LELA Intro 5-22-17

LELA Intro

I decided a couple of years ago to make on online magazine. It seemed like a good idea at the time. I wanted to create a space to consider life in all its mixed up beauty, but I didn’t want to create another magazine full of tips and hacks. I wanted to go deeper into what many women are thinking of but our magazines seem to seldom depict. That’s how I came up with LELA (Life, Education, Literature, Arts). To fulfill my vision, I enlisted three of the most amazing and talented women I know to talk about their takes on life, education, literature and the arts. I gave them guidelines and deadlines and they met them. As I mentioned, they are amazing. I, however, didn’t meet my own guidelines and deadlines. For the life of me, I couldn’t write the articles I assigned myself. I had lots of excuses. I was in a new job that consumed me. Eventually it stressed me out. It stressed me so that I eventually quit due to deteriorating health directly related to my work. And I was depressed. I’ve never been diagnosed with depression, but I’ve also never sought a diagnosis. What I can say is that as an avid reader of all things internet and as a person prone to self-diagnosis, I’ve been dealing with some serious issues that should probably get looked at. But mostly, I exercised poor judgment in thinking I could pull all of this off in the time I allocated. I think, however, what is in these pages is exactly what God had in mind all along. This introduction is my only writing. I no longer think God intended this magazine as a forum for me to forward my agenda. I have that already on my blog. Instead, I think He intended this to be a forum to collect and display the ideas of women who deserve the recognition and admiration of others. It took me a couple of years and lots and lots of failed writing to finally get in line with God’s vision. I’m glad I finally got on board with the plan He had all along. This may be the only issue, and it may not. We’ll see. But at least we’re on the path. The rest of this issue comes from the wonderful minds of three fantastic women: Tiffany Cade, Emily Lambeth Climaco, and Tabitha Grace. I’ve given you their work just as they gave it to me - with the formatting and images that mattered to them and spoke to who they are. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Roshaunda D. Cade
