LURANA SHELTER SOCIETY
MESSAGE FROM THE HONORARY CHAIRS,
FARHA AND NAHEED SHARIFF
We are humbled to be the Honorary Chairs for the 2017 Avenue of Hope Gala in support of
Lurana Shelter Society. It is our pleasure to extend this important invitation to you.
According to an annual aggregated report from the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters,
2015-2016, as Alberta continues to experience an economic rollercoaster of highs and
unprecedented lows, these fluctuations in the economy have had a dramatic impact on all
Albertans, especially women and children escaping violence and abuse. These women and
children are faced with insurmountable barriers and yet every day, they are supported in
pursuing lives free from violence and abuse, thanks to safe spaces like Lurana Shelter Society.
Working towards social change through education and advocacy, Lurana Shelter has provided
safe refuge and life changing services to women and children who were victims of domestic
violence in our community. They provide safety for victims and their children, empowering
the women and children they serve. Lurana Shelter provides every necessary support to
permanently break free from the cycle of domestic violence.
Domestic violence crosses all age, racial, ethnic, sexual, gender preference, spiritual and
socioeconomic boundaries. It is our heartfelt passion to support a cause that affects the lives
of those around us. We are raising three strong, smart and capable daughters that will grow
up to have their own relationships one day. Our relationships with our families, friends, our
neighbours strengthen our connection to our community and it is the nature of these relationships
that implicate every one of us in this issue of social justice. Let this implication call upon us to
stand up, pay attention and take action. It is our obligation to use our privilege to lend a voice
to this matter. We can no longer turn away, be silent or be ambiguous. This matter affects us all.

1 DR. FARHA SHARIFF NAHEED SHARIFF
On February 25, 2017, we celebrate the 13th annual Avenue Of Hope Gala in a new
venue, The Westin Edmonton Hotel. Join us for an evening of live musical performances, a
four-course dinner, and an interactive auction experience all in support of Lurana Shelter
Society whose mission is to change and save the lives of our community’s most vulnerable
women and children affected by domestic violence.
Women living with abusive partners face enormous challenges in being the best mothers
they can be. A mother’s love, affection, availability and investment in her children’s
well-being and healthy development are powerful factors to harness in Lurana Shelter
Society’s work helping children. Let’s ‘Light the Way Home’ and create a tomorrow filled
with hope and new opportunities to foster healing and promote healthy development.
Avenue of Hope Gala raises essential funds that support the work of Lurana Shelter
Society. We are delighted to announce that all proceeds raised this evening will directly
benefit Lurana Shelter Society’s Innovative Child Care Program. Understanding the effect
of domestic violence in children is a critical part of an effective response and providing
interventions that support children exposed to domestic violence and are crucial in
minimizing the long-term harm. By understanding a child’s view of family violence we
can nurture positive changes, encourage helpful coping, build good interpersonal skills
and foster management of intense emotions. And we can support mothers as they help
their children heal and thrive.
With the success of the program, it is now a permanent part of Lurana Shelter Society
services and has been expanded to include children residing at Lurana Shelter, children
who have left shelter and children residing at second stage shelters. In 2015, the program
was enhanced to include infant care services.

business relationships, boost the value and public profile of the Society in the most
dynamic, creative and exclusive ways; while helping to offset event costs to enrich the
impact and engagement of Avenue of Hope Gala.
