The Foundation was established
in 1917 by K. A.
Wallenberg and his wife Alice
with an initial endowment of SEK
20 m. They continued to develop
the Foundation over the next three
decades, during which they gradually
transferred the main part of
their accumulated assets.
The purpose of the Foundation is to
”promote scientific research, teaching
and/or education that is beneficial
to the Kingdom of Sweden”.
The majority of all grants in 2011, a
total of SEK 1,182 m., was disbursed
to Swedish universities
and academies in
form of project grants
and grants to support
individuals
and equipment.
The main
part of the
Foundation’s
net assets are
directly or indirectly
invested
in listed shares
in Swedish industry.
The
Foundation’s investment
policy
states that its assets
shall be placed as
long-term investments
at low risk. In addition,
the assets shall yield a longterm
solid return in order to
KAW approved grants totalling SeK 1,182 million in 2011. during the past five years, the foundation
has granted the total of SeK 4.8 billion for various projects, mainly at Swedish universities.
The largest grants in 2011:
Wallenberg Academy fellows, a program to support young promising researchers, SeK 185 m.
Wallenberg Scholars, program to support and encourage some of the most successful researchers in Sweden, SeK 150 m.
Wallenberg Wood Science Center, research support to the center: 2012-2013, SeK 80 m.
26 research projects totalling SeK 752 m.

secure resources for the distribution
of grants.
The Foundation’s everyday activities
are managed by the Executive
Director. The Board of Directors has
the ultimate responsibility for the
Foundation.
Assets are managed by means of direct
ownership, as well as through
a management and consultancy
agreement, with Foundation Asset
Management Sweden AB. The administration
of the Foundation
and the grants are managed
by Foundation Administration
Management Sweden AB.
The Board Members of the
Foundation are Peter Wallenberg,
Chairman; Peter Wallenberg Jr,
Vice Chairman; Göran Sandberg,
Executive Director, Bo Sundqvist,
Representative of the Principals
Council and the non-executive directors
Jan Holmgren, Björn Hägglund,
Michael Treschow, Axel Wallenberg
(passed away September 11, 2011),
Jacob Wallenberg and Marcus
Wallenberg. The Board convenes
four times a year.
In accordance with the
Foundation’s statutes,
the scientific academies
and larger universities
in Sweden
form the socalled
Principals
Council, which
appoints one
board member
and the auditors.
Over the last
ten years the
Foundation has an
annual grant rate of
more than SEK 900 m.
The ambition is to maintain
an even, and over time increasing,
level of grants.
