Australian. Wildlife traffickers
are using code words to
sell endangered animals and
their body parts on e-commerce
sites operating in the
country, making it difficult to
monitor such sales.
While an ‘Australian teddy
bear’ may turn out to be a koala,
a marsupial native to Australia,
‘dhaariwala chaddar’
(striped sheet) is the code for tiger
skin, the sale of which is illegal
in India.
The Centre said on Monday
that several websites, including
Amazon, Snapdeal, OLX,
EBay, Alibaba and Quikr, have

The tribunal was hearing
a petition on Monday by lawyer
Vardhaman Kaushik on severe
air pollution in Delhi
and related applications.
The direction was a reiteration
of NGT’s April 7, 2015
order banning diesel vehicles
more than 10 years old from
plying in Delhi and NCR. By
ordering de-registration of
these vehicles, the tribunal
may have found an effective
way to implement that order.
Following the 2015 order,
Delhi police had reported that
attempts were made to impound
old diesel vehicles but the
drive was unsuccessful.

New Delhi: Hundreds of
calls made to the police helpline,
100, go unanswered every
day because these never reach
the police staff due to
heavy call congestion. Admitting
this in the high court on
Monday, Delhi Police said it
was taking steps to address
the problem.
Delhi Police told the court
it “regrets” the inconvenience
caused to Justice Vipin
Sanghi, whose calls to the
emergency helpline number
100 went unanswered, saying
it was “inadvertent” and due
to reasons beyond its control.
In a reply filed before a
high court bench of Chief
Justice G Rohini and Justice
Sangita Dhingra Sehgal, the
police said they receive close
to 24,000 distress calls every
day and some of these get
“abandoned” as they never
reach the police assistance

of 106 such websites, environment

The statement assured the
court that the home ministry
was in talks with MTNL to
end the problem of abandoned
calls or those that queue
up with the telecom provider.

illegal online smuggling of rare
animals and their parts was
being monitored under relevant
laws existing under the
department of information
technology at both state and
central levels as part of combating
cybercrime.
Several e-tailers have been
proactive on the issue, say
WCCB officials. Prominent
ones such as Amazon, EBay,
OLX and Snapdeal claim to have
cracked down on such sales.
“We met executives from
these portals in May. We had
discussions on ways and means
in which they can assist us
to weed out such sellers on their
websites,” a senior WCCB official
told TOI.

New Delhi: No penalty had
been imposed in the past
two years for violation of
conditions for environment
and forest clearance, the government
told Rajya Sabha
on Monday.
“No penalty was imposed
by the ministry for violating
conditions of environment,
forest, coastal regulation zone
clearance in the last two
years,” environment minister
Anil Madhav Dave said
in his written reply to a Parliament
Question. He was asked
whether the government
had waived the penalty imposed
on certain companies
and institutions recently.
The answer became relevant
in the backdrop of a recent
controversy when Congress
had, on the basis of media
reports, claimed Adani
Port and SEZ Ltd was spared
