TIPS & TRICKS

STORY OF THE MONTH

Azure: Enabling

Analytics That Matter

Implementing a business intelligence system has traditionally

followed the same process, with very little variation. The standard

process encompasses extracting data from source systems,

transforming them into an analytical form, and finally loading it onto

purpose-built data warehouses. After that, you create semantic data

models, reports and dashboards using the data warehouse. One of

the biggest issues when implementing such a system is the

provisioning infrastructure. The configuration of servers and

licensing complexities often distract and impede the actual

implementation. For instance, it is difficult to estimate the optimal

server configuration upfront. So, we over-provision and end up

paying far too much. When budgets are low, we under-provision, but

the solution eventually grows, and we end up facing performance

problems.

Azure makes provisioning infrastructure and a lot of other things

much easier. It allows us to start an analytics solution as a pilot,

provisioning only the infrastructure we assume we need, and then

scale as more compute and storage is needed. This way we only pay

for what we use, just like we do with regular utilities. When the

solution grows, scaling up is a flick of a switch or a drag of a slider and

takes just a few minutes. What’s more is that Azure provides a

plethora of data services that can be used for any type of analytics,

from self-service business intelligence to artificial intelligence, and

not just traditional business intelligence that is mentioned above. All

we have to do is choose the best fit for the customer requirements in

terms of solution, infrastructure and technology services. The other

best part is that these services keep getting better, and updates are

automatic and free in many cases.

The bottom line is that we can focus on delivering analytical

solutions that matter to our customers without distractions and the

least impediments.

Azure be the cloud you love –

The best cloud for developers!

October 2019 Microsoft Influencer

Sajeetharan Sinnathurai

Cloud Solution Architect, APAC OCP

Microsoft

In a technology-driven world, developers are at the heart of your

company’s future innovation endeavors. Developers have more

power than ever before with the power of the cloud at their

fingertips. As a developer, it is important that you need to speed

your application development by using a broad set of cloud-first

development tools that make it easier to configure, build and

deploy applications that scale. Microsoft has been the number one

open-source contributor on GitHub for several years in a row that

also means Azure not only runs open source technology, but

Microsoft engineers are working with the community to ensure

open-source software runs best on Azure. As a developer, you can

take advantage of the open cloud by using different standalone

tools, choose from a variety of language SDKs to reuse your

existing code and skills across platforms. Also, it offers flexibility

to run the application on any language hosted in azure data

centers, on-premises or in hybrid environments. Azure’s data

platform has the intelligence built-in, making it easy for the

developers to build applications like human-like cognition and

enables developers to innovate continuously to meet customer

needs by offering a full end-to-end DevOps capability. With a free

credit of US $200, developers can easily provision up to 14

VMS, 40 SQL databases and do many more. As an open-source

contributor and a full stack developer, I’ve been thoroughly

enjoying the Visual studio integration with Azure which makes it

easier to code, build, deploy and debug large scale applications.

Let Azure be the cloud that developers love.
