HORIZONS TERM 1 2018 FINAL1

New Staff Faronaaz Patel

New Staff Faronaaz Patel My name is Faronaaz Patel, wife to Rashid Patel. I am blessed with three beautiful daughters Halima, Ammaarah and Amena who are currently studying Medicine, Accounting Science and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Witwatersrand, after attending Kingsmead College. I have spent the last 10 years as Head of the Greenside Pre Primary which is a division of the Greenside Primary School. I am a qualified Montessori Directress and have a Degree in Intersen and Senior Phase Teaching. Before Greenside, I ran a playschool from home. Early Childhood development under its enormous umbrella speaks to me as I find myself on a lifelong journey to better myself as a teacher. It is with this that I find myself now at The Ridge. The Ridge encompasses an environment that acknowledges the “whole child learning”. I believe in the old Chinese proverb: every child’s life is like a piece of paper, on which every person leaves a mark. It is vital to inspire children to believe they can be anything they want to be. I believe that the classroom needs to be a safe space that encourages creative thinking and that challenges children to think out of the box. The Ridge encourages children for self-regulation, confidence and empathy. These are values that are important to me and I can already see it in these divine young lads. Holly Ferrar After 6 happy years at St Katharine’s, on the other side of the hill, I thought it was time to try my hand at teaching boys! It has been a most wonderful start and I am so excited to be part of this incredible school. I am just loving Grade 2! I am married to Guy and we have two beautiful boys of our own. Max is almost three and Hugo has just turned one. We enjoy spending time in our garden, swimming and baking together. I am a proud South African and I enjoy opportunities to engage with people from all walks of life. We have so much to learn from each other. The Ridge School 4 Horizons

New Staff Maresce Opperman If you ask me what I came into this world to do, I will tell you without hesitation: I was born to be a teacher. I spent 24 years of my life teaching different grades, from Grade 4 through to Grade 7. For 17 of these years, I taught at Parkhurst Primary, a co-educational school. When the time came for a change, I decided against the emotional girl experience and chose to explore the daring world of boys! Pridwin consumed the next six years of my life where I revelled in teaching boys. My family life revolves around my husband, Zogan, my son, Cailum, my daughter, Cassidi and three energetic dogs. There is never a dull moment when it comes to this precious pack! I am often asked how the different children I have taught compare with each other? Once again, my short experience at The Ridge has confirmed the answer to this question: children are children! It does not matter who they are or where they come from. I am excited about my new destination and I hope to be the spark that triggers a desire to learn. Diedre Leibrandt I was born in Cape Town and gained my teaching experience in and around the greater Cape Town area. I have been teaching for the last twenty four years of which half that time was spent at Rondebosch Boys’ Preparatory School. In the short time I have been at The Ridge, I have often been asked, why I decided to move to Johannesburg. Most of the boys think I have moved here because of the water crisis in Cape Town but the truth is that I wanted a change and a new challenge to sink my teeth into! When the opportunity arose to teach at this magnificent school, I accepted it. Leaving my children and family behind has been the most challenging part of my transition. I have loved getting to know the boys better both in the formal environment of the classroom as well as around the swimming pool while they were training for galas. I hope to bring a fresh approach and renewed interest in the Afrikaans Language as well as Natural Science. I am an avid reader and love nothing more than ending my day with a good book!
