The 2021 ACTFL Virtual Annual Convention and World Languages Expo was held from
event promotion, and conference organization. Professor Shuai Li (Georgia State University) and
Professor Zhongqi Shi (Columbia University), current members of the Board of Directors, served
as the CLTA program chairs. With timeslots allocated by ACTFL, this year CLTA sponsored 8
Simulive Sessions and 22 On-demand Sessions to share the best practices and resources in
Chinese language learning and teaching. As a gold exhibitor, CLTA also held virtual meetings on
the ACTFL virtual platform.
Identifying Trauma Responses in Yourself and Your Students. Executive Director Sue-mei Wu attended
these two sessions on behalf of the CLTA. Prior to the Assembly, the CLTA steering committee
responded to ACTFL’s call for organizational self-reflection and shared with ACTFL our
association’s examples and strategies in addressing these key topics, including what we have
already accomplished, what is in process, and what we are visioning for the future.

In preparation for the next year, Professor Shuai Li (Vice President) and Professor Zhongqi Shi
(Chair of Media and Publicity Committee) were appointed Program Chairs to take charge of the
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that the 29 th International Conference on Chinese Language
Instruction, sponsored by the East Asian Studies Program and Princeton in Beijing, will be held in a hybrid
in-person and online format (tentative), on the campus of Princeton University, on Saturday, April 30, 2022.
After 42 years on the Princeton faculty, Professor Chih-p’ing Chou transferred to emeritus status in
July 2021. Following the Conference, we will hold a Reception to celebrate Professor Chou’s career and
reflect on his abundant contributions to the fields of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and Chinese
language study abroad programs.
As in previous years for our conference, we welcome proposals for presentations concerning all
types of research on Chinese language learning and teaching. The conference aims to include, but is not
limited to, the following themes:
Development of Materials
Culture in Language Study
Testing and Assessment
Instruction of Classical Chinese
History of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language
Language Learning for Heritage Students
Innovative Classroom Applications of Second-Language-Acquisition Theories
Computer-Assisted Language Learning
Instruction of Chinese Characters
The Program Committee accepts submissions of one-page proposals, in either Chinese or English
relevant to the themes listed above. Proposals must be submitted by the January 15th, 2022, deadline.
Proposals will be reviewed by a committee and proposals selected for presentation will be grouped into
panels according to themes.
Limited funding for travel expenses (up to $500.00 if traveling from overseas, $300.00 if traveling
by airplane in North America (includes Canada), including local transportation; and up to $100.00 by
automobile or train, including tolls and incidentals) will only be available to participants who present papers,
one person per presentation per institution. We realize this may not be sufficient to cover the actual cost of
travel, but we hope you will be able to secure additional funds from your home institution.
Interested parties, please submit a Reply Form here: https://pib.mycpanel2.princeton.edu/index.php/
Formal Publication Announcement
Continuing from last year’s Conference, proposals selected for conference presentation will have the
opportunity to be included in a formal publication. Note: Presenting in the conference does not automatically
guarantee your paper for inclusion in the formal publication. A review committee will deliberate on the
entries received and make final determinations on which works will be included in the formal publication.
Interested conference presenters must submit complete, fully formatted papers by the July 31, 2022,

We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to MIDDLEBURY LANGUAGE
CLTA Headquarters
Middlebury Chinese School 明 德 ⼤ 学 中 ⽂ is a renowned language immersion program
for college students and adults with over 50 years of history. Two programs run on
campus each summer: an 8-week language intensive offering levels from beginner to
advanced, and a Master's degree program that students complete across multiple
summers.
The 8-week language intensive helps students make immense gains in their Chinese
language progress in a short time, no matter what their level is at the beginning of the
summer. Watch this short video from a former Level 1 student to see why she called the
experience "incredibly rewarding." The program is an ideal springboard for students
before they embark on a study abroad program or internship, or as an alternative to
study abroad for some students.
CLTA Newsletter Vol. 46 No. 1

The Master's program prepares Chinese language teachers for both K-12 and higher
education, giving graduates the knowledge they need to succeed in the areas of
linguistics, culture, and pedagogy. Open to current or aspiring Chinese language
educators, the MA program is a diverse group of students who take advantage of the
summer environment in which they learn alongside the students in the 8-week
intensive.
