On 19-23 October 2015 the Faculty of Finance
and Insurance held the third International
Week on ‘New Frontiers in Finance and Accounting’.
This event was organised jointly by
a few Departments – Investments and Real
Estate, Corporate Finance, Banking and Financial
Markets, Public Finance and
Accounting – and supported by the
International Relations Office and the
Dean’s Office of the Faculty.
In last year’s edition the International
Week was conducted by 12 lecturers
from: Belgium, Georgia, Holland, Hungary,
Germany, Scotland, Ukraine and
Poland. The lectures and seminars were
attended by over 270 Polish and foreign
students. The IW received the funding
from the Erasmus+ Programme. The
honorary patronage over the IW was assumed
by the Rector of the University
of Economics in Katowice, the Katowice
Branch Division of the Polish Economic
Society and the Chartered Institute of
Management Accountants. The key partner
in the IW was Węglokoks S.A.
The subjects offered within the IW enjoyed
a lot of interest from students, who
could earn 3 ECTS points. The lectures
and classes addressed a number of issues
related to finance and accounting
– ranging from basic concepts to more
advanced and specialised ones. Dr Katalin
Varga Kiss from István Széchenyi
University (Hungary) conducted classes
on “English for Finance and Accounting”,
which attracted a lot of participants, just
like in the previous years. The invitation
to the IW was also kindly accepted by
Prof. Ingrid Claes from Odisee And Kul
(Belgium), who prepared a seminar on
corporate finance management entitled
“Financial Techniques for Entrepreneurs:
the case of Il caffe di Melezes”. Another
subject offered within the IW dealt with
corporate finance and financial markets.
Prof. Petra Kroflin from DHBW in Ravensburg
(Germany) delivered classes on “International
Aspects of Financial Markets”.
The tax-related issues were discussed at
a seminar on „Taxation in Poland and in
the Netherlands, International and European
Taxation”, conducted by dr Ron van
Zon, from Fontys University in Eindhoven
(the Netherlands) in cooperation with dr
Jolanta Gałuszka from the Department of
Public Finance.
The problems of ethics in finance were
referred to on two courses – Pieter
Thomas Westerhuis from Windesheim
University in Zwolle (the Netherlands)
held a class on “Business Ethics”, while
Andreas Woudenberg from Inholland
University (the Netherlands) delivered
a seminar on “Ethics in Finance (Banking,
Insurance, Investment)”.
Prof. Giorgos Christonakis from the
Berlin School of Economics and Law
(Germany) prepared a seminar on tax
solutions offered in the area of investments
– “Introduction to the system of
Investment Treaty Law”.
Accounting and financial reporting were
the focus of the classes delivered by
the guest lecturers from the Caucasus
University (Georgia). Dr Erekle Pirveli
ran a seminar on the quality of financial
statements and Akaki Kapanadze presented
„Financial Accounting”.
Dr Nondas Pitticas from the University of
the West of Scotland (Scotland) delivered
a seminar entitled “Geography in Business:
location, location, location”, while
Prof. Olga Savchenko from the Kharkiv
Polytechnic Institute (Ukraine) conducted
classes on supporting innovative initiatives
taken by enterprises – “Resource
support the enterprise innovation activity”.
Iryna Shkura from Alfred Nobel Univer-
sity (Ukraine) focused on the economic
feasibility of investment projects –
“Project investment analysis”.
The IW grand opening was attended by
the guests, the representatives of the
University’s and the Faculty’s authorities
as well as a large number of students. It
was accompanied by an education fair
organised by the International Relations
Office. On Wednesday the IW lecturers
took part in an international scientific
conference – “Finance and Accounting
in Creating Information About Financial
Position of Reporting Entities” – held by
the Department of Accounting. The IW
ended with an official ceremony at which
the students received completion certificates
from the lecturers.
Last year’s edition of the IW allowed
students to acquire knowledge and new
skills in the area of finance and accounting,
as well as enhance their social competency
in an international environment.
For the lecturers that was the time when
they could share their experiences, establish
long-term international relationships
and plan future cooperation. The
IW was also an opportunity to present
the culture and history of our region and
to promote our University on the international
arena. Our guests had a chance
to visit the district of Nikiszowiec, the
Silesian Museum, Wieliczka Salt Mine,
Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum,
and enjoy a concert at the NOSPR
Concert Hall. All the activities organised
within the 3rd International Week were
intended to contribute to the promotion
of academic mobility.
