R’ Yudel Rosenberg wrote many book on varied subject matter.
At first he published novellae and discussions on the Talmud,
later he wrote responsa and halachic rulings of particular interest
to the times. Through the years he made a compilation and
translation of the book of the Zohar on the Five Books of the
Torah, Psalms and part of the Megilot, a work that became a
classic still in use today. He also published books on medical
remedies and Segulot. However it is his activities for the
religious youth, by enriching the religious library with historical
literature in Hebrew and Yiddish using simple vocabulary
suitable for the youth, that brought him fame. His most
famous books are the ones with historical stories which he
claimed to have discovered in ancient manuscripts in the old
imperial library in Metz. Most of the books were published
i n Hebrew and Yiddish as well. Many doubt the validity of
these manuscripts, articles were written against these books
and even a whole book was published opposing the famous
s tories of the Maharal of Prague which he published. With
respect for historical integrity, it is important to note that even
if these critics are right, and some of the stories which he
published were not based on original literature, but only on folk
stories and the like, it is certain that he wrote them for the sake
of Heaven. His aim was to save Jewish youth from the storms
brewing in that period, which pulled most of the Jewish youth in
Eastern Europe towards communism, bundisim, socialism and
the like, as is well known.

ר'‏ יהודה יודל רוזנברג נולד בפולין בשנת תרכ"ד,‏ ונפטר בשנת
תרצ"ו.‏ הוא היה איש חכם,‏ גדול בתורה,‏ איש מעש ורב פעלים.‏
הוא היה רב בטארלא,‏ אח"כ עבר ללאדז ואח"כ לווארשא שם
היה מורה צדק.‏ בשנת תרע"ג עזב את פולין ונסע לקנדה,‏ שם נטל
חלק פעיל בעיצוב דמותה של הקהילה היהודית,‏ והשאיר רושם
עז למשך עשרות שנים אחר פטירתו.‏ בהתחלה היה רב בטורנטו,‏
ובסוף ימיו כיהן כרב במונטריאול.‏
ר'‏ יודל רוזנברג חבר הרבה מאד ספרים,‏ בנושאים שונים ומגוונים.‏
בתחלה הוציא חדושים ופלפולים על הש"ס,‏ ואח"כ כתב תשובות
והוראות הלכתיות בעניני השעה.‏ במשך שנים ערך ליקוט ותרגום
של ספר הזהר על התורה,‏ תהלים וחלק מהמגילות,‏ ספר שנהפך
לחיבור קלאסי שמשתמשים בו עד היום.‏ כן הוציא ספרי רפואות
וסגולות.‏ אולם פעילותו למען הנוער הדתי,‏ ע"י העשרת הספריה
הדתית בספרות היסטורית בעברית ויידיש בשפה קלה המתאימה
לבני הנוער,‏ הוא שהביא לו את הפרסום הרב ביותר.‏ לכן,‏ ספריו
המפורסמים ביותר הם סיפורים הסטוריים שמצא לדבריו בכתבי
יד ישנים בספריה עתיקה במיץ.‏ מרבית הספרים יצאו לאור
גם בעברית וגם ביידיש.‏ רבים פקפקו באמיתות מציאות כתבי
יד אלה,‏ ונכתבו מאמרים נגד ספרים אלה ואף ספר שלם יצא
נגד סיפורי המהר"ל מפראג המפורסמים שהוציא לאור.‏ משום
ההגינות ההיסטורית חשוב לציין,‏ שאפילו אם צדקו המבקרים,‏
שחלק מהסיפורים שהוציא לאור לא נתבססו על ספרות עתיקה,‏
אלא רק על סיפורי עם וכדומה,‏ בודאי שכוונתו היתה לשם שמים.‏
מטרתו היתה להציל את ילדי ישראל מהרוחות הסוערות שנשבו
באותה תקופה,‏ וששטפו מרבית בני הנוער היהודי במזרח אירופה
בדור ההיא לעבר שדות זרים כמו קומוניזם,‏ בונדיזם,‏ סוציאליזם
ועוד,‏ כידוע.‏

Rosenberg
R’ Yehuda Yudel Rosenberg was born in Poland in 1864, and
passed away in 1936. He was a Rabbi, Torah scholar and a very
active person. He was rabbi of Tarlow, later moved to Lodz and
after that to Warsaw where he was a Rabbinic Judge. In 1913 he
left Poland for Canada, where he took an active part in modeling
the Jewish community, and where he left a strong impression
for decades after his passing. At first he practiced as a rabbi in
Toronto and, at the end of his life, in Montreal.
