowd by joining forces with the THE
HUG PROJECT which showcased a
series of portraits that were on display
that focused on people’s lives and
their emotions by Cristina Bevilacqua,
as well as an energetic and beautiful
live performance by talented duo
INTERVIEW WITH
GEORGE
WASHINGMACHINE
by Dina Amin
Self-described as noisy, colourful and bombastic – just like the appliance
incorporated into his stage name, George Washingmachine and his eclectic
quintet continuously tip their hat to world music, in particular the gypsy jazz
movement that came out of France in the 1930s and 1940s. Noting Django
Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli as major influences on his music, George
and his band Feel The Manouche – Manouche being a direct homage to the
style of music popularised by Reinhardt and Grapelli – successfully juggle a
range of musical styles from South American jazz to early songbook swing jazz.
“Our music takes its hat off to world music,” enthuses George. “We do all kinds
of stuff – South American jazz, Venezuelan Choro, Brazilian music, American
songbook jazz, European-flavoured gypsy waltzes…it’s a real eclectic mix of
music.”
GEORGE WASHINGMACHINE
PRESENTS FEEL THE MANOUCHE
JAZZ UP NORTH 2016
FRIDAY 21 OCTOBER
Bringing together jazz flavours from across
our diverse planet, George Washingmachine
invites you to sit back and ‘Feel the Manouche’.
Taking its name from the Romany gypsies of Europe, this Australian Gypsy Jazz
Ensemble is an exercise in small group swing that brings together jazz flavours
from across our diverse planet to create a ‘world music’ feel.
With acclaimed violinist, actor and singer George Washingmachine out the
front, Feel the Manouche brings together double bass, accordion, guitars, fiddle
and voice to achieve a strong melodic groove that will have you waltzing and
swinging like a true gypsy.
tanksartscentre.com
Concluding this year’s Jazz Up North series at Tanks Arts Centre, George
Washingmachine and his outfit Feel The Manouche are made up of George
on violin and vocals; Clare O’Meara on violin, according and vocals; Stan
Valacos on double bass and George’s son Arthur on acoustic guitar. His other
son – Jerry – is also usually part of the band but is currently working on a film
project. Keeping in style with Django’s band, Arthur’s guitar will also double as
percussion.
Influenced at a very young age by their father, Arthur and Jerry grew up
surrounded by classic and contemporary jazz. They were given ukuleles and
encouraged to play along with dad. “There was always music in the house and
so they just developed an ear for it,” says George. “They’re good boys and they
have a great attitude.”
The Jazz Up North performance will be George’s first encounter with Tanks
Arts Centre. “We’re all very excited,” he says. “We’re really looking forward to
going up north and having a good time.”
Audiences can expect a large palette of Eastern and Western music, including
tracks from the band’s current album The Moon has left Town. In late 2015,
George and his band – via the help of a crowdfunding campaign – travelled
to Cuba for the Havana Jazz Festival. Inspired by their time in Cuba the band
are in the middle of recording a new album – a record that will hopefully be
available before their trip up north.
Prior to forming Feel the Manouche several years ago, George was a touring
solo musician, jumping from one band to the next. He also has a background
in performing and visual arts. While the former will definitely manifest in his
performance at Tanks in October, the latter unfortunately won’t make an
appearance. “Of course it would be great to incorporate it (visual art), but
unfortunately there’s only so much you can bring onto the plane,” laughs George.
George Washingmachine and his outfit Feel The Manouche will perform
at Tanks on Friday 21 October. This show will wrap up a brilliant year
for the Jazz Up North series which hosted the likes of Kate Ceberano,
Wilma Reading and The Cat Empire’s Harry James Angus. Tickets for
the last jazz show of 2016 can be purchased via ticketLiNK. For more
EAT & DRINK
LIFE Yes Chef
DANEBaird
L’Unico Trattoria Italiano
L’Unico’s at Trinity Beach has built an enviable reputation since it first
opened its doors nearly 25 years ago.
Head chef Dane Baird feels right at home cooking the modern Italian food
with a Mediterranean influence that the restaurant is renowned for.
“I enjoy cooking Italian food with a modern twist. We’ve got lots of things
on the menu that the locals just love, and for that reason we won’t ever take
them off. I’ve also got lots of good talented chefs around me,” says Dane.
Advising his chefs to stick to their calling and follow their passion, Dane
believes that a good chef must dedicate themselves to what they love doing.
“Obviously you’re going to have to put up with a bit of stuff from chefs, but
just take the good and leave the bad,” he says.
Utilizing the freshest local produce, Dane draws his inspiration from his
desire to put a bit of happiness in people’s palate.
“It’s always been a thing for me. I love creating things, and being able to
create something from scratch and put it together on a plate creating a little
bit of art gives me a feeling that nothing else does,” he says.
Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, L’Unico now caters to those
wanting to indulge earlier in the day, with a breakfast menu available Friday,
Saturday and Sunday.
Words Michelle Stacpoole • Photos Tony Gorell
are uniquely ours,” says Dane.
SIPPINGDUCK
A trip to Sipping Duck Coffee Roasters in Stratford redefines
coffee enjoyment. An eclectic coffee shop with a big personality,
a memorable identity, and a seriously good brew, Sipping Duck
has rapidly gained popularity among Cairns coffee aficionados.
“We only roast specialty coffee, which is grown to the highest
quality standards at high altitude, where coffee develops unique
and outstanding characteristics.”
The roastery has recently moved to Portsmith, where a second
coffee shop has been added, and there’s room to park the recently
acquired coffee trailer.
“This means we now have what it takes to cater for all sorts of
events throughout the region,” says Fi.
STOCKISTS OF
“We’re working on building a really good work team. There are
five of us at the moment, but expansion means we’re looking for
the right people to join the Sipping Duck family.
Sipping Duck is by no means just a café and roastery. A sizeable
range of attractively packaged coffees, organically sourced teas
and Queensland pure honey are available for retail and wholesale,
and Sipping Duck will shortly venture into different types of
drinking chocolate and Coffee Dry Rub for barbecue meats.
the aftertaste delicious and long lasting. Try it.
“Coffee is why we’re here, but we offer a selection of tasty, fresh,
easily prepared food because a lot of our trade comes in as part
of their routine; they’re on their way somewhere, so fresh, easy
and quick is the key.
“Soon we hope to bake our own products at the roastery,” says Fi.
Dale Jackley has been a baker for over half his life, starting
at 15 years old as a junior baker at Brumby’s Edmonton
where he completed his apprenticeship and worked for 15
years, until opening Jackley’s Bakehouse in 2012 in Raintrees
Shopping Centre. Just two weeks after that he married Bec,
and had to postpone their honeymoon to go to work the next
day. Although they didn’t realise it when they fell in love, the
first time they met is a story straight from the movies, when
Dale was little Bec’s buddy reader at White Rock Primary
Dale says he has always had an interest in cakes and is selftrained,
adding that while at Brumby’s he would often spend
his spare time making special creations for friends. Having his
own bakery allowed him the opportunity to get those creations
out to the public, with the response being so positive that they
opened a second Jackley’s Bakehouse at Mt Sheridan Plaza
just six months after opening their first store.
Their Facebook page is filled with 5 star reviews – the average
of 83 reviews is 4.9 stars – from very happy and impressed
customers. Dale and Bec have been blown away by so much
positive feedback, but they say that the very best reward is
seeing the eyes light up when they see their cake for the first
time. “It makes it all worthwhile” says Bec, who has not only
taught herself to make and decorate cakes, but also cake
toppers. And with at least 40 cakes being delivered each
week, that’s a lot of happy faces.
Dale has seen the industry change dramatically over his career,
with more and more bread sales being lost to the corporate
megaliths as they battle to sell the cheapest possible product.
He states frankly “We would have been long gone if it hadn’t
Private Hospital
65 years later
Cairns Private Hospital has embarked on its biggest changes
ever and Ramsay Healthcare’s Chief Operating Officer Kate
Munnings, says she is committed to growing and expanding
services in the region. With the recent completion of the
redevelopment work, Ms Munnings and Ramsay Healthcare’s Queensland
State Manager Lloyd Hill, came to Cairns last month to meet with local
medical specialists and to map out a plan for the continued growth of the
Hospital.
‘This year marks the 65th anniversary of the hospital and it’s a fitting
time to look at how we can continue to grow the services we offer to the
community’, said Ramsay Cairns CEO Shane Mitchell. ‘When you look
at how far the hospital has come over the past 65 years, you get a real
sense of what has been achieved. From the early days of Calvary and
now with Ramsay, there always been a shared belief in looking after the
local community.
Ramsay Health Care is
focusing on regional hospitals
with 40 of its 70 hospitals in
regional Australia.

Shane Mitchell has been CEO of Ramsay Cairns for two
years and is well aware of the growing needs of the Far North
Queenslanders in healthcare. ‘We are very much committed
to meeting the needs of the community in the same way the
Sisters were when they came to Cairns in 1951’. ‘Ramsay
Health Care has 70 hospitals throughout Australia and 40 of
them are in regional Australia, so it’s pretty good indication
of the ongoing commitment to grow services in regional
Australia.’
Locally, Ramsay Cairns operates three facilities including
Cairns Private Hospital, Cairns Day Surgery and The Cairns
Clinic. Discussions with Ramsay Healthcare’s COO, Kate
Munnings and Queensland State Manager Lloyd Hill, focussed
on the Hospitals plans to develop an Intensive Care Unit
soon and there were also discussions on a private Emergency
Department in the not too distant future.
With Cairns Private Hospital’s expansion and renovations
now complete and an additional 56 new private rooms, a
new Rehabilitation Ward and gymnasium, the Hospital has
extended its range of rehabilitation to include programs in
Neurological Rehabilitation, Falls Prevention, Oncology,
Orthopaedic, Reconditioning and Amputee Rehabilitation.
The multidisciplinary team of rehabilitation specialists,
nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and exercise
physiologists are now able to tailor individual programs for
patients’ individual needs.
From the early days of Calvary
and now with Ramsay, there has
always been a shared belief in
looking after the community.’
Cairns Private Hospitals new Cardiac Medical Unit opened
last month and is a new unit for patients transitioning from
coronary care. It offers support and education for patients
recovering from cardiac procedures and episodes.
The hospitals newly refurbished Maternity Unit includes 3
dedicated Birth Suites and a Special Care Nursery and has
been a very welcome addition to the hospitals facilities. The
three birth suites all with photographic murals have been
designed to encourage a calming ambience for women and
to make the birthing experience as family centred as possible.
One of the other new initiatives is the expansion of day
programs at The Cairns Clinic, Ramsay Cairns private
psychiatric clinic. The Clinic now offers day programs for
both inpatients and outpatients in PTSD, Grief and Loss,
Relapse Prevention as well as our Wellbeing and Life Esteem
Programs. This will give people the opportunity to access the
support at The Cairns Clinic for anyone in the community
needing support.
‘We have come a long way in 65 years and we’re committed
to continuing to meet the needs of Far North Queensland for
many years to come’ said Shane Mitchell.
Formal celebrations to celebrate the Cairns Private Hospitals
65th anniversary will be held later this year.

“WHAT
IS BEST
FOR THE
PATIENT IN
FRONT?”

What does a Cardiologist do?
CARDIOLOGISTS ARE SPECIALISTS IN THE
FINDING, TREATING AND PREVENTING
DISEASES OF THE HEART AND BLOOD VESSELS.
DR TIM CARRUTHERS
Consultant Cardiologist
Our Region’s Cardiac Journey
Cairns has come a long way in Cardiology terms. When Dr Tim Carruthers
arrived in Cairns from Sydney in 1989 as a young, fresh-faced cardiologist, some
patients used to ask him if they could speak to his Dad. “Some people didn’t
believe I was old enough to be a medical specialist. I grew a scary looking
moustache in an attempt to look older. I don’t have that problem anymore,” he
laughs. Dr Carruthers was the first consultant cardiologist to venture further
north than Brisbane. “They told me not to come to Cairns. That there wouldn’t
be enough work for a sub-specialist like me in such a small regional centre. But
I loved it here. I made a leap of faith, and I haven’t drawn breath since. I had
a waiting list of six weeks from the first day I opened my practice, and that was
the shortest it has ever been.”
Roll forward 27 years, Tim is very pleased to see Cardiac services in the region
continue to grow. “I now work in a Practice alongside six other Cardiologists
from various disciplines, Cardiac Sonographers, and Nurses, and I really value
that collegial support, and the ability to access the cross-care my patients need,
in-house. And the only constant is change. Dr Sam Hillier has brought cutting
edge skills in Cardiac Imaging making a huge difference by improving diagnostic
accuracy in complex cases. Recently, our team of Interventional Cardiologists,
led by Dr Greg Starmer, have commenced valve opening procedures using
balloons, and he will soon be plugging holes in hearts with occluder devices. I
am also very excited to add the services of an Electrophysiologist, Dr Kieran
Dauber, to our team. Dr Dauber will soon be doing radiofrequency ablations
in Cairns. All of these procedures are also ‘firsts’ in Far North Queensland.
Previously, patients have had to fly to Brisbane for treatment of this kind. These
are big steps in the journey. A journey for our region that I hope will soon be
complete, with the full gamut of Cardiac therapies available to patients here
in Cairns, right up to, and including, Cardiac Surgery. Far North Queensland
deserves nothing less.”
Snip & Unsnip
SNIP
Every year Fathers’ Day occurs in September
and there comes a time when the question is
asked: “To be or not to be?”
Many men are choosing to take the responsibility
of contraception by undergoing “the snip”
which is known as a vasectomy.
The vas deferens is the tube through which the
sperm travel from the testis to the urethra and
they then out through the penis.
Techniques vary in all surgical procedures but
usually an incision is made on each side of the
scrotum and the vas deferens is cut and the
ends tied off. A number of techniques may then
be used to reduce the chance of spontaneous
re-joining of the vas which can occasionally
occur. The medical literature reports that there
is an approximately 1 in 3000 to 1 in 30,000
incidence of spontaneous re - joining.
It is important to remember sterility does not
occur immediately after the operation is done
because there are millions of sperms stored in
the seminal vesicles (small pouches next to the
prostate) which may survive for some weeks.
It is essential therefore, that contraceptive
measures be continued until satisfactory results
are obtained from a “sperm count” after the
procedure.
Arrangements are made for these tests when
the patient returns for review, usually about a
month later. Ejaculation post operatively on
a number of occasions will help reduce the
stores of sperm. It usually takes between 10-20
ejaculations to reduce the sperm count to zero.
If the count shows no sperm present, then no
further contraceptive measures need to be taken
and the man can be regarded as sterile.
UNSNIP
Vasectomy should be regarded as a permanent
procedure. However, unsnip or vasectomy
reversal may be requested if circumstances
change and the man wishes to have children.
The success of a reversal depends on many
factors including the man’s age, the time
since the vasectomy was done and anti-sperm
antibodies which disable the sperm rather like
an infection is removed by the immune system.
The procedure involves a small incision being
made on either side of the scrotum over
the vasectomy site. The scar tissue from the
vasectomy is cut away the two ends are then
stitched together using very fine material with
the aid of the operating microscope. There
will be some swelling after the operation which
is likely to be more than experienced when
undergoing the vasectomy.
It is important to realise that in the topic of
fertility, success can be measured in different
ways. For the patient and Cairns Urology,
success is measured by the production of a
baby and overall this is around 60%. For some
other institutions success may be measured by
the ability to achieve joining the ends of vas
together. Sometimes success is measured by the
presence of sperm in the ejaculate.
If a couple is contemplating In Vitro Fertilisation
(IVF) after vasectomy then success is usually
greater if ejaculated sperm are used than sperm
taken directly from the testes. The reason is
thought to be related to sperm maturity. For that
reason, vasectomy reversal may be a better firstchoice
procedure.
Dr David Shepherd was born in Mareeba and grew up
in Cairns and has strong ties to the area. After finishing his medical
degree at the University of Queensland he completed his Advanced
Training in Orthopaedics, working in major Brisbane hospitals before
returning to Cairns as a Visiting Medical Officer in orthopaedics at
Cairns Base Hospital.
Following a training sabbatical in the United Kingdom, Dr Shepherd
returned to Cairns in 1997 and opened his private practice. He works
at the Cairns Private Hospital, with his consulting rooms located on the
ground floor Flecker House, conveniently close to the Cairns Private
Hospital and imaging services.
With more than 22 years’ experience, Dr Shepherd provides general
Orthopaedic consultancy with an in interest in arthroscopy of the
shoulder and knee, particularly rotator cuff syndrome, shoulder
instability and ACL repair. His experience at total joint replacement
of hips, knees and shoulders means that Dr Shepherd provides
comprehensive lifetime care to patients with low complication rates.
He is well-respected by his patients, thanks to his focus on providing a
definitive diagnosis with clear outlines for treatment pathways.
“It’s fantastic when my patients are well again,” he said. “I don’t relax
until the job is done and they’re feeling good again.”
He is also highly regarded amongst his peers for happily
discussing the management of complicated patients
with referring doctors and for providing support to the
James Cook University teaching program for medicine.
His caring nature also extends beyond his profession.
As a child growing up, he travelled to remote
communities across the Cape with his father, who was
a relieving postmaster in the region. These travels as
a youngster made him aware of challenges people in
remote areas face, which is why he has been actively
involved on the organising committee and as a
participant in the Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride. He also
sponsors the event and maps the cross-country route
and schedules.
“It’s been a privilege to be able to help ensure regional
children have access to the same opportunities as
those in larger towns and cities,” said Dr Shepherd,
whose commitment extends to patients in remote
communities where he is happy to co-ordinate a
“The money raised from this charity event provides
opportunities for children in remote areas across the
father, a Cairns GP Surgeon, by
completing his high schooling and his
medical degree in Brisbane. He then went
on to complete specialist training in
Brisbane and the United Kingdom.
A position as Visiting Public Surgeon a
the Cairns Hospital became available so
he came back to Cairns, working both in
private practice and at the Cairns
Hospital, the latter for 25 years.
He is well-regarded by his patients for his
dedication and his time working closely
with them, their GPs, radiologists,
pathologists and other specialists involved
in their care to ensure they have
comprehensive surgical management.
His passion is evident in the long hours he
puts in and dedication he gives each
Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Fertility
What do you love about your job?
I feel so privileged to have my job. A big part of fertility medicine is
the relationship with women and couples. I do get to experience some
really amazing moments. I had my own experience of pregnancy loss
and IVF. I know what a difficult and isolating experience infertility
can be. I work really hard to try to make that difficult time easier for
people if I can.
What are your special interests?
My practice is dedicated to managing infertility and pre-pregnancy
health. I think that finding out why a couple cannot conceive is really
important. It is not just about fertility treatments. I have a special
interest in caring for women who have experienced pregnancy
losses such as stillbirth and recurrent miscarriage to assist them with
preparing for future pregnancies and to assist them during very early
pregnancy.
What do you love about your job?
I love the variety in my job. I get to be a part of people’s lives during
really special times. I get to care for couples as they prepare to become
parents and be a part of the amazing experience of birth. I get to
look after women in later life which is just as interesting and satisfying.
What are your special interests?
I provide care for pregnancy, gynaecology issues and infertility. I have
a special interest in keyhole surgery. My pregnancy care is flexible and
I provide home visits both before and after birth.
What do you do in your free time?
I don’t get a lot of free time! I do love a good coffee and I am a bit of
a shopaholic. Shoes are a particular weakness.
What do you do in your free time?
My daughter is now four years old. Any time spent with her and
her fabulous imagination is great. My husband and I are really keen
gardeners. We spend a lot of our weekends out in the yard pottering
away quietly alongside each other.
Get on the front foot to
KEEP YOU FIT
By Nicholas Roth
Living a healthy, active lifestyle is
something that it’s people strive to
fulfil, particularly in tropical Far North
Queensland. We are spoilt for choice
for picturesque locations to exercise;
whether it be a leisurely stroll along the
esplanade, or a climb up the Pyramid to
witness that magical sunrise.
Unfortunately however, those nasty
things called ‘injuries’ get in the way
and prevent us from achieving our goals.
Those small niggles quickly turn into
full blown injuries and before you know
it – you are back on the couch on a
Saturday morning instead of pounding
the pavements!
As a local Podiatrist, I see this far too
often and is frustrating because if treated
early enough, these small ache’s and
pains can be taken care of and prevented
from returning.
The majority of these issues generally
occur through your feet and legs – after
all, they are doing a lot of the work! Our
team at FNQ Podiatry & Orthotics are
passionate about assessing and treating
these lower limb aches and pains quickly
and preventing them from progressing
into something sinister.
By utilizing the latest Podiatric
technology from Europe, our Podiatrists
run you through a thorough walking or
running assessment that is specific to
your individual needs. This includes;
high speed video analysis, pressure plates
to assess where you a distributing load
through your feet and a muscle strength
and range of motion assessment. It
is amazing the response we get from
patients when they can actually see how
their feet and legs are functioning while
walking and running!
Treatment is then tailored to target the
contributing factors identified in the
assessment. Often this is as simple as
getting you into the appropriate footwear
for your individual feet – no, not all
shoes are for everyone! Other common
treatment options include; massage,
strengthening/stretching programs, dry
needling, foot/ankle mobilization and
soft, custom made insoles for your shoes
to help with shock absorption.
If you’re tired of putting up with painful
feet and legs while exercising, call FNQ
Podiatry & Orthotics today on 40 455
749. Exercising is meant to be a joyful
experience, not a painful one!
If
you wanted off road capability; you
bought a tank (or at least a square
aluminium box made by Land Rover),
if you wanted good ground clearance;
you bought a lorry and if you wanted to get kids
to school; you bought them shoes or a bus ticket!
The term now seems to encompass everything
from a super mini with a higher ride height, to a
ute with a lid on the back. In fact, like all terms
invented by marketing departments, it has become
fragmented and heavily subcategorised. There
are now crossovers and off-roaders, luxury and
compact models… all jostling for our attention
and their share of the market. I guess the most
obvious inadequacy of the term is ‘Sport’ - merely
dropping a supercharged V8 into a 4 tonne leather
lined apartment-building-on-wheels doesn’t make it
sporty. Fundamentally, we live in the home of big,
lumbering four wheel drives or their smaller, agile
crossover cousins. Queensland, or at least our bit
of it, is not hospitable to low riding hyper cars. Our
potholes eat low profiles, and oddly beveled parking
bays consume front spoilers like hotel breakfast
toast.
So, when I heard that the former British ‘prince
of sports sedans and GT cars’ had decided to
produce an SUV, I was intrigued, as well as perhaps
slightly saddened. Since the heady days of the
“Toorak tractor” everyone, really EVERYONE, has
launched a vehicle that pretends to be sporty and
high riding, with plenty of space for canoes or what
not. Having often praised Jaguar and its recent
reinvention - twinned with radical improvements in
reliability (not hard) - made this apparent jumping
on the bandwagon feel a bit wrong. The plethora
of identikit specified luxury high riders also poses
questions as to why “Jaag” would enter the fray. By
today’s standards this is a mature market with some
well-heeled and well-designed contestants. Even if
you were just to focus on the the obvious – Audi,
BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Lexus, and Jaguar’s
commercial sibling, Range Rover – the competition
is stiff; models comparable and the market tight.
Stealing market from its competitors might work,
but this would have to be some cool motor to get
brand loyalty broken at this level. So it was with a
heavy heart I committee to driving Jaguar’s latest
creation, the F-Pace
The F-Pace Trinity Auto had lined up for me to test
drive was a metallic black (ebony, apparently) beast.
The sunlight reflecting off the well-sculpted curves
made it difficult to ascertain its exact scale at first
glance and even after climbing in, I thought ‘This
is midsize, perhaps an X4 or a Q5’, until I tried to
reach the passenger door and found it to be way
out of reach. Without pausing to indulge in the soft
and luxuriously trimmed leather I got out, walked
around again, this time paying more attention. The
styling cues were here (now consistent across the
range), the sweeps, the curves and the newly formed
Jaguar nostril played their part to demonstrate this
was a bigger, taller, more muscular member of the
marque. Under the lifting tailgate is a cavernous
boot (650 litres) that contradicts the external styling
and rivals most of the competitors in this class,
even beating off some large off roaders including
(unbelievably) the Toyota and its Lexus equivalent.
Don’t get me wrong the Jaguar isn’t trying to win
over the thoroughbred off roaders; you won’t be
bolting on a lift kit, muddies and a snorkel, but you
could get an entire family and all their gear safely
to most of our FNQ infrastructure. The body is
all aluminium, making it significantly lighter than
similarly sized SUVs. It’s almost as big as a Porsche
Cayenne but weighs less than a Commodore.
Stepping back inside the cabin is as surprisingly
spacious as I originally ascertained, offering
potentially more room than the German price
competitors. The F-Pace has keyless start - simply
pressing the button caused the engine to spring
to life, and the now familiar gearshift dial rose
obediently from the centre console. Most notably,
the F-Pace has (as standard) a digital dash with all
clocks and readouts put on a screen placed in the
instrument binnacle, this can change from speedo,
to tacho and sat nav as required. All the essentials
were easy to find. The seat adjusts quickly to
accommodate me and the Bluetooth paired with
my iPhone so effortlessly, I wasn’t initially convinced
that it had actually happened. The infotainment
system is a triumph and arguably one of the best
currently on the market. The test car was fitted with
the upgrade 10.2-inch touchscreen, blessed with
razor-sharp graphics. It does away with buttons
all together and operates as intuitively as an iPad.
So far, so good: great looks, well-appointed cabin,
room for all the bits and bobs, good ergonomics and
all with practicality thrown in. Before I engaged
drive to pull off the pavement, I deeply hoped I
wouldn’t be disappointed.
I wasn’t. The only clues that you’re in an SUV are
the fact you can see more from above and a slight
lean in the corners as vigorous driving gives over
to physics.
PUTTING THE CAT
BY DAVID LEITH
AMONGST
THE PIGEONS.
When I was a boy, the term ‘Sports
Utility Vehicle’ did not exist. A car was
a car, a truck was a truck, and a lorry
was a lorry - there were no hybrid or
multipurpose catchall vehicles.
The handling was tight, steering direct and (as
Jaguar has previously managed with its large
saloons) felt much more like a smaller car. The 3
litre V6 supercharged engine is torquey and the
exhausts tuned to give you the soundtrack of grunt
to go with the actual G-forces. Although there are
other engine options the eight-speed auto is coupled
to variants and responded quickly and smoothly
both around town and overtaking on the highway.
There are paddles on the steering wheel for the
manual enthusiast, but in this case the auto box was
so easy I wasn’t even tempted to try them. This was
no mean feat - I was beginning to think the ‘sport’
part of SUV made sense!
All in all, this is a truly great car, and a fantastic first
entry into this hotly contested market. I can’t help
think that Jaguar has built the vehicle they wanted
to build, rather than fit into any of the pre-existing
SUV pigeon holes. It’s a great drive, has good looks,
road presence and the added advantage of novelty.
An un-optioned base model diesel will set you
back around $74K + onroads but in all seriousness
expect to find at least an extra $10K in things you’ll
want to have, the Jaguar option list is possibly one
of the best (and longest) I have seen in this segment.
There is no doubt that Jaguar’s on-going mission to
take sales from the Germans will have another boost
as early sales have been strong.
LexusRx
Lexus’ fourth generation RX luxury SUV has
underlined its appeal in the marketplace by recording
substantial sales growth on last year.
July 2016 sales of the RX were up nearly 40 per cent on
the corresponding 2015 figure.
Lexus Australia chief executive Peter McGregor attributed
the growth to the RX’s striking design, high level of
specification and newly introduced turbo model.
“The RX underwent a very significant change for the fourth
generation model, delivering exceptional design including
an award-winning interior, high levels of efficiency, driving
performance and luxury features, all of which have found
favour among our valued customers,” Mr McGregor said.
“It has also grown in size with no impact on its sleek profile and
dramatic styling, which has widened its appeal and added to its
versatility.”
The RX model line begins with the RX turbo, followed by the V6-
powered RX 350 and hybrid-powered RX 450h.
Lexus’ July result indicated positive growth for other model lines
including the LX, sales of which were up more than 62 per cent on last
year.
Total sales for the brand were also up six per cent year to date.
CATHOLIC
Education
An education based on
gospel values
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS seek to
live Gospel values and empower
students with a code of behaviour
based on Catholic moral
principles and the teachings of
the Gospels. It is with optimism
and a deep sense of privilege
and purpose that we prepare
our students to engage with and
make an authentic contribution
to wider society.
These core beliefs and values
are reflected in Catholic schools’
pastoral care practices, their
commitment to peace, social
justice and service, and to the
development of each student’s
self-confidence, resilience and
character.
Communities of care
Catholic education occurs
in welcoming, inclusive, and
connected communities. Our
schools seek to provide a genuine,
safe and caring experience
of community, to encourage
students to appreciate the
intrinsic worth of who they are,
to value diversity and treat each
other with dignity, enabling them
in turn to promote and respect
the dignity of all.
Safe and secure
Our schools strive to provide an
environment where students feel
safe, secure and comfortable.
Our schools and their leadership
seek to ensure best practice in
providing a safe and positive
school environment where
healthy relationships can flourish.
Bullying, harassment and
discrimination are not acceptable
and all schools have established
practices for managing
unacceptable behaviour.
An emphasis on respect for
self and others results in the
disciplined and favourable
learning and teaching
environments for which our
schools are renowned, and where
students feel safe and welcome,
and can achieve to the best of
their potential.
An educational partnership
A Catholic education is seen as
a partnership between students,
parents, school and parish
where parents and families are
welcomed as members of the
school community. Catholic
schools encourage parents to be
involved in all facets of school life
and to actively support students
in the full range of educational
activities.
Many opportunities exist
for parents to form lifelong
friendships and contribute to
the life and development of
their children’s schools through
involvement with School Boards,
Parents and Friends Associations
and voluntary activities in school
communities.
Social and emotional
wellbeing
Students in Catholic schools are
often described as “happy”. Our
schools place great focus on the
social and emotional wellbeing
of all in their school
communities. We recognise
that success of any kind –
learning or in life - is founded
on the wellbeing of individuals,
personally and in relationship
with others.
A life to the full
Catholic schools emphasise
personal and social development
as fundamental enduring
values and requirements in
an everchanging world. This
holistic care of students educates
the whole child and provides
an educational foundation
for life to the full - addressing
spiritual, intellectual, social,
emotional, physical and cultural
development.
Catholic education strives to
make a difference in the lives
of individuals and in the wider
community by challenging our
students to find meaning and
value in their lives, and develop
communal obligations and
aspirations.
Quality teaching and
learning
Catholic schools have long been
known for their high standards.
They strive for excellence in
all that they do, encouraging
students to use their Godgiven
talents to reach their full
potential.
Our qualified, caring and
dedicated teachers are one of the
great strengths of our Catholic
school communities.
Catholic schools seek to provide
a high-quality academic and
vocational education for all
their students, giving due
emphasis to the fundamental
literacy and numeracy skills
required for both learning and
Welcoming to all
Our Catholic school communities
open to families and students
from all walks of life and faith
traditions who are committed to,
and supportive of, the ethos of
Catholic Education and seek to
embrace all that it offers.
While enrolment preference is
given to those of the Catholic
faith, our schools also embrace
those of other faith backgrounds
as a wonderful opportunity to
promote understanding and
introduce all to the person and
message of Jesus Christ, wherever
they may be in their faith journey.
Our schools are committed to
fostering cultures of inclusion
that respond to the educational
needs of students regardless
of their abilities, backgrounds
and aspirations. Our school
communities are places where
the uniqueness and individuality
of students and families is
recognised and welcomed and
the human dignity of each
student is promoted.
Fees and affordability
Catholic schools are partly
government funded, however
reasonable parent contributions
are essential to make up for the
shortfall in government funding
in comparison to state schools.
However, based on gospel values
and Church mission to care
for the poor and marginalised,
no child is denied a Catholic
education based on the genuine
inability of parents to pay school
fees, in whole or part. Substantial
fee discounts and exemptions
are available in circumstances of
genuine financial hardship.
Skill Select Visa Options
Australia’s Skill Select program is for people who are not sponsored by
an employer but have skills in particular occupations required in Australia.
Under this program applicants can migrate
individually on their own merits or through
sponsorship by a state or territory government
or eligible relative sponsor.
Under the SkillSelect program visa applicants
interested in the independent skilled, family
sponsored skilled, state or territory sponsored
skilled or the business skills program are
required to submit an Expression of Interest
(EOI) first. They will then need to receive an
invitation in order to lodge a visa application.
An EOI contains an applicant’s personal
details, their nominated occupation, work
experience, study and education, level of
English skills and details of a skills assessment.
Applicants must submit their EOI online
and once submitted the applicant will
receive a points score and results based
on their imputed information. The result
and points score along with the time of
submission becomes the applicant’s ranking.
For independent and family sponsored visa
invitations are issued automatically to the
highest ranking EOI’s subject to occupation
ceilings. For state and territory sponsored
visas the state or territory governments will
locate and select skilled workers from the
EOI pool that they want to nominate.
If an applicant is selected then they will
receive an invitation from SkillSelect.
Applicants then have 60 days in which to
make a valid visa application. For applicants
who are not selected their EOI’s will remain
in the system for two years before being
removed.
After each invitation round for the
independent and family sponsored visas, the
Department of Immigration and Border
Protection publish on their website the lowest
scoring points test mark that allowed an EOI
to be invited for each occupation group.
This gives applicants an indication of their
potential for receiving an invitation in future
rounds.
For applicants who do not meet the
requirements of an EOI or applicants who
are unsuccessful in obtaining an invitation
from SkillSelect, the Employer Sponsored
visa programs are available and eligible
applicants could look at finding an employer
to sponsor them to migrate to Australia.
For further advice on your visa options you
WHO PAYS THE COSTS
of going to court in a divorce?
Suzanne Hadley
I’m often asked this question
by clients. If the question was
as simple as “what is the filing
fee on a divorce?” the answer
is simple.
Currently the general filing fee on an
application for divorce is $865 and a
reduced fee where concessions apply is
$290. If you engage a solicitor to complete
the forms and attend to service there are
additional professional fees payable
However if the question is “who pays the
legal costs on a divorce, child matter or
property division?” the short answer is, both
of you.
The Family Law Act provides for each
party to pay their own legal costs, unlike
the civil jurisdiction where the Court may
order the unsuccessful party to pay the
successful party’s costs. This is referred to as
“costs following the event” and is a powerful
negotiation tool in the civil jurisdiction to
avoid a costs order
The resources of the Family Court and
the Federal Circuit Court, for some years
now, have been reduced by successive
governments and as a result, those resources
are incapable of meeting the demand for
services. Litigants are asked to contribute to
the cost of the court process by paying filing
fees at various stages of proceedings.
In a child matter, you may also be asked to
contribute to the costs of an Independent
Children’s Lawyer, (referred to as an ICL)
if appointed. This cost could be several
thousand dollars each and is but a fraction
of the costs actually paid to the ICL by the
Legal Aid Office, which may also meet the
costs of the preparation of a Family Report.
One of the services delivered by the
Court in a property division case is a
Financial Conference, called a Conciliation
Conference, which essentially is a mediation
convened by a Registrar of the Court. The
Registrar is a family lawyer of many years
of experience. Because of the demand
for this service, there may be considerable
delays. The court may direct parties to
attend a private mediation with the costs of
the private mediation borne equally
So what happens when a case goes all the
way to trial as some do? Significant legal
costs in the tens of thousands of dollars
are likely to be incurred by each party.
But what happens when one of the parties
has conducted their case so badly that the
successful party has incurred astronomical
costs through no fault of their own? Is it
just and equitable that the badly behaved,
delaying party, or in extreme cases a party
insistent on running a case that has no
prospect of success, receives the inevitable
result and the successful party is left with
a huge bill that should never have been
incurred? Although the Act provides that
each party bears their own legal costs, there
is provision for costs to be awarded against
an unsuccessful party.
Generally a costs order would be according
to the scale of costs set out in either the
Family Court or the Federal Circuit Court
Rules. The scale is much lower than the
actual legal fees incurred. In very limited
circumstances and I must say in 23 years of
practice I have seen this happen only twice,
indemnity costs may be awarded against the
unsuccessful party has prolonged litigation
unnecessarily. Indemnity costs means that
all or a significant part of the money spent
on legal fees by the other party is recovered
against the unsuccessful party. It is a
significant deterrent.
As always, significant legal costs may
be avoided by open and respectful
communication and negotiation, a course I
urge all of my clients to take.
BUSINESS
How to build an
EFFECTIVE
RELATIONSHIP
WITH A RECRUITER
Eva Grabner
The title “Recruiter” tends to have both positive and negative connotations
depending on whom you are speaking with. Some people would consider
recruiters unhelpful whilst others swear by them. As a recruiter I come
across both of these attitudes when meeting with clients and candidates
alike, mainly because of past experiences or because of what people have
heard.
Either way, there is good and bad in every industry and whether you are
just commencing the search for your next role or looking to find a leader for
your business, I would like to give you a few tips to help you build a good,
strong relationship with a recruiter.
• Do your research. Find a recruitment company and then an individual
recruiter that specialises in your field or industry. Speak with a few of them
and then decide who you are confident will professionally advise you and
represent you.
• Keep the communication lines open. A recruiter will speak with many,
many people in a given week and will not always remember everyone that
they have spoken with, so keep in contact at a frequency recommended by
your recruiter.
• Take on board feedback: A recruiter knows the market, what your market
value is and how best to promote your skills. Listen to the feedback, ask
questions and understand that we want to give you the best possible chance
to gain the offer you desire.
• When meeting with a recruiter, be clear about your career goals and
aspirations. Also what you can offer your next employer. Be honest and
upfront. We want to help you find employment you will both enjoy and
excel at but if we feel you are withholding information then a recruiter
won’t take the risk of representing you.
• We understand that it can be hard to place your career into someone
else’s hands, but trust us; we know what we’re doing. Allow the recruiter
to do what they do best. When a recruiter has initiated a client referral
for you do not contact the client directly without the recruiter’s permission
or knowledge and most importantly, leave the salary negotiation up to us.
Trust me, we have the best chance of getting you what you are looking for,
or better.
• Be cordial and professional at all times, especially when receiving
disappointing news. We endeavour to do our best to keep you in the loop
and do not enjoy the calls to advise you that you were unsuccessful with an
application. It is as hard on us as it is on you. Take the call gracefully and
listen to the feedback you receive.
Use us for advice, call us when you see opportunities advertised, we may
know the company or hiring manager and can give you some ‘inside’
information if they are recruiting directly.
We are here to help and sincerely love finding jobs for our candidates and
amazing leaders for our clients. If you are looking for your next opportunity
(or next leader!) please call me for a confidential discussion.
BUSINESS
Signs your
WEBSITE
UPGRADE
is long overdue
Cathy Earle
Websites today are valuable assets allowing
businesses to sell their products or services
online, drive in-store sales or enhance
business to business relations. Although
most businesses understand the importance
of having a website, they often forget the
importance of keeping their site content,
marketing and design current.
Businesses typically review and overhaul
their online presence every three years, but
this is often leaving it too late, especially
when you factor in the time it takes to
review, restructure and then redesign your
site — adding an additional six months to
the timeline.
Realistically your site should be reviewed
annually assessing; site structure, reviewing
content and design, checking search engine
rankings, and reviewing the competition.
This review process will give you a good
indication as to whether your site needs
a few tweaks, or a major overhaul. When
reviewing ask yourself the following four
questions:
1. Is your website using
responsive design?
Having a mobile friendly (or responsive)
website not only gives your audience a
better online viewing experience, but it also
helps you get found on the search engines.
While Google have stated that responsive
design is only a small ranking factor in their
search algorithm it’s one factor that should
not be overlooked.
2. Can you easily login into your site
and make changes to the content?
Updating your website content should be
easy, long gone are the days of calling your
web designer to make change or two to your
company bio. If you’re not using a Content
Management System (CMS) you’re missing
out on so many features. I could dedicate
an entire article to the topic alone, instead
I’ll give you this tidbit: WordPress is a CMS
platform being used by over 20 per cent of
websites worldwide. That’s over 74 million
websites using a CMS!”
3. Are you selling online?
If you’re using WordPress there are a
number of eCommerce options available
that will allow you to accept online
payments. You don’t have to be selling
physical products either. Think: monthly
subscriptions, conferences or meetings,
donations, the possibilities are endless.
4. Is your site connected
to social media?
It’s one thing to be on social media,
but another to ensure your social
media platforms and your website are
interconnected. Having icons link to
your social media pages is just a starting
point, your site should have the ability to
automatically distribute content to your
Facebook and Twitter accounts as well
as your email subscribers at the click of a
button.
If “no” was the resounding the answer to
the questions above, then it’s a clear sign
your website is in need of an upgrade. Still
unsure? Call Peaks Media for a website
review.
THE POWER OF PR
with Danae Jones
Who Wants Some Free Publicity?
Media releases are a great way
to get credible exposure for your
business without having to spend
thousands of dollars on advertising.
If the release is newsworthy
enough for a media outlet to
follow, you could potentially have
your business mentioned on radio
news bulletins, in newspapers
and magazines and on the daily
television news within twenty-four
hours of the distribution time.
So great you say, let’s send a media
release out about our company
every week! This will not get you
the exposure you expect, you do
have to be very selective as to when
you send your media releases out
and what story you want the media
to follow. Newsrooms are very
busy places and news editors and
journalists don’t have the time to
read through mountains of boring
media releases each day. As it
is hundreds of emails are sent
through to newsrooms and it’s only
the well written, “newsworthy”
releases that get picked up.
When I say “newsworthy”, I mean
a subject matter that is interesting
and topical. This is why it’s so
important for companies to use a
professional to write their media
releases for them. Public Relations
professionals know what the media
look for and are able to deliver the
story to the media in a format that
is “newsworthy”.
A misconception many people have
is that anyone can write a media
release, if you’re good at English
than you’ll be good at writing a
press release. This is not the case,
developing a well written, catchy
release takes a lot of time and
skill and it’s usually journalists or
creative writers that are the best
ones at doing this type of job.
So, the next time you ask your
marketing department to send out
a release for your company, think
again. While some marketing staff
are great at writing releases, others
are very poor, and tend to just put
a sales pitch of the company on
paper. Speaking from experience,
a journalist can’t stand this type
of blatant advertising and those
releases usually end up deleted.
The way your story is presented to
the media is crucial.
Another key thing to remember
when sending a media release out,
is make sure you are available for
interviews. I can’t emphasise this
enough. So often businesses send
them out and think that’s all that
is expected of them, and when
the media try to contact them for
more information, they’re unable
to speak with anyone. This not
only makes journalists frustrated,
but also means that your story
won’t rate a mention. When you
send a release out you are basically
saying – “This is an invitation for
you to call me and follow this story
further”.
So what are some things the media
may be interested in covering about
your business?
1. Anniversary’s
2. Events
3. New Products or Services
4. Milestones
5. Awards, achievements,
or recognition given to
the company or staff
6. Statistics relating to
your industry
7. Securing a big contract
8. Charity donations
THE FACE OF
YOUR BUSINESS
By Rachel Fairweather
Your brand identity is the face of your business.
What is brand identity you ask? … It is the visual
elements that form part of your overall business brand.
Branding differentiates you from your competitors.
Branding is how you want your audience to perceive your
business. Branding gives a first impression of what your
audience can expect from your products and services.
The key elements for a strong brand identity is your
business name, logo, tagline, fonts and colours. These
key elements need to be created for your business to
reflect your business and appeal to your customers. It is
stated by many experts worldwide that ‘a business with a
strong brand will give you a greater chance of success.’
A vital part of developing your brand identity is the
design of a good logo, the logo should be included
into all corporate communication mediums, including
business cards, letterhead, brochures, advertising,
signage, newsletters, emails, website and social media.
The number one rule for logo design is that it must be
able to speak for itself, it should be simple & distinctive.
Effective logos do not have to be explained. Take a look
at some of the world’s most successful brands: the Nike
swoosh, the golden arches of McDonalds, Twitter with
its simple blue bird - these have become so successful
just by keeping it simple. Brands that use strong visual
identities help this occur.
Colours play a major role in creating brand identity - the
human mind is extremely responsive to visual stimuli, we
remember colours and shapes before words, so each and
every colour will affect your brand differently. The shade
and tone of your colour also play a part.
Some commonly used colours and their meanings:
• Pink: Feminine, Love, Tranquil
• Red: Power, Passion
• Orange: Health, Energy, Warmth, Excitement
• Green: Nature, Soothing, Money, Growth
• Blue: Peace, Loyal, Clean, Trust
• Purple: Magic, Creativity, Royalty
• White: Purity, Cleanliness, Simplicity
• Black: Power, Sophistication
• Brown: Rural, Outdoors, Masculine
Another link for brand identity is your tagline/slogan.
Keep the tagline simple and easy to remember, it needs
to remain short since the tagline is typically incorporated
into the logo design, as well as all marketing collateral.
The most important thing with brand identity is
consistency - make sure every piece of material you send
out in regards to your business is consistent and in line
with the brand identity you have created. Consistency
will make your brand better, easier to use, and practically
invincible. Changing elements of your brand including
fonts and colours can be the most damaging and
confusing to your business.
Branding is an essential part of creating a successful
business, reap the rewards that come along with it.
THE FESTIVE SEASON, YOUR
SUCCESS ALL WRAPPED UP.
It’s that time of year, it might not feel
like it, but it is - Woolies have mince
pies and tinsel and Christmas trees
adorn the shopping aisles. So the
question for you is are you feeling
financially Festive? No? Not Sure?
It’s too early to think of a Christmas
Party! ...Think again!
First off get out of the mindset that
it’s “just a Christmas party”. What it
is, is the perception of your company
in the eyes of your employees. The
question isn’t can you afford to have
one, it’s more like can you afford not
to. Christmas parties give you the
opportunity to thank your team or
your staff for what they have achieved
and to reflect over the previous year.
They give you the chance to do this
without showing favouritism for
individual awards and festive part can
provide an ideal platform for staff to
bond in an out of office environment.
Company Culture doesn’t just happen,
it’s a reflection of how valued each
employee feels within the organisation.
A good and well organised Christmas
party is a great way to show your
gratitude and provide a positive
launch for the business year ahead.
Good organisation, a proper venue
and, debatably, a decent budget can
enthuse and smooth and galvanise a
workforce all at the same time. In fact
the better the event the less likely it is to
end in photocopier debauchery or loss
of dignity through over indulgence. A
well executed party will be a talking
point for staff long after it is over, so
good planning and organisation are
key. If you are under resourced, or
just plain busy get some professional
help, most hotels and venues will have
a function co-ordinator who will be
well versed in what is required, and
very often will be able to help with
all aspects of creating a good party,
memorable for all the right reasons.
There’s also options like cruises, reef
trips, paintball, bunjy jumping - we
are spoiled for choice, but book early
to ensure you get your first preference!
Have fun, it’s Christmas... well, nearly!
WONDERFUL
If a business can bloom, Bloom is almost in full flower. Bursting with vitality,
founder Emma Lodge is the personification of Bloom.
“It all started in 2007, when a friend
at work developed breast cancer, and I
just felt I had to do something to help
her.
“So I organised the Pink Ribbon High
Tea event at the Shangri La Hotel,
says Emma. “It was a huge success.”
“From there the event became
my creative outlet and the more
I networked with women, heard
touching personal stories and the
journeys endured, the more I felt
compelled to carry on and go further.
“I became intrigued about finding “the
cure” and threw myself into research
and study on cancer, says Emma.
“That was when my life took a
complete U-turn. I started pulling
cleaners out of the cupboard and food
out of the pantry, reading labels and
discovering that we actually live in a
toxic world.
“My entire focus went from reactive
to proactive,” says Emma. Bloom was
taking seed.
“I realised an urgency to shift our
focus towards prevention, as there
are many simple measures we can
implement in our homes right now
to prevent illness, all we need is the
information and knowledge so that we
can make our own informed choices.
“I started a bus tour called The
Organic Experience, taking people to
the Atherton Tablelands, meeting the
growers, experiencing all the sensual
delights of freshly grown, organic
food. I wanted people’s senses to be
heightened to pursue wellness through
food.
“At the same time I met incredible
people, and discovered an amazing
array of natural health products and
services we have in the Far North.
I wanted to create an event where
people could experience and learn
without the hard slog and research I
had gone through” says Emma. Bloom
was born.
Bloom started in 2012 at the Shangri
La Hotel, moving to Cairns Colonial
Club in 2014. In 2015, Emma took
time to concentrate on learning about
emotional and spiritual wellbeing,
which she has now brought into
the Bloom concept of loving and
respecting the body to see the flow on
effect into all areas of life.
“
It’s been
a wonderful journey,
like putting the
pieces of a jigsaw
together in pursuit of
wellness
”
Bloom returns to the Cairns Colonial
Club on 8th October. An absolute
must on everyone’s calendar.
“I’m very protective of my integrity
and my duty of care to those who put
their trust in Bloom to change their
lives, so I am very particular about
who exhibits. The exhibitors all have
that same belief in their products,
pure, non toxic ingredients,” says
Emma.
It’s not difficult to understand why
Emma Lodge describes her Bloom
journey as the petals of a flower
opening up, and it’s not hard to see
why people tell Emma that Bloom has
changed their lives.
Pilates
&YOUR GENERAL
WELLBEING!
Janine Noopetch
I am sure you have
all heard of the term
“Pilates”, but are you left
wondering, “What is it?”
Joseph Pilates, who was one amazing man
extremely ahead of his time, developed Pilates
during World War One. He was working with
injured soldiers, and created resistance exercises
using bedsprings, which led to his invention
of the Pilates Reformer (a bed like apparatus)
and the Cadillac or Trapeze Table, which also
resembles a hospital bed, along with other Pilates
Apparatus.
The wonderful thing about Pilates is that anyone
can do it. Recently, I had my 80 years old
Stepfather and 73 yrs old Mother attend Mat
Pilates and Reformer Sessions while on holidays
and visiting from NZ. My 10yrs old son and 12
years old daughter are also regular practisers
of Pilates with no prompting from there mum,
they can really feel the difference in their bodies.
There really is no age barrier and taking up
Pilates is going to benefit you in incredible ways.
Pilates lengthens and strengthens all the major
muscle groups while also maintaining a balance
of the smaller muscle groups. You are also
focusing on strengthening your deep abdominal
muscles and pelvic floor muscles which in turn
leads to a stronger and more flexible spine,
helping to alleviate any back pain. Pilates is also
incorporates the Mind body and spirit. You can
walk into a Pilates session feeling rushed, stressed
and tense and walk out and hour later feeling
refreshed and a sense of calm.
Pilates is completely low impact and there is a
focus on QUALITLY rather than Quantity. The
deeper you get into the practice the more precise
you become in your movements and exercises.
This creates an even deeper challenge. Don’t be
fooled you will sweat and your body with work in
a way you haven’t experienced before. You will
love it! Your posture will change and you will feel
stronger throughout your core and body.
EVERY SESSION WORKS AND
INCORPORATES THE
10 PRINCIPLES OF PILATES
• Awareness
• Balance
• Breathe
• Centre
• Concentration
• Control
• Efficiency
• Flow
• Precision
• Harmony
Men and woman that participate in regular
Pilates Practice become more in tune with their
bodies and have more body awareness. The
amazing thing about Pilates is you can take the
principles of Pilates into your everyday life, your
gym workout, your gardening, etc
HOW DO I START PILATES?
Don’t be nervous to give Pilates a try. You need
no prior knowledge of Pilates and don’t stress if
you feel like you have no flexibility or strength.
A Pilates session with give you a balanced
workout and the use of the Reformer or Cadillac
equipment allows your back to be supported.
You will be surprised how quickly your body
responds and your flexibility and strength
improves.
It is recommended if you are looking at
participating in Pilates Equipment classes that
you complete at least 3 One on One Sessions
to learn the foundation of the Pilates Breathing
Technique which is practiced in all classes, and
the basic fundamental exercises. You will then be
able to go into a Semi Private class, which in our
beautiful air-conditioned studio in Smithfield is
up to 4 persons only
So there is no better time than now to pick up the
phone and book yourself in for your 1st Pilates
session. Most studios offer an introduction
package, so find a studio near you and give it a
go. You won’t look back!
As a travel agent, Philip Slater is often asked how he survives in
business when there are online agencies and airlines offering direct
services to the public. According to the Director of the Travel
Lounge, established in 2005 as Cairns’ first mobile travel agency, the
answer is simple.
“We ask questions, we listen to our clients and we offer suggestions
based on those answers. I have travelled extensively throughout my
life and can use that personal experience to guide my clients to the
perfect holiday that suits them,” he says.
“While the Internet is a fantastic tool for finding specific information,
when it comes to making a memorable holiday nothing beats
personal interaction with a travel agent that has already had the
experience and can think outside the box.”
With the added advantage of being available in an emergency 24
hours a day 7 days a week to provide relevant advice or reroute trips
if necessary, the ATAS accredited Travel Lounge is a one stop shop
able to offer clients worldwide adventure travel, cruising, holiday
travel, touring, car hire, accommodation, travel insurance and
currency.
A fundamentally service orientated company, the Travel Lounge
is an associate member of Helloworld, and focuses on not only
arranging hassle free holidays, but also building connections and
long term networks both locally and overseas.
When Philip established the Travel Lounge with his business partner
Kevan Pearce back in 2005, they made their first booking in a
client’s home using an Internet dongle and back up telephone cable
connected to their client’s phone line.
“I cringe when I think of the times I had to ask clients if I could cut
them off for half an hour while I used their dial up,” laughs Philip.
While Philip’s personal favourite travel destination is a toss up
Ladies Boutique and Annie’s
AT THE BEACH
There’s reason for a double
celebration for lovers of fashion
at Annie’s Ladies Boutique
in Palm Cove.
Firstly, Annie Gillow, owner of the well-loved boutique, has
just opened a sister shop - Annie’s at the Beach - to cater for
the growing demand. This larger shop is packed with a huge
selection of fantastic designs for women of all sizes.
The new site, on ground level at the Peppers Beach Club
group of shops on Williams Esplanade, is just a short way
from Annie’s original boutique, which is located upstairs,
above the Palm Cove Post Office.
“Many of my customers shared their frustration since I closed
my Cairns’ store, saying they missed my large store where
the choices were endless,” Annie said. “So, here I am again
providing a large store.”
Annie will expand her much-loved selection of popular styles
with beautiful silks, designer kaftans, clever separates, alwayspopular
cotton dresses, plus jewelry and extra comfy shoes.
She’ll also be stocking swimwear for sizes 6 to 24.
“I love to give my customers a range of choices and this now
includes swimwear,” Annie said. “You will find the latest Baku
designs, a clever Australian-designed label which has been at
the forefront of Australia’s swimwear industry for at least
10 years and consistently providing for women of all sizes,
shapes and body types.”
In addition, Annie’s stocks what she calls the ‘tummy tuckers’
and says these one- piece swimsuits actually make a woman
look two sizes smaller.
“I honestly didn’t believe it until I saw it for myself,” she said.
The second reason for customers to celebrate is Annie will
soon be stocking a brand she has loved and worn for many
years - Pygmee.
“I would describe this brand as casual stretch-cotton retro
style that is like no other,” said Annie (who is pictured here
in one of the green retro styles). “These are quirky and head
turning, and I am excited to have both ladies and girls wear
from Pygmee.” The new brand will arrive later this month.
“There is always exciting things happening as my existing
customers know, and I promise nothing less at Annie’s at the
Beach,” Annie said.
“I promise double the fun and choices, so that customers
will love everything in their wardrobes and receive many
compliments when wearing their perfect pieces from Annie’s.”
If you have a dicky heart, you go to a heart specialist. Your
diesel motor is the heart of your car. Are you going to
DEM is a local family business specialising in diesel
performance and fuel economy solutions.
The huge workshop in Edmonton is full of vehicles, very
good lookin’ vehicles. That’s always a good sign. Where
there’s a workshop full of valuable cars, you know people are
trusting this mechanic to do the best thing by their treasured
investment.
David is a perfectionist. He knows every client is receiving
the best possible personalised attention. It’s how he’s grown
his business, which has moved into larger premises recently
“On certain models we see an improvement of 20% in fuel
economy and massive reductions in long term maintenance
costs. Our focus is on preventive initiatives instead of reactive
maintenance, and word is getting around that we are saving
our customers a great deal of money.
“Diesel vehicles these days have pretty much enough power,
but we can still achieve considerably more power, and at the
same time greatly increased fuel economy, picking up an extra
100km a tank in many cases.
“My own car was especially heavy on fuel, and I’ve seen a
20% increase in fuel economy. Where I was achieving 520ks
per 68 litres, I’m now seeing over 600km.
The by-product of improving diesel performance is a massive
reduction in rubbish being pumped back through the motor,
resulting in increased efficiency and better fuel economy.
Because waste is not being pushed back through the intake
of the motor, there’s a huge reduction in carbon and slush
build up.
“Some vehicles have to have the whole top end of the motor
pulled apart and cleaned out every 30,000km, which can
cost up to $2000, an expense no one wants, and that we can
prevent,” says David.
“This is what DEM is here to prevent. At the same time,
your vehicle’s significantly improved performance and fuel
economy is a bonus,” David adds.
Cats of the Month
Helmut Geyer is the man behind Aquariums in
Cairns, and the person who has helped create
some of the most stunning artworks in this city.
His business specialises in crafting custom-built
tropical and marine fish tanks and ponds, and can
provide almost all of your aquarium needs. They
stock and breed all manner of popular and exotic
fish, and a diverse range of aquatic plants.
Helmut’s interest in fish started as a child, when
his father gave him his first fish tank, but waned
during his teenage years and as he embarked on a
busy career as an executive chef. It wasn’t until he
was in his 30’s and bought a house in Cairns which
had a fish pond, that his interest was re-ignited.
Working long hours as a chef, he found having an
aquarium the perfect way to switch off and relax.
After buying multiple fish tanks, he started making
his own, acknowledging “I am a self-taught fish
tank maker!”
After spending a few years juggling chef work
with breeding fish and building custom fish
tanks, Helmut decided to concentrate on fish and
although the first few years were tough going,
Aquariums in Cairns has now racked up 15 years
in business and has built a reputation for quality
work which is affordable. The business has seen
growth supplying both commercial and private
aquariums and encompasses maintenance of
freshwater marine aquariums, ponds, restaurant
and wholesaler’s live seafood tanks, as well as
offering a vacation care service looking after your
fish while you are away on long trips.
Helmut’s understanding of water was significantly
improved on such a trip to Austria, when he
caught up with an ex-colleague who showed him
the aquarium he had up in his attic, which was
“An absolute ripper of a tank!”, and lent Helmut a
book on water chemistry. He spent the rest of his
Holiday Care, Fish and Accessories for all your Aquarium needs
holiday reading the book and the first thing he did
when he came back to Cairns was invest in a good
quality filter which made a world of difference.
Most people think a filter takes out all the bits
in the water, but it’s actual job is to convert the
poisonous gases like ammonia, which is created
from the breakdown of organic matter into nonpoisonous
nitrate. Helmut explains “What cleans
the water is not the filter material, it’s the bacteria
that grow on the filter material and the more
porous the material, the more bacteria grow and
the healthier your water becomes.”
Apart from having a good filter, you also need
a light to be able to see your fish. While you
might think that sunlight is the obvious choice,
Helmut advises that sunlight “encourages algae
to grow’, and the fish have no need for it. Above
all, Helmut advises potential fish owners to have
realistic expectations. Like all pets, you have to be
prepared that there will be unexpected costs, and
it’s a good idea to educate yourself before starting
your aquarium – there are hundreds of YouTube
videos that walk you through everything you need
to know to ensure that you get the setup that is
When Nathan Archer left school, he went straight into his
ideal weekend job in his dad’s new business venture, Cairns
Paintball. Within a decade he had bought out his dad and
has headed the business for the past 6 years, although he says,
“It’s not really work, it’s an awesome way to spend the day
and I get to enjoy doing something I love while stirring all
our players up a bit! Everybody comes up here to have a good
time so the atmosphere is really fun.”
Nathan and the Cairns Paintball team run six fields out at
the Billabong in Kuranda. Each field is set up to facilitate
specific games, and they either rebuild or open a new field
every year. This year also saw them open a different kind of
field. “For the past 10 years I’d been trying to get paintball
mobile” and that dream was finally fulfilled with the arrival
of the ‘BATTLEDOME’ Portable Paintball Arena! The only
mobile, inflatable enclosure operating in the country made its
debut as part of the 2016 RACQ North Queensland Games
earlier this year and is already being booked for events and
private hire locally as well as to remote areas like Cooktown
and Weipa.
With over 2000 tropical butterflies, explore
the largest flight aviary in Australia and
enjoy free guided laboratory tours.
There’s a group who are finishing their safety briefing as I
arrive, and I’m pleasantly surprised to find out it’s a family
celebrating their daughter’s Sweet Sixteen. One of the best
things about paintball is how inclusive it is – whatever your
age or gender – if you can move your finger, you can have a
great time at paintball!
competitions are hotly contested and there have been pushes
for inclusion in the Olympic Games.
Cairns Paintball has over 100 regular players, plus another
60 in the VIP club which fields the FNQ Fury team, who are
currently ranked in the top 5 of the semi-pro division of the
Super 7’s Paintball Series. For Nathan, paintball provides one
of the best adrenaline rushes to be had in sport, and he loves
seeing that moment when people let go of their hesitation
and jump into the game, “You can almost see the crazy
switch getting flicked!”. And I can’t resist sharing this pearl
of a quote, “Just from observation, girls tend to be slightly
more intelligent, and will think one step ahead.” The VIP
Club is open to any locals who are interested in developing
strategic thinking while running around the bush having a
brilliant time!
Oral communication skills are vital in every facet of our lives;
making friends, interacting with family and strangers, building
relationships, getting and keeping a good job. Drama is a
wonderful way for children to learn to speak with confidence.
It develops children’s imagination, allowing them to think
creatively. The ability to be innovative, to think outside the
square, is a strong foundation skill for budding entrepreneurs
and leaders.
Most importantly, children and teenagers just want to have
FUN. And that’s something of which there is no shortage at
The Young Company (TYC), especially during their school
holiday programs.
“There’s so many ways drama and performance can benefit
the young ones while they’re having a great time, says
vivacious and animated TYC Founder and Director Leigh
Boswell, who has performed on stage since age three, and has
worked in theatre in Cairns, Brisbane and the UK.
The Team at TYC also includes Artistic Director, Michael
Elliott, Artist in Residence, Amelia Pegrum and Danielle
Aquilina and Production Manager, Evelyn McGuinness.
Their vast array of knowledge, skill and experience in the
performing arts certainly contributes to their success. This
year, TYC won the Cairns Post Hit Award for Best Arts
Collective.
“As the children learn about, and take on the character of
their part, they become more socially aware, and achieve
greater understanding and empathy of others,” says Leigh.
“They also learn about teamwork: proactive sharing and
caring, flexibility, cooperation and consideration, and to
appreciate the benefits of different skills, personalities and
opinions in their team, while gaining confidence to have
input and voice their ideas.
“Through drama games and activities, children are introduced
to a variety of real and imagined situations, igniting interest
in the wider world, and making them more knowledgeable
and inquisitive while increasing the production of neural
pathways through live arts elements such as lights, sound and
them how to handle different issues, like bullying or arguing.
Far North Queensland has always been known
for its natural beauty. From lush rainforests to
tropical beaches, our region offers a diversity of
environments housing all manner of spectacular
flowers and plant life.
To celebrate the splendour of our local flowers and foliage,
the region will be taking part in the inaugural Australian
Flowers Week which will be celebrated nationally from the
17 – 25 September.
The aim of the celebration is to recognise the importance
of our Australian flower industry from growers, through to
wholesalers and finally florists.
Treasurer of the Queensland Flower Association and
owner of Tropical Blooms Pty Ltd at Gordonvale, Jason
Nealon, hopes the initiative will be a great way to introduce
Cairns residents to their own healthy local flower industry.
Mr Nealon believes the far north Queensland flower
community is an important part of the fabric of the florist
scene and Australian Flowers Week is a great opportunity
for locals to support the important niche market in Cairns.
During the week-long celebration, there will be initiatives
held in conjunction with major shopping centres such as
Stocklands and approximately 20 participating florists
from Port Douglas to Tully will be running a competition
where anyone who makes a purchase can go into a draw
to win one of ten $100 flower arrangements featuring the
regions locally grown flowers.
Organisers are also planning “pay it forward” flower
giveaways in multiple locations around Cairns which they
hope will remind people of the joy flowers can bring.
“The pay it forward idea is our way of saying here’s our
gift to you, now next time you have to give a gift, please
think of us,” Mr Nealon said.
Giving flowers as a gift is an age old tradition and
whether they are used for courtship, birthdays, weddings,
anniversaries and even funerals, the act of giving flowers
sends a special message to the recipient. Despite this, the
race for technological evolution has dealt a blow to the
flower industry as it has to many other retail sectors. In
our search for convenience it has become easier to present
people with gift cards essentially making them responsible
for purchasing their own gift.
Mr Nealon and his helpers are hoping the Australian
Flowers Week will be an important opportunity to remind
the Cairns community of the beauty and availability of
our locally grown flowers and foliage, prompting them to
avoid buying online.
WORDS BY SHERRIE LARSEN
“We would like people to walk into a florist and experience
the artistry involved. Flowers literally put smiles on
people’s faces, that’s the business we are in.”
What’s better than Flowers and Fashion? The combination of the two, of course! This year, Stockland Cairns is excited to showcase the best of Spring Fashion whilst supporting Australian Flower week.
Stockland Cairns Marketing Manager, Molly Pfohl, said: We are very excited to be supporting Australian Flower week in 2016. This is an important initiative to recognise the amazing local high-quality
flowers we have in Cairns and to pay credit to the floristry talent we have across the region. This year at Stockland Cairns we will be showcasing the best of spring fashion while also showcasing the
best of floral artistry. Customers are encouraged not only to enjoy the fashion parade but also to see the beautiful blooms from Cairns’ local growers and florists on display.”
Stockland Cairns will host Spring Fashion parades in centre from the 21st – 24th of September at 11am and 1pm daily and will incorporate local floral displays
and bouquets with a chance for attendees to take some home with them.

Everyone’s living requirements vary as we
adjust to our continually changing lifestyle
and family. Statistics show that we tend to
move homes on an average of every 5 years
which reflects the changes in our family’s
needs.
Sometimes our house requirements increase
when we start having a family of our own.
As a young couple you may have been
living in a 2 bedroom unit before having the
kids and find you have to upsize to a 3 or 4
bedroom home to allow space for the family
to grow. Building a new, larger family home
minimises the maintenance costs over the
time the family is expanding. It also lets us
plan the design to cater for the change in our
family’s needs.
Some people may find they are now ‘empty
nesters’ because the kids have all grown up
and started their own families. I know a lot
of families where Mum and Dad still have
the large house that screams for lots of fix
ups and maintenance and of course, lots
of cleaning. As we get a little older the last
thing we want to do is spend all weekend
cleaning the house and doing the gardening.
Most people still want their own private and
secure space so a good option is to build a
smaller home, on a smaller block of land.
A smaller home has much lower day to day
running costs and can leave you time and
money to do the things you didn’t have time
for when you were busy raising the family.
The more space you have the more stuff you
find to fill it up!!
It’s worth looking at what is important to
each of us in our current family requirements
and whether our home is able to cope with
any changes. If not, maybe you should be
looking for a home that will cope with those
changes for more than 5 years. The best
way to do that is build a home designed for
your family and for our climate, to make it
practical and comfortable.
There are some subdivisons in and around
Cairns with fantastic facilities like walking
and bicycle trails, parks, gardens, BBQs and
more. Ask around some of the new estates
and see what combinations of land sizes are
available and you may be surprised what’s
on offer.
We have some great House & Land
packages in many areas throughout Cairns
ranging from first home owners to homes
for retirees, so drop into our display home
It
is so different, so
spectacular in
its individuality,
a refreshing
change for Cairns.
“We are very happy with the
end result, but this is just a tiny
sample of all the many different
styles planned in keeping
with our unique, sustainable
and personalised building
methodology,” says Vickie.
“Ideas abound and the sky’s our
limit – we’re sourcing fantastic
products, and achieving
amazing results by thinking, and
sourcing, outside the square.
“Wherever possible, we utilise
local suppliers. We’re delighting
in finding amazing locals with
unmatchable quality of raw
materials on our doorsteps, like
our beautiful old Queensland
maple that was tucked away in
Kuranda,” says Vickie.
Warm country meets cool
industrial in this stunning house
of perfect combinations and
creativity. Superb feature walls
comprising gently stained pallet
wood meet rustic concrete
floors polished and polished yet
again for longevity of sheen and
to achieve non-porosity and a
truly natural ambience.
Exterior quality Hardie
panels give the appearance
of tempered concrete, lining
the wall behind a neat indoor
garden running the length of
the living area. High louvres
combine with opposing doors
and windows to draw breezes to
naturally cool the interior in the
tropical summer.
“Available local supplies don’t
always match our vision, so
we’ve been very creative in
sourcing materials, requiring
a degree of flexibility in
design. But sometimes, perfect
resources just reveal themselves
in the oddest places, and it
all helps in achieving a more
affordable high-end finish.
‘and if we cant find it, we make
it, the front door handles came
from scrap steel . Look at them
now, really sexy!” Vickie says.
The solid, gloss black handles
are nothing short of fabulous.
“We’ve aimed to create a
beautiful, liveable space. It’s an
insulated timber frame, which is
sustainably produced, covered
in cypress, naturally termite
resistant, and weathers to a
beautiful silver over time.
Space, light and air abound.
Subtle hues and the occasional
splash of vivid colour blend
perfectly with natural elements,
combining with the tactile
delights of cleverly selected
materials and textiles used to
perfection to create a truly
exquisite, yet wholly practical
living space.
LIFE Garden
ARCHITECTURAL
Splendours
with Matt Mitchley
Agave: The plant
genus Agave conjures
up thoughts of spiky
desert plants that in most
people’s minds will try
to attack you every time
you pass them. This
may be true with some,
however there are a few
less-aggressive and soft
leaved species that both
suit our climate and
our desire to have the
most fashionable feature
plants for our gardens.
Below are a few top
favourites, based on their
overall attractiveness,
architectural qualities and the ones that are right now in hot
demand in today’s modern landscapes.
leaves gives it the look and appearance of an Australian grass
tree. It quickly grows to its adult form and once mature, it is
very long lived with little to no ongoing maintenance. Like
almost all agaves, the hedgehog agave is extremely hardy with
low water requirements and will thrive in areas where there is
lots of radiant heat. Around pools, concrete driveways and the
harsh western sun that burns many of our plants throughout
the summer months, this species will retain its vigour. It is an
absolute winner in a feature pot and also in clumps of three or
more, densely planted for high impact.
Another recent arrival is the Agave potatorum. This relatively
small species does have big attitude with sharp spiky tips,
though its form has to be one of the most incredible in the
entire plant kingdom. Its perfectly symmetrical leaf structure
with neat rosettes of bluegrey
leaves retains showy
imprints of past leaves as
they grow. It sits proud
amongst any landscape
and is a real show stopper.
Lastly, it’s hard not to
mention the pride of
all the agave family, the
much-loved soft leaf
Agave attenuata. With its
blue-green, completely
harmless curved
leaves, it graces many
landscapes worldwide.
It is completed suited to
almost all environments
from a soft border plant to rock gardens, banks and slopes. With
an almost unlimited number of uses within the landscape, this
plant truly is a winner. There are many other suitable species
in the Agave family for our tropical climate, from solitary
specimens to mass clumping varieties, some that reach only the
size of a tennis ball to others the size of a car, so there really is
a plant for every location.
their lives, so researching the species you wish to keep will help
quite unpredictable, so if the sole reason for owning one is to see
REFURBISHING
Don’t Put It Off!!
The biggest hurdle is to convince the
owners of the Resort or Unit/Home
that it need not be too expensive or
difficult but it needs to be done.
Otherwise the
potential to rent/lease
or sell will rapidly
decline and the
inevitable downward
spiral in return and
capital realisation.
All units - holiday and
permanent - suffer
considerable wear and
tear. A wise move is
to consider a ‘soft’
refurb every 2 - 3 years
which hopefully can
stave off a full refurb
for 7-8 years. If not
done a full refurb
is usually necessary
every 5 years. Soft
refurbs have definite
advantages - not least
the small amount of
downtime to complete
the refurb. It is
usually a case of “out
with the old and in
with the new”! no
great holdups and
offers consistency in
quality,design and
colour. Cost can
be contained to a
relatively modest
investment.
We can help with the
current trends, market
needs and what is
available.
Do not delay as to put
off a needed refurb is
a guaranteed recipe
to ensure a more
expensive option
down the track as well
as declining returns
in the meantime.
We would love the
opportunity to meet
with you and provide
an obligation free
quote. This will
ensure you work
within your budget to
create a fantastic new
look and take the stress
out of the refurb by
organising everything
for you.
