The Road to Jönköping
Wednesday 17th July. Visit Rosenfors Arena to hear impressions and experiences.
Thursday 18th July. Arrive in Oskarshamn in time to see the campsite open.
Friday 19th July. Familiarise myself with Småland’s coastal terrain before setting
up the stand for O-Ringen Jönköping 2025.
Arriving early certainly has its
charms. Seeing an empty field
being transformed, whether into
an arena or a campsite. Strolling
around places that could feel somewhat
desolate, but in the knowledge that in a
few days’ time they will be thronging with
people. The air is heavy with expectation.
The people you speak to are full of curiosity.
Above all, there’s fellowship and joy.
The intensity rises. I enjoy a beautiful
opening ceremony and a record-breaking
Bagheera Relay. I return to Rosenfors, now a
fully functioning arena with crowds the size
of which this small industrial community
has never seen before. I receive politicians
and officials from Jönköping municipality,
who are taking the chance to experience an
O-Ringen live. It might look like chaos from
the outside but there’s a structure to it all
that’s familiar to us orienteers. I manage a
few stints meeting competitors at our stand.
I help out by answering a range of questions
and listening to ideas and feedback.
Saturday 27th July. The final stage. I start
early (a single stage start... otherwise I
wouldn’t have been starting so early). As always,
I start with the hope of flying through
the forest while being in control of my orienteering.
The first control is exactly where
it should be. To the second control I know
where I am but could have been a bit more
accurate. After that, let’s just say it was a bit
hit and miss. My mind wanders. Next year
is our turn. The enormity of it all hits home.
I’m definitely not focused on orienteering in
the present moment.
And now, humbly, we take the baton. We
thank the Småland Coast for a well-organised
event, and we applaud the huge number
of volunteers who have worked their socks
off so that the rest of us could enjoy a memorable
holiday week. Sunday 20th July 2025.
IMPRESSIONS
Good 51 %
Thank you Smålandskusten!
O-Ringen returned to a more traditional
format, with an O-Ringen City
featuring both a campsite and O-Ringen
Square. There were some classic
O-Ringen arenas, although Stage 3
at Gunnarsö was quite compact. We
hope you had a great experience – all
19 200 of you who shared our week
on the Småland Coast!
A few sustainability points that
we’re especially proud of:
• As an event, O-Ringen has very low CO 2
emissions compared with many other
sports. Most of our carbon emissions
come from competitors travelling to and
from O-Ringen
• Most of our suppliers are
environmentally certified, which helps
communication and purchase of
products and services with a lower
environmental impact (Martin & Servera,
Hyrtoaletten, Nobina, Essity, Axima and
others)
• Nobina buses use HVO fuel, meaning
these journeys have a lower
environmental impact
• O-Ringen is good at re-using building
materials. Many materials are re-used
from year to year and those that cannot
be re-used are donated to our volunteer
organisations to be used by them instead.
Only a small amount is thrown away
• Local companies and organisations can
promote themselves at O-Ringen
O-Ringen Smålandskusten 2024 is certified
as an environmentally sustainable event
Photos: Peter Holgersson, all images in this article.
• Very little litter is left after O-Ringen,
whether at each arena, at the campsite
or at O-Ringen Square
• All our soap and cleaning products are
environmentally certified
This year, many people chose to camp at
Döderhultsdalen. Some clubs had to be
flexible and move to different pitches as a
result of heavy rain during the days before
the campsite opened. We hope and believe
that even those who had to use these
back-up pitches had a good time. Our
surveys have told us that we could improve
signage on the campsite, have shorter distances
to toilets and service stations, and
some people found that it was a long way
to the bus stop. However, all the comments
we received about the event buses seem to
indicate that they worked very well.
What did you think we could improve?
• You would like a different and improved
range of goods at our kiosks, for
example in relation to allergies
• You would like our homepage and
communication to work better
• You would like better signage, especially
round O-Ringen Square and the campsite
• You would like more and/or bigger toilet
and service station areas at the campsite,
to avoid queues and long walks
• You would like lower boards by the runin
to help children see better
*Comment from our competitor survey.
In order to be approved as a certified
Sustainable Event in accordance with
the Greentime standard, an event must
have fulfilled a number of mandatory
requirements listed in Greentime’s planning
tool. These requirements constitute
Greentime’s standard and the planning
tool clearly documents what is required
to achieve the mandatory requirements.
These obligatory requirements are verifiable
and answers must be reviewed by an
independent auditor. This audit was carried
out when O-Ringen was held in the
summer. The contents of the standard are
based on the Agenda 2030 Global Goals
for Sustainable Development but build on
collective experience of what is relevant
and feasible for actors in the industry. A
reference group of various actors within
the Swedish sustainability and events
industry has been involved in developing
the criteria, which were then referred to
CERTIFIERAT HÅLLBART EVENEMANG
2024
further industry players for finalisation.
The basic structure of the questions has
been developed by Greentime following
many years of work in the industry,
among other things working with events
companies and organisers, and meeting
places. The reference group, whose members
reflect a wide range of expertise in a
variety of sustainability areas, reviews the
criteria on an annual basis so that the
standard remains up-to-date.
Quotes from competitors
Travelling to
Jönköping
Jönköping is located in the centre of
southern Sweden, with the main artery
of the E4 motorway passing right
through the city. If you choose to arrive
by car there are main roads from all
directions and O-Ringen City at Elmia
is easily accessible from the E4, while
feeling sheltered from the traffic.
It’s around 4 kilometres from the station
(Resecentrum) in central Jönköping to
Elmia. You might choose to walk along the
beautiful shores of Vättern or to use the local
city buses (stadsbusstrafiken), which have
several departures each hour. If you don’t
have access to a car or choose not to use one,
there are alternative ways to get about. The
important thing: you’ll manage O-Ringen
week just fine without a car, while still getting
to training, competitions and activities.
Train – You’ll probably need to make a
connection before arriving at Jönköping
but that will all be worth it when
you look out at the views over Vättern
as the train rolls into Resecentrum.
Long distance bus – Routes
operate from several cities and
stop at Resecentrum.
Orienteering
You can travel to our orienteering stages by
bus or by car. O-Ringen’s stage buses are the
primary option and that’s where we have the
biggest capacity by far. You can choose the
option that works best for you, depending
on where you’re staying.
Whatever your choice, we encourage you
to book your bus tickets and/or parking
passes as soon as possible – it really helps our
planning if we know the rough volumes of
people travelling in each way in good time.
Stage buses
Buses depart to all stages from O-Ringen City
at Elmia. If you’re staying at the O-Ringen
campsite or close by (hotel, other campsite,
other accommodation) you can walk, cycle or
drive to the bus stop. There are around 1,500
parking spaces at Elmia. Parking is free and
you don’t need to book it in advance.
You do, however, need to book your tickets
for stage buses in advance. This applies to all
competitors aged 8 and over. You can book
tickets either per day or for the whole week.
For stages 1, 4 and 5 you will need to prebook
your parking pass. You can purchase
this using our booking portal. No pre-booking
is required for stages 2 and 3 and parking
for these stages is free of charge.
Distances to each arena may be up to a
few kilometres but are often much shorter.
Car
We have limited parking at all our arenas
and you must book and pay for your parking
Please follow the signs for car parking,
to avoid congestion with stage buses. Clear
directions and route maps will be published
at a later date, both at oringen.se and in the
Camping at O-Ringen City
Other accommodation
If you’re looking to camp at O-Ringen 2025 Jönköping,
you’ll find a classic O-Ringen campsite at Elmia
convention centre.
Could this be one of O-Ringen’s most beautiful campsites ever?
With views over Vättern, where on a clear day you can see Visingsö
and refreshing bathing locations right next door to O-Ringen City.
As well as bathing opportunities, you’ll find wonderful Vätternstranden
activities including beach volleyball, football, bowling,
padel and more, all within a kilometre. And that’s before we even
mention the centre of the action, O-Ringen Square, which in Jönköping
will be housed completely indoors.
The city centre is around 4 kilometres away. You can walk or
cycle along the waterside. Local buses stop close by and have frequent
departures.
Get that long table set – it’s time to get together with your neighbours
to discuss today’s route choices while the kids cycle around
outside. You can already reserve one of around 1,800 camping
pitches by booking via our booking portal.
Until 4 th May
After 4 th May
Extra large pitch with electricity 5 500 kr 7 150 kr
Regular pitch with electricity 3 750 kr 4 900 kr
Regular pitch without electricity 2 450 kr 3 200 kr
Small pitch (tent) without electricity 1 250 kr 1 650 kr
Our campsite has a range of pitches both with and
without electricity:
• Extra large pitch 9 x 18 m
• Regular pitch 9 x 9 m
• Small pitch 4.5 x 9 m (for tents without electricity)
It is possible to book camping within a 10-day period
(17 th –27 th July 2025)
The campsite has access to service stations. Some of these will have
both WCs and portable toilets, while others will have only portable
toilets. Laundry areas with cold water, as well as washing machines,
will also be available. Just as at other O-Ringen campsites, please
remember that these facilities are all temporary and can sometimes
feel a little basic.
Please note that we have altered the ordinary booking period
for the campsite to close on 4 th May. This change will continue for
future editions of O-Ringen, to allow us more time to organise the
campsite layout. The layout will ensure wherever possible that you
will be able to camp next to your clubmates, although we cannot
guarantee this when there are many factors and parameters we
must take into account.
After 4 th May, you will still be able to book any pitches at the
campsite that are still available, however these pitches will be situated
wherever available on the campsite.
Hotels, youth hostels, etc.
Would you like a comfortable bed? Or is it a hotel breakfast that
really appeals to you? Would you like to stay near the city centre to
enjoy some evenings out?
Altogether, Jönköping has over 5,000 beds available in hotels and
youth hostels. Around half of these are near the city centre, around
1,000 are close to Elmia and the rest are spread over the wider area.
Chances are, you’ll be able to find something that suits you!
Self-catering accommodation
Private individuals can use O-Ringen’s booking portal to advertise
rental accommodation. This could be anything from villas and flats
to chalets and caravans. Listings are updated when new options become
available, so if you can’t find what you’re looking for straight
away, check again later.
Did you know that…?
• In 2023, 146,197 people lived in Jönköping
municipality, making it the ninth biggest city
in Sweden.
• The biggest building in Jönköping is Göta Court
of Appeal, which has been in use since 1650.
• Jönköping was founded on 18th May and has
the oldest charter in Sweden, from 1284. The
charter granted Jönköping the right to be a
O-Ringen Quiz!
Are you an O-Ringen regular who has taken part in almost
every stage since the dawn of time? Or are you looking
forward to your first O-Ringen adventure? If you’re in the
first category, you’ll definitely know just about everything
there is to know about O-Ringen. Don’t you...? If, on
the other hand, you’re an O-Ringen newbie, this is your
chance to learn a bit more about the world’s biggest
orienteering adventure!
Here is a middle distance with nine controls, in the form of questions
about O-Ringen. The difficulty level is around orange and
the terrain is quick and runnable. In most cases, you can find the
answer somewhere in O-Ringen’s posts and publications. Some,
however, are easier to find than others. In other words, it’s just
like any other orienteering competition – some controls you’ll go
straight to, others you might take a little roundabout route, and in
the worst case there might be a proper mistake or two.
There’s no SportIdent for this competition. Instead, we’ll collect
scores via our social media channels. Look out for posts about this
Quiz on O-Ringen’s Facebook and Instagram pages in October and
November. Good luck!
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beeeeeeep! That’s the start signal and we’re
off, flying past the start kite and up over a hill. In a large re-entrant
you’ll find a marsh and control number 1.
6. The person who has run the most
O-Ringens has competed in 56 out of a
possible 58. How many controls have they
punched in total, during all of these?
1) 2167
X) 2346
2) 2857
Far away, you can hear the race commentary.
Great, you’re nearly at the finish and
it’s going really well. A leg crossing a track,
an open field and then a forest road. Then
up onto the hill and down into control 7.
7
7. Approximately how many competitors
have there been across all O-Ringen
competitions?
1) 853 000
X) 896 000
2) 768 000
So, just two controls left. Run straight
towards a river. But what then? Isn’t there
any good way across? A quick look at the
map and you see you can run to the west.
Quickly out to the road, over the river and
then back into the forest and up the hill
to control 8.
1. In which year was
the first O-Ringen held?
1) 1965
X) 1963
2) 1967
Brilliant! Did you find that control
easily? We continue up the hill,
through a denser area, over a marsh
and then a spur. Tucked away at the
bottom is a crag, control 2.
3
3. How many classes were available at
O-Ringen Smålandskusten 2024?
1) 151
X) 138
2) 146
Okay, take care now. A bit of a longer
leg with two route choices near the end.
Go straight or take a round route that
uses a track? Hmm… Straight is great, or
at least it’s shortest! It goes well and you
find control 4 in the re-entrant.
1
4
2
4. What was the total course length for all
the competitors who completed their courses
at O-Ringen Smålandskusten 2024?
1) 55 763 km
X) 42 980 km
2) 50 013 km
2. What is the highest number
of competitors ever at an O-Ringen?
1) 23 965
X) 25 021
2) 25 432
Did you find that control okay? It’s great to be
accurate on the first two, it gives you so much
confidence! For control 3, look for the felled area
and follow the edge towards the green. Typical, just
when you’ve got into a good rhythm, your bearing
is a bit off and you come to a boulder. With some
quick relocation, you find the knoll where control 3
is, just to the north.
Another longer leg to a small
depression in some dense forest.
You’ll have to take care not to make
a mistake in the green forest. You
use a large boulder as an attack
point and soon see control 5.
5
6
5. Where does the name
“O-Ringen” actually come from?
1) Swedish Orienteering Federation study circle
X) Swedish national team runners’ “trade union”
2) Rings given out as prizes in the first years the
competition was held
So far, so good! The next leg is also quite long.
You contour round a larger hill but realise the last
part of the leg might be difficult. You search for a
collecting feature. There. An open hilltop. You turn
a bit and head down into control 6, a re-entrant.
8. Which Swedish region has
hosted the most O-Ringen events?
1) Småland
X) Dalarna
2) Skåne
A fast, simple leg to a path junction
for the last control. You’re running
well and ready for a final sprint, but
first – control 9!
9
9. Where is O-Ringen 2025?
1) Stockholm
X) Göteborg
2) Jönköping
Brilliant, well done!
Just one final sprint left!
Finish. What’s your favourite O-Ringen memory?
So, now you just have to download your answers,
either by emailing them to marknad@oringen.se
or via O-Ringen’s social media channels. Look out
for posts on O-Ringen’s Facebook and Instagram
ORIENTEERING STAGE 1 LONG DISTANCE
Monday 21st July 2025
ORIENTEERING STAGE 2 MIDDLE DISTANCE
Tuesday 22nd July 2025
» Interview with course setter MATTI ENVALL
What’s unique about stage 2?
– The varied terrain, everything from mature pine and spruce
forest to denser areas. The terrain will also be more physically
challenging than many people might expect, says Matti.
What type of orienteering will competitors face?
– Varied and intense orienteering, where you will need to shift
focus between reading the bigger features in more open areas
and looking closer to your line in the denser areas.
What has been the most difficult aspect of course setting?
– Generally, the shortest, easiest courses, and junior courses,
have provided the biggest challenge due to the limited paths
and other handrails available.
What technical aspects should orienteers focus on in particular?
– Most importantly, you have to know where you are when you
go into the denser areas – as well as having control over your
compass and direction.
Why shouldn’t you miss this stage?
– The variety you’ll experience in terms of both the terrain and
the orienteering.
STAGE 1
LONG DISTANCE
STAGE 2
MIDDLE DISTANCE
Generally, the area can be summed up as a patchwork of
different terrain types. It is characterised by two large
marshes, as well as two large, relatively detailed hills,
30–50 m high. From the top, competitors have wide
views over the countryside near Vättern.
The area is otherwise moderately hilly. There are some smaller,
sharp and detailed hills with crags, boulders and knolls, with flatter
and vaguer areas between them. The vegetation varies between
runnable open areas of mature trees and denser areas comprising
younger trees and felling. Underfoot there are varying amounts of
bilberries, heather and bracken.
Stage 1 – Long distance
The longest courses, including elite courses, and the shortest junior
courses will start to the south.
The latter will follow paths and rides round a very steep hill area
on the southern part of the map. The map is mostly open forest,
though in places there are old felled areas with a lot of leafy green
vegetation.
The longer courses will head out to the east for some challenging
route choice legs. Here, competitors can look forward to some
areas of lovely open forest, some denser forest will smaller, detailed
hilltops. A large marsh in the middle of the area will be circumnavigated
by longer courses. The main challenges here are the huge
variation in runnability, owing to vegetation. Visibility varies from
over 100 m to just a few metres. This means there will be a definite
art to both attacking the controls and choosing routes.
The final part of the longest courses uses the steep hill that the
junior courses go round. A tough and worthy finish.
The classes that start to the north, i.e. the medium length
courses, some junior courses, courses for older competitors and
recreational (Motion) courses, will start up on a large hill with pleasant
hillsides. The longer of these courses will then pass through
some of the same terrain as the longer courses starting to the
south. Competitors will encounter both runnable and dense forest,
where the vegetation and detailed contour features will challenge
navigational skills.
The final part of all courses starting from the north will be in
flatter and vaguer terrain, with denser vegetation crossed by some
larger forest roads as you head towards the finish.
Watch our interview with the course setters for
stages 1 and 2 at Odensjö on our Youtube channel
For this stage we’ll have different start areas, which
means that competitors who started at the south end of
the map for stage 1 will start to the north, and vice versa.
Stage 2 – middle distance
Courses starting to the north will have a climb of 30-40 m straight
after the start, up onto an open and detailed hilltop.
Here, the forest mostly comprises mature pine and spruce.
In some places the ground is covered by bilberries, heather and
bracken, making it tougher.
The longest courses will then cross a flatter and denser area with
more limited runnability. You’ll have to maintain your speed while
taking a good bearing before coming up into an area of terrain
with varied visibility, requiring careful orienteering.
At around the halfway point, all courses will cross a vague hillside
where both runnability and visibility are limited. You’ll need
to pay attention to the orienteering to avoid mistakes.
The shorter junior courses will mostly use a separate area which
is flat and vague, but has a number of large tracks and roads.
All courses will finish by passing through the same area as the
shorter junior courses, i.e. a flatter and vaguer area with denser
vegetation. The area is crossed by some larger forest roads before
you come into the fields where the Odensjö arena and finish line
await. Variety and changes in terrain types can also be expected
for runners starting to the south. Flatter, more detailed areas are
mixed with steeper hillsides where you have to take care with your
orienteering. Competitors will cross some denser areas of young
trees, requiring careful use of the compass. High bilberries and
heather mean you’ll get your heart rate up even in flatter terrain.
Many of the classes will pass through a runnable, detailed area
where you’ll really need to watch your speed to make sure you
orienteer correctly.
All courses will finish by going across a detailed hilltop, where
you’ll have to keep orienteering accurately after the 35–50m climb.
To finish, all courses go along a path and out into the field at
Odensjö for the last control.
To sum up, competitors on both
stage 1 and stage 2 will experience
a lot of variety, both in terms
of terrain, experience and
orienteering challenge.
ORIENTEERING STAGE 3 MIDDLE DISTANCE
Thursday 24th July 2025
STAGE 3
MIDDLE DISTANCE
Hos oss växer du
Våra medarbetare är nyckeln
till att vi kan bygga framtidens
Sverige.
Tillsammans skapar vi smarta och
innovativa lösningar som våra
kunder behöver.
The terrain on this stage is the southern end of a large
hill, which runs from the south to the north and has steep
slopes. Runnability in this area is relatively good and
the varied terrain includes everything an orienteer could
conceivably encounter.
As you know, we are in Småland. Given the commercial forestry
we have here, the terrain includes both felled areas and denser,
young trees.
The area also has a large path network, which competitors on
every course will encounter.
The white areas are often open, mature forest. You can run
quickly here, but remember to pay attention to your orienteering!
The terrain is moderate to steep and competitors will encounter
crags and detailed hilltops.
The longest courses on this middle distance will start by climbing
the hill with slope orienteering, while others will have a gentler start.
When runners approach the finish there will be great views, with
Vättern visible on the horizon.
» Interview with course setter MAGNUS SVENSSON
What’s unique about stage 3?
– The magical Småland forest, says Magnus.
What type of orienteering will competitors face?
– The orienteering here is full of variety, with some very fast
forest but it’s also very hilly.
What has been the most difficult aspect of course setting?
– The hardest thing about this area is that there are so many
paths, so making good courses takes some extra thought.
What technical aspects should orienteers focus on in
particular?
– Adapting your speed to the orienteering – traffic lighting.
Why shouldn’t you miss this stage?
– You’ll experience the wonderful, varied terrain and a run-in
where if you look up, you’ll see Vättern on the horizon, finishes
Magnus.
ORIENTEERING STAGE 4 LONG DISTANCE
Friday 25th July 2025
ORIENTEERING STAGE 5 LONG DISTANCE
Saturday 26th July 2025
Detaljfattig högplatå
med omväxlande
tallskog och gles
granskog
STAGE 4
LONG DISTANCE
STAGE 5
LONG DISTANCE
The longer courses start in a runnable, open and fairly
hilly area, before heading down to some more varied
and tougher coniferous and mixed forest in the south.
Competitors’ skills will be tested, and route choice
decisions and the ability to adapt your speed will prove
decisive for your result. On this stage you’ll experience
all phases of commercial forestry. Runnability varies
between quick grasses underfoot, heather and high
bilberries to new and older thinning and felled areas. The
contours vary from being very detailed to vaguer.
Stage 4 – long distance
On the way up to the arena, longer courses use an undulating
area of low hills, with fast running over grassy undergrowth and
relatively vague coniferous forest. Good bearings and distance
judgement are important for success in this area. The shorter, more
technical courses also use mainly this area. In the northern part
just before the arena, there are more paths, which wind round
many small hills through open coniferous forest. This will be used
by courses for younger juniors. Lastly, we can guarantee some
wonderful nature for anyone who finds the time to take in the
atmosphere of this beautiful forest south of Månsarp.
The final stage of O-Ringen 2025 will take place in
varied and beautiful terrain to the west and north
of the arena at Månsarp.
Stage 5 – long distance
The longest courses will encounter an area of spruce with a lot of
intricate contour detail to the north. Courses will also pass Taberg
(343 m above sea level), which rises steeply and suddenly from the
land around it. Taberg is a nature reserve where forestry work is
limited. The hill will offer a challenge for elite competitors, with
both tricky vegetation and steep ground.
Later on in the courses, the terrain shifts character and competitors
will visit a vaguer plateau with a variety of pines and sparse
spruce forest. The marshes and hilltops here almost feel like being
in Norrland.
Competitors on shorter competition classes and on short classes
use a completely different area, which has at least as much detail
as the terrain for longer courses. Here, steep hillsides and varying
runnability create some good route choice challenges.
Junior courses and the final part of other courses will make use
of the rolling pine forest near the finish. In places it is very runnable,
with lots of paths. It’s tempting to up the pace here but you have
to remember to pay attention, as closer to the arena visibility is more
limited and there are some tricky legs right up until the end.
From the map it might look like most of the terrain is fast. While
that is true some of the time, it’s not
always the case. Bilberries reduce
speed in the pine forest
and runnability is varied
in the areas of detailed
spruce.
In summary, this
stage offers a combination
of more difficult
orienteering and faster
sections. There are
many opportunities to
enjoy the nature, if you
have the time!
YOUTH COUNCIL
On behalf of SOFT, we have now started up
a youth council, to give young orienteers
more chances to share their ideas with the
orienteering world. In our first meeting
we got help from Youth2030, giving us a
great start and pointing us further in the
right direction. We have since had another
meeting, where we discussed how we want
the council to look and how to progress
from here. Now we need your help with
spreading the word abut our new youth
council! Can you see yourself as part of the
council, or know someone who wants to join
us and shape the future? Then get in touch
by emailing ung@orientering.se You’re
also welcome to get in touch
with suggestions for changes
you want to see in Swedish
orienteering, or any new ideas
you would like to become reality.
Arvid Nord knows how to tackle
the demanding Jönköping terrain
Last Autumn, the Swedish
orienteering team held their inaugural
training camp just outside Jönköping.
The reason – here you’ll find varied
and tough terrain that challenges
orienteers both physically and
technically. In other words, the
perfect setting for both training and
competition at the highest level. You’ll
find map extracts with route choices
from this training in this article.
One person who really knows this terrain
well, and who knows the local elite runners,
is Arvid Nord, who grew up in SOL
Tranås. Since 2014 he has been part of IKHP
Huskvarna’s elite group.
Arvid doesn’t only have a good insight
into the terrain around Jönköping from
his and his club’s efforts. He also joined the
Swedish team’s autumn camp and measured
up the international runners by joining their
open training sessions. Next year he’ll be
playing host to elite competitors from all
over the world, when he’ll be responsible for
elite competitors at O-Ringen.
Arvid is also one of the people you’ll be
able to watch on O-Ringen’s Youtube channel
over the autumn/winter, as he has been
test-running and commenting on legs from
next year’s O-Ringen terrain. So it was an
easy choice when
we needed someone with local knowledge
who could speak about the terrain,
techniques and route choices awaiting
competitors at O-Ringen Jönköping 2025.
What can competitors expect from
Jönköping?
– The terrain for next year’s O-Ringen is
both a real challenge, whilst also being
beautiful and full of variety. Different areas
of forest can vary a lot from each other,
which means that each stage will have its
own character, replies Arvid. He continues
passionately:
– The forests around Jönköping have a
magical feeling and it’s easy to see why they
were the inspiration for John Bauer’s famous
artworks.
Watch films from the Jönköping forests and various O-Ringen stages on O-Ringen’s official Youtube channe.
Photo/video: Anders Blomqvist.
So what is typical Jönköping terrain?
– The word that best describes the terrain
round Jönköping is variety, answers Arvid
straight away. This variety covers everything
from how steep and runnable the forest
is, to how intricate the contour detail is.
Larger, more distinct and more detailed hills
are interspersed with flatter, vaguer areas
between them. The forests are dominated
by mature conifers, with good visibility and
bilberries underfoot, however in places runnability
is limited by felled areas and denser,
young trees, which also create a challenge
by reducing visibility. To succeed here, you
need a really good all-round orienteering
technique, adds Arvid.
Route choices where it’s
important not to get stuck
Even the map samples, pictures and films
that organisers have shown from the terrain
illustrate varied terrain and orienteering. This
forest really lends itself to route choice legs.
What should competitors bear in mind
when planning routes in this terrain?
– My advice is really to think through each
route choice carefully, to avoid the slowest
parts of the terrain with slower forest and
steep hills. Going straight is always an option,
but you can often look further from the
red line and find feasible route choices that
allow faster running and easier orienteering,
explains Arvid.
– I’d also remind you that each individual
route choice leg is one part of a race and a
whole week of competition. Sometimes it’s
no bad thing to invest in a tactical route
choice that saves some energy and plays it
safe. It’s much harder to maintain a good
orienteering technique when you’re tired,”
he adds.
Demanding hillsides and dense forest
As well as route choices, one orienteering
challenge is the detailed hillsides that feature
is several stages. Another factor affecting
orienteering technique is the physically
challenging terrain that many competitors
will encounter.
– On this type of leg, you’ll need to read
the map carefully and keep track of how
Västansjö
high you are on the hillside. The slopes are
often high and steep, which makes it easy
to lose where you are on the hillside. It’s
also easy to make parallel errors with all the
details, says Arvid in assessment.
Are there any other orienteering challenges?
– Another thing that makes the orienteering
more difficult is the areas of denser forest on
some stages. Here, you really need to take
careful bearings and know where you are
when you enter the denser areas, as both
runnability and visibility are limited here.
Very different to Oskarshamn
Many of us O-Ringen participants have the
Småland coast and Oskarshamn fresh in
their memory. Maybe some people think it
will be more of the same, with Småland two
years in a row.
Is that really true?
– The big difference is that the 2025 competitions
will be held on inland terrain,
which means you won’t find any of the small
hills and “bushier” vegetation competitors
encountered in those final three stages
round Oskarshamn. The terrain is more like
the stages held near Målilla, though a little
less rocky. In Jönköping there will also be
open, runnable pine forest, unlike this year,
explains Arvid.
What training should you be doing to be
on top form for O-Ringen 2025?
– First and foremost, it’s good to have
trained a lot in the forest and on hilly
terrain. The forests round Jönköping are
physically tough, with many hills and some
undergrowth, mainly bilberries. To run
quickly, you’ll need to be able to push hard
and fight the whole way, replies Arvid.
– I would also recommend practising to
change your speed and adapt your orienteering
technique. Rough orienteering at
higher speeds, with a focus on your general
direction and the bigger contour features, is
alternated with finer orienteering in areas
with more intricate detail and lower visibility.
It’s about making sure you have a lot
7
2
1
Hjärttorp
6
of tools in your toolbox, as well as knowing
how and when to use them.
Youtube films show
how the terrain looks
To really show us what the terrain is like,
Arvid Nord, along with Tova Olsson, has
been running some example legs from the
terrain used in each of our five stages.
– As well as showing what the forest is
like, we also share some tips on what we
think is the best way to tackle the challenges
you’ll face on each stage, says Arvid.
The films will be released regularly on
O-Ringen’s Youtube channel, and you’ll be
able to see shorter clips via our social media.
Among others, four films will be released
featuring example legs from the terrain –
recommended for anyone who wants to
arrive well prepared next year.
What was it like to record the films?
– To begin with, standing in front of the
camera and talking took some getting used
to, but it felt more natural once we had been
filming a while. It was fun and it made for
good variety to play the role of “presenter”
and follow Tova in some of the films, while
in others I got to be the “expert” and give the
viewers tips and advice, says Arvid.
Start to control 1:
I’d focus on a careful direction when leaving
the start, and look up. I’d try to keep right of
the re-entrants, knolls and crags just to the
left of the line. I’d try to cross the spur near
the hilltop, where the knoll and open area
are. Then you just have to be very careful
with your direction, as visibility is poorer on
the slope. Look out for the large re-entrant
and the crag on the curve, where the hillside
plateaus. On this leg, it’s good to take
some extra climb to ensure a safe approach
to the control. Routes approaching the
control from the right have a more difficult
approach.
Control 1-2, red route:
Head down into the re-entrant and follow
the crag down to the track. Once there,
look up and aim to the right of the craggy
spur. I’d run on my compass until I hit the
Finally, what would you say is the
number one reason to register for
O-Ringen Jönköping 2025?
– As well as the varied and challenging
terrain, I’m convinced that all the extra
details around the event will work smoothly.
Jönköping is a really lovely destination
and the central location of O-Ringen City,
and the good services, will add another
dimension. Imagine being able to conclude a
successful day in the forest with a dip in our
beautiful Vättern, finishes Arvid.
Then I’d run on the path until I reach the
Control 1-2, blue route:
A careful exit direction down into the
with crags on either side. After crossing
the track, I’d read the detail on the long,
narrow hill and look up to try to see the gap
between the two tops on the highest hill.
I’d go through the gap and the re-entrant
Control 5-6, red route:
This is a tricky leg, where you have to
take care not to get stuck in denser
areas or crags. I’d start by going round
the green area by looking for the big,
marshy re-entrant. Then I’d climb the
steep hill, on a careful bearing to make
sure I ran the shortest way possible,
aiming for the small open hill near the
red line. After passing the small hill,
I’d continue along the path until I see
the crag on the right and the knoll
to the left. I’d take a careful bearing
when leaving the path, to be sure
of where I am and to run as short a
distance as possible in the green. I’d
want to approach the control on the
crag by following the hill round to it,
so I’d curve slightly to the left through
the marsh with denser vegetation and
the area with smaller crags and hills.
Before approaching the control I’d
check carefully where I’m entering the
green area and use my compass to
ensure a direct route in.
For this option, I’d start by climbing up
and passing the small craggy edge to the
north of the control. After running above
the larger outcrop, I’d keep running in that
direction towards the control. On the way
down the hill I’d run through the large
re-entrant between the small spurs, finishing
with a crag to the right and a big
open ridge to the left. For the final part of
the leg I’d take a careful bearing and stay
high to take the control. This route has
more climbing than the red option but
you can attack the control from above.
Control 10-11, red route:
On this option you stay lower on the
hillside and use it as a handrail on the
way into the control. I’d be careful with
my exit direction and go through the
craggy re-entrant. Once down the first
slope, I’d follow the ride between the
craggy edge and the long hill. For the
rest of the leg I’d follow my compass carefully,
and the shape of the hill. I’d also
use the spur to the left and the denser
marsh to the right as handrails.
O-Ringen Jönköping 2025 will have five days of Trail-O.
These will be fun competitions for both beginners and
experienced competitors and one of the main aims is
to showcase the huge variety of terrain round Jönköping
and Huskvarna.
There will be a total of three arenas (of which, two are well-equipped
indoor arenas) close to O-Ringen Ciy and with good parking
facilities. The IKHP clubhouse and Bondberget arenas are closest,
at around 5–6 km away, whereas Vaktholmen is around 30 km
from O-Ringen City. The suggested transport method to each
arena is with competitors’ own vehicles – it is possible to cycle to
stages 1, 4 and 5 but there are some very steep hills on the routes.
All stages will use new maps specially made for Trail-O,
based on laser data and older maps. The terrain is very varied
in character, starting with land grazed by cattle. Then there’s
open, stony and detailed pine forest, and finally magical John
Bauer spruce forest, with some areas of mixed forest and hillsides
of majestic oak trees. The course setters have found several
interesting areas, where competitors encounter enjoyable and fair
orienteering. The focus is on being able to interpret the terrain and
map, and then to use the right orienteering technique to solve each
problem.
There will be a Come and Try Trail-O event on the activity day,
where you’ll have the chance to test courses from Trail-O Stage 1.
Terrain description
Stage 1 – Arena IKHP Clubhouse
People meet to take part in many
sports at IKHP’s clubhouse,
perched on an outcrop just
north of Huskvarna. This
nature reserve has plenty
of paths for cyclists and
walkers. Visibility is good,
as the area is grazed by
cattle for much of the
year. Competitors will
encounter mostly mixed
forest, with a lot of deciduous
trees. There are also many juniper
bushes in the terrain. The contours
vary from sharp, rocky edges to gentler slopes.
Stages 2 & 3 – Arena Vaktholmen
We head into upland Småländ and
Vaktholmen, a cluster of farms
on the edge of a fantastic
orienteering area. In this
area, the forest is carefully
managed and visibility is
good. The forest is almost
dominated by pines, with
some deciduous trees
and spruce on sandy and
stony soil. The contours are
intricate to very intricate,
and the many large boulders
will add to the challenge.
Stage 4 – Arena Bondberget
In the old grazing meadows on Bondberget’s northern slopes,
human history has left a clear mark on nature. You can still make
out the old ditches, field terraces and the
odd pollarded tree. Visibility is now
very good, partly because the
area is grazed by cattle for
much of the year but above
all because the trees are
mainly majestic oaks. The
contour shapes are very
vague and there is plenty
of lower, bushier vegetation
in the form of hazel
and other deciduous trees.
Stage 5 – Arena Bondberget
On top of Bondberget you’ll find
Öxnegården exercise track,
which is in use all year
round. The terrain here
varies in many ways,
making for challenging
orienteering. Perhaps the
most noticeable feature
is the classic magical John
Bauer spruce forest on
hard, moss-covered ground.
The spruce areas alternate with
mixed forest, with both older
pine trees and younger deciduous
trees. The area is quite steep, a mix of vague areas and very detailed
areas with boulders and crags.
Activity day (23rd July)
Come and Try Trail-O will be available, using the same arena as
Stage 1 (IKHP clubhouse) and the same courses.
Travel to each stage
• Stage 1: Own vehicles for all competitors – possible to cycle but
there is a very steep hill. Around 6 km from O-Ringen City.
Parking 0–150 m from the arena.
• Stages 2 and 3: Own vehicles for all competitors. Around 29 km
from O-Ringen City. Parking 50–150 m from the arena.
• Stages 4 and 5: Own vehicles competitors – possible to cycle
but there is a very steep hill. Around 5 km from O-Ringen City.
Parking 100–150 m from the arena.
There will generally be a lot of variety between the MTBO areas. From areas with
somewhat fewer roads and paths to existing MTB arenas where the trails snake
around each other. The size of the hills will also vary, so make sure to look carefully
Stage 1
In the terrain round Odensjö and Barnarp,
using the same arena as the Foot-O, the first
MTBO stage will be a middle distance. The
E4 motorway divides the area – and two
contrasting terrain types. The eastern side is
very steep, with a dense path network and
some urban areas. In contrast, the western
side is less steep and is an old outdoor
recreation area. The combination of both
these sides really lends itself to an intense
middle distance, testing both physical and
technical skills.
Stage 3
For this middle distance we’re moving to
the other side of the city, to the clubhouse of
another well-known club, namely IF Hallby
SOK. This is a perfect place for outdoor
activities all year round, with many trails
for skiing, running and cycling. Over recent
years many new MTB tracks have been built
in the arena, and the week after this stage is
held, the European Youth MTB Championships
will be held here. To start their race,
competitors will ride through flat pine forest.
The second half, however, will be steep,
with ski tracks many MTB trails.
Stage 5
The final stage will feature and exciting
chasing start and the only long distance race
of the week. It will use the same arena as
the previous stage but different competition
terrain that’s more suitable for long distance.
Competitors will face route choice challenges
in a relatively flat area.
best views of O-Ringen week. Many sporting
events have been held at this arena, most
recently the European Youth MTB Championships
in 2024. There are many paths of
every technical level and there may well be
some tough climbs. For this forest sprint
you’ll have to keep a cool head all the way
round – this will be something special!
Stage 4
Some way to the south of O-Ringen City,
at the Månsarp arena, our fourth stage will
take place in the form of a long middle
distance. Competitors will encounter a mix
of outdoor recreation areas, riding trails and
roads. Tempo changes will be a key theme
with such varied surfaces, with everything
from quick roads to sandy paths.
Para-I – Here to Stay
2024 was the second year where the Para-I class, the
class for people with intellectual disabilities, was offered
at O-Ringen. At its debut last year, seven competitors took
part in all five stages or tried a stage start. This year, 16
people participated – just over double the numbers.
Competitors travelled from as fasr as Luleå in the north and Karlskrona
in the south, and we also had three Norwegian competitors.
One of them, Simen Økern Hågård from Konnerud IL, ran well all
week and took home the victory ahead of Henrik Berglund, OK
Storsjön and Jakob Brundin, IFK Mora. The best female competitor
was Eva Dahlberg, OK Storsjön, in fourth place, ahead of Silje
Strand from Lierbygda O-Lag.
The Para-I class uses the Inskolning (“Induction”) course, which
means competitors have feedback from the happy and sad faces
alongside the paths. They can even take an assistant for more
reassurance if they would like to. Some do and others don’t. The
map is simplified by removing details such as form lines, knolls
and, on Stage 2, boulders! (see map extract)
Map extract original
There was a Para-I meeting place at each arena. From left, Tina Eveborn (local
O-Ringen volunteer), Eva Dahlberg and Henrik Berglund from OK Storsjön, and
sitting down, Viggo Nordberg from Trosabygdens OK
There are also fewer graphics and design elements on the map, to
minimise the amount of distracting detail. After successfully completing
their course, competitors could come to the Para-I tent to
collect their prize and have fika, which was much appreciated.
We hope that even more people will take the chance to get more
of their family and clubmates out into the forest at O-Ringen
Jönköping 2025. The Para-I class is here to stay!
More Para-I
If you would like to try Para-I, you don’t
have to wait until next summer. There
will be a Para-I class at Dala-Dubbeln
in Falun on 19th-20th October and at
Lången & Korten in Karlstad on 2nd-3rd
November, the organisers are offering
an open Para class for all disabilities.
Silje Strand from Lierbygda O-Lag shows her map to Lone Brochman from NOF
(Norwegian Orienteering Federation), who works with Parasports and was at
What would it be like if a “completely average family” with their suburban
house, Volvo and dog, living in an average size city in Sweden, suddenly started
orienteering together? That’s a question the Agerhall family from Jönköping can
answer. Until a few years ago they were blissfully unaware of what assembly
areas, SI cards, description holders, call-up times or orienteering were. But this
is now part of everyday life for them, and after next summer they will be able to
call themselves both O-Ringen competitors and organisers.
The Agerhall family – mum Anna, dad
Jonas and kids Tage (14) and Majken
(11), live in Taberg, just outside
Jönköping. Here, they seem to live a completely
conventional Swedish life, with work,
studies and day-to-day logistics to manage.
For the Agerhalls, leisure time has always
been filled by lots of different sports – such
as running, skiing, golf and football. When
Majken wanted to try out orienteering it was
nothing unusual. What they didn’t bargain
for was that the whole family would get
involved in training and competing.
–Some of my friends and I had heard
about orienteering training at school. We
tried it and I was hooked, says Majken, who
has now orienteered for four years. It didn’t
take long before big brother Tage, who also
had positive memories from school orienteering
as well as friends in the orienteering
club, was joining in.
Once both children were being ferried
about to orienteering training, it made sense
for the parents to give it a go too, and it was
only a year before the whole family could
call themselves orienteers and members of
Jönköpings OK, where they already knew
quite a few other members.
What tips do you have for anyone who
would like to try orienteering?
–You can try it out first to see if you think it’s
fun. If you enjoy it, you can go to a competition,
says Majken.
– There are often Hittaut courses and similar
things nearby to try, or you can go to a
training session with a local club. If you’re at
school, orienteering there is a good first step
It was like being
in a wonderful
bubble all week
Anna Agerhall on the family’s first O-Ringen week.
(like it was for me), even if it’s not exactly
like proper orienteering, adds Tage.
– Check if there’s a club nearby with training
you can join, or a beginners’ course. Be
brave and give it a go! You’re never too old
to orienteer and it’s a sport that makes you
feel good, both physically and mentally, says
mum Anna.
– Our club was great at making things easy
for beginners. We could borrow SI cards and
compasses, and get help with getting started.
Check with your local club, they’re always
happy to welcome newbies into the orienteering
family, suggests dad Jonas.
What’s the best thing about orienteering?
– The social side! Not just with your
clubmates but also people from other clubs
who are actually your competition, say the
O-RINGEN MAGAZINE NR 2 • 2024 47

whole family together, before adding to their
answers. Everyone who’s been orienteering
can confirm that the adrenaline kick you get
when you find a control is priceless. As is the
feeling when you finish; whether it’s gone
well or badly, it’s just so much fun you want
to do it all again. You learn something new
every time.
–Another thing, I never used to dare to
run in the forest alone, even though I like
running, but orienteering has helped me
take that step. I’m really happy about that,
says Anna.
What has been the most difficult
thing about starting orienteering?
– Learning “orienteering language” – there
are so many new words that everyone who’s
been orienteering for years just knows.
For example, Jonas thought TC (“assembly
area”) meant torrklosett (“earth closet”) at
his first race.
And then there’s all the unwritten rules.
The family’s advice is to dare to ask, and
learn from others in the club. When competing,
the trick is to dare to stop and read
the map.
Is there anything about orienteering
that you’ve found surprising?
– That it’s so sociable even though it’s an
individual sport. Both within our club and
the sport more generally, you can really feel
the camaraderie. It’s a very inclusive environment
and you feel very welcome from
the start. It’s also great to have such a range
of ages!
– It’s also great to be able to start a new sport
as an adult, where you can both compete
and improve at the sport. Orienteering feels
unique in the way it’s both a mental and
physical challenge, add Anna and Jonas.
O-Ringen – a new chapter for the family
Things have progressed quickly since
Majken dragged the Agerhall family into
orienteering. The whole family now call
themselves orienteers and have been to
several competitions in southern Sverige.
Majken and Tage are good at both training
and competing, mum Anna is involved as
a junior coach in Jönköpings OK and dad
Jonas has for the first time experienced the
feeling of completing a race without any
real mistakes. So when the question came
of whether they wanted to join some of the
family’s best friends for the world’s biggest
orienteering adventure – O-Ringen – it
wasn’t difficult for them to say yes.
What do you do if you’ve
never been to O-Ringen before?
– We don’t have a campervan or caravan but
our friends who have a house on the east
coast asked if we wanted to join them and
stay there – and that was that. Then there
were a lot of questions for us... Will we get
stuck in traffic? How long will it take to get
from the parking to the arena? How does
everything work at such a big competition?
How do you work out the logistics of everyone’s
start time and distance to the start?
There were also two families and two dogs to
think about now, too. Even though we didn’t
know what to expect it all worked out fine
and O-Ringen Smålandskusten was a wonderfully
positive experience for everyone.
What’s the best thing about O-Ringen?
– Staying with your friends and having a
few days of orienteering in a row. If you ran
a bad leg, you could make up for it the day
after – you got another chance, they sum up
together.
– It was good fun and interesting to see how
Agerhall family in the arena at O-Ringen Smålandskusten 2024.
everything works at such a big competition.
It was quite different to the events we’ve
been to before. Even if we hadn’t been to
such a big competition before, everything
felt natural and not at all difficult, explains
Majken.
What was your experience of
O-Ringen Smålandskusten 2024?
– Well organised, crowded and huge but
still somehow familiar. You can also feel
the tension on this kind of multi-day event.
Every day when you jogged to the start it felt
important, says Jonas.
– It was like being in a wonderful bubble
all week. Even though it was so big, with so
many people, you feel just as at home as at a
normal local race, adds Anna.
What’s your top advice
for first timers at O-Ringen?
– Just because it’s a big race it doesn’t mean
Caption: Majken on the way into the finish. Photo: Sofia Beijer, NOOR studiostudio.
you need to be really good. At an orienteering
event, we’re all equal, no matter what
job we have during the week. Everyone is so
helpful, both volunteers and fellow competitors.
Just go and try it!, say the entire family.
As well as five days of orienteering,
O-Ringen week was a positive overall
experience, with sun, bathing, fishing and
socialising.
Do you have a favourite memory
from the Småland Coast?
– When we met Karolin Ohlsson on the first
day. I’ve seen her on TV and it was cool to
meet her in real life, says a smiling Majken.
Looking forward to Jönköping
Now that O-Ringen is coming to the family’s
hometown of Jönköping, they won’t just
have made their debut as O-Ringen competitors.
Soon they’ll even be able to call
themselves O-Ringen organisers.
What’s your advice to everyone heading to
Jönköping next summer?
– Don’t be afraid of all the charcoal burning
platforms, answer Tage and Jonas in unison.
– Enjoy the nature. The stages will be held
in magical terrain – I think so, anyway. And
don’t forget to explore Jönköping and the
surrounding area, adds Anna.
– Even if one day goes badly, don’t give up.
Everyone has a bad day. It will be fine across
the whole week. Don’t give up! Check your
map and control codes carefully as there are
many controls, a lot of people in the forest
and a lot of elephant tracks, advises Majken.
Finally – what shouldn’t we miss as visitors
to the Jönköping area?
– Tabergstoppen! chorus the family at
once.
– You can play crazy golf, and eat ice
cream and other good food.
– Venture out of the campsite and explore
Agerhall family together with their club- and housemates
the Dahlström-Olsson family.
the city, with its restaurants and nearby
bathing places along Vätterstranden. Get
out into the surrounding countryside, too,
with charming excursions like Äppledalen at
Kaxholmen, Gränna and Visingsö.
The terrain for Gothenburg 2026
When it comes to terrain, we’ll be offering a wonderful
mixture of everything Gothenburg is famous for! The week
will begin with two long distance competitions, which
will be held mostly within in the Vättlefjäll nature reserve.
Vättlefjäll is a wilderness area with few paths but many
small lakes, tough marshes, runnable re-entrants and
open hilltops.
Fantastic orienteering terrain where both good orienteering technique
and strong running will be rewarded.
After the activity day, we’ll head to Slottsskogen in central
Gothenburg. Don’t be fooled into thinking this will be a short
middle distance in a park – detailed hilltops and steep hills await
between paths and animal enclosures.
Finally, we’ll head to Hisingen and Svarte Mosse (or Sjumilaskogen
as it’s sometimes known), in terrain that is perhaps less physical
than the beginning of the week. There will be fewer contours
but more technical orienteering, where intricate detail and open
hilltops await between denser vegetation on the slopes and valley
bottoms. A good network of paths and stone walls also covers the
area, with the walls illustrating its history – one of them marked
the old border between Norway and Sweden up until 1658.
Gothenburg – a little big city
After two years in Småland, O-Ringen is heading to
the west coast and to Gothenburg. O-Ringen was last
held here in 2004 and more recently, clubs here have
organised the Junior World Championships and World
Masters, the Swedish Championships, Tiomila and the
Swedish Sprint Championships, and other competitions.
We’ve interviewed Karin Kullman, Project Manager for
O-Ringen Gothenburg 2026.
Gothenburg is a bigger city than other recent O-Ringen
locations – how has it been to plan an O-Ringen City here?
– O-Ringen City will be in Säve, out on Hisingen. It’s surrounded
by countryside, even though it’s only 10 km from Gothenburg
Central Station. The campsite itself will mostly be on Stora Holm
motor risk education site, which means there is plenty of tarmac to
use to enter and exit the site. But anyone who wants to try out the
skidpan will have to wait until O-Ringen has finished…
What do you think about the terrain?
– I think it’s great, with a combination of running strength and
plenty of fun technical challenges on detailed hilltops. It might
also be a good idea to hone your skills for running over tussocky
marshes on the first stages…
What do you think competitors will especially enjoy?
– I think the combination of tranquillity at the campsite and the
bustle of the city for anyone who wants that. And then there’s the
saltwater bathing.
– There will also be accommodation to suit everyone. As well
as the campsite, accommodation will also be available at schools,
orienteering clubhouses, hotels and private holiday lets.
How are things going generally?
– The maps are now being made and we are finalising the course
setting team.
– We’ll mostly be using common land, with many land agreements
to sign, and that’s where we’re working hard at the moment.
In a big city such as Gothenburg things are constantly changing,
and it’s important to know now what’s going to happen in future,
to avoid nasty surprises. The management group are working hard
and both engagement and involvement are growing across the
whole area.
– We’re ready to lay the foundations for 2026!
Welcome to Gothenburg in summer 2026
Try world class beers from some
of Gothenburg’s artisan breweries
Have you heard of Stigbergets, Poppels or Dugges? According to
international rankings, some of the world’s best beers just now
come from Gothenburg. Ever since Gothenburg was founded in
1621 there have been breweries here, and during the East India
Company era of the 18th century, beer was exported all over the
world. At the start of the 21st century, a new era began in Gothenburg’s
beer story with the founding of Dugges brewery. Since
then there has been a renaissance for small-scale and local artisan
breweries in Gothenburg. Most of these breweries have their own
taproom, where you can try the beers direct from the tap.
Gothenburg is a fantastic summertime city. There’s
always a lot to do here – especially in the summer. We’ve
picked out a few unmissable highlights that you really
wouldn’t want to miss, for example visiting idyllic islands
on the archipelago, fishing for shellfish, saltwater bathing
and the bustling city life.
Experience Gothenburg’s unique archipelago
The Gothenburg archipelago is a fantastic place that you can
discover time and time again. Stroll along picturesque streets and
gorgeous beaches, in nature reserves and along the lovely promenade
paths. On the islands in the north of the archipelago you’ll
find a wide selection of restaurants, accommodation and activities.
These larger islands have all the services you need, with small
island villages perfect for a cosy weekend away. You can get to the
ten inhabited islands in the north of the Gothenburg archipelago
by car, bus or bike along road 155 towards Hisingen/Öckerö, to
Lilla Varholmen ferry terminal. During some periods you can also
take the Kungsö ferry from Stenpiren to Hönö Klåva. The southern
islands in the archipelago are car free, and have everything from
sleepy villages to completely uninhabited islands. You can access
the islands all year round with Styrsöbolaget ferries, either from
Saltholmens ferry terminal or Stenpiren in the city.
Awaken your inner child at Liseberg
With its many rides and attractions, hundreds of thousands
of flowers, huggable bunnies, food, drink and entertainment,
Liseberg has something for everyone. Make sure you’ve left plenty
of time for this one, because there’s a lot to do. How about Helix,
Scandinavia’s longest and fastest
rollercoaster, or Mechanica,
which spins 360 degrees – 30
metres up in the air? You’ll also
find Europe’s highest freefall
ride, AtmosFear, and Balder,
which was named by experts
as the world’s best wooden
rollercoaster. The Liseberg
bunnies live in Kaninland and
give out hugs to children of
all ages between goes on the
children’s rides, like Flygis,
Cyklonen or the classic teacups.
Cool down with a lovely dip
Do you prefer sunlit rocks, a family-friendly sandy beach or a
spectacular pool right out in the river? In Gothenburg there’s a
swimming spot for everyone. On Hisingen you can, for example,
cool down at Hamnbadet in Jubileumsparken, near the city. Here
there are three pools where you can swim, bathe, jump and dive
– and great places to hang out and sunbathe. Two of the pools are
filled with saltwater from our saline source in the Göta river and the
third with freshwater, which is filtered naturally. If you would rather
have a proper sea swim, there are many great swimming spots, for
example Smithska Udden, Fiskebäcksbadet or Sillviksbadet.
Wander between cafés and small shops in charming Haga
Haga is one of Gothenburg’s oldest districts and the name come
from the hagar (meadows) that were here in the 17th century.
These days, Haga’s pedestrianised streets and lined with small cafés
and shops, all housed in typical Gothenburg landshövdingehus
buildings. Haga is within easy walking distance of the city centre
but if you travel here by tram you can disembark at either Hagakyrkan
or Järntorget. The main street is called Haga Nygata and
runs from Vasastan at one end to Linné at the other.
Enjoy fresh seafood in iconic Feskekörka
Since 1874, Feskekörka has been a destination for both people
who love fish and seafood and for those who want to experience
one of Gothenburg’s most iconic buildings. This fish market got
its name from its architectural style, with pointed arch windows
and design without partition walls or pillars – simply put, it looks
like a church, or in Gothenburg dialect, kôrka. After some years
of renovation, Feskekörka has finally re-opened. Now you walk
into a market hall full of delicacies from the sea, many different
fish dishes and some new restaurants and bars with both Swedish
and international guest chefs. You’ll also find one of Gothenburg’s
biggest outdoor eating areas, Vallgraven, here.
Discover Gothenburg and its surroundings on two wheels
Gothenburg is a great cycling destination. The forest and terrain
is made for mountain biking and surrounding the city and along
the coast, wonderful country roads stretch out in the beautiful
landscape. At Gothenburg Visitor Centre, which you’ll find at
Kungsportsplatsen 2, you’re welcome to collect a cycling map of
Gothenburg. The map has all the city’s cycle routes and bike pump
stations marked. It also features practical information and suggests
some cycle tours. Gothenburg has several bike hire options.
Experience Gothenburg from above
With its 246 metre height and 74 floors, Karlatornet is the tallest
building and residence in the Nordic region, located in the middle
of the fast-growing neighbourhood of Karlastaden, on Hisingen.
The whole of floor 69 is open to the public. Here, 220 metres up,
visitors can have a whole new Gothenburg experience, with breathtaking
views for miles around.
If you would like to find out more about any of these suggestions,
we can warmly recommend visiting goteborg.com.
Welcome to Gothenburg!
See you in Stockholm in 2027!
For the first time since 1975, O-Ringen is returning to
Stockholm during week 30 of 2027. This means there
won’t only be classic orienteering adventures but, in
partnership with the City of Stockholm, we’ll be offering
an urban, sustainable and accessible O-Ringen.
How will it all work? Well, the idea is to use what’s already
there. Stockholm is a major international city with nature
right on the doorstep. As well as world class orienteering
there is a whole range of attractions and experiences that
you’ll have plenty of time to explore between the control-finding.
Another big advantage is that Stockholm is easy to get to, not just
from the rest of Sweden but from all over the world.
Another ambition is that each stage should be accessible using
the public rail network, both for simplicity for competitors but
also from a sustainability perspective. So, where will the heart of
O-Ringen, O-Ringen City, be based? The idea is to build it around
the university area at Frescati. This is an area of Norra Djurgården
in Stockholm where most of Stockholm University and the
Natural History Museum of Sweden are located. The area is part
of the Royal National City Park. The plan is to have a campsite and
O-Ringen Square. As well as the campsite Stockholm has many
accommodation options, with something to suit all requirements
and budgets.
What about the arenas? We’re working to decide on those at the
moment. We’ve got the terrain, but which areas will we choose?
You’ll see when we see you in Stockholm 2027!
Vi söker en projektledare till O-Ringen Stockholm 2027
Svensk Orientering Events AB arrangerar årligen
arrangemanget O-Ringen, världens största
orienteringsäventyr. Evenemanget genomförs mitt i
Svensk Orientering Events AB:s styrgrupp.
arbete i ideella sammanhang.
avslutas 1 oktober 2027.
Ansökan
Du lämnar din ansökan med personligt brev och CV till Susanne
Maarup, susanne.maarup@orientering.se. Sista ansökningsdag
är 10 november 2024.
Difficult
LEVELS OF DIFFICULTY FOR ORIENTEERING
WHAT LEVEL SHOULD I CHOOSE?
Description
The course is in terrain with clear and connected features such as roads, larger paths, buildings and open land. The controls on
a green course must always be placed on handrails and must provide reassurance that the competitor is following the correct
route. Control features may be path bends, path junctions, telegraph posts, buildings or other clear features or objects.
The terrain is the same as for green courses, i.e. clear and connected features, e.g. roads, larger paths, open land and buildings.
The controls on a white course must mark only the end of one leg and the start of the next. The control features must therefore
be easily identified and distinct. As well as green course features, controls on white courses may also be on e.g. boulders, crags,
fences and similar features.
Yellow courses can be in more difficult terrain but runnability and visibility must still be good. The terrain must have a connected
network of roads, paths, fences, waterways, open areas etc. Control points may be on more difficult features, for example on the
top of a very distinct hill, but must always have a clear attack point. There must be a clear catching feature behind controls.
Orange and red courses must use runnable terrain, with gentler hills and forest, preferably with areas of cultivated land. Terrain
details must be clear. Compared to green, white and yellow courses, more difficult control features may be used, for example
larger re-entrants, distinct ridges, hills and crags. There must be a clear feature a maximum of 200 m before the control and a
clear catching feature behind it.
Same as for orange courses but you can encounter all types of terrain.
All types of terrain may be used. Very physically tough terrain should be avoided. All types of control feature may be used.
Compared to orange and red courses, purple courses place higher demands on, planning skills, choosing quick routes ahead of
safe routes and finding controls without clear catching features behind them.
On blue and black courses, the difficulty should always suit skilled orienteers, even if anyone can compete. The increased difficulty
level compared to other courses is because more of the orienteering uses contour features, detailed terrain and smaller features.
Same as for blue courses but you can encounter all types of terrain.
MAP SCALES MTBO
MTBO map scales have not been decided yet. Information will be
updated at oringen.se as soon as they have been decided.
FULL BODY COVER
When you compete, you must wear full body cover to
protect you from cuts. This is also recommended when
training. Full body cover means you must cover the skin
on your legs and torso. Long trousers and a t-shirt or vest
are fine. You can repair any holes with tape but must do
this before passing the check station. There is no tape at
starts or with officials.
REGISTRATION GUIDE O-RINGEN JÖNKÖPING 2025
5-DAGARS
O-Ringen’s biggest and most classic competition
will, as usual, be held over five days. The overall winner
will be crowned after a dramatic chasing start
for most main classes. Available in all three disciplines:
Foot orienteering, MTBO and Trail-O.
MAIN CLASSES
Our 5-day main classes are our most popular. Main classes have
allocated start times, apart from DH75 and older, who have a free
minute start on stages 1-4. For younger competitors, the Inskolning
course provides an introduction to orienteering. Inskolning has free
start times and a prize for everyone and the results lists show only that
you have taken part, with no times or placings. The final stage has a
chasing start for all classes apart from Inskolning and DH10–DH12.
The Para-I class is available on all five days, and as a chasing
start. It is open to anyone with an IQ of under 75, the equivalent
to attending a special school or having LSS support in Sweden.
You do not need a Parapsports licence to compete. The Para-I
course is very easy and is around 2 km. All five stages are foot
MTBO CLASSES
There will be five MTBO stages at Jönköping 2025. Start times
will be allocated and the competition finishes with a chasing
start on the final stage for all classes apart from DH10–DH12,
who will have an allocated start time.
MTBO is high-speed and is all about making quick route
choice decisions. The map is similar to maps used in foot
orienteering. The biggest difference is how paths and roads are
marked. They show how easy they are to ride on. Put simply, the
longer the dashes are on the lines, the easier they are to ride.
TRAIL-O CLASSES
In the Trail-O competition map knowledge is in focus. Each
control has up to five alternate control markers. You must
remotely determine which control marker is correctly placed
according to the control ring on the map and the control
description. You compete in a class determined by its difficulty
level, rather than age and gender. The competition takes place
in easily passable terrain.
STAGE START
Photo: Peter Holgersson.
Photo: Peter Holgersson.
You can take part on all stages or just some, and have
the freedom to choose a course on the day, depending on
how you feel. There are courses with various lengths and
difficulty levels. Stage starts are available for all disciplines:
Foot orienteering, MTBO and Trail-O.
For our youngest orienteers there are the Inskolning and Try it out
classes. You can also register for Inskolning over five days (under
“Main classes”). Both have free starts, so you can start when you
want. If you’re an adult who’s a beginner, you can also start with
a Try it out class and then gradually move onto trickier and/or
longer courses.
MTBO classes give both an orienteering technical difficulty level
and a cycling difficulty level. Class/Course is for the orienteering
difficulty and Cycling level is for the cycling difficulty.
If you want some extra help, visit the Bagheera Orienteering
School at our main arenas. They’re happy to help and it’s
completely free.
OPEN CLASSES, 3-DAYS
If you can only join the orienteering festival for the final
three days, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, there are
several open classes for foot orienteering..
You can choose a length and difficulty level to suit you.
