Setup of 15 drums
Any combination of 15 drums of various types (tom-toms, roto-toms, congas, bongos, any other type of
drums) and of 15 different approx. pitches can be individually chosen for the setup. The size of drums
for the setup may vary according to available drums and/or according to space available on stage. It is
important to include at least one drum with low sound and large resonance (for instance: low tom-tom).
If drums can be arranged in two rows, the
line-up in the figure on the left may help to
optimize the practicality (1=lowest pitch,
15=highest pitch).
Notation for waterphone
The waterphone should either be held in the hand (“suspended”) or placed on a piece of acoustic foam.
A bow and hard plastic mallet should be used to play the metal rods, which should be allowed to vibrate
freely (if not indicated otherwise). Three different contact points for striking these rods are specified in the
score:
- approx. 3 cm from the base: contact point for the bow when generating low [ ] frequencies
- approx. 2 cm from the base: contact point for the mallets and brush
- approx. 1 cm from the base: contact point for the bow when generating high [ ] frequencies
- at the base of the rod
Hold the waterphone in the hand (“suspended”) and shake it slowly
(shaking causes the instrument to produce a vibrating, ethereal sound).
Place the waterphone on a piece of acoustic foam
(the pitch remains stable, because the water inside the bowl is stationary).
rod or pair of rods (individual choice)
Bow/slide rapidly across any series of neighbouring rods of descending pitch (shorter
