התעשיין והפילנטרופ הנודע,‏ היה אבי
דוד ששון
שושלת משפחת ששון המפורסמת.‏ הוא עבר מבגדד לבומביי
והקים את אמפריית ששון בהודו ובכל מזרח הרחוק.‏
אליהו דוד ששון משמונת,‏ אחד בניו של דוד ששון
נפרד מעסקי המשפחה לאחר פטירת אבי המשפחה,‏ ובשנת
ייסד את חברת הצליחה,‏ שאף יותר מחברת
המשפחה.‏ בסמל שלפנינו,‏ ציור פיל גדול כשעליו שטיח בסגנון
מזרחי,‏ ואריה רוכב עליו,‏ בשולי
המפעל.‏ במסגרת החיצונית העגולה שם והחברה באנגלית
ובהודית.‏ הסמל נלקח מאריזה של מוצרי החברה.‏ מצורף חומר
מצולם על משפחת ששון.‏
הציור נפגם קצת,‏ ועבר שיקום מקצועי.‏
מנורה שבת גדולה בעל שמונה קנים.‏ פיוטר מסיבי.‏ גרמניה.‏
כנראה ממחצית השניה של המאה ה – 19. כ – 80 ס"מ.‏
המנורה עשויה מכמה חלקים.‏ חלק העליון הינו מתלה ארוך עם
זיג זג,‏ שאליו מתחבר גוף המנורה והחלק התחתון ובו הקנים
משתלב בשלימות מלאה.‏ כאן יש את המתלה עם הזיג זג
שבדרך כלל חסר.‏

Large Shabbat candelabra with a “star” of eight branches. Very
heavy pewter. Germany. Apparently from the latter half of the
19
t h century. Approximately 80 cm .
The candelabra is made of several parts. The top part is a long
zigzag shaped hanger, to which the main body of the candelabra
i s attached, and the bottom part has the eight branches. This
candelabra is complete with the original zigzag hanger
which is generally lacking.

Round color illustration of a lion riding on an elephant, the
emblem of D. Sassoon & Co. of India. After 1870. Diameter:
15.5 cm.
David Sassoon (1792 – 1864), the well-known manufacturer
and philanthropist, was the head of the famous Sassoon dynasty.
He moved from Baghdad to Bombay in 1832, and established
the Sassoon empire in India and the Far East. Eliyahu David
Sassoon ( 1820 – 1880), one of David Sassoon’s eights sons,
left the family business after his father passed away. In 1867
he established E. D. Sassoon & Co., which grew even more
s uccessful then the original family business. This emblem
shows a large elephant wearing an oriental carpet, and a
lion riding on it. Caption at the bottom of the picture:
E lephant and Lion. On the outer, round border are the factory
and company names in English and Hindi. The emblem was
taken from the packaging of one of the company’s products. An
historical article about the Sassoon family is attached.
The picture was slightly damaged and was professionally
restored.
