PHUKET Phuket In the early days of regional maritime trade, the cape of Phuket was locally referred to as Jung Ceylon, frequently mentioned in foreign traders’ ship logs The island was on one of the major trading port for tin routes between India and China. Jung Ceylon was later known, while locals called it Thalang, which evolved to be the name of the main town to the north of the island. In 1785, Thalang was surrounded by Burmese troops who invaded the coastal area. It was under the leadership of Chan and her sister, Muk, who united the local residents and successfully fought and drove the invaders out of Phuket. As a result of such heroic deeds, noble titles were granted to Chan and Muk as Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Soonthorn. They are still highly respected by Phuket residents even today. When the development of mining, Chinese businessmen and miners later migrated to Phuket and soon enjoy thriving wealth. Phuket is the largest island in the country. The best time to travel is during the months of December to April, known as the pearl of the Andaman sea. The beauty of the island of white beaches, sparkling island-dotted seas, sincere hospitable people, superb accommodation and seafood, delightful turn-of-the-century Sino- Portuguese architecture, numerous sporting and leisure opportunities, and a lush tropical landscape-all of which have been combined to create a delightful ambience for truly memorable holidays. HOW TO GET THERE By car: From Bangkok there are two routes: 1. Highway 35 (Thon Buri-Pak Tho) Turn left at the Wang Manao T-junction and follow Highway 4 (Phetchakasem Road) through Phetchaburi province, Cha-am, Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thap Sakae. When you reach the intersection to Chumphon town (Pathomphon Intersection at Km. 499), go straight on Highway 41, passing through Amphoe Lang Suan into Surat Thani province. About 10 km. from the Surat Thani Airport, turn right at the intersection at Km. 18, and take Highway 401, passing the Ban Ta Khun District Office, Surat Thani province. Go on for about 5 km. and turn left at the T-junction onto Highway 415, passing the Thap Put District Office. Go straight about 1 km, then turn Phuket 5

left onto Highway 415. Keep going until you reach the T-junction to Phang-nga town. Turn left and follow the road for another 89 km. to reach Phuket. (Take Highway 4 until reaching Ban Khok Kloi in Phang-nga and turn left onto Highway 402). The whole journey is a total of 862 km. This is the most comfortable route. 2. Take the same route as (1) to Pathomphon intersection to Chumphon town, turn right onto Highway 4, passing Amphoe Kra Buri and Amphoe Kapoe, Ranong province, Amphoe Khura Buri, Amphoe Takua Pa, Amphoe Takua Thung, Amphoe Thai Mueang, Phang-nga province, and into Phuket. This route goes along winding roads which require low speed. By Bus: Take the daily bus from the Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal on Borommaratchachonnani Road, to Phuket. Khao Rang View Point Distance from Phuket to other province Krabi 176 Kilometers Phang-nga 87 Kilometers Suratthani 287 Kilometers ATTRACTIONS Amphoe Mueang Phuket Khao Rang (เขารัง) A great view of Phuket town, the southern part of the island, and some of the offshore islands, can be obtained by going to the top of Khao Rang Hill. There are also several restaurants featuring spectacular views of the city, a health park and a comfortable, expanse of grass at the top with a bronze statue of Phraya Ratsadanupradit, the model Governor of Phuket during King Rama V’s reign. Saphan Hin (สะพานหิน) is located end of Phuket Road. Now used for parks and public facilities at Saphan Hin. In the circle is the Tin Mining Monument, shaped like a large drill bit, dedicated to the memory of Captain Edward Thomas Miles, the Australian who brought the first tin dredge to Phuket in 1907. The monument was built in 1969 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of tin dredging in Phuket. Old Phuket Town (ตึกโบราณ เมืองเก่าภูเก็ต) is located on Thalang, Phang-nga, Yaowarat and Krabi road. The beginning of the tin boom in the 19th century led to construction of many fine mansions and shops that are still well preserved. The architectural style, typical of the region, is described as Sino-Portuguese and has a strongly Mediterranean character. Phuket 7

Shops present a very narrow face onto the street but stretch back a long way. Some other old European-style buildings of note are the Provincial Hall, the Phuket Courthouse, and Siam City Bank. Phuket Thai Hua Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์ภูเก็ต ไทยหัว) is located on Krabi road. It has been renovated to be one of the historical tourist attractions of Phuket. The Sino-Portuguese architecture displays a photos exhibition and video media which tells the history of the Chinese people in Phuket, mining, local costumes, local foods, tradition and culture of Phuket. Chinpracha House (บ้านชินประชา) is located on Krabi road. It was built in 1903 in the later period of King Rama V by Phra Phithak Chinpracha (Tan Ma Sieng), son of Luang Bamrung Chinaprathet (Tan Neow Yee). He was born in Fujian province, China, and held the military title of “Boontek Chongkul”. Ban Chinpracha is the 1 st building in Phuket with Sino-Portuguese architecture. Most of the furniture in the house was inherited from Chinese ancestors and other materials used were imported from foreign countries because trading between Penang and Phuket at that time flourished tremendously. Opens daily from 09.00 a.m.-4.30 p.m. Admission fee 100 Baht. For more information Tel. 0 7621 1281 Naka Market-Jao Fah Variety (ตลาดนัด นาคา เจ้าฟ้าวาไรตี้) is located on Viratchhongyok road. Visitors will find all sorts of items such as clothing, shoes, accessories, home decorative items, flowers, fresh and preserved food items. It is very popular with local teenagers and foreign visitors. This market is set up on Saturday and Sunday around 04.00 p.m. onwards Phuket Cultural Centre (ศูนย์ศิลปวัฒนธรรม จังหวัดภูเก็ต) is located in the area of the Phuket Rajabhat University on Thepkrasattri Road. It displays history as well as the arts and culture of Phuket such as houses, ways of life, and utensils of the city of Thalang in ancient times. Furthermore, the library collects books on Phuket’s history and culture. Siam Niramit (โรงละครสยามนิรมิต) is located on Chalermphrakiat Rama 9 Road. This is an entertainment venue of Phuket, presenting a beautiful show of Thai traditions and culture, with state-of-the-art technology in light and sound spectacular performances and special effects in extravagant setting; such as, flying angel, lightning, rain, etc. Open daily except Tuesdays, show time at 8.30 p.m. Admission fee 1,500-2,400 Baht. Phuket Aquarium Phuket’s largest settlement of sea gypsies or Chao Le, can be found on Ko Si-re at Laem Tukkae. The muddy seabed means the island is not good for swimming. There are some popular seafood restaurants on the eastern shore. Khao Kad View Tower (หอชมวิวเขาขาด) is located on eastern side of Phuket. From the top of tower overlooks surrounding scenery such as Ao Chalong, Panwa Cape, Ao Makam. Each point has a signboard to describe various places. Phuket Aquarium (สถานแสดงพันธุ์สัตว์น้ำภูเก็ต) is located on Sakdidech Road, Panwa Cape. The aquarium collect more than 100 species of fish, which divided into 13 zone such as fish models, fresh water and rainforest zone, ornamental fish zone, deep sea creatures zone, underwater tunnel zone etc. Open daily from 08.30 a.m-04.30 p.m. Admission fee 180 Baht for adults and 100 Baht for children. For more information Tel. 0 7628 2043, 0 7637 4424 Wat Chalong (วัดฉลองหรือวัดไชยธาราราม) The famous temple in Phuket, where stands the cast statue of Luangpho Chaem, who helped the people of Phuket put down the Angyee or Chinese Coolie Rebellion in 1876 during the reign of King Rama V. Ao Chalong To get there: Wat Chalong is about 8 kilometers outside town. Drive passing Surakul Sport Stadium and entering to highway 4021 (Chao Fah Tawan Tok Road) passing Ban Chalong School 100 metres, Wat Chalong is on the left. Ao Chalong (อ่าวฉลอง) This is Phuket’s principal boat anchorage. It is very picturesque but not suitable for swimming. Boats can be chartered to go to some small islands south of Phuket such as Koh Racha Yai, Koh Hay ect. A number of restaurants are on the road leading to the bay. Hat Laem Ka (หาดแหลมกา) is located on the southern of the Phuket, where is a small with rocks quiet and private beach. Phuket Seashell Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์เปลือก หอยภูเก็ต) The emphasis is on shells from Thai waters, which are among the most sought-after by collectors; however, shells from every part of the world are featured. There are numerous rarities and freaks including the world’s largest golden pearl (140 karats), large sections Hat Rawai of sedimentary rock containing shell fossils, and a shell that weighs 250 kilogrammes. For more information Tel. 0 7638 1266 Hat Rawai (หาดราไวย์) This palm-fringed beach is best known for sea gypsies, a formerly nomadic fishing minority. There are resorts and restaurants available here. A long-tail boat rental service is also available to nearby islands. Laem Phromthep use hightway 4024 (Wiset Road) until end of the road and turn right to highway 4233 about 1 kilometer. Ko Kaeo (เกาะแก้วพิสดาร) is an offshore isle about 3 kilometers out from Rawai Beach and can be reached in 15 minutes by boat. There is located monastery and also a replica of the Holy Footprint on the island. Laem Phromthep (แหลมพรหมเทพ) is located on the southernmost of Phuket, the most famous viewpoint with panoramic scenery. Local villagers used to refer to the cape as “Laem Chao”. Laem Phromthep also the location of the “Kanchanaphisek Lighthouse” to celebrate occasion of the King’s 50 th anniversary of his accession to the throne. To get there: From Chalong circle (5 Yak Chalong) use highway 4024 (Wiset Road) and entering to highway 4233 via Hat Rawai about 2 kilometers. Hat Nai Han (หาดในหาน) The middle of the beach is dominated by Wat Nai Han, which has obstructed excessive development and is the reason that the beach Phuket 13

Karon View Point is generally less crowded than other spots on the southern part of the island. A wide variety of water sports can be enjoyed, but swimmers should be alert for the red flag which warns of dangerous currents during the moonsoon season from May to October. To get there: From Laem Phromthep use highway 4233 around 3 kilometers Ao Sen (อ่าวเสน) Often overlooked due to its proximity to Nai Han, and because the connecting road runs through. The beach encompasses a range of small and large rocks, is rather quiet and has few visitors. Karon View Point (จุดชมวิว 3 อ่าว) is located mid-point between Nai Han and Kata Beaches. The beach is best known as a home, private and various accommodation options. To get there: From Leam Phromthep use highway 4233 arout 10 kilometers and entering to Kata beach road ( Soi Pak Bang) near Kata Beach Resort. Hat Karon (หาดกะรน) is the one upscale of Phuket’s beaches. Large resort complexes line the road behind the shoreline walked upon. The southern point has a fine coral reef stretching toward Kata and Ko Pu. Restaurants, bars, tour companies and other businesses are at the north end, near the traffic circle, and at the south end, on the little road connecting the back road with the beach road. Dino Park Mini Golf (ไดโนปาร์คมินิกอล์ฟ) is located in Hat Karon. This 18-hole mini-golf course in a primitive atmosphere uses the light and sound techniques to feature dinosaurs and an erupting volcano. Wat Phra Yai or Wat Phra Phuttha Ming Mongkhon (วัดพระใหญ่) is located on top Khao Nak Koet, commonly called the Big Buddha -largest Buddha- in Phuket; 25.45-metre wide and 45-metre tall. For more information Tel. 0 7624 8666 Amphoe Kathu Hat Patong (หาดป่าตอง) Phuket’s most developed beach which offers numerous leisure, sporting, shopping and recreational options along its 3 kilometers long crescent bay. Windsurfing, snorkeling, sailing, swimming, and sunbathing number among the many popular daytime activities. Patong is equally well known for its vibrant nightlife, among which seafood restaurants feature prominently. To get there: From Hat Kata use highway 4233 around 10 kilometers or from Amphoe Kathu use highway 4029 (Barami Road) around 6 kilometers. Simon Cabaret (ไซมอนคาบาเร่ต์ ) This hugely popular tourist attraction, on the hill just outside Patong, has been wowing audiences for years with its exotic, hilarious, and transvestite cabaret. With sets and choreography that would do Broadway justice, and gowns dripping with diamante, the boys who are girls stiletto-strut their stuff to full houses each night at 06.00 p.m. 07.45 p.m. and 09.30 p.m. Tel. 0 7634 2114-6 or Hat Kalim (หาดกะหลิม) is located on north of Hat Patong, this area consists of rocky but quiet beaches, and an interesting road leading up into hills with high viewpoints. Hat Kamala (หาดกมลา) The 2 kilometers long beach north of Patong is a favoured spot for witnessing sunsets. The northern end of Kamala Beach is suitable for swimming. Phuket Fantasea (ภุเก็ตแฟนตาซี) is located in Hat Kamala. Fantasea brings Hollywood-sized, Las Vegas-style entertainment to the island. Remarkable acrobatics, dazzling light work, stunning set design and a host of animal action combine in a song and dance spectacular that brings to life tales of history 16 Phuket

Hat Surin and mythology. This unique cultural theme park houses an immense theatre, a festival village offering carnivals, games and handicrafts. Open daily except on Thursday from 07.30 p.m.-11.30 p.m. Admission fee 1,800 Baht. For more information Tel. 0 7638 5000-19 Amphoe Thalang Laem Sing (แหลมสิงห์) The name means Lion’s Point. The beach is in a small, curving bay with rocky headlands at the foot of forest-fringed cliffs and is among Phuket’s most beautiful spots. Look for signs indicating the path down to the beach. Hat Surin (หาดสุรินทร์) Evergreen trees line this small, curving bay, beneath the foothills north of Kamala. The steep incline of the beach, turbulent water, and big waves make Hat Surin a dangerous place to swim. Hat Bang Thao (หาดบางเทา) is a large open bay with one of Phuket’s longest beaches. It was once used for tin mining, but has been developed into a luxury resort by the Laguna complex, a massive five-hotel. The beach is quite steep with high waves, it is not friendly for shallow-water snorkeling or amateur swimmers. Plenty of places to eat, tour companies, and other tourist facilities are available either at Laguna or in the nearby town of Choeng Thale. Sirinat National Park (Nai Yang Beach) (อุทยานแห่งชาติสิรินาถ หาดในยาง) is located near the Phuket International Airport, some 30 kilometers from town. The National Phuket 17

Hat Mai Khao Park covers an area of 90 square kilometers. The Park stretches all the way to the island’s northern tip. There are interesting beaches to visit: Hat Nai Thon (หาดในทอน) nestled at the foot of high hills has a fine strip of sand. This quiet bay is suitable for swimming. Hat Nai Yang (หาดในยาง) where the Park headquarters are located. The beach is blessed with shady pine trees providing an excellent opportunity for swimming and relaxation. Off-shore is a large coral reef which serves as habitat for several species of sea life, particularly sea turtles. Hat Mai Khao (หาดไม้ขาว) also known as the Airport or Sanambin Beach, with the famous place for watching when the plan landing over the beach. There are luxury hotels and resorts located along the beach. To get there: Take Thep Krasattri Road onto the Sarasin Bridge, then take a left turn at the direction sign pointing to Mai Khao Beach. Hat Sai Kaeo (หาดทรายแก้ว) just the northern portion of Hat Mai Khao, is a long white sandy beach with groves of pines along the shore. Mangrove Forests (ป่าโกงกาง) is located on the island’s northern tip, cover a large area of 320 acres. For more information Tel. 0 7637 2111 www.splashjun Two Heroines Monument (อนุสาวรีย์ท้าวเทพ กษัตรี-ท้าวศรีสุนทร) is the memorial statue of the heroines: Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Si Sunthon, who rallied islanders in 1785 to repel Burmese invaders. Thalang National Museum (พิพิธภัณฑสถาน แห่งชาติถลาง) is located near the Two Heroines Monument. The Museum contains a permanent exhibition of life in old Phuket, ancient artefacts and remains discovered on the coast and materials used during the war with Burma (Myanmar). Phuket 19

statues made of tin. Called the Three Kings, they are positioned in the midsections of another three large statues. Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Park (สถานีพัฒนา และส่งเสริมการอนุรักษ์สัตว์ป่าเขาพระแทว) is located near Thalang town, 20 kilometers from Phuket town. 22.28 square kilometers of virgin forest are coverd by this park, which also actively conserves a number of wild animals; they would otherwise be extinct in fast-growing Phuket. It is also a centre for study of the environment and the forest vegetation is spectacular. Giant trees supported by huge buttresses are thick with creepers and climbers of every description. One species of palm, the Governor’s Palm or White Back Palm (pam lang khao in Thai) is especially rare. Khao Phra Thaeo also serves as one of Phuket’s most important water sources. For more information Tel. 0 7637 9895 Wat Phra Thong or Wat Phra Phut (วัด พระทองหรือวัดพระผุด) is located some 21 kilometers from Phuket town past the Thalang District Office, this temple enshrines a golden Buddha image that sprang up from beneath the earth long ago. Wat Phranang Sang (วัดพระนางสร้าง) is located on Thep Krasattri Road. An old and historical landmark of Phuket, the temple was once a fort resisting the Burmese invasion around 1785. Inside the old chapel are enshrined the three oldest and largest Buddha Wat Phranang Sang 20 Phuket

Namtok Ton Sai (น้ำตกโตนไทร) A small falls, over which pours a great volume of water during the rainy season. The trees, watercourses, and pools nearby provide one of Phuket’s loveliest scenes. The park headquarters and a small restaurant with an excellent view are also at Ton Sai. Namtok Bang Pae (น้ำตกบางแป) Another waterfall in the sanctuary which is located at Tambon Pa Khlok past the Two Heroines Monument. There is an arboretum and a nursery to rehabilitate captured gibbons before returning them to the wild. For nature enthusiasts, the sanctuary has mapped out some walking trails. Further information may be obtained from the Nature Study Centre. Tel. 0 7626 0491 OFF-SHORE ISLANDS Ko Nakha Yai (เกาะนาคาใหญ่) is located in Thalang District on Phuket’s northeastern coast. This Island surround with coconut tree, white beaches and only one resort. Ko Nakha Noi (เกาะนาคาน้อย) is located on the northeastern shore, popular for its pearl farm. There are fine sandy beaches suitable for swimming and a seafood restaurant. Tourists can charter a boat at Ao Po or Bang Rong Pier. Ko Yao Yai (เกาะยาวใหญ่) is located in Phang-nga, but it is easily accessible from Phuket. It has a long beach suitable for swimming. On the island is a village of fishermen who live a simple life. A homestay service is on offer for visitors who wish to experience the folk way of life and join the villagers to do activities; such as, catching fish, wing shells, and cockles. Visitors can also enjoy studying nature trails by bicycle. Private accommodation is also available. From Phuket, a ferry leaves the Bang Rong Pier. Ko Maphrao (เกาะมะพร้าว) is located on Phuket’s east coast, can be reached by boat from Laem Hin Pier within 15 minutes. Accommodation in the form of bungalows and homestay is available for tourists. Ko Racha Yai or Raya Yai Ko Racha Yai or Raya Yai (เกาะราชาใหญ่) is located on Phuket’s southeast coast with its gleaming beaches. Sightseeing services are available from tour operators in town. Accommodation is available. A hilltop viewpoint on the bay’s south offers a magnificent view of the whole island. Ko Racha Noi or Raya Noi (เกาะราชาน้อย) 10 kilometers from Raya Yai, is the result of coral reef build up, and there are more rocks than beaches. In a small bay on the west is a boat anchorage. The waters at Raya Noi are emerald green, and the fishing there is famous, but swimming is not recommended. To get there: can charter a boat at Ao Chalong or Hat Rawai, or go to a travel agent for details on package tours to the islands. By long-tail boat, the travel time is about one hours. Speed boats operated by tour companies will make the trip in about one hour. Coral Island or Ko Hae (เกาะเฮ) is located Phuket’s south coast, is so well known for its coral reef that it is often referred to simply as Coral Island. In addition to the splendid reefs there are two fine beaches on the north and west of the island. Accommodation, restaurants, various watersports, diving and package tours are all available. Boats leave from Hat Rawai and Ao Chalong. Ko Lon (เกาะโหลน) is mountainous with level land along the shore. The mainly Muslim inhabitants engage in fishing, rubber and coconut planting. Ko Racha Noi or Raya Noi Ko Bon (เกาะบอน) A small island on the south of Phuket. It has a white sandy beach, suitable for swimming and a one-day tour. EVENTS AND FESTIVALS Chinese New Year–The Old Phuket Festival (งานตรุษจีน-ย้อนอดีตเมืองภูเก็ต) Held during the last three days of Chinese New Year. The Festival takes place on Thalang Road, Krabi Road, and Soi Rommani which are Phuket’s historical part of town. There will be all kinds of activities and performances revolving around Phuket’s past, local foods, snacks and opera performances from China. Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Si Sunthon Fair (งานท้าวเทพกระษัตรี-ท้าวศรีสุนทร) Held on March every year to commemorate the two great heroines who rallied the Thalang people to repel Burmese invaders. Many activities and celebrations are organised. Chao Le (Sea Gypsy) Boat Floating Festival (งานประเพณีลอยเรือชาวเล) Held during the middle of June and November yearly. The sea gypsy villages at Rawai and Sapam Village hold their ceremonies on the 13th; Ko Si-re and Laem La (east of the bridge on Phuket’s northern tip) celebrates on the 14 th . Ceremonies, which centre around the setting adrift of small boats similar to the Thai festival of Loi Krathong, are held at night and their purpose is to drive away evil and bring good luck. Vegetarian Festival (เทศกาลถือศีลกินผัก) Held on the first day of the 9th lunar month (September-October). Phuket islanders of Chinese ancestry commit themselves to a 9-day vegetarian diet, a form of purification believed to help make the forthcoming year “troublefree”. The Festival is marked by several ascetic displays, including fire-walking and ascending sharp-bladed ladders. Patong Seafood Festival and Phuket Travel Fair (เทศกาลอาหารทะเลหรืองานเปิดฤดูการ ท่องเที่ยวจังหวัดภูเก็ต) Starting on 1 November yearly that marks the opening of “High Season”. LOCAL PRODUCTS AND SOUVENIRS Batik (ผ้าบาติค) crafted by the island’s numerous artists into T-shirts, dresses, wall hangings, and bed coversbeachwear and easily-affordable made-tomeasure cotton, linen and silk clothing. Cashew nuts and pineapples (เม็ดมะม่วง หิมมะพานต์) are widely grown in Phuket and available all year round. The nuts are available dried, fried or coated. Oh Aew (โอ๊ะเอ๋ว) is a jelly-like dessert made from a mixture of banana and jelly fig served with syrup and ice. Oh Tao (โอวต้าว) is similar to ‘Hoi Tod’ or fried mussels in flour paste. In this case, oysters are used instead and they are mixed with flour, taro and eggs. Phuket’s Dim Sum (ติ่มซาภูเก็ต) also known among the locals as ‘Seaw Bouy’ is another popular breakfast menu that goes well with coffee. Snorkelling many noodle shops in the town; such as, Mi Ton Pho, Mi Sapam, Mi Ao Ke, Mi Hun Pa Chang, etc. Khanom Chin (ขนมจีน) a version of noodles taken at breakfast, usually served with a spicy curry sauce and fresh vegetables. Lo Bah (โลบะ) is fried pork sausage marinated in Palo herb powder. They go well with fried tofu and dipping sauce. Nam Phrik Kung Siap (น้ำพริกกุ้งเสียบ) is a mixture of dried chili and smoked shrimps taken with various fresh vegetables. INTERESTING ACTIVITIES Water Sports Scuba Diving Expeditions regularly leave Phuket for dives around neighbouring islands, and further afield, most particularly around the enduringly popular Phi Phi Islands in neighbouring Krabi province, the Similan Islands in Phang-nga province. Diving in Phuket’s warm clear blue waters is best from November to May, when the calm seas and rain free days make Phuket’s diving a truly unique experience. Sea Canoeing This form of ecotourism is available, as popular one-day tour or more extended tours involving overnight camping on island beaches, and occurs principally in the neighbouring Phang-nga Bay and Krabi province, where mangrove swamps and island grottoes are accessible only by canoe. Snorkelling This can be enjoyed in sheltered bays all around Phuket. It is particularly enjoyable at easily accessible reefs at Patong, Karon and Kata Beaches.
