Sabina Cvilak
The seventh subscription concert comes before
Easter and its programme is prepared to match the
festive mood.
The composer Zvonimir Ciglič, who died this year,
is among the greatest Slovenian composers. His
work is an amalgam of expressionistic ecstasy and
French elegance.
David Finckel
Edward Elgar, the central figure of English music
at the end of the 19 th and the beginning of the
20 th century, composed his concert for violoncello
in E minor after the First World War; he
conceived it as an elegy for the world which had
been lost. This unusual and profound Romantic
work will be performed by the violoncellist
David Finckel, who performs with the renowned
Emerson Quartet.
François Poulenc, a member of the famous group
of French composers »Les six«, wrote Stabat Mater
in 1951 in memory of his friend, the painter
Christian Bernard. This soul-stirring work of art,
in which translucent elegance radiates through
deep sorrow, is one of the most beautiful religious
musical works of the 20 th century. The soprano
Sabina Cvilak will appear as a soloist; she is a
winner of several international competitions and
a permanent member of the Vienna State Opera.
