Summary
This pre-study has been carried out jointly by the Swedish Environmental
Protection Agency, National Heritage Board and National Maritime
Museums. Commissioned by the first two authorities, the national Maritime
Museums have compiled a list of valuable submarine cultural heritage sites
and mapped how they coincide with nature protection areas.
The study will serve as a knowledge base for the continued work by Swedish
EPA, The National Heritage Board and the County Administrative
Boards within the Environmental Quality Objective A Balanced Marine Environment,
Flourishing Coastal Areas and Archipelagos.
A total of 25 areas of varying sizes and character are described in the report.
The ambition has been to select sites offering a great variety of content and geographical
spread. Examples of submarine cultural heritage areas with a clear
historical context have been identified through existing central registers.
Descriptions of the 25 selected heritage sites also include natural values and
protected environments in the immediate surroundings. Links between natural
and cultural submarine values, e.g. biological cultural heritage, demonstrate the
need for increased collaboration between the two spheres of interest.
To gain a better picture of changes to the underwater environment, case
studies are needed, not least showing the impact of trawling and diving activities
on the natural and cultural heritage sites.
