fouNdAtioN<br />

The Foundation was established<br />

in 1917 by K. A.<br />

Wallenberg and his wife <strong>Alice</strong><br />

with an initial endowment of SEK<br />

20 m. They continued to develop<br />

the Foundation over the next three<br />

decades, during which they gradually<br />

transferred the main part of<br />

their accumulated assets.<br />

The purpose of the Foundation is to<br />

”promote scientific research, teaching<br />

and/or education that is beneficial<br />

to the Kingdom of Sweden”.<br />

The majority of all grants in <strong>2011</strong>, a<br />

total of SEK 1,182 m., was disbursed<br />

to Swedish universities<br />

and academies in<br />

form of project grants<br />

and grants to support<br />

individuals<br />

and equipment.<br />

The main<br />

part of the<br />

Foundation’s<br />

net assets are<br />

directly or indirectly<br />

invested<br />

in listed shares<br />

in Swedish industry.<br />

The<br />

Foundation’s investment<br />

policy<br />

states that its assets<br />

shall be placed as<br />

long-term investments<br />

at low risk. In addition,<br />

the assets shall yield a longterm<br />

solid return in order to<br />

KAW approved grants totalling SeK 1,182 million in <strong>2011</strong>. during the past five years, the foundation<br />

has granted the total of SeK 4.8 billion for various projects, mainly at Swedish universities.<br />

The largest grants in <strong>2011</strong>:<br />

Wallenberg Academy fellows, a program to support young promising researchers, SeK 185 m.<br />

Wallenberg Scholars, program to support and encourage some of the most successful researchers in Sweden, SeK 150 m.<br />

Wallenberg Wood Science Center, research support to the center: 2012-2013, SeK 80 m.<br />

26 research projects totalling SeK 752 m.<br />

secure resources for the distribution<br />

of grants.<br />

The Foundation’s everyday activities<br />

are managed by the Executive<br />

Director. The Board of Directors has<br />

the ultimate responsibility for the<br />

Foundation.<br />

Assets are managed by means of direct<br />

ownership, as well as through<br />

a management and consultancy<br />

agreement, with Foundation Asset<br />

Management Sweden AB. The administration<br />

of the Foundation<br />

and the grants are managed<br />

by Foundation Administration<br />

Management Sweden AB.<br />

The Board Members of the<br />

Foundation are Peter Wallenberg,<br />

Chairman; Peter Wallenberg Jr,<br />

Vice Chairman; Göran Sandberg,<br />

Executive Director, Bo Sundqvist,<br />

Representative of the Principals<br />

Council and the non-executive directors<br />

Jan Holmgren, Björn Hägglund,<br />

Michael Treschow, Axel Wallenberg<br />

(passed away September 11, <strong>2011</strong>),<br />

Jacob Wallenberg and Marcus<br />

Wallenberg. The Board convenes<br />

four times a year.<br />

In accordance with the<br />

Foundation’s statutes,<br />

the scientific academies<br />

and larger universities<br />

in Sweden<br />

form the socalled<br />

Principals<br />

Council, which<br />

appoints one<br />

board member<br />

and the auditors.<br />

Over the last<br />

ten years the<br />

Foundation has an<br />

annual grant rate of<br />

more than SEK 900 m.<br />

The ambition is to maintain<br />

an even, and over time increasing,<br />

level of grants.
