HORIZONS TERM 1 2018 FINAL1

Sport Basketball

Sport Basketball Basketball is a growing sport across schools in South African. We currently have big tournaments hosting teams from other provinces and neighbouring countries. St John’s, St Stithians, St Peter’s all have embraced the sport and allowed it to flourish with in their sports curriculum. These are amongst the best high school’s that offer basketball, with St Albans being ranked 1st in 2017. These are some of the prominent schools some of our boys will look to attend for their senior school years. Being a stand alone prep school did not make the transition to offering Basketball easy. We had to consider a number of factors in order to accommodate a new adventure for The Ridge boys. We believe in knowing, growing and caring for our boys, so giving them another platform to express their talent was part of this. Time and patience allowed the boys and the school to become one in the venture to become the best. We participated in the first St John’s u13 tournament: 12 teams, 4 days, 1 winner. Through our previous endeavours, boys had some experience, participating in the 2017 Jr NBA league. We managed to get to the quarterfinals and lost to a more experienced St Benedict’s side. This is a great start to their senior school career as athletes. Our coaching philosophy “Teach them fundamentals and Basketball IQ”. We are looking forward to starting league Basketball and getting more game exposure to increase skills and mental development. By Mbulelo Ntshingana The Ridge School 20 Horizons

Sport Water-Polo The Ridge water polo club enjoyed yet another successful and enjoyable season, with the number of players and teams continuing to improve. Dedication and genuine passion for the game was evident, once again, during chilly early morning training sessions, as well as the through the never-give-up attitude displayed during fixtures. The development of skills and willingness to learn contributed a great deal to the pleasing results across both Junior and Senior teams. The 1st team in particular showed encouraging signs as they produced improved performances week after week, culminating in a thrilling 3-2 win over St Stithians in the final game of the season. A number of our u12 and u13 boys will be taking part in the Gauteng Schools winter training squad with the hope of being selected to represent Gauteng at the SA Schools competition in December. For the rest, it will be a wonderful opportunity to rest and recharge before we begin the very busy 3rd term. I would like to thank everyone involved in water polo at The Ridge this year. From the student coaches to the parents and, ultimately the boys, each person has contributed to the experience. By Mike MacFarlane The Ridge School 21 Horizons
