Program Note

I never saw snowfall as a child growing up in Southern California; it was more a phenomenon

that I saw in cartoons or read in children’s books.

I did, however, witness my first ash-fall when I was in elementary school. I looked up into the

clouded sky and saw specks of ash falling from it. Excited but puzzled, I looked to my

elementary school teacher during recess and held out my hand. “Oh, that’s ash from the

wildfires,” she said. At that time, I couldn’t comprehend how an enormous forest fire could

create a small flurry of ash-flakes.

Now I have the ominous understanding that something so magical and beautiful comes from

something so powerful and destructive.

Conductor’s Notes

This version of Ash is playable with as few as five players, one per part. When assigning parts,

strive to achieve a balance across the ensemble for proper musical effect.

Across the parts, there are measures where some notes are doubled in octaves. When one note

is smaller than the other (cued size), the regular-size note is the preferred note. Use the cued

note if the player is unable to play the regular-size note. When both notes are the same size,

the choice of which note to play is up to the conductor. In most cases, the choice will be

obvious as some extremely high or low notes may be out-of-range of younger players. It may

also be appropriate to cover both octaves (regular size notes), if multiple players are available.

The designations 'solo' and 'tutti' apply across the parts, not the staves. Thus in Part 1, one

player covers the 'solo' for all assigned to Part 1, and so forth. Of course, this may be adjusted

for proper balance at the discretion of the conductor. Designations for ‘1 or 2 Players’ or ‘2 or 3

Players’ may include mixed instruments on the same part.

The percussion parts are optional in this version. If percussionists are available, the order of

preference for part assignments would be Percussion 1, Percussion 2, then Timpani. Switching

between parts is also possible as there are never more than three instruments sounding at any

given time. The percussion parts provided here are identical to the original version.

In Part 2, Alto Saxophone, there are numerous notes doubled in octaves between measures 72

and 83. Use the upper octave only with a player capable of playing with control and excellent

intonation. If more than one alto saxophone will be assigned to this part, then no more than

one player should play the upper octave. When in doubt, ask all players to play the lower notes.

Although not specified in the score, a Bb Soprano Saxophone could play the Bb Part 1. Octave

choices are left up to the conductor.

If a Bass Trombone is available, consider using the Part 5 Tuba part for this purpose. The tuba

part has been edited for potential use by bass trombone.

If enough players are available, consider using woodwinds only for the first 22 measures. In the

original version, brasses do not enter until the pick-up notes to measure 23. Using woodwinds

only in these opening measures will retain some of the sonority and musical intent of the

original. Player availability and skill level will determine if this option is possible.

Similarly, the original version closes without trumpets, saxophones, or tuba in the final seven

measures (pickups to 90 through 96). Again depending upon player availability, consider not

using these instruments for the closing. Player availability and skill level will determine if this

option is possible.
