ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

About me

I was born in Cagliari on April 11, 1985.

In 2006 I started studying architecture at the University of Cagliari.

During my studies I have been selected to participate in various

workshops and seminars directed by visiting professors as Hans

Kollhoff, Walter Angonese, Eduardo Souto Moura and many others.

I compared my abilities with different ideas and design’s approaches,

increasing my knowledge and developing excellent skills in the

teamwork. I participated in some architectural competitions, developing

excellent ability to work independently. In 2012 I achieved the master’s

degree in architecture with honors. Later I worked in the study of

engineering and architecture “Ing. Filippo Gurrieri”. In all these years I

have always had a strong interest in the BIM design process. In 2014

I obtained a professional certificate in Autodesk revit 2015.

Now I am looking for a position as an Architect or Project Architect.

A line, an edge

A landmark on the top edge of the city of Nebida

Founded as a mining village, today, Nebida is a

small urban area of one thousand inhabitants. It’s

located on the coastal slope of the west coast of

Sardinia in an environmental system with enormous

potential that is currently undeveloped.

The thesis’s theme focus on study and design of

spaces that mark the transition between the urban

area and the natural environment, identifying those

areas and signs inserted between one element

and another, the built spaces and those that are

not. The first step has been important to understand

how the contemporary city relates its edges to the

landscape and the natural environment to avoid it

from spreading uncontrolled or creating empty /

abandoned spaces.

The strategy was to cover the lack of services for

the tourism by creating a landmark able to trigger

a process of redevelopment of the urban area. This

idea, together with the study on the use of the area

by the visitors and its different landscape qualities,

has led the focus of the project to the highest part

of the village.

The choice has focused on the creation of a landmark,

a wall, which marked sharply the beginning and

the end both of urban natural spaces, measuring the

extension of the village in the territory. The landmark

will house the space reserved to tourism’s services,

such as restaurants, hotels, health centres and

exhibition halls with the aim to address the current

lack of services and to re-evaluate a little-known

area with a great landscape value.

The inclusion of these activities will generate a new

transverse flow of visitors which goes from the top

side of the urban area to the coastal slope down

below.

The building looks like a volume that sunk into the

ground emerging or staying submerged according

to the orography’s variation, keeping a constant

height along its entire length. Hence from the

rooftop, it can obtain a path with a great landscape

value through which people have access both to

the natural area above and the urban area below.

The parts emerging from the ground appear like a

blank wall almost without openings and they host

the spaces reserved to the visitors. Patios, stairs and

opening mediate the passage to the outdoor space

that lead to the discovery of the landscape. Recesses

and the protrusions generate entrances and external

vertical connections that lead to the upper path. The

light in the indoor spaces is zenithal and comes

in through the skylights and patios, recalling the

environment of the mine. The walkable areas, such

as paths and stairs, are finished in wood while all

the finishes in concrete. These materials have been

chosen for their ability to mutate over time by the

action of atmospheric agents, recalling the ruins of

the industrial buildings in the area.

Weiterbauen

A contemporary hotel within the heart of Cagliari

“ The top of Cagliari is the fortress: the old gate, the old ramparts, of honey-combed, fine yellowish sandstone.

Up in a great sweep goes the rampart wall, Spanish and splendid, dizzy”

David Herbert Lawrence

WHERE:

- ITALY, SARDINIA

The district of Castello is the main district of the

four present in Cagliari. The urban fabric has the

characteristics of a medieval settlement, with small

streets, in relation to the height of the buildings,

giving to the district a characteristic density of built

space.

Walking down the inner street, the natural light

penetrates from the above, filtered from the building’s

rooftops, shading the streets and giving the district a

shady atmosphere characteristic of medieval cities.

Along the rampart walls, the dark inner space opens

to the surrounding area and the gulf.

During World War II, entire buildings were destroyed

by bombing creating gaps in the historical urban

fabric which have not been restored yet. This is the

context in which the project is developed during the

seminar of design, directed by Hans Kollhoff and

entitled “Weiterbauen. A contemporary hotel in the

historic centre of Cagliari “.

Weiterbauen is the strategy, it expresses the concept

of continuity of the new construction with what

already exists, capturing their qualities and making

the already built intervention and the new one as a

unique entity.

The project’s site is located within the district,

bordering “via La Marmora” on the west side and

via Cannelles to the east.

The former building has been destroyed by the

bombings, and today, there is still a fragment of the

original facade.

The idea is to re-create the old volume including the

existing fragment in order to obtain a continuous

relation between the old fragment and the new

construction whose continuity is not only physical

but also functional and formal. The project area is

divided into three gothic lots. The central area is

for the lobby that develops itself to the full height of

the building, defining a void that connects all the

surrounding spaces.

The atmosphere of the district’s streets has been

the starting point to define the one of the lobby; a

high and narrow space with the same dimensional

relationship between the width of the road and the

height of the buildings, defined by high column

and floors. The light enters from the above through

a glazed roof, in order to create a spatial bond

between the external public space and the internal

common space.

At the ground floor, it is connected on the left with

the restaurant while, on the right, with the stairs, the

waiting room, the bathroom and the patio. On the

next levels, it opens to the corridors leading to the

rooms.

The main entrance is located in Via La Marmora

where a big arch leads to the space of the reception.

This is a dark space that symbolizes the transition

between the public space and the privacy of the

lobby.

The facade is rebuilt following the guidance of the

existing fragment whereas the proportions of the

windows, their position relative to the outer edge of

the facade and the relationship between the elements

constituent the facade, such as the base, the central

body and the crowning element, are retaken in order

to create a single building. Cornices and mouldings

are proposed simplified but in a way to generate

the same shadows of the presents ones. The colour

chosen for the main body and the crowning element

is the yellow tuff, while the base is covered with

white granite.

The requalification of the waterfront and the

urban area of Calasetta is part of a regional

plan finalized for the economic and touristic

development of the coastal south centres in

the Sulcis-Iglesiente area. Calasetta is the

mediator centre of the mobility system between

Sant’Antioco and Carloforte. The waterfront

is divided into two areas characterized by

two different types of ports:a marina and

a commercial port with the passenger of

Carloforte.

The project is focused on the marina, in close

contact with the old town. The urban structure,

characterized by a square mesh, does not

amend/adapt to the circular design of the

port.

This peculiarity is the central aspect of the

strategy. The aim was to clear the area between

the port and the front of the town from all the

street furniture and vegetation, transforming it

in a single horizontal plane so that the town’s

front and its structure can be highlighted

through the contrast with the new surface.

The street lights, essential for a nocturnal use

of the area, are made by big steel cylinders.

These long and slender cylinders result to be

out of scale, in comparison with the town.

The colour of the paving recalls the sand and

the ground’s surfaces typical of Giorgio De

Chirico’s paintings, creating a metaphysics

atmosphere.

the residential part and productive efficiency for the

into three parts hosting three different functions:

production, connection and residential.

A building where architecture and nature work

together.

The program was: 40% farm, 40%, mixed residential,

15% commercial, 5% services with a maximum

height of 50 meters.

The site is located in New York City between the

10th avenue and the 18th, 19th street, adjacent to

the High Line.

The idea was to create a single building in which the

two main functions, the housing and the productive,

From the High Line, the middle section is empty,

creating a large outside space, green, public and

able to connect all the building’s functions. The farm’s

section faces to the south. Here, the spaces have

different size and orientation in order to meet specific

needs. The residential’s section consists of flats of

different sizes, from two to five beds. Internally, the

apartments overlook a large green patio.

The building closes the urban block, following the

existing buildings’ line up to the 10th avenue.

The project brief proposes the conversion of the area of

Piazza Castello from a vehicular accessible area to a new

pedestrian area with a limited vehicular access.

The proposal aims to achieve the brief’s goals, redesigning

the existing public space to meet the need of the new

generation of city user and improving one of the historical

districts of Milan. Creating a flat levelled surface overwriting

the current vehicular path, we aim to give the space back to

the human being rather than vehicles.

The project approach can be summarized with the following

principles:

- Respect - Enhance - Reuse

Respect the geometric rules that have been used for designing

these places;

Enhance the elements of the built environment and the

landscape through a clear definition of spaces and by the

use of different materials;

Reuse existing urban elements by giving them a new function

and suggesting new uses.

The connection of the city with nature has been improved,

proposing greater green spaces, perceived as open spaces

rather than flowerbeds, for attracting more people new

public attractions like the walkable water surface and new

cycle path for facilitating the communication through the city.

The materials used for the paving are the

ones of the tradition, granite, beola and

other stones.
