A building’s skin plays a number of big roles ranging from protection and
partitioning to merging the interior and exterior spaces, all while calling upon the
building’s image to be the element that generates or disrupts the flexibility of the
internal usage in response to both the design’s purpose and the building’s functions.
In this edition of ASA, we look at various interesting projects featuring different
propositions for building skin designs such as Residence T by Boon Design, The
Commons by Department of ARCHITECTURE, Mai Yeun Ton Studio by Atelier of
Architects, PTTEP-S1 by OFFICE AT and Affected Shed by thingsmatter. In addition to
introducing projects, the first part of the Professional column considers innovations
in building skin materials. Moreover, we bring you an update on the unfolding of
Architect’16 (Back to Basic), which will be reviewed in full within the next edition of
ASA. Please stay tuned and continue reading then for further highlights of the event.
AR
Emerging
Architecture
2015
01
AR Emerging
The Architectural Review
AR Emerging
Architecture Awards
Thomas
Sou Fujimoto
Supermachine Studio
M.C.Esher
Supermachine Studio
AR Emerging Architecture
Awards
We have now arrived at the 17th year of the AR
Emerging Architecture Awards 2015, held by one of the
oldest architectural magazines in the UK, The Architectural
Review. This award is given to prosperous emerging architects
from around the world. During previous times when
the AR Emerging Architecture Awards were granted, many
newcomers were introduced to the architectural circle
including the likes of Thomas Heatherwick from the UK,
Sean Godsell from Australia, Li Xiaodong from China, and
Sou Fujimoto. Many varieties of works were further submitted,
ranging from architecture, interior design, landscape
architecture and even those that fell into the realms of
product or furniture design and installation. It is applaudable
that, of all the contestants from around the world, two Thai
contestants, Sanitas Pradittasnee from Sanitas Studio and
Pitupong Chaowakul from Supermachine Studio, were
awarded the recognition for this year.
The first project to receive award is ‘Khao Mo’
(Mythical Escapism) by Sanitas Studio, an installation
based on the foundation of the desire of city dwellers to
escape from their chaotic lifestyles. The interpretation of
the imitation of nature through ‘Khao Mo’ is envisioned
in a contemporary context and utilizes interesting components
so that the users could re-investigate/re-examine
the concept of ‘rest and relaxation’ by experiencing
a peaceful and still space through the works itself. By
actually incorporating soil and earth into the central zone
of the installation, Sanitas Studio was able to increase
the sense of nature for users. Together with this, glass
cubes placed on top of each other reflect the vagueness
of the overall external environment, and hence created
an interesting relationship between the landscape and
the users themselves. All of these factors attributed
to the fact that ‘Khao Mo’ was able to win an award—
Commented with Merit—as well.
Other than the above-mentioned award, another
success story for Thai architects on an international level
was the project called ’10 Cal Tower’ by Supermachine
Studio. This project featured the design of a playground
located on Wonnapa Beach, Bangsaen, Chonburi
Province. The interesting aspect of this structure is that
the perspective was initiated through interpretation of
the complexity of the staircases and planes that were
placed in an overlapping fashion; similar to the famous
surrealistic lithograph print of M. C. Esher, ‘Relativity’
being manifested into a three-dimensional space. As for
the principle of relativity, after much testing with threedimensional
models/replicas and eventual development
into an actual architectural work, this project became of
great interest to the people who encountered it. One
factor that allowed for this piece of work by Supermachine
Studio to be selected was that it was able to
facilitate social interaction between different groups of
users - both children and adults alike. Other than the
fact that the average amount of energy expended when
walking up the playground is 10 Calories (as its name
suggests), it also promoted both people residing around
there and passersby to come together and be a part of
an outdoor activity instead of only utilizing technology,
which has now taken on an overly important role in the
modern lifestyle. Hence it is not surprising that this
vertical labyrinth of a children’s playground that even
adults can use received the winning prize from the AR
Emerging Architecture Awards 2015.
Pritzker
Prize
Alejandro
Aravena
2016
02
02
(Pritzker Prize)
Alejandro
Quinta Monroy Housing
It cannot be denied that the Pritzker Prize is one of
the biggest and most important awards that people in
the architectural scene look forward to. For this year,
The Hyatt Foundation led by Tom Pritzker has at last
named Alejandro Aravena from ELEMENTAL as the
2016 Pritzker Prize laureate. The Chilean architect is
also known for his upcoming role as the curator of the
Venice Architecture Biennale this coming May and has
to date enlisted a stellar cast to help with the task. His
core concept to create architecture that functions as
a tool to help resolve social problems has made the
48-year-old architect very popular amongst the circle of
architects. Aravena’s well-known architecture projects
like Quinta Monroy Housing and Ville Verde Housing in
Chile are interesting examples of housing designs that
bring together residents and relevant municipalities to
play a part in designing their own spaces and neighborhoods.
Apart from redefining the word ‘architecture’
into something further from designing premises and
landscapes, one thing that cannot be missed in terms
of the steps Alejandro Aravena is taking through his
position are that the role of the architect and architecture
in today’s society have been rephrased.
NIPSEA Group, one of the leading paint and coatings
manufacturers in Asia selling Nippon Paint products
in 15 Asian countries, recently launched ‘Trend
Beyond Colours 2016 and 2017,’ the second edition of
its kind. After the NIPSEA Group studied and analyzed
the effects of colours and how behavior is influenced
by colours in Asia in order to capture the region’s
essence, the NIPSEA Group unveiled three colour
themes - ‘We Are One, ‘New Eco’ and ‘Wonder-Lust.’
Each theme features three unique colours, allowing
for consumers to explore and express their imaginations.
The first series, ‘We Are One’ features modern
colours bringing to mind the fact that new age
technologies and social media are constantly affecting
our lives and keeping us connected wherever we are.
The palette features Founder Blue, Gray Knight and
Green Tuft. The second series, ‘New Eco’ celebrates
the wonders and simplicity of Mother Earth. Inspired
by nature, ‘New Eco’ brings consumers back in touch
with the environment through its quietly stylish but
ultimately comforting colours. The palette reinterprets
Asia’s captivating nature, from the vintage soul of
Asia to the serene oceans and mighty volcanoes
personified by its three colours, Tavern Buff, Lush and
Volcanic Black. The third collection, ‘Wonder-Lust’
embodies today’s YOLO or ‘You Only Live Once’
attitude with its equally big, bold and bright colours.
The lively colours featured are Being Peach, Fast Car,
and Blue Lullaby.
The Office of National Culture Commission,
Ministry of Culture proclaims and awards the title
‘National Artist’ annually to prominent artists whose
exceptional contributions to the arts of Thailand have
played an important role in promoting and developing
the fine and applied arts within the country. Known
to be one of the most essential awards, the honor
further helps to propel young and emerging artists out
there to keep practicing and developing their own skills
and works. It is pleasant news that Krisda Rojanakorn
from Habita Architects has been awarded the National
Artist in Applied Art (Architecture) for the year 2015.
Rojanakorn’s approach toward architectural design has
been widely recognized for its unique characteristic
of giving priority to the site, environment and context,
and intervening contemporaneity to accentuate the
architecture that simultaneously harmonizes itself with
the encompassing nature. His works also cumulate the
roots of Thai culture and develop them to fit divisibly
with the present living conditions. The results of the
aforementioned processes have allowed for Rojanakorn’s
works to become widely accepted throughout
Asia and his works, including well-know examples such
as The Grand Luang Prabang Hotel in Loas, Six Senses
Ninh Van Bay Resort in Vietnam, Pansea Phuket Hotel
and the Thai-German Cultural Foundation (or Goethe
Institute) as well as larger scale architecture projects
such as the Samui Airport Terminal in Surat Thani, have
received various awards and recognitions.
WORK IN PROGRESS
Sleep Apartment
Eco Architect
1. solar
2. natural ventilation
The Sleep Apartment is a renovation project set
within an over 30-year-old building of 6 storeys located
in Surat Thani province. The architect’s research
revealed that there was a ventilation problem in the
building causing the people living inside to suffer
from overheating due to heavy sunlight during the
day. Thus, the architect sought to solve the problem
through 2 approaches: 1. Solar shading and 2. Natural
ventilation. These solutions were implemented by
designing the pattern of the facade in a manner
inspired by the process of drying rubber trees in the
south of Thailand. Doing so brought an appropriate
level of light through the building as well as provided
opportunity for the curve of the facade to cause the
building to be more comfortable.
The Neca Reiche is located not only near the
natural surroundings of Khao Yai National Park, but
also not far from the city center. Furthermore, the
Khao Yai Convention Center and Prince of Songkla
succeeded in connecting the hotel with the surrounding
context by bringing aspects of the mountain
curve and the landscape into the circulation of the
6th floor recreational facilities area. Furthermore, the
architect chose a double-skin perforated aluminum as
the main material for the facade in order to promote
a sense of connection with the rays of light during
the day. The perforated facade pattern assists further
with maintaining the correct building temperature as
well as creating a sense of privacy.
Boon
Many times we see the value of architectural
works as a whole that is composed of many components.
The oneness of the whole unit is formed with
space itself as its central point, surrounded by various
additional elements. The link within the work is created
with that space, next to which we have the main
structure or the actual form itself in addition to the
planes of the floor, walls and roof that play the role of
basically enveloping that inner open space. Together
with the various planes, we then take an interest in the
surfaces - the oneness or connectivity of the surfaces
being created from the textures of the materials themselves.
The actual surfaces are more important than
those that have been coated or painted over at a later
time. This also doesn't refer to various adornments and
additional decorations that are added on after the main
architectural structure has been successfully completed.
These may include pieces of furniture, lighting
fixtures, mosquito nets or even curtains and other
elements that usually follow depending on taste or
simply the necessity of the users. As for us, the ones
in the position of designing the architectural structure,
it is beyond our understanding.
Therefore, the significant thing for us is the space
itself and what we see as the least significant are the
decorations or additional components that have been
added on later - mostly these items are composed of
moveable elements. Visually contending with these
impermanent things emphasizes the lack of importance
of the items in the capacity of architecture and
open spaces, but is it really as it seems to be? Are the
spaces themselves centrifugal to the design? Are they
really the most important point? What really is an open
space and, as for the impermanent components and
décor, what role do they play in relation to the actual
architectural works? Can we actually explore them and
gain a new perspective or not? Either in the way that
we use them or even in the way that they can become
a part and a parcel that is one with the architecture
itself?
Consider the dimension of the spaces and the
structure of the design of Residence T by Boon Design
Architects, a private residence located in Lad Phrao.
From the scheme of the area, the designers located
the house closer to the back and in the west where
the right hand side reaches toward the north. An area
in the southern direction was encompassed with a
garden, wooden terrace and a swimming pool. The
shape of the building itself was oblong-ish, covering
the entire depth of the land area. The front ground floor
area is used as a parking area and there is a service
area at the back as well. The main staircase located
to the side at the north direction connects to the first
floor of the house and encompasses the living, dining
and kitchen areas of the home. The next floor is the
mezzanine area, an open space above the living room
and the topmost floor made up of the two bedrooms.
As for the bathroom, it is located towards the north
and is of the same structure as the staircase itself.
The open space concept works together with the
structure of the metal house, as it mainly leans on
the middle area composed of a vacant space where
most of the usable area is situated. The stairs and the
bathrooms are located in a very narrow structured path
located to the northern side, therefore allowing for
the main open internal area to be connected to both
the back and the front while interconnecting between
the floors as well. The height of each floor benefits
naturally from the metal structure and the airy, open
concept of the structure resembles a skeleton, making
the entire building to come across as very light when
taking into account the number of floors and the overall
size as well. The characteristics of the structure and
window openings allow for the profile of the building
to realize a continuous surface; the outermost surface
of the walls and the adjacent window openings are
important components that contribute to both the
open space and the shape of the house that makes it
to appear unique and different.
The surfaces used to make the external walls of
the house have an airy quality about them as well,
empty and transparent and differing from areas that
used bricks where a denser surface was required. The
main staircase utilizes materials that are both translucent
and opaque, as parts of the balcony and some
of the walls are made of steel mesh. As for the doors
and windows, these are covered by a large transparent
piece of glass with the front door and windows having
a very important location at the front of the house that
opens up to the main entrance. The side area opens up
to a wooden terrace and swimming pool located on the
ground floor. As for the narrow pathway that encompasses
the staircase and bathrooms, these are located
outside of the opening of the large glass frame. The
architects’ design also included bamboo blinds that are
hung from a floor above these openings. These bamboo
blinds located on the outer wall can be controlled
by the residents, closing or opening according to their
liking while conforming with whatever activity is being
undertaken - private or public – and providing means
to connect or not connect with the external world.
The blinds can further be adjusted to change with the
direction of the sun's rays or wind currents depending
on the time of day.
On some days the entire length of these bamboo
blinds are let down - the characteristics of the color and
the closeness of knitting of the bamboo strips appearing
as if one connecting surface when looking from the
outside, creating an illusion of heaviness through their
deep color and rough texture that, in reality, isn’t really
there. These bamboo blinds have further become a
part of the external oblong-ish shape, almost like a rock
and its surface that cannot be viewed separately.
At night, when the activity lights are switched on,
they unveil the airiness and openness that has been
created through assembly of the various materials,
recognizing that the blinds are acting as an element
that envelops the external structure, similar to clothes
that wrap or cover a body and at the same time reflect
the true self of the person wearing them as well.
Other than this, the blinds differ from wooden panels
(wood trellis), as they allow for wind to flow past, even
though there are pillars and ropes supporting them.
The surface of the bamboo blinds move according
to the wind’s currents while also creating multiple
shadow effects on the internal open space. Besides
this, when looking from inside out, the shapes of the
surfaces further appear to differ. The interesting thing
about this architectural work is the combination of the
workings of the rigid, systematic internal layout with
the more fragile and flexible external surfaces. Blinds
that are typically used as a means of internal decoration
are now reversely used externally - creating a
continuous surface area with the open space and the
architectural structure itself. If we use our imagination
to view this house again, assuming that we remove all
of the impermanent components out, the change that
occurs may enable us to better understand the meaning
of space - and the relationship between space and
those small components that we originally neglected
to think of as a part of the architectural structure itself.
The Commons
The Commons
Department of ARCHITECTURE
Department of
In Biology, the 'skin' has a duty to wrap and protect
the body of living things from dangers that surround
them. Therefore, the skin is considered to be a very
important organ for all living things that they cannot
do without. As for architecture, the walls or skin that
envelop buildings also have an equivalent importance
to the skin of living things. They not only protect the
structure itself and the architecture from the external
environment, but also reveal the 'personality' of the
building to the people viewing it. The design of the
skin or external walls of the building are extremely
important and, due to this fact, many architects and
designers give great significance to the design of this
component. One architectural work that has designed
the external walls in a prominent way is the project
called The Commons.
The Commons is a Community Mall project and a
location providing room for shops and various activities
to jointly share the space. Set in the heart of the city,
the site is situated around Thonglor Soi 17(Soi Akhaphasdu),
Thonglor Road. The building itself is made up
of four stories, with its speciality that sets it aside from
similar types of projects being that the Department
of Architecture gave great importance to constructing
the skin in a manner that would create a community
feeling; that is a place that allows for diverse groups of
people to be able to gather together and participate in
interesting activities that could be held there.
It was more than a 'Mall' that simply emphasized
shops like similar projects found around. Stemming
from the above-mentioned objective, the design of the
first and second floors of the building was made up of
a vast semi-open space called the "common ground," -
this was the central area of the project where activities
could be held.
The project also included many small shops scattered
all around. There is an outdoor feel to the building
and a 'mass' on the 3rd and 4th floors that cover
the top area and provide protection for the common
area from both sunlight and rain. This 'Mass' located
on the 3rd and 4th floors covers a vast area and is an
important feature of the overall appearance of the
building, hence the extra importance given to design of
the walls that made up the area.
One of the essential elements that affected the
design of the external walls located on the third and
fourth floors not only originated from the personal
preferences of the architects or the desire to convey a
particular type of identity - but rather for the fact that
it was designed so as to solve a major problem that
many of the community malls would face, that they
lacked order and unity. The main cause of this was due
to the design of the small shops in the projects.
"In a general community mall, there are many
people renting spaces and each shop displays and
reflects their own identity and, be it their lighting
displays or various graphic designs utilized, each could
differ completely. This would thereby create a problem
and the overall image of the community mall would not
be conveyed. As for controlling each tenant, this was
not possible at all. Therefore, we solved this problem
by designing what we called 'double skin' walls that
covered the third and fourth floors where many tenants
took up space. The Double skin walls functioned
as a representation of the overall image of the building
and, when looking from the outside, the orderliness
could be seen as it had been controlled to a certain
level,” explained Amata Loophaibool from the Department
of ARCHITECTURE of the origins of the design of
the walls encompassing the outer covering, mentioning
that one condition that the designer took into
consideration in designing the double skin walls was
that, other than creating unity for the community mall
when looking from the outside, these walls also had to
enable the people inside to be able to look outside as
well. By doing so, the people inside would gain awareness
of the external atmosphere as well, and not feel
as though they had been cut off from their surrounding
environment.
Therefore, the double skin panels were actually
made of an airy/ventilated steel mesh and created in a
manner that covered the third and fourth floors of the
building. The material created a distinct lightweight
drifting 'mass' located above the Common Ground. Yet,
at the same time - when you exclusively look from the
inside out during the day, you would feel the airiness/
openness that neither obscures the external visibility
or the scenery.
These double-skin steel mesh walls have been
meticulously designed - the steel mesh folded in a
vertical manner and some areas perforated to form
gaps, creating an interesting sequence with the visual
continuity of the linear system of the walls that connects
to the linear system of the walls located in the
Common Ground area of the building. Other than this,
the Department of ARCHITECTURE have coordinated
with Accent Studio to help in the design of the lighting
system of the walls, so that they could look special at
night as well.
The lights in the area of these walls are of a cool,
white tone, and stand out against the lighting used
inside the building that is of a warm, white tone.
Furthermore, the intensity of the cool white light is
controlled in the walls and gradually made to become
dimmer. When the light is bright it could make the
double skin walls prominent and look as though they
were drifting outwards from the building, but when
the lights became dimmer- the light from the inside of
the building would become prominent and penetrate
through - thereby revealing very clearly the interior
decor of each rented shop. This effect would be an
evolving one, almost making it feel as though the walls
could breathe and the building itself was a living thing.
Even though the project, "The Commons" stands
out for the way that its surface and external walls are
designed, and this factor helped to create an identity
and an extraordinary architectural structure, from the
perspective of the designer, this was not a "readymade
formula" that could be used in every piece of
work to achieve the same results. "From my viewpoint,
I think that whether the 'skin' of the building
we achieved is special or not is not only because we
wanted to have it. For example, our achievements
with the 'Sun One,' residences in Thonglor project also
emphasized the 'skin' of the building and that was
to solve the problem at hand, yet for an absolutely
different reason altogether. Each work has a different
rationale hence we would design that particular skin to
be able to fit into that particular context, all due to the
exclusivity of each project.
“Therefore, it was not related to the fact that we
simply wanted to use it that we used it, but I felt that if
we really wanted to use the concept of a 'double skin'
this would basically increase the construction costs a
little bit, and there should be ample supporting reasons
for doing so - thereby enabling the skin to become the
main component and creating a distinct character for
the project. Hence, if you ask me whether the skin is
important, yes it is important if there is a reason for its
use and it fits in and answers questions related to the
project.”
The team leader of The Commons also added that,
“The Commons is a very good example of an architectural
structure that has designed its walls rationally
and it is a piece of work that reflects the importance
of designing walls that have an influence on the overall
architectural structure. Other than being able to solve
various problems, it was also able to jointly create a
memorable identity for the project.”
Common
Department of ARCHITECTURE
Accent Studio
The Commons
Atelier of Architects
The age of digital TV brings with it the current
period where anyone can produce their own TV program
to express their opinions and imagination, as well as a
platform from which ‘STUDIO MAI YUEAN TON’ found
the proper starting point to start up a production house
that has since gained the interest of various production
firms. In addition to their functional space, external
appearance is also a main factor that makes this place
to be more interesting and outstanding from the
surroundings within Soi Krungthep Kriha. Atelier of
Architects, the architect firm that designed this studio,
played a big role in every process - ranging from site
selection and design to the construction.
“Firstly, the project proposition seemed open and
it was just about creating a studio so we started with
the location. The location had to be easy to get to and
functional and we found that this location fulfilled all of
those conditions. The space had a wide surface area
and there is a golf course adjacent in the rear, creating
a nice atmosphere with a very natural environment,”
described Salyawate Prasertwitayakarn, founder of
Atelier of Architects and Narongdet Wongwanchai,
architect.
Within the space, there are four studios which
are divided and separated from one another to create
a small studio (studio 1), medium studio (studio 2) and
the biggest studio (studio 3-4) which can be connected
and merged together in order to create more space.
Through consideration of function, each studio roof
was constructed with high ceilings around 12 meters
in height, allowing for the building to stand out from
the surroundings. The designer gave priority to the
functionality of space, the privacy of the production
teams and the management process that must be
carried out during production. Therefore, each studio’s
parking area is divided independently, leading to the
lobby area and studio. “According to our research, what
we were aiming to do was not only create in terms of
the functional and technical aspects inside the studio
area, but to also attempt to generate a kind of identity
for the studio and an atmosphere that would feel
comfortable and inviting to the user, all the way from
the parking area to the studio itself.”
Atelier of
The spatial organization inverses upon the
surroundings, with the front studio area requiring the
most privacy being set against the flat wall in contrast
to the case of the back area near the golf course
covered by many trees where all of the facilities such
as the fitting room, cafeteria, restroom and also the
corridor are arranged in a special manner that takes full
advantage of the outside atmosphere. Therefore, the
installed glass windows provide the user with a relaxed
experience that simply doesn’t exist in others studios.
This unique atmosphere further functions to serve as a
strong point for the identity of the studio.
The moniker of the studio, ‘Mai Yuean Ton’ is not
just a title either. Each studio room is named for the
surrounding trees such as Phayung, Thong Lang, Sak
Thong and Ratchapreuk, a concept that relates to
and represents the idea of taking on a ‘tree identity’
through architectural practice, one that contains a
sense of something durable, sustainable and full of
the potential that trees suggest. The external walls
were constructed from a basic material in order to
reduce building costs, thus the overall metal structure
was approached by the basic practice of masonry.
Brick walls were grouped into forms that inverse upon
the main gate’s size ( 5 meters in height), vertically
eroding in order to resist the disintegration of the cement
surface and subsequently modifying the upper
wall into interesting forms. “From the beginning, we
attempted to use traditional materials and approach
the project with basic practices such as masonry.
However, with restrictions in terms of weight, balance
05
and also budget, we had to look for the best solution in
order to keep the final result looking similar to the prior
scheme. According to this issue, the brick became the
main material for the external decoration and, even
though it doesn’t represent the essence of the material
accurately, it also doesn’t pretend to be something
else. From our perspective, these were the kinds of
solutions that were necessary for the site. We also
utilized tiles that are a local material to approach the
creation of the complex forms of the tile facade, with
consideration for the minor elements such as the
studio’s title (number). Through intense collaboration
with the contractor in terms of both creation and
experimentation, we attempted to create a final result
that would look as similar to the prior scheme as
possible.”
The images of the studio seem outstanding from
a design perspective and are especially successful in
external appearance. However, in fact, the elements
that Atelier of Architect emphasize are the building’s
character, the potential of a durable design that will
become more attractive over time, the depiction of
local architecture through selected materials, and
also the power of experimentation, a stage within the
design practice where once must learn to love the
problems they come across. “The result is a conclusion
resulting from experimentation. If a material was not
solid enough, we changed to another. If it seemed we
were going over the budget, we had to reduce. But
ultimately, the function of the interior was a primary
factor that affected the building’s appearance and its
resulting unique character.”
Often the foundation of architectural projects are
based on the following factors, optimizing the benefits
of the utilization of the total useable area, placing an
emphasis on beauty, and realizing the creation of a
sturdy structure. And yet, it also pertains to the effort of
the architects who design a structure to be able to communicate
their ideas in whatever works they design - a
fact that has been reflected since historic times.
The expression of the architecture is sometimes
conveyed from an abstract form to a concrete structure,
including architectural components that are eventually
constructed into a third dimensional form. At times, expressions
are so abstract that it is quite difficult for them
to be acknowledged by the layperson; therefore, what
the architects are communicating must be interpreted
(Ferdinand de
Course in General Linguistics’
or even experienced directly through the integration of
individual cultures. Ferdinand de Saussure presented
his perspective in a book called "Course In General
Linguistics," stating that the ability to convey a message
is made up of the relationship between the sender and
the receiver, by utilizing some sort of language through
the usage of 'signs.' The 'sign' is composed of two elements
including the signifier and the signified and the
language used may be verbal or non-verbal.
As for the issue of communicating the perspective
of the architect to the users of the architectural
structure, the method used to convey the message
calls upon various elements of architecture ranging from
non-verbal communication and interpretations based on
each individual’s experiences.
PTT Exploration and Production Public Company
Limited (PTTEP) Siam is a company that carries out
exploration for oil and oil drilling in Thailand. For the past
30 years, the office has been located in Sirikit Oil Field,
Amphoe Larn Krabeu, Kamphaeng Phet Province.
Various small office buildings surround the area but
there was a need for a space to accommodate larger
business activities as well. Therefore, PTTEP Siam held
a contest in 2010 that resulted in the construction of the
PTTEP-S1 office building.
The architects who won and designed this architectural
project were OFFICE AT. The PTTEP-S1 building
was composed mainly of an area that featured a 2-storey
office building and an approximate covered area of
2,000sqm. The building was designed to include a main
area composed of the offices, a meeting room and a
hall, all made to surround a "court" that had been dug
out right at the center of the building. The area resulted
in a visual continuum spanning from the first floor to
the second floor when entering from the main entrance
that was rather intense due to the dark grey color. The
concept behind the use of this dark grey color as an
outer covering with an internal glass shell was rooted
in a desire to visually create something contradictory
to what one is normally accustomed to. The entirety of
this part of the structure looked as though it was drifting
out of the ground floor and the contradictory nature of
the space hence became an outstanding feature of the
building that could quite reasonably become the entrance
leading from the area of level one. The architects designed
the area to include grass that provides a flowing effect,
moving from level one to level two. Furthermore, when
one looks at this grass field from the front, it appears as
if it were linked to the ground level as well.
The concept that the architects wanted to present
had two outstanding 'signs' and the forms of the signs
that they wanted to convey were non-verbal, with the
design language traversing through an empty space
and utilizing various architectural components. The
first sign was meant to convey reference to the earth
and soil and was carried out through the arrangement
of the ground surface and utilization of the space as
they meet at a glass box on level two, further providing
comparison to the creativity of the organization. The
grass surface on level one was designed as an analogy
representing the earth and soil while the architects
suggested that it was similar to the notion of one
going underground to explore for oil, the surface of
the ground therefore becoming an elevated grass area
integrated with stairs and creating an obscurity of usage.
The design allowed for its use as both a thoroughfare
(passageway), as well as a seated area supporting
various activities that require a semi-open area. Other
than this, the ambiguous area of the staircase and the
so-called seated area connect the sloped area that
gradually connects level one with level two.
The second 'sign' was related to the identity of
PTT itself, as they wanted to convey a message about
the innovativeness of the enterprise. It was related to
energy and exploring sources of energy derived from
oil located underground. Therefore, the sign that was
to be communicated by the architectural structure was
meant to reflect the company's ideals as well, hence
the building was built to utilize less energy, thereby
creating a good image for the organization. The design
encompassed an external shell made of two layers of
walls with an internal glass wall enabling it to receive
sufficient natural light. Yet, at the same time, PTT also
wanted to implement energy saving measures through
adjustment of the internal atmosphere to a more comfortable
environment, hence the choice for the outer
shell to be made of sunshades composed of vertically
designed aluminium fins that could reduce the amount
of sunlight entering into the building. The aluminum
fins, who have Assistant Professor Rungroj Wongmahasiri
from the Department of Architecture, King
Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang behind
their design, have a width of 40cm and were set at a
distance of 30cm apart from one another. Other than
succeeding in reflecting the identity of the company
through its energy saving methods, the external shell
of the building features vertical fins allowing for the
frontage of the building to utilize a method to develop
its surface texture known as a 'negative' approach.
Furthermore, the initials of the organization PTTEP-S1
are spelled out within the design of the aluminum fins;
however, people entering the building are only able to
see the initials if they look from a slanted angle and not
when they are facing the aluminum fins directly. The
wordings on the shell change according to the visual
angle and distance as well.
Robert Venturi
‘Affected Shed’
Generally speaking when we talk about the outer
appearance or 'skin' of the building, we would just look
at it as a component plays a subordinate role; that is, it
has the duty of just being a part of the overall decor, or
to basically cover up undesirable parts of the building.
But if we attentively consider the method of utilization
of this component, we discover that the skin of
the building can actually create architectural qualities/
characteristics for the building, and also to be able to
interestingly reveal more about of the internal spacefar
beyond our limitations of previous definitions. It
could be due to the influence of a specific form from
the details of the appearance of the building, that the
architects intentionally created-this may append with
the dynamics of the overall environment. Therefore the
end result of the appearance of the building, can actually
affect the architecture — far beyond what we can
remember and that had been defined earlier.
The presumptions that we have mentioned above,
can be seen very clearly and in a very interesting manner
through the "Affected Shed" project, this is a family
house that has been designed by the architects from
thingsmatter, they wanted to re-define the significance
of the words 'Decorated Shed' (people are familiar with
this through the writings of Robert Venturi - Learning from
Vegas). The word 'Affected' replaced the word 'Decorated',
to reflect the initial perspective of the project
and its aim was to communicate about the capability/
functionality of the appearance of the building, Other
than just being part of the decoration, it could also
influence how we visualized the internal concealed
areas as well.
'Affected Shed' is located in Sukhumvit 101, in
the city of Bangkok. As for the actual area and overall
surrounding environmental context, it lacked any
exclusive identity and was just an ordinary empty
space that was lacked overall maintenance. Therefore
this became an important aspect faced by thingsmatter
and became the resolution for designing this residential
house. Hence it was clear they could not use
the benefits of the surrounding landscape, but instead
would be using the benefits of the 'interior world',
or the personal space for the family, this permeated
through the architectural works of the house itself.
An ordinary house that is standing on an even more
ordinary space, but became something that was
extraordinary inside, covering a total floor area of
345sqm.
2nd floor plan
The architects chose to build an 'interior world' by
dividing the 2 buildings that were of different sizes- into
two distinguished parts — even though the structures
of both buildings were already separated. As for the
utilization of the inner space, both parts could be used
together in a very interesting way. The block that covered
a smaller space, was used as a porch for cars and
motorcycles, entrance hall and as for the multi-purpose
area and guest bedrooms these were located upstairs.
As for the larger sized building — a major part of the
ground floor area encompassed the living room,
entertainment room and kitchen/dining room. As for
the bedrooms for the family, the architects chose to
use the rooms that were located on the second floor,
the structure of concrete boxes with a span of four
meters-enabled the architects to make the rooms well
ventilated and receive sunlight from multiple aspects.
As for creating the connecting passageway- it is
similar to a staircase that interfaces both building blocks.
This house has become a point of interest, that has
made the project quite extraordinary other than the
factor of making the floor plan remarkable, the private
space (or 'interior world') that has been created
between the two blocks, including the inner connecting
area and also the outer part of the building the court/
garden area, that is just partially encircled is also
equally interesting as the internal space. The architects
decided to use their limited budget with ordinary construction
techniques that were inherently economical
and yet all the areas still met their objectives. By doing
this they were able reduce the construction costs; as
for the remainder of the budget it was used in designing
accessory components. Starting from the details of
the connecting passageway, including the selection of
materials for the outer appearance of the building to
create a distinct identity for the building, along with
selection of the furniture and designing the inner
landscape to reflect an 'interior world' — it became a
remarkable and extremely fascinating home.
As for the first accessorial component that was
located at the connecting passageway of the buildingthis
was designed in a very interesting way and made
by assembling metal mesh within galvanized frames.
As for the extended area, that encompasses the walls
that are facing the court/gardne, they utilized open
ended large sized hinges; this assisted in combining
the inner and outer spaces in a very bold way. A lot of
details were put into the selection of materials —
fiber-cement was used for the louvers to protect
against the sun, a poly carbonate material was used
for the upper landing of the connector — this was to
conceal the view of the neighboring roof tops, These
factors were taken into consideration as the architects
had to work with the limitations that they were facing.
They basically used the specific qualities of industrial
materials, to create a novel way to experience space
itself, and this too within a manageable budget.
As for the arrangement of the windows of the
house, it was another interesting factor that was taken
into consideration. The windows were intricately
arranged so that they could basically handle the issues
relating to the location of the project, which lacked
any interesting factors. The architects chose to use
a variety of small windows, to solve this issue it also
assisted in reducing excessive heat from entering the
building. At the same time it may look very basic, and
the external may not look very orderly due to the random
arrangement of the windows but these windows
are aligned to match the internal use- controlling the
amount of sunlight that enters and furthermore it also
creates a sort of interesting frame to view the outdoor
scenery.
The last significant factor that reflects the background
of the name "Affected Shed” is the component
that encompass the screen, or the external appearance
of the building. The details of this portion include a
metal mesh that is stretched out within a galvanized
iron frame, and are attached to both the southern and
western walls, The selection of this material and the
color as well was to match the grey rendered walls,
this enabled the architectural project to have its own
identity and unique qualities in decoration or we can
call also say that it created an aesthetic affect when
the screen was hit by sunlight as it animated the walls
with delicate shadows, concealing the unevenness of
the finishes behind that were probably created during
the construction.
An obvious factor that was quite remarkable for
this architectural project was that it was evidently
reflected its name "Affected Shed"; the usage of
minor architectural components to influence the overall
architectural structure and yet another factor influenced
by these components was the actual behavior
of how the of the residents inhabited the house as
well. In fact a bigger influence of this building would be
a repercussion effect on the architects who designed
it as well. Lastly, what thingsmatter displayed through
this accomplishment was to allow the word 'skin' of
the building to stand astride over the word 'decoration'
to 'affected' in a very influential way.
Earthen Materials
Dr.Greg Heness
University of Technology Sydney (UTS)
Materials
(Brownell,
Antoni Gaudí
Therme
(Thermal Mass)
Gantenbein
Bearth &
Deplazes Architekten และนักวิจัย Gramazio & Kohler
Architecture and Urbanism
90 asa professional
professional asa 91
06
05
Horten
Historic Narrative Telling
from Remaining Traces
19, PRINCELET STREET
19, PRINCELET STREET
Princelet
David Rodinsky
ลอนดอน (the Museum of London)
Suitcases and
PRINCELET STREET
The identity of PTT looks inward at itself, as the
office wanted to convey a message in tune to the
innovativeness of the enterprise and related to the
exploration for sources of energy derived from oil
located underground. Therefore, the sign that was to
be communicated by the architectural structure was
meant to reflect the company’s ideals as well, hence
the building was built to be, first and foremost, energy
efficient. An aluminum fin was utilized for the outer
shell and is comprised of sunshades with a width of
40cm that are set at a distance of 30cm apart from one
another. This contributed to a reduction in the direct
sunlight entering into the building. Furthermore, other
than succeeding in reflecting the identity of the
company through its energy saving methods that are
spelled out within the design of the aluminum fins,
people entering into the building are only able to see
the initials of the firm if they look at the structure from
a slanted angle and not when facing the aluminum fins
directly.
Home: Place and Identity, Living History,
Alternative Spaces, Danger, Staying Power และ
Change ในหัวข้อแรก (Home: Place and Identity)
‘Living History’
Yangon Echoes: Inside
A Tradition
of Serenity: The tropical houses of Ong-Ard
Rachamankha,
2000/ Three-Family Residence,1992/ Weekend
Residence, 2006/ Courtyard House, 2006/ Urban
Residence, 2010/ Mae Rim Residence, 2006 และ
Tamarind Village, 1999
Professor Errol Barron
