Aims and Scope 

Initiated by the Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA (CLTA-USA), 

the journal K-12 Chinese Language Teaching (K-12 CLT) aims to serve and 

link preschool and K-12 Chinese language instructors, immersion and Chinese 

heritage language instructors, Chinese language teacher educators, pedagogy 

researchers, program leaders and policymakers. The K-12 CLT focuses on 

sharing experiences and exchanging ideas in teaching, research and professional 

development.

尊敬的美国中小学优异中文项目获奖同仁们 : 

值此 2023 年美国中文教师学会年会召开之际 , 我们谨代表学会热烈 

祝贺各位所领导的中文项目荣获 2023 年美国中小学优异中文项目的殊荣 ! 

本次评选活动由美国中文教师学会《中小学汉语教学》期刊首创并 

组织 , 吸引了来自美国各大州的中小学积极响应。在评委何文潮教授、 

刘美如教授、谭大立教授 , 以及张正生教授的精心评审下 , 最终评选出 

了 20 个中小学优异中文项目。这些项目的突出特点包括 : 学校类型全面、 

学生具有广泛的社会代表性、教师学历经验丰富、课程设置丰富完善、 

教学理念先进、文化活动多样、教学成绩斐然、社会反响正面。本次评 

选活动的成功举办 , 是对献身于美国中小学中文教育事业的老师们的鼓 

励和认可。 

这 20 个中小学优异中文项目的成功经验已分批刊登于本年度的《中 

小学汉语教学》期刊。这些学校的先进做法将为美国中小学中文教育树 

立良好的示范 , 并为大学阶段的中文教学提供启示 , 从而促进 K-16 阶段 

中文教育的衔接和合作。 

最后 , 我谨代表学会衷心感谢《中小学汉语教学》编辑部全体老师 

多年来的无私奉献 , 让期刊在引领美国中小学汉语教学、促进中小学汉 

语教师职业发展、展示中小学汉语教学成果等方面做出更令人欣喜的贡

最近二十年来 , 中文教学在美国多地的中小学阶段均取得了巨大的 

发展 , 形成了丰富多彩、质量上乘的各类教学体系。我刊于 2022 年 9 月开 

启评选 “ 美国中小学优异中文项目 ” 的活动 , 于 2023 年 4 月在美国中文教 

师学会年会上首次公布评选结果 , 引起了广泛的反响。本次期刊即刊登 

了其中部分学校的先进事迹 , 供大家交流分享。 

在多方关注期盼下 , 本刊现公布 2024 年 “ 美国中小学优异中文项目 ” 

的申报条件和材料提交要求 ( 请扫码或阅读申报表 )。希望各位中小学 

教师踊跃展现师生高光亮点 , 收集推广成功经验 , 帮助大家更好地发展 

现有中文项目 , 孕育新兴课题 , 并且实现互相学习、共同进步的目标。 

本次申报成为 “ 美国中小学优异中文项目 ” 的基本条件仍为 : 

最近 

1 该中文项目至少有五年的历史 , 包含三个不同的教学层级 ; 

2 在项目中任教的教师平均学历水平达到硕士 , 平均教龄在 

三年及其以上 ;

Bullis Charter School (BCS) is a K-8 public charter school 

located in Los Altos, California. BCS is renowned for being a 

model school and a leader in many educational areas, like 

Project Based Learning, STEAM, personalized learning, world 

language, and teaching 21st-century success skills. 

The awards BCS has received include USA Blue Ribbon School 

2014, USA Future Ready School 2015, and Biliteracy Pathways 

Awards School (since 2016), etc. 

QUICK FACTS 

In 2003, parents and members of the community joined 

together to form the Bullis Charter School, a nonprofit public 

benefit corporation, within the boundaries of the Los Altos 

School District. 

It is a K-5 Content-enriched FLES (Foreign Language in 

Elementary School) Program, Grade 6-8 World Language 

Program. 

Student demographics at BCS: 1067 students in grades 

K-8, with diverse backgrounds and more than ten different 

languages. BCS supports all students, including those in 

Special Education, from low socio-economic backgrounds, and 

English Language learners. 

The goal of the Chinese Program at BCS is that every 

student will acquire proficiency in listening, speaking, reading 

and writing Mandarin, while developing an understanding of 

themselves and others, an interest in learning languages, and a 

global perspective.

Chinese New Year celebration: This is a joyous day 

of learning and performances for our community. Events 

include face-changing, martial arts, traditional music and 

dance, dragon dance as well as organized cultural activities.

school mission. Students visit sister schools and families in 

China, conduct scientific research, and experience authentic 

Chinese culture. 

Co-curricular/extra-curricular activities: Our K-8 

learners participate in special outdoor assemblies where they 

learn the basics of Kungfu while practicing coordination and 

concentration. We also offer Chinese games, paper cutting 

and folding, Chinese calligraphy, painting and reading, 

badminton, Chinese checkers, Mahjong, and more activities 

to BCS learners. In 2020, Middle School learners visited some 

senior centers and helped people fill in Census online. 

Bookmark Design 

My Name, My Identity 2021: This project promotes 

the awareness of the language and culture and fosters a sense of belonging by learning the stories and 

uniqueness of our names and pronouncing the correct names. Students build positive relationships with 

their classmates, teachers, and families through the project. 

Asian Culture and Heritage Middle School Club Middle School learners take initiative in 

designing, leading, and running the club. In the club, learners have opportunities to explore their interests 

and passion for Asian music, dance, food, TV shows, movies, and more.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT 

Chinese Speech Contest: BCS learners actively participate in the Chinese Speech Contest, 

hosted by CLTAC each year and have won 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and honorable mentions. Students develop 

speaking, writing, listening, and presentation skills through the contests. 

Biliteracy Pathway: BCS learners demonstrate progress toward proficiency in speaking, 

listening, reading, and writing in one or more languages in addition to English and receive the Biliteracy 

Pathway certificates in 5th and 8th Grade. 

CLASS Writing Contest: BCS learners are tasked with using their Mandarin language skills to 

write about how they can make our world a better place. They are so proud of themselves for being risktakers 

and global citizens as they entered and won the contest.

Ms. Katie Lin,

been devoted 

to teaching 

Mandarin 

since 2006. 

She joined Bullis in 2017 and has 

been working with the team to 

collaborate on the K-8 

curriculum. Katie presented at 

NCLC, CABE, Asia Society, etc. to 

share her expertise in 

differentiation, and innovative 

teaching, and to raise awareness 

of Asian kids’ pride. 

Ms. Qinglin 

Yang, 杨清林 , 

joined Bullis in 

2009. She was 

named Teacher 

of the Year by 

the County Office of Education. 

She received the Cares and Shares 

Award from the City of Los 

Altos. Qinglin is a mentor at the 

Reach University Teacher 

Induction Program. Qinglin has 

delivered many presentations at 

the annual CABE, NCLC, NABE, 

etc.

even though they have chosen to maintain anonymity by not disclosing their names and photos. Their

Colorado Academy (CA) is an educational community for 

students in Pre-K through Grade 12, with a total enrollment of 

1,041 students in 2022-23 school year. CA students highly 

motivated, perform above-average to exceptional ability, and 

seek academic challenge and community engagement. CA 

provides a relevant and dynamic liberal arts education for an 

ever-changing world. We work to create learners, leaders, and 

inspiring, thoughtful individuals who are ready to transform 

the future. 

QUICK FACTS 

The Chinese program at Colorado Academy was founded 

in the 2009-2010 academic year. The average class size is 12. 

The Chinese program offer a variety of levels, including 

level 1 - 4, AP, and Topics. 

Over 95% of the students who enroll in the Chinese 

program have little to no Chinese background. 

Over 95% of the students in the program study Chinese 

for four years in high school, and some continue with more 

in-depth learning when they go to college.

Bookmarks made with leaves on campus 


During the annual Chinese New Year celebrations, 

students present their new year wishes through Chinese 

calligraphy, a dragon crafted with hundreds of handwritten 

characters, and other beautiful performances. 

Students create Chinese character bookmarks using fall 

leaves - a delightful way to enjoy language learning while 

utilizing local resources and contributing cherished memories 

to the community. 

Chinese Calligraphy Club is organized by students to 

enhance Chinese language and cultural learning. 

Students have 2-week summer travel and community 

service projects in China every other year. 

Students assisted The Tourism Office of Colorado in 

promoting Colorado to Chinese travelers by creating Weibo 

posts and videos. 


Four students have received awards in both local and 

national speech contests, including the Colorado Chinese Speech 

Contest in 2022 and the National Chinese Speech Contest in 

2023. 

In 2014 and 2018, three students were awarded 

scholarships from NSLI-Y to study Chinese in China. 

In 2022, one student received the Schwarzman Scholarship 

( 清华大学苏世民书院奖学金 ) after three years of studying 

Chinese at CA and continuing his language studies for an 

additional four years in college. The Schwarzman Scholar was 

granted the opportunity to pursue a fully-funded Master's degree 

program in Global Affairs at Schwarzman College, located on 

the campus of Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. 

Students take AAPPL tests annually, and the majority of 

them demonstrate proficiency meeting or exceeding the ACTFL 

standards. Remarkably, all of the AP students achieved 

Advanced Low proficiency level in 2022.


In 2006, Ms. Ning Wei, 魏宁 , pioneered the first Chinese program for students 

in the Jefferson County School District of Colorado. Now a revered Chinese 

teacher at Colorado Academy, she was honored as the "Teacher of The Year" for 

world languages in Colorado in 2023. With seventeen years of experience, she 

continuously enhances her teaching through professional development and 

integrates real-world experiences into her lessons, providing students with 

comprehensive language and cultural knowledge.

Durham Academy Upper School STEM 

Building 


Durham Academy is a PreK-12 independent school founded in 

1933 as Calvert Method School. In 1959, the school changed its 

name to Durham Academy and began an expansion. The 

purpose of a Durham Academy education is to prepare each 

student to live a moral, happy and productive life. The 

development of intellect is central to such a life and, thus, 

intellectual endeavor and growth are the primary work of the 

school. The acquisition of knowledge; the development of 

skills, critical judgment and intellectual curiosity; and 

increased understanding are the goals of the school's academic 

program. 

QUICK FACTS 

 

Durham Academy Chinese Program was established in 

2009 and has, to date, provided Novice to Advanced level 

courses for non-heritage and heritage Chinese learners. 

 

In the Middle School, DA offers Novice Mid-High 

classes. In the Upper School, classes range from Novice to 

Intermediate High levels. Heritage track is provided for those 

who speak Mandarin at home. 

 

Currently 96 students from 5 th to 12 th grades are enrolled 

in 10 different levels in the Middle School and Upper School. 

Among them, there are 11 students in the AP Chinese 

Language and Culture class, and 9 students in the Chinese 

Heritage and Advanced Topics. 

 

Besides, Chinese program also offers summer camps for 

rising 5th-8th graders, and works with the Extended Day 

program for afterschool enrichment classes in the Lower 

School.

The curriculum in DA Chinese program is benchmarked 

with the ACTFL proficiency guidelines, inspired by PISA 

global competence assessment, and Learning for Justice 

Social Justice Standards.

In addition to the language components, calligraphy, 

Taiichi, and poetry are integrated into the curriculum in 

response to Durham Academy's mission statement - to live a 

moral, happy and productive life. 

To foster students’ language learning autonomy, a peer 

tutoring program “Chinese Lab” is scheduled every day that 

allows students at higher levels share their Chinese learning 

strategies and help Novice-level students practice writing and 

speaking. 

Since 2015, DA Chinese Program has been a servicelearning 

community partner with Chinese programs at Duke 

University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 

(UNC). High school students attend collaborative classes with 

college students every year on a variety of learning topics and 

activities. 

Since 2017, DA has established several global exchange 

and language exchange partnerships. Students exchange pen 

pal letters and greeting videos, or meet over Zoom 

synchronously to apply their language skills. 

Students also engage in various service-learning projects 

within the local community, such as organizing all-school 

Lunar New Year celebrations, crafting New Year cards for a 

Chinese senior center in Orange County, and hosting 

Mandarin Storytime at Kidzu Children's Museum.

Student Enrollment Trends (2009-2023) 

Between 2016 and 2020, DA students participated in the 

North Carolina statewide speech and writing contests. More 

than 15 students won prestigious awards (1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd 

places, Top 10 Finalists, Best Talent Show, Best School 

Award) in various language levels and age groups of those 

contests. 

Between 2017 and 2021, DA students studied and 

researched interdisciplinary topics and presented their 

projects in the Duke-UNC Learning through Languages 

High School Research Symposiums. Fifteen students won 

Best Overall Research Project, Honorable Mention of Best 

Use of Written and Oral Language (Advanced Level), and 

Superior Team Awards. 

Five DA students published essays in magazine “The 

Selection of American K-12 Outstanding Chinese Works” in 

2020 and 2023, edited by the Chinese Language Teachers 

Association (CLTA, US) K-12 Committee. 

Nine DA students published essays in magazine “Juhe 

Supplement” between 2016 and 2021, edited by the Chinese 

Language Program at the University of Iowa. 

On February 1st, 2022, ABC 11, a local television station 

affiliated to the ABC network, paid a visit to the DA Chinese 

Program and highlighted both the program itself and the 

Lunar New Year celebration taking place at DA. The news 

segment provided insight into the program's offerings and 

the festive Lunar New Year celebrations that were taking 

place at Durham Academy. 


Ms. Bonnie Chunmeng Wang, 王春夢 , is an Upper School Chinese teacher and 

Diversity, Equity and Engagement Curriculum Consultant. She was awarded 2019 

Teacher of the Year by Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC), 

and is currently serving on the board of several teachers’ associations. Ms. Wang 

holds a B.A. in Psychology from Portland State University, and an M.A. in Linguistics 

from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her pedagogical research 

focuses on proficiency-based language assessment.

Ms. Zhengjie Guo, 郭正洁 , is an experienced AP Chinese teacher with a B.A. from 

Tsinghua University and an M.A. from the University of Saint Joseph. With a 

background in educational technology, she effectively engages 21st-century learners 

in person and online. With over a decade of teaching experience, Ms. Guo is a valued 

member of the DA teaching community. She also serves as an instructor at both the 

University of Connecticut Early College Experience program and Johns Hopkins 

University, bringing her wealth of knowledge and expertise to the classroom. 

Mr. John Adams, 艾仁平 , a graduate of Wake Forest University with a Master's 

degree in teaching Chinese as a foreign language from Middlebury College, brings a 

wealth of experience to the classroom. He has taught Chinese language and social 

studies at Westchester Country Day School and Summit School and served as a 

missionary in Taiwan for two years. Currently, Adams collaborates with Upper 

School teachers to map curriculum and foster students' enthusiasm for learning 

Chinese language and culture.

Logansport Community School Corporation (LCSC) contains 9 

schools and 4,274 students. Logansport High School (LHS) 

has a rich history and tradition dating back to 1871. The 

Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association (IFLTA), in 

collaboration with the Indiana Language Roadmap, presented 

the 2020 IFLTA Multilingual Golden Ribbon for Exemplary 

World Language School District Award to Logansport 

Community School Corporation at 2020 IFLTA Fall Virtual 

Conference. 

QUICK FACTS 

The inception of the LHS Chinese program dates back to 

2012, catering to a student cohort spanning 9th to 12th Grade 

and encompassing a population of over 300 students. 

Commencing in 2016 in collaboration with Ball State 

University, the dual credit Chinese program has been 

established. Notably, students enrolled in Chinese IV are 

eligible to register for the 203/204 college course. 

LHS Chinese program students are from various ethnic 

groups. The district’s minority enrollment is 60%. Also, 57.5% 

of students are economically disadvantaged. 

The National Chinese Honor Society Logansport Chapter 

was established in 2019 with the annual new member 

induction ceremony and the Berry Award ceremony. 

The Global Ambassadors Club, founded in January 

2023, welcomes all bilingual students to join its ranks. Within 

this club, members will have the opportunity to engage in the 

Academic World Quest, an event presented by the Indiana 

Council on World Affairs.

Beyond their academic accomplishments, students 

participating in the LHS Chinese program also have the 

opportunity to partake in enriching multicultural field trips 

and events. The LCSC provides additional support for events 

like the International Fair in Indiana and the Wabash World 

Language Spelling Events, ensuring a well-rounded 

experience for the students. 

Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration – Students learned 

about the rituals, games, and traditional food to celebrate this 

historical festival in September. 

Lunar New Year Celebration – In 2023, the LHS Chinese 

Club orchestrates a community event at the McHale 

Performing Arts Center. 

The Multicultural Festival - Since 2022, the LHS Chinese 

Club has been collaborating with other clubs to host this 

annual event. 

The Pen Pal Program - Initiated in 2022, LHS students 

connected students from Taiwan through Google Meet. This 

program facilitates the exchange of postcards and gifts 

between teachers and students, fostering cultural exchange. 

The annual highlight for students in the Chinese Club 

and Chinese classes is the Chicago Chinatown Field Trip.

In April 2018, three (3) LHS Chinese program students 

earned the Second Place Prize at the Indiana Chinese 

Language and Culture Fair for competing in the Chinese 

Bridge Contest in Indiana. 

In March 2022, Chinese students earned the Talent 

Show Plaque and the Third Place Award at the Wabash Valley 

World Language Spelling Bee Competition. 

In the LHS Homecoming Parade of 2022, both 

candidates from the Chinese Club were voted among the top 

five, and for the first time, the Homecoming Queen was also 

from the Chinese Club! 

The pictures of Chinese IV students and Chinese Club 

students were published on the local newsletter Pharos- 

Tribune before and after the 2023 Multicultural Festival in 

Berry Bowl. 

LHS Chinese program was profiled by the Chinese Early 

Language and Immersion Network (CELIN), Asia Society in 

2021. 

Mrs. Yi-Chun LeFaure, 林怡 

君 , graduated from 

National Taipei University 

of Technology with a 

Bachelor's of Arts degree in 

Applied English. Later, she 

graduated from Indiana 

State University with a Master's degree in Teaching 

English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). 

She taught Mandarin Chinese at Indiana State 

University for 1 year, and then she has been 

teaching grade 9-12 students in Logansport High 

School since 2012. 

Ms. Chunmei Guan, 关春梅 , 

graduated from Jilin 

University with a Masters of 

Arts in Foreign Linguistics 

and Applied Linguistics. She 

joined Logansport High 

School in 2017 and started to 

teach dual credit Chinese classes in 2019. Ms. 

Guan was the sponsor of the Chinese Club, the 

Global Ambassadors Club and the National

North Springs is one of 17 high schools in the Fulton County 

School System. Built in 1963, it is one of the oldest schools 

in the system with a long tradition of excellence and 

innovation. It is both a comprehensive high school and the 

only dual magnet high school in Georgia, with two 

specialized magnet programs in math/sciences and visual/ 

performing arts. 

QUICK FACTS 

The Chinese program was established in 2011, after 

Mayor Eva Galambos of Sandy Springs established a sister 

city relationship with Taicang city in Jiangsu Province, 

China. 

During the 2022-23 school year, the Chinese Program 

offers a comprehensive curriculum, including Chinese I, a 

combined class of Chinese II and Chinese II Honors, and 

another combined class comprising Chinese III, Chinese III 

Honors, Chinese IV Honors, and Chinese V Honors each 

worth 1.0 credit. 

More than 80% students in the program are African 

Americans. Notably, there were no Chinese heritage 

language learners in the program.

Throughout the past 10 years that Ms. Weng has been 

teaching at North Springs High School, there were many 

unforgettable moments. 

In April 2015, nine students and two teachers 

participated in the exchange trip to their sister school Mingde 

High School in Taicang city, Jiangsu Province, China. In 

October, North Springs High School students had the 

pleasure of hosting 11 students from Mingde High School. 

Between 2016 and 2023, many students enthusiastically 

participated in the cherished annual school-wide 

Multicultural Night, showcasing various performances such 

as the Xiao Pin Guo dance, fan dance, singing, and lion 

dance, etc. 

In the recent 10 years, students embarked on exciting 

field trips to explore Chinatown mall, savor authentic Chinese 

cuisine at local restaurants, celebrated Chinese New Year, 

and experienced cultural exhibitions. Additionally, they had 

the unique opportunity to don period costumes and learn the 

art of lion dance at the Taiwanese Culture Center. 


Many students were inspired to love the Chinese Language 

and Culture. Some of the outstanding students achieved 

remarkable results, specifically 

Between 2014 and 2023 – nine (9) students participated 

in StarTalk Chinese summer camp in Furman University, 

Agnes Scott University, University of North Georgia and Troy 

University. 

In 2017, one (1) student had the honor of representing 

high schools in the Southeast United States at the “Chinese 

Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition held in Richardson 

TX. 

In 2015 and in 2016, two (2) students participated in the 

first and second Jiangsu Cup Chinese Speech Contest, 

securing first and second place in the Level 4 category, 

respectively. The first-place winner was rewarded with an allexpenses-paid 

trip to Jiangsu, China.

Between 2014 to 2016, four (4) students were awarded scholarships from the National Security 

Language Initiatives for the Youth (NSLI-Y) program to study in China. Three (3) of them received 

summer scholarships, while one (1) student earned the scholarship for an entire year of study in China in 

2015. 

Between 2014 and 2019, three (3) students won first, second, and third place in the Chinese 

Culture Talent Competition organized by George Chinese Language Educators (GCLE). Additionally, five 

students received multiple awards in Chinese Cultural Knowledge Competitions, also organized by GCLE, 

during the same period. 


Ms. Jiaxing Weng, 翁佳行 , is the Chinese Teacher at North Springs Charter 

High School. Driven by her fervent commitment to fostering cross-cultural 

understanding, she dedicates herself to teaching and promoting the Chinese 

language, martial arts, and culture. With an illustrious contribution to 

education, she currently serves as the president of the association of Georgia 

Chinese Language Educators (GCLE) and a certified Tai Chi instructor.

怎样才能最快最有效的吸引学生的注意力和兴趣呢 ? 民以食为天 , 那就从吃开始吧 ! 西雅图 

的冬天正是吃火锅的好季节。于影老师在 West Seattle 

High School 组织的春节庆祝周中 , 学生们想到了组织一 

次吃火锅活动。高中生们说干就干 , 先在网上查找出来吃 

火锅常用配料和食材 , 然后每节课的课代表组织每个学 

生带一样菜或者肉类 , 并用中文标注出来。最后于影老 

师负责购买贵的和那些在一般美国超市里买不到的食材 , 

像肥牛 , 羊肉卷 , 鱼丸和火锅底料等。第二天 , 每节课 

的学生都拿来了一样食材 , 并用中文注明。学生们先摆 

好火锅 , 放上底料和汤底 , 然后由不同的学生操作开始 

边涮边吃。火锅是由去年卖糕点的钱买的。牌子和款式

时候在家里挂上红色的灯笼 , 营造浪漫喜庆的氛 

围 , 而这道年夜菜则表达了家人能够团聚 , 生活充 

满喜乐的美好愿景 ! 学生们将茄子对半切开 , 然后 

用筷子固定住茄子 , 切片时不切断 , 接着将调制好 

的肉泥加在茄片的中间 , 在每两片茄子中间都夹上 

肉。用黄瓜和胡萝卜放在做好的茄子中间作为装 

饰。蒸好后就做成了美味、好看、寓意吉祥的春节

The Chinese program hosts various cultural activities, 

World Language Club events, and various competitions. 

SHA is a school chapter of the National Chinese Honor 

Society (NCHS). 

During the Chinese New Year, the school organizes 

large-scale Chinese food cooking activities to celebrate and 

share the cultural traditions of the Chinese New Year. 

To inspire students to continue learning Chinese, 

activities such as flying kites, paper cutting, maple leaf 

creations, singing, calligraphy, and other endeavors are 

encouraged. 


Students work hard in Sacred Heart Academy. Many of them 

continue learning Chinese in college. Below is short list of 

their accomplishments. 

Projects created by two students were selected for the 

National Student Art Exhibition organized by the American 

Academy of International Culture and Education. 

About 75% of the students who graduate from SHA continue to study Chinese in college. 

Five students were inducted into The National Chinese Honor Society (NCHS) in 2022. 

One student received the 2023 Ai Ling Guan Chinese Education Scholarship.

Sidwell Friends School (SFS) is a PK–12, co-educational 

Quaker day school founded in 1883 by Thomas W. Sidwell.

inner light. The school has 1142 students enrolled in its 

Lower School campus in Bethesda, Maryland and its 

Middle and Upper School campus in Washington, DC.

The SFS Chinese Studies Program was founded in 

1983 in honor of John Fisher Zeidman ’79, followed by a 

visit by Premier Zhao Ziyang in 1984 that initiated student 

exchange programs with China. 

 

The Chinese language is introduced in 4th grade as 

part of social studies. In 5th grade, students begin the 

sequential language program, which concludes in Upper 

School with Chinese Seminar (Post-AP). 

 

Besides language courses, the program also includes 

Chinese history and culture curricula, as well as an alumni 

fellowship program, a student exchange program, student 

travel to China, and an annual lecture series.

The Sidwell Friends School (SFS) Chinese Studies 

program has a long history of collaborating with different 

organizations in China and the US to promote crosscultural 

communication and mutual understanding. Since 

the program’s founding in 1983, SFS has had various 

activities for the community. To list a few: 

Annual Zeidman Lecture on US-China relations 

dating back to 1983. For a list of past Zeidman Lecture

In January 1984, Premier Zhao Ziyang visited 

Sidwell Friends for the inaugural year of the Chinese 

Studies Program. Sidwell Friends then visited Beijing in 

June at Zhao's invitation. 

Established Sisterschool program with No. 2 High 

School Affliliated with Beijing Normal Unversity in 1985, 

Fudan Fuzhong in 1990, and Shijia Hutong Elementary 

School in 2012. 

In June 2022, Ambassador Qin Gang met with SFS 

students who were building the China Folk House Retreat 

during his visit to the China Folk House in West Virginia. 

In September 2022, the Chinese Embassy hosted 

Sidwell Friends School families by special invitation for a 

Mid-Autumn Moon Festival celebration. 


Throughout the years, SFS Students have been very committed to learning Chinese language and culture. 

They actively participated in cross-cultural activities, attended study abroad Chinese programs (both internal 

and external programs), and showcased their language proficiency in speaking and writing competitions. 

Students have won numerous awards in the Chinese bridge competition since 2007, and were twice 

selected (2012, 2015) to represent the USA in the World Chinese Bridge Competition. 

Studens have published on CLTA’s K-12 Outstanding Chinese works (2021, 2022) and the University 

of Iowa’s Juhe Supplment Journal (2022)

Student community engagement includes working on building the China Folk House Retreat cultural 

exchange center, performances at community events, and peer tutoring Chinese language students. 


Dr. John Flower, 华有道 (B.A. Haverford College, Ph.D. University of Virginia), is Director of 

Chinese Studies at Sidwell Friends since 2007, former Associate Professor of Modern Chinese 

History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Fellow at the UVA East Asia 

Center. He is founder of the China Folk House center for experiential learning and cultural 

exchange. 

Yuan Angel, 郑媛 (B.A. and M.A. Northeast Normal University), initiated Sidwell Friends 5/6 

Chinese program in 2014 after relocating from Beijing where she taught Chinese Language Arts 

at the High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University for 10 years. She won 2nd place at 

the National Chinese Teaching Competition in China and presented at Beijing Hanban 

Headquarters. 

Fei Reed, 熊非 (B.A. Central China Normal Univerisity, M.A. Middlebury), designed and built 

the 7/8 Chinese program, and successfully advocated to expand the program into lower grades 

at Sidwell. She initiated, and led the Sidwell Minimester China trip for more than a decade. 

She has presented at ACTFL, NCLC and CLTA-VA (a former CLTA-VA vice president). 

Qihui Tang, 汤奇慧 (B.A. Central China Normal Univeristy, M.A.TFL. Middlebury Institute of 

Interntional Studies at Monterey), has been teaching at Sidwell Friends since 2008. She 

worked with colleagues to redesign the high school curriculum from Chinese I to Chinese 

Seminar (Post-AP). She has presented at regional and national conferences (ACTFL, CLTA, and 

CLTA-VA). 

Xuan Wang, 王璇 (B.A. East China Normal University, M.A. New York University, M.L.A. St. 

John’s College), has been teaching at Sidwell Friends School for 11 years. She actively 

participates in and presents at regional and national conferences (such as ACTFL, NCLC and 

CLTA). She currently serves on the CLTA-VA board and helps organize professional 

development workshops for teachers. 

Edith Zhang, 方寄云 (B.A. Middlebury College, M.A. Johns Hopkins University), is a 4th grade 

homeroom teacher with 16 years of teaching experience at Sidwell Friends. She developed the 

4th grade’s innovative multi-disciplinary curriculum centered around China.

Tarwater Elementary School 


The Chandler Unified School District is the third largest 

district in Arizona, with over 45,000 students. Tarwater 

Elementary School is the only school in the district with a 

Mandarin Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program. After 

graduating from the elementary, students continue to learn 

Mandarin in junior high and high school. Feeder secondary 

schools offer advanced Mandarin Chinese courses for 

immersion students entering their campus. 

QUICK FACTS 

Tarwater DLI started in 2014. It serves over 350 

students from Pre-K to 6th Grade. Each grade level offers two 

Mandarin DLI classes. 

The DLI Program follows a 50/50 model. Students 

typically achieve intermediate low-mid proficiency by the 

time they graduate from 6th Grade, based on the Avant 

proficiency assessment. 

Tarwater DLI students are from various ethnic groups. 

In the year of 2022-2023, Tarwater DLI program serves the 

following ethnic groups: White 47%, Hispanic 23%, Asian 

11%, black 5%, multi-ethnic 12% and Pacific Islander 1%. Over 

60% of the DLI students are open enrollment. 

Starting next school year 2023-24, Tarwater plans to 

introduce a Foreign Language Exposure (FLEX) program to 

non-DLI classes, expanding Mandarin learning to over 800 

students.

The goals of Tarwater Elementary School DLI Program 

include bilingualism, bi-literacy, cultural awareness, and 

global citizenship. Students attain high levels of proficiency in 

both English and Mandarin Chinese, while learning gradelevel 

academic content. 

 

Lunar New Year Celebration – Tarwater hosts one of the 

largest community events in the East valley of metro Phoenix. 

Over 1200 attendees enjoyed the performances, cultural 

activities and food trucks in February of 2023. 

Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration – Students learned 

about the rituals, games, and traditional food to celebrate this 

historical festival in September of 2022. 

 

Tarwater Elementary School has been invited to join 

Phoenix Chinese Week for many years, a community event 

that attracts over 40,000 people. 

 

Tarwater DLI Program was invited to give presentation 

to the district school board members in 2021. School board 

members were impressed to see the outcome from a decision 

they made seven years ago. 

 

Tarwater Elementary School is very active in Community 

outreach activities to promote and showcase language 

learning and culture in various settings such as City of 

Chandler LNY Gala, Arizona State University Open Day and 

Chinese Language Teacher Association of Arizona (CLTA-AZ) 

Speech Contest.

Tarwater DLI students have received many different achievements throughout the years. 

In September 2021, Tarwater Elementary School had the unique opportunity to interview NASA 

astronauts from the International Space Station via live radio contact. Only 10 schools worldwide 

were selected for this special event. Additionally, in May 2022, Senator Mark Kelley visited the school 

to host a second contact session after hearing about Tarwater's strong interest in space. 

Tarwater DLI Graduate was selected as the Student of the Year in the district in 2021. 

Fourteen Tarwater students received awards from the 1 st CLTA-AZ Speech Contest in 2023. 

Tarwater Elementary DLI program received the highest amount of STEM grant from the Salt River 

Project in 2020. 

INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHY (THE WHOLE DLI TEAM AT TARWATER) 

Mrs. Xiaomin Liu, 刘晓敏 , earned 

her master's degree in 

Curriculum and Instruction from 

the University of Wisconsin- 

Madison in 2012. She joined the 

Tarwater community in the 

summer of 2021. Prior to that, she taught at a 

mandarin immersion school in Saint Paul, MN for 8 

years, from 2013 to 2021. Mrs. Liu loves Pre-K 

students. She works with Ms. Proffitt to develop Pre 

K curriculum. She likes to engage her students with 

songs, TPR movements and storytime. 

Ms. Hannah Proffitt earned her 

Master of Education Curriculum 

& Instruction from National Louis 

University in Chicago in 2018. 

She joined Tarwater in 2021 and 

has taught Pre K since then. She 

started her teaching career as a 2nd grade teacher at 

a charter public school in St. before going overseas. 

She taught kindergarten through 3rd grade at a 

bilingual school in Ningbo China from August 2015- 

June 2020.Ms. Proffitt loves to engage students 

through play time. 

Mr. Jim Chiang, 江俊义 , earned 

his Master of Education in 

Administration from University 

of Phoenix in 2017. He also 

received Master of Education in 

International Teaching from 

Framingham State University in 2010. He has been 

a teacher since 2005. In 2013, he began his journey 

in the Mandarin Immersion field in the US. He 

taught Mandarin immersion in North Carolina for 

four years before moving to Arizona.Mr. Chiang has 

taught DLI Kindergarten at Tarwater since 2017. He 

is good at interacting with students. There is lots of 

fun to be in his class. 

Mrs. Anne Jones received her 

Masters in Curriculum and 

Instruction from Northern 

Arizona University. She has been 

teaching for twenty plus years in 

the Chandler School district. She 

has taught 1st grade at San Marcos Elementary, and 

Kindergarten at Jacobson, and Tarwater. Mrs. Jones 

has been the DLI Kindergarten English teacher since 

2014. She really enjoys getting students off to a great 

start in school. She also has a strong passion for 

teaching children how to read.

Mrs. Shuojin Ma, 马烁瑾 ,

University with a Bachelor's of

DLI Program in 2019. She has taught 1 st Grade DLI 

classes since then. Prior to that, she taught at a 

public charter school named Basis Charter School. 

Mrs. Ma engages her students through hands on 

activities. 

Ms. Hong Zhou, 周红 , has a 

Master's Degree in Elementary 

Education from Grand Canyon 

University. This would be her 

16th year of teaching and her 6th 

year in the Tarwater DLI 

program. She was a specials teacher at Knox Gifted 

Academy before Tarwater. She loves being a teacher 

in the Toro Family and enjoys helping students 

build solid fundations. 

Mrs. Ying Shao, 邵英 , earned her 

Master Degree in Curriculum and 

Teaching in Arizona. She has 

teaching certificates in the 

following areas: Special 

Education, Secondary Education 

with approved area in Chinese, Elementary 

Education, Library Media Specialist Endorsement, 

Math Endorsement, Early Childhood Endorsement, 

and Computer Science Endorsement. Teaching DLI 

students through comprehensive input is her 

favorite. 

Mrs. Hongyu Yang, 杨宏宇 , has 

been teaching Mandarin 

immersion for almost 10 years. 

She earned her EDU Master 

Degree from Northern Arizona 

University in 2021. Mrs. Yang 

likes to engage students through interactive games. 

She earned the Teacher of the Year from Arizona 

Langauge Associationv (AZLA) in 2021-2022. 

Mrs. Rachel Glassman graduated 

from Arizona State University 

with a Masters of Education in 

Elementary Education. She spent 

three years teaching first grade in 

Chandler and spent one year 

teaching first grade in Oregon. This would be her 

eighth year teaching first grade and her fourth year 

in the Mandarin DLI program. Mrs. Glassman has a 

strong passion in teaching 1 st Graders how to read 

and write. 

Mrs. Michelle Purtiman was born 

and raised in Tempe, AZ. She 

attended Arizona State University 

and graduated in May 2000 with 

a degree in Elementary 

Education. She has taught first 

grade in Gilbert, AZ and in Alameda, CA. She has 

been part of the Toro family since 2013. Mrs. 

Purtiman helps students build reading and writing 

proficiency through various projects. 

Ms. Nikole Bohn graduated from 

a small liberal arts school, Carroll 

University, in Wisconsin with a 

Bachelors of Science degree in 

Elementary Education in 

2011. She also graduated with 

endorsements in Early Childhood and Adaptive 

Education. Right after graduation, she moved to 

Arizona to start her teaching career. In 2013, she 

joined the Tarwater family and hasn’t looked back! 

She taught DLI 3 rd Grade for 6 years. 

Mrs. Susan Hall earned her 

Masters of Education in 

Curriculum and Instruction from 

Northern Arizona University in 

2004. All of her years of teaching 

has been at Tarwater Elementary, 

and she feels blessed for that. She has taught first, 

second and third grade prior to fourth Grade. Mrs. 

Hall has taught fourth Grade DLI classes for five 

years. She likes to engage students through reading.

Mr. Linyong Yao, 姚林勇 , 

received his MA in 2016 from 

Elon University in Elementary 

Education. He was also certified 

to teach Chinese as a second 

language for K-12. He has been

experiments. 

Ms. Yi Liang, 梁毅 , graduated 

with a master's degree in 

Education from California State 

University, Fresno. She joined 

Tarwater in 2020. Prior to 

Tarwater, she taught at a Mandarin Immersion 

Program in a public elementary school for four 

years. During those years, she taught kindergarten 

and actively involved in school events, contributing 

her experience and knowledge by teaching 

Mandarin and sharing Chinese culture with the 

learning community. 

Ms. Jennifer Johnston received her 

MA from the Arizona State 

University in Bilingual Education. 

She has taught everything from 

Pre-K to adults but most of her 

time has been spent in second and 

third grade. She has been working with students 

acquiring a new language for 10 years. 

Ms. Tonya McMillan received a 

Masters in Education with an 

emphasis in Cross-cultural 

Teaching. She started her teaching 

career in Los Angeles, California at 

Saticoy Elementary School in 1999. 

At Saticoy, she taught 3rd and 5th grade. In 2007, she 

started teaching at Tarwater Elementary School. She 

feels so blessed to be a part of the Tarwater family. 

She has been teaching 6 th Grade DLI classes for 3 

years. 

Ms. Diane Hale is passionate 

about empowering teachers and 

making a positive impact on 

student learning. During her 

tenure as Assistant Director of 

Gifted Education and DLI at 

Chandler Unified School District (CUSD), she 

dedicated herself to developing and implementing 

innovative programs. Now, she brings her wealth of 

experience to Tarwater, where she is thrilled to be 

part of a community where her dreams have come 

true. 

Mrs. Wenjing Xie, 谢雯静 , (DLI 

Program Coach) joined Tarwater 

in 2019. Before that, she was the 

K-12 Outreach Curriculum 

Specialist at Arizona State 

University, conducting 

professional developments for teachers and designing 

curriculum for K-12 Programs. At Tarwater, she 

worked with the team to build articulation and 

developed schoolwide DLI assessment system to 

monitor student progress. She oversees all the DLI 

events. She also helped the program receive various 

grants and nationwide recognitions.

WFS offers a Chinese program as a second language for

At Wilmington Friends School, the Chinese program provides 

diverse cultural activities and local & international field 

trips. Chinese class students also participate in local 

community-based service learning. 

Every three years, the students in the Chinese class have 

a unique opportunity to travel to China. Over the years, our 

Chinese class students explored five cities in China during the 

years 2012, 2014, and 2017. In 2023, the originally planned 

trip to China was impacted by the Covid situation, leading 

them to visit Japan for a 9-day cultural experience instead.

year. Students have participated in the Delaware Art Museum 

for the Chinese New Year celebration for the past 10 years. 

WFS Chinese program invites guest speakers to Chinese 

classes every year. 

Chinese class students celebrate Chinese New Year every 

year. Teachers and students practiced Dragon Dance and 

played Chinese Yoyo and distributed red envelopes to students 

according to the tradition. 


Enrolled students in the Chinese program actively engage in 

various competitions, where they apply their language skills 

and deeply immerse themselves in Chinese culture. Moreover, 

they establish meaningful connections with both local and 

global Chinese-speaking communities. 

One student, from the WFS Chinese Program, won the 

second place in the 10th and 11th “Chinese Bridge 汉语桥 ” 

proficiency competitions for foreign secondary and high school 

students in Washington D.C. 

Five of our Chinese class students took part in the 2017 

Penn-STARTALK Capstone Project Showcase, hosted by the 

University of Pennsylvania. Our performance, titled 'Silk Road 

Journey with Marco Polo,' received the Best Middle School 

Project award.

Ms. Jianglin Shi, 施江琳 , has 

been teaching Mandarin at 

Wilmington Friends School 

since 2014. She received her 

bachelor’s degree in 

Integrated Studies 

(Education and Mathematics) at Delaware State 

University and a music education degree from 

China. Ms. Shi is serving as a board director in 

CLTA-Taoli starting from 2022. She also 

presented at the 8th International Conference on 

Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at 

Swarthmore College in June 2023. 

Ms. Xuedan Yang, 杨雪丹 , has 

been teaching Upper School 

Mandarin Chinese and IB levels 

at Wilmington Friends School 

since 2017. She graduated from 

Temple University with a 

Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education 

and earned her Master’s Degree in Multicultural 

Education from Eastern University. Ms. Yang has 

been a member of CLTA-Taoli since 2020 and 

consistently participated in IBDP, TPRS, and CI 

workshops nationwide.

New Book: A Student Grammar of Chinese

A new book A Student Grammar of Chinese which is specially designed for 

students and language instructor will be published by Cambridge University 

Press in May 2023. Written for beginning learners of the language, this concise 

introduction to Chinese grammar assumes only a basic knowledge of Chinese, 

and no knowledge of grammatical terminology and practices. Comparing 

Chinese grammar patterns and rules with those of English, and illustrated with a 

wealth of real-life examples, it allows learners to understand the similarities and 

differences between the two languages. Using engaging and accessible 

language, it examines the Chinese sound system, writing system, word 

formation rules, parts of speech, and simple and complex sentences, as well as 

explaining special constructions that are typically challenging to second 

language learners. Each chapter begins with clear learning goals and ends with 

a useful summary highlighting the chapter’s main points. To call attention to 

specific issues, sidebars are interspersed throughout the text, and exercises 

within the book and online answer keys help students to reinforce learned
