We spoke to Salim Kütük, the Headquarters and Procurement Manager of Malkan Makine, a company that has been contributing to the Turkish textile and ready to wear garment sector with the industrial type ironing machines it produces for 47 years, about the progress the company has made and the state of the sector. Could you tell us briefly about your company? (how many employees, your capacity and your customer portfolio) ‘’Malkan Makine was established in 1971, in Karaköy as a tiny workshop with 1 owner (Mustafa AL- KAN) and an apprentice. Our company produced the first industrial type manual ironing machines in Turkey. This manual iron that we produced in 1971 is now on display at the Istanbul Rami Koç museum. In the beginning manual irons and universal steam iron presses were only produced for dry cleaning companies. Later, especially in the 80s, different products started to be developed for the garment and tourism sectors. Today, with over 30,000

We create something from nothing. We have to combine hundreds of materials and make sure they work right together by doing research. Constant improvement-renewal is required. This means experience and qualified personnel. Right now 70% or more of our staff has been with us for at least 15 years. There are some colleagues that have been with us 20 years, 30 years and have even retired from us. Another problem is the bad quality production done by other companies in our sector who do not value ironing machines as they should and the pricing policies that emerge as a result of this. Also there is not enough support and incentive for machine production. The VAT rate for imported sewing machines is 8% even though they are in the same group as us but for us it is 18%. We are asking that this be reduced to 8% too. Actually there are many problems but let’s leave it at that.” to market the products we have added value to through R&D work in foreign markets. In this context, being more active in the South and Central American markets is at the top of our goals. Also we aim to maintain our market leadership in Central Asia, especially Uzbekistan, and increase our ever growing market share in Poland, Ukraine, Bulgaria and other Balkan countries.” As Malkan how many kinds of machines do you produce and for which sectors? We have a product portfolio with a wide variety of over 700 products including computer controlled special jacket and pants ironing systems, steam-vacuum-blower equipped ironing stations, pneumatic and manual iron presses, knitwear ironing machines, steam inflated ironing robots, steam generators , stain removal machines and vacuum motors. Garment factories, textile factories, laundry facilities, dry cleaners, hotels, hospitals, military officer’s quarters, tailors, leather garment factories, sweater production factories and printing companies that do stone and transfer printing are among the sectors we produce for.” What is Malkan’s after sales approach on service? “Our General Manager Mustafa Alkan always says this, which has become our working principle: “First of all I would like to point out that since the day I established my own business, I always adopted customer satisfaction as my most important principle no matter what the conditions were. I never made promises I couldn’t keep and What would you like to say about the strategies you practice in the market to increase competition? “Currently Malkan Makine is the market leader in Turkey on this subject. With a history, knowledge and experience that goes back 50 years and customer references over 30,000, the company continues to maintain leadership far ahead of the others. Our production plan for 2018 is already full through August. Malkan’s market goals are now more focused on foreign markets. The activities we are concentrating on the most for competition abroad are R&D activities. We must constantly develop our quality and our ability to meet customer needs and improve our products. The customer dimensions are extremely dynamic in this sector, just like they are in any sector. We encounter different and new customer demands all the time. This is why R&D work is extremely important for us. The support we receive from TÜBİTAK, especially in project based R&D, really motivates us. On the other hand, we are concentrating more on international sector fairs and international customer and vendor visits by our marketing team in order
