So there is no longer a reference in this area, no average at
all. We only have that person’s story. In this sense, we are in
a ‘revolution’ that requires us to change our point of view” she
said.
Dr Duygu Altınok Dindar from TÜSEB - Turkey Cancer
Institute who has said that there is nearly one cancer patient
in our family, stated that although genetic and environmental
impacts determine the cancer, however in 2018 there was a
publication indicating that fortune factor is also effective as
well. Dindar said that they are talking about a complex and
intelligent disease, and that this is one of the biggest problems
they have faced. And continued her words as follows; “At this
point, personalized treatments come to the fore. For example,
if chemotherapy works in only one of our 4 patients, it should
not be given to other patients. Because chemotherapy does not
work in other patients, as a result of side effects may even lead
to loss of life. The level that this personalized treatment will
reach will become the basis of medicine. In other words, as
Hippocrates said, “there is no disease, there is a patient”, we are
going back to that point for sure. Now the genome of cancer is
being extracted, the specific properties of this is being learnt and
will be treated accordingly. When we think of both the economic
and the humanistic and medical aspects, we see that we need
more of early treatment methods at all. The only way to do this
is only possible with multidisciplinary studies. As Turkey we
are dependent to abroad for sure. We’re talking about five or
six thousand dollars for a test. But now, “Turkey Cancer Gene
Project” begins. It is very valuable that this started to be made
in Turkey as well. There are 8 million rare disease in Turkey.
We’re 80 million. So it’s not very rare for us. The genome project
aims to provide a special service for our patients so that we can
provide their preventive diagnosis and treatment” she said.
Data allows the personalization of medicine
Dr Ali Çakmak, Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of
Engineering and Natural Sciences, Department of Computer
Engineering Lecturer who has emphasized that he will
mention about personalized medicine in his presentation titled
“Personalized Disease Analysis via Metabolic Data”, continued
his words as follows; “The point where data science or data
brings us is a personalized medicine. In the current situation,
there is no more measurement in diseases and if there is no
more data, the doctors will start their treatment by looking at
their experience. If we have more data, we can go down to the
root of the disease and diagnose it and start the appropriate
treatment. We mean by saying measurement, we are talking
about blood, saliva, and urine as well... They are all connected
in the background with each other via biological network. What
kind of biological network are we talking about? Networks
showing the functioning of human metabolism. We know that
the diseases have certain effects on metabolism whether they
are metabolic or not. Our aim is to find out how these diseases
have an impact on metabolism. To reveal how effective these
factors... To understand their effectiveness in a more or less
manner...”
Onun için bu tarz etkinliklerin çoğalmasını,
tıp ve dijital alanların birbiriyle daha yakın
çalışır hale gelmesini arzuluyoruz” dedi.
TÜSEB’İn Türkiye’de dönüşümsel tıbbın
desteklenmesini sağlamak için kurulduğunu
aktaran Keleştemur, “Dünyada 90’lardan bu
yana süren genom projesini Türkiye olarak biz
de kendi ülkemizde yürütüyoruz. Aziz Sancar
Araştırma Merkezi’nde TÜSEB olarak, 100
bin kişilik genom araştırması yapıyoruz. Bu
çalışmayı 2023’te tamamlamayı hedefliyoruz.
Amerika genom alanında geliştirdiği
teknolojiler ve yaptığı çalışmalarla %12400
kar elde ediyor.” sözleriyle konuşmasını
tamamladı.
“Olaylara bakış açımızı değiştirmemiz
gerektiren bir devrimin içindeyiz”
Konuşmaların ardından çalıştay, sunumlarla
devam etti. Suisse Life Science’tan Dr. Birep
Aygün, “Dünyada Tıbbın Dijitalleşmesi:
Nadir Hastalıklar ve Biobankalar” başlıklı
sunumunda, genetik biliminin geldiği
noktaya dikkat çekti. Aygün, “Örneğin bir ilaç
geliştireceksek eskiden onun bir usulü vardı.
Yeterli sayıda hasta toplarsınız, standardize
edersiniz. Artık genetik bilimi öyle bir
noktaya geldi ki; klinik çalışmada sadece bir
hastanın olduğu ilaç çalışmaları yapabilecek
durumdayız. Dolayısıyla artık bu alanda bir
referans, bir ortalama yok. Sadece o kişinin
hikâyesi var. Bu anlamda gerçekten olaylara
bakış açımızı değiştirmemizi gerektiren bir
devrimin içindeyiz” dedi.
Kanserin neredeyse artık ailemizden birinin
hastalığı konumunda olduğunu söyleyen
TÜSEB - Türkiye Kanser Enstitüsü’nden Dr.
Duygu Altınok Dindar ise kanseri genetik ve
çevresel etkilerin belirlediğini ancak 2018’de
şans faktörünün de etkili olduğunu belirten
bir yayın yapıldığını ifade etti. Kompleks
ve akıllı bir hastalıktan bahsettiklerini ve
karşılaştıkları en büyük sorunlardan birinin
bu olduğunu anlatan Dindar şunları söyledi:
“İşte bu noktada da kişiselleştirilmiş tedaviler
ön plana çıkıyor. Örneğin kemoterapi, 4
hastamızdan sadece birinde işe yarıyorsa,
diğer hastalara verilmemeli. Çünkü
kemoterapi diğer hastalarda işe yaramadığı
gibi yan etkilerinden dolayı sonu hayat
kaybına bile gidebilir. Bu kişiselleştirilmiş
tedavinin geleceği nokta tıbbın temelini
oluşturan bir hal alacak. Yani aslında
Hipokrat’ın da dediği gibi “Hastalık yoktur,
hasta vardır” noktasına geri dönüyoruz. Artık
kanserin genom bilgisi çıkartılarak, bunun
