Love stories and murders and revenge! And a great wine.
Every great love story deserves a great ending. And how, exactly, will Amy Neff’s debut
novel, The Days I Loved You Most, play out? It’s the story of a couple who’ve known and
loved each other for more than sixty years, who gather their three children to tell them of
their plans. One has a severe case of rapidly worsening Parkinson’s, and the other won’t
live without her. They are, they tell the children, in a year’s time going to end their lives
together on their own terms ... this final year is for the family to make new memories. A
keep-the-tissues-handy love story. Bloomsbury Publishing • The school run can be murder.
Things aren’t going well for Beth. Her husband left her. The other school mums judge
her for swearing. Now she’s stuck in A&E on the first day of school. Plus ... her best friend
Charlotte - the only person to ever run an interesting PTA meeting, was hit by a car when
out jogging and died. But was that really an accident? Beth thinks perhaps not ... and with
a newfound purpose and a glass of wine in hand, she sets out to discover what really
happened to Charlotte. Once she’s put the kids to bed, obvs. The Dead Friend Project by
Joanna Wallace ... a dark, funny murder mystery! Viper • A modern day fairytale. Jenny is not
looking forward to her Class of 2007 reunion. Everyone’s done brilliantly ... except her. It’s
as if she didn’t get the memo. As it turns out, she didn’t. But now back at the university for
the dreaded union, she’s given the memo she missed the first time around, and a second
chance. One to rewrite her past and fix her life. But at what price? The Memo by Lauren
If you’ve read Sarah Pearse’s The
suspense. A woman escapes her dark
detective, visiting the park at the same
the park’s wild beauty turns sinister. “A
opportunity to be the first to witness the unveiling
far based on the direction the country and motor
and we hope for it to succeed the previous shape
hence the high-spirited sense of atmosphere
created.” The launch saw young influencers explore
of industries, including automotive, printing, marketing, insurance,
advertising, journalism, life coaching, NPOs, and a dynamic new
it creates a platform to share experiences, learn from each other, and
most importantly, build a support group. The event was successful in
Jumping for joy
Driven by a strong desire to succeed and help improve the lives of others, fitness
enthusiast Ilse Engelbrecht’s business is growing in leaps and bounds.
Ilse Engelbrecht (39), with a metabolic age of 19, is originally
from Worcester in the Western Cape and currently lives
in Boksburg.
She’s been with her husband for 12 years and they tied the
knot two and a half years ago in the Maldives.
Ilse loves coffee shops, highlighting it as her favourite
hangout. ‘I love a delicious cappuccino and a slice of cake,’
she said.
Growing up, Ilse was always active and enjoyed sports. She
played netball until she had an ankle injury which prohibited
her from continuing to play any sport or pursue a
career as a netball player.
Jump to it
Ilse is a fitness enthusiast and the founder of Jump Aholics
SA, a successful business designed around rebounding.
Rebounding is a type of aerobic exercise that is performed
while jumping on a mini trampoline or rebounder.
It offers an incredible health boost for your whole system,
supporting the body’s natural detox processes. It boosts
circulation and reduces cellulite. It also sculpts a strong
core and tones muscles.
Rebounding can help work the muscles in the legs. It
increases your endurance, and strengthens your bones,
among several other benefits.
‘This type of exercise is gaining popularity because it
is gentle on the joints while allowing you to work your
cardiovascular system without depleting the body,’ Ilse
explained.
With a background in fitness, Ilse holds a qualification in
personal training and is a qualified rebounding instructor.
She has also done a nutrition course. Additionally, this
fitness enthusiast worked on international cruise ships as a
fitness director.
‘I’ve always been in the fitness industry and continue
to love every moment of it. I won the first prize for the
Summer Bodies fitness competition and obtained this by
preparing with the best nutrition in the world,’ highlighted
Ilse.
Ilse started her business just after the Covid pandemic.
‘During lockdown, I gained a lot of weight and after the
pandemic, I decided to get myself a rebounder to lose
weight and get back in shape.’
When Ilse lost the weight, she received many inquiries
from people asking about how she lost weight. Along with
her husband, Ilse made the decision to transform their
backyard into a Jump Aholics studio and invited people;
and that’s how the first studio started.
‘Three years later, Jump Aholics SA has 33 studios in South
Africa and one international studio set to launch in 2025,’
she added.
Aiming for the best
The main reason she pursued the path of establishing
Jump Aholics is to inspire and help women.
Ilse is driven by the feedback she receives from the many
women who see positive results from rebounding. She
highlighted that she feels amazing when she receives calls
from clients telling her how much weight they’ve lost and
how much better they feel because rebounding is not only
for weight loss; it helps with your mind, it keeps the body
clean and it helps with endorphins.
‘Hurting my ankle years ago stopped me from playing any
sport but I am grateful to have found rebounding because
it is such a low-impact exercise. It is the only sport I can do.
If it was not for rebounding, I would have probably been a
couch potato,’ shared Ilse.
Having started rebounding as a certified instructor in 2021,
Ilse specialises in assisting people to achieve their health
and fitness goals. ‘I can honestly say that since doing
rebounding, I am in the best shape of my life. My goal is to
help people to jump into the best version of themselves.’
Everyone has the chance to be their own boss because
each Jump Aholics SA rebounding studio is privately
owned.
‘We try to honour the Lord in everything we do and base
our operations on biblical values,’ said the successful businesswoman.
Jump Aholics SA hopes to make an impact in people’s
lives all over SA by allowing anyone to open a studio in
their area. Their mission is to change lives by helping
people to not only get fit and healthy but to also improve
their self-image.
Bouncing off challenges
One of the biggest challenges Ilse faces is competition,
but she continues to bring 100% to her business ensuring
it succeeds and yields the desired result such as positive
feedback from the clients.
‘It’s a lot of hard work and early hours but it’s all worth it.
To emphasize, every studio is built on biblical principles,
we speak blessings and believe that we will succeed.’
She added: ‘I am blessed to have an amazing support
system; my husband and the ladies on the Jump Aholics
team have always been by my side.’
Summer body tips with Ilse
Ilse advises that to get the perfect summer body it all
starts with your mindset.
‘You need to tell yourself that you can do this, you need
to be consistent and what you put in your mouth is very
important.’
It’s common for people to exercise but not lose any
weight and Ilse shares that to see desired results it is 80%
nutrition and 20% exercise.
Ilse additionally advises that cardio is an important part
of how she stays fit but strength training should be included.
‘Maintaining a balanced diet and weight can
start with meal plans. At Jump Aholics we offer
meal plans because we train so much, we are
always hungry and it becomes easy to grab
takeaways but having a healthy meal plan
is essential,’ said the fitness guru.
She advises to not skip a meal
and ensure you include
enough protein in
your meals.
Céline Mainguy, a successful entrepreneur,
a wife and fur mom shares
her story - from studying drama to
venturing into business.
Lingerie specialist, Céline grew up in
Alberton and after completing high
school, she went on to study drama
where she obtained her diploma in
drama at the old Pretoria Technikon,
now known as Tshwane University of
Technology (TUT). After her studies,
she relocated overseas to the UK and
lived there for 12 years.
Céline is also an agent for one of her
suppliers for Southern Africa. She
travels to countries such as Namibia,
Botswana and Lesotho training ladies
on how to fit bras on clients. ‘I train ladies
on how to fit clients by assessing
their body and breast shape and not
using a tape measure,’ she said.
Stepping into business
When Céline returned to South Africa
after 12 years of living aboard, she
began conceptualising the idea of
Bravacious. Inspired by her struggles
and always being fitted in the wrong
size bra, she founded Bravacious and
on May 1, 2012 she opened her doors
to her first clients.
Bravacious is a business that specialises
and is passionate about assisting
women with finding correctly fitted
bras in gorgeous styles yet never
compromising on quality.
Céline never felt comfortable in her
GIS0906_014_1536434540.indd 14 2024/08/15 10:45:32
own clothes and her own skin. She highlighted: ‘When I went overseas and got
fitted in the right size bra, it changed my life. It boosted my confidence.’ For
Céline, even as a teenager, it was always a thought in her mind; ‘surely there
must be prettier bras out there, for the bigger busted lady’.
From drama to business
Céline does not regret studying drama. ‘I always say that studying is never a
waste even if you don’t go into that field.’
It has been a journey for this ambitious entrepreneur. The reason she went
to the UK was to pursue a career in drama and although she never used her
qualifications or skill, she’s had amazing opportunities from learning new skills
to meeting different people from all walks of life. ‘I slowly transitioned into corporate
and I’ve had amazing mentors. I might not have used drama but I had
opportunities to learn how to run a business and to later become an employer,’
said Céline.
Her last boss was an incredible inspiration to her. ‘She inspired me to not be a
boss but a leader,’ emphasized Céline.
The lingerie specialist loves that her business can help women find their confidence
again. ‘Women often come into fittings feeling down about their bodies
or they dislike their breasts because they don’t feel good in their clothing. There
is always laughter that happens in the fitting room when they get fitted in the
right bra highlighting how good they feel and start to realise that there is nothing
wrong with their body shapes.’
Céline delights in seeing women not having to settle for granny bras or ugly
lingerie. Regardless of their shape or size they can rock really beautiful underwear
and feel fabulous in their clothes while regaining their confidence. ‘I think
the biggest fulfilment and probably the most important thing for me is helping
ladies see whatever their body or breast shape, they are still beautiful and can
feel good about themselves.’
As a woman in business, Céline is grateful for her support structure which
includes her husband, family, her mom, close friends and her employee who
joined five months ago. ‘I also have a very close relationship with God and
that helps me. Being an entrepreneur is amazing and it has a lot of perks but
there are times when you have to dig deep, but because I know that this was
a purpose from God, when those tough moments come or quiet seasons, I
am motivated by the fact that I am walking in my God-given purpose and
that I am making a difference and making a positive impact on women,’ she
highlighted.
Surmounting difficulties
Bravacious stocks over 110 sizes and when there are that many sizes on offer,
the biggest challenge is stock. ‘When you have a white bra in stock, the ladies
want a black bra and when you have a black bra, they want a navy bra - this is
the same with swimwear,’ shared Céline.
The business caters to a range of lingerie needs such as everyday bras, swimwear,
sport and nursing bras. The first challenge faced is not having enough
variety in all the sizes and the second challenge is pricing. ‘Our products are imported
and if you include all the charges, by the time the product lands, it’s already
quite an expensive product. I often explain to my clients that I am aware
that the bras aren’t cheap but I know that they are going to fit you properly and
I also know that they are of high quality. We need to change the way we see
our lingerie - its an investment into something we wear every single day.’
According to the lingerie specialist, buying lingerie that is of inferior quality and
that’s not the right size is actually money being wasted. She added: ‘You don’t
need 20 bras in your wardrobe, you just need a few good bras which are the
correct fit to start with and over time, slowly add to that collection.’
The right fit for spring and its importance
Fashion comes and goes and unfortunately the ‘right fit’ is not a one-word
answer. However, according to Alberton’s lingerie specialist; investing in a nude
bra is a great tip for the ladies.
The importance
of choosing
the right bra
starts with
‘fit’
‘A nude bra will always work better
under white depending on one’s skin
tone,’ she added. Nude works best
with lighter skin tones and a chestnut
or black colour bra works well with
darker skin tones.
‘A good T-shirt bra is another great tip
and must-have this spring. The T-shirt
bra works great under lighter colours
if you’re looking for a smooth look
but don’t fall into the trap of being
boring - there are beautiful bras you
can wear under everyday clothing,’
shared Céline.
The importance of choosing the right
bra starts with ‘fit’. ‘Ladies often make
the mistake of choosing bras that are
too big in the back and too small in
the cup and they should almost go
the complete opposite. Go smaller in
the back and bigger in the cup,’ she
advised.
Additionally, Céline emphasizes the
importance of fitting bras before
purchasing.
‘Another useful tip is when you go
bra shopping and the sales assistant
walks in with a tape measure, I’d
suggest turning around and walking
out because that is not best practice
for bra assessing - it can be a starting
point but it is not useful in determining
the perfect fit.”
Céline encourages women to embrace
their bodies and breast shape.
There is a bra out there for every lady
and you don’t have to settle for ugly,
nasty bras.
‘My ultimate goal? To hopefully save
all the boobies of the world,’ she said
laughing.
Hospitality opens doors
Busisiwe Kumalo lives and breathes hospitality.
The 31-year-old mother to a ‘handsome
six-year-old boy’ was born and
bred in Bloemfontein, Free State, but
now resides in Benoni in Gauteng.
A lecturer at The IIE School of Hospitality
& Service Management’s (IIE
HSM) Rosebank campus, Khumalo
has a national diploma, Baccalaureus
Technologiae degree, postgraduate
certificate in education and a postgraduate
diploma in hospitality management
from the Central University
of Technology, Free State.
We asked her to tell us how she got
to her current position and posed a
few hospitality-related questions.
Tell us about your journey from
leaving school to your current
position:
After I completed my national diploma,
I worked as a trainee in Hippo
Hollow which is situated in Hazyview,
Mpumalanga. I completed my management
trainee programme at the
Sandton Sun Hotel, and after finishing
my Baccalaureus Technologiae degree,
I was moved to the front desk.
A few years later I was promoted to
a banqueting co-ordinator. But then
Covid-19 happened, and I decided to
go back to studying. I did a postgraduate
certificate in education and a
postgraduate diploma in hospitality
management at the Central University
of Technology in the Free State.
In 2022, I got a job offer to work in
Aspen, Colorado in the United States
and returned to South Africa seven
months later.
What content is covered in your
course and what advice do you give
students?
Hospitality management covers a
wide range of topics essential for
running businesses in the hospitality
industry, including hotels, restaurants,
resorts, event planning and tourism.
I constantly advise my students to
always have a positive attitude, as
this will take them far in life and in
business.
GIS0906_018_1518742165.indd 18 2024/08/15 10:47:55
What advice do you have for anyone wanting a career in the hospitality
industry?
Be flexible and adaptable. The hospitality sector is renowned for its erratic and
fast-paced environment. Be ready to adjust to shifting conditions, deal with unforeseen
difficulties, and perform well under pressure. Adaptability and flexibility
are two qualities that businesses look for in hospitality workers.
What makes for good service?
Good service in the hospitality industry is characterised by several key elements
that contribute to a positive guest experience. Receiving a warm welcome,
attentiveness and efficiency and not forgetting a beautiful smile.
What are the key attributes of a good hospitalian?
The key attribute of a good hospitalian is teamwork. The hospitality sector
requires a high degree of collaboration and coordination; to provide smooth
service, staff members from various divisions must work together. Effective collaboration
towards shared objectives is a hallmark of a competent hospitalist.
How important is it to combine academics with practical experience to
make students fully prepared for the labour market?
This is vital, especially the practical experience part as it ensures students are
readily available for the industry and can easily comprehend in the work environment.
How do you inspire your students?
I always tell my students to look at the end goal, how hospitality can open so
many doors and the best part is that they can work internationally once they
complete their studies.
What do you believe are the latest hospitality trends?
Bleisure and workcation travel! The popularity of ‘workcations’ and ‘bleisure’
travel, where people combine business and pleasure travel, has increased as
a result of being able to work remotely. Hotels and resorts are embracing this
trend by providing co-working areas, conveniences for remote work and recreational
opportunities for visitors.
Are you a good cook?
Yes, I would like to believe so.
What is your go-to dinner for a busy mom?
Probably something quick and easy like spaghetti bolognese. It’s also one of
those dishes that you can hide lots of veggies in it and the kids will still love it! I
add grated carrots and spinach and it
goes down a treat.
What does your six-year-old son
like best?
He loves homemade dagwood with
chips! I know it sounds like a lot of
work, but thank goodness for air
fryers.
What five things are always in your
pantry or fridge?
Eggs, milk, fruit juice, yoghurt and …
sweets!
Do you have a favourite recipe that
you can share?
As you may have guessed, I have a
sweet tooth, so this recipe is one I
make whenever I feel like a fabulous
dessert.
Malva Pudding
Ingredients
200ml sugar
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon apricot jam
150g all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 generous tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon vinegar
80ml milk
For the sauce
200ml fresh cream
100g of butter
120g of sugar
80ml hot water
2 teaspoons vanilla essence
Method:
Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease an oven-proof
dish. In a bowl, beat the sugar
and eggs with an electric beater,
until thick, then add the apricot jam
and mix through. Melt the butter in a
small saucepan and then add the butter
and vinegar to the wet mixture.
Next, sift in the flour, baking soda and
salt and combine. Add this mixture
with the milk to the egg mixture in
the mixing bowl and beat well. Pour
into the oven-proof dish and bake
until golden brown (30-45 minutes).
While it is baking, melt together the
ingredients for the sauce in a pot and
stir well. Keep warm and pour over
the pudding as soon as it comes out
of the oven.
Leave to stand awhile before serving.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
coarse maize meal, 4 Tbsp sour
cream, 1 tsp salt, ¼ cup plain flour,
1 tsp Aromat (optional), ½ cup dry
breadcrumbs, 6 eggs for the scotch
eggs, 2 extra eggs, beaten for coating,
tomato chutney or sweet chilli sauce.
Method:
Preheat oven to 180°. Line a baking
tray with baking paper. Place a large
saucepan over medium heat, add
water and milk, pour in the maize meal,
whisking until smooth.
Bring to the boil and whisk constantly
for 5 minutes, until thickened. Remove
from heat and stir through the salt
and sour cream, set aside to cool.
Meanwhile, bring a large saucepan of
water to a simmer. Add four eggs, in
their shells, and cook for 6 minutes,
then add to an ice bath. Once cooled,
gently peel each egg and set aside.
Mix the plain flour with the Aromat
(optional) on a flat plate. Keep an extra
plate on hand for later.
Prepare a greased baking tray or line
with baking paper. Form a large patty
of the maize mixture. Roll one egg in
flour to coat, then place in the centre
of the patty. Shape the patty around
the egg to create an even sphere, then
roll again in flour. Set aside on a plate
and repeat with remaining eggs. You
will likely have some of the maize meal
mix left over, depending on how big
you want your scotch eggs.
Whisk the extra eggs and dip the
coated maize eggs into the beaten
eggs and then roll in the breadcrumbs,
place on the greased baking tray.
Bake for 15-20 minutes until crisp
and golden brown. Serve warm with
tomato chutney or sweet chilli sauce.
Amasi marinated fried chicken topped with poached egg, served on amagwinya
Serves 2; Prep time 30 minutes + 2
hours for marinading; cooking time:
20 minutes
Ingredients:
2 deboned chicken thighs or breast
fillets, skinless
For the marinade:
150ml Amasi (may substitute with
buttermilk or plain yoghurt); 1
Tbsp smoked paprika; Pinch fine
salt; squeeze of lemon juice; 1 tsp
smooth mustard
For the paprika mayo:
1 large egg, at room temperature; 1
Tbsp smooth mustard; 1 Tbsp red
or white wine vinegar; 1 tsp paprika
powder; big pinch fine salt; 1 tsp fresh
lemon juice; 1 cup (250ml) sunflower
or canola oil
For cooking:
1 litre sunflower oil for frying; 100g
plain flour; salt and pepper
To serve:
2 large amagwinya or hamburger
buns; paprika mayo; pickles (optional);
lettuce; 2 large eggs, poached
Method:
In a non-metallic bowl whisk the marinade ingredients together, and marinate
the chicken for 2-4 hours, covered in the fridge.
While the chicken is marinating, make the mayo. Place all the ingredients
except the oil in a jug, and using a hand blender, whiz all the ingredients
together, slowly pouring in the oil and blend to create a thick emulsion. Set
aside. After 1 ½ hours, remove the chicken from the fridge and allow to stand at
room temp for 30 minutes.
Heat the oil in a saucepan. Place the flour and salt and pepper (according to
taste) in a shallow bowl. Remove chicken from the marinade and place in the
flour, coating both sides well, shake off the excess flour.
Fry the chicken for 3-5 minutes (depending on thickness) on each side until
golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towel lined
plate. To assemble, cut the amagwinya, or hamburger buns, in half and spread
with paprika mayo (reserve some for serving), arrange lettuce leaves and pickles,
top with the fried chicken. Poach the eggs until done to your liking and top the
chicken with the poached egg and a good dollop of the paprika mayo.
Boerewors rolls with chilli fried egg
Serves 4; prep time 10 minutes; cooking time 20 minutes
Ingredients:
2 large brown onions, thinly sliced; 2 Tbsp olive oil; 4 pieces
boerewors, approximately 150g each; 4 large eggs; 2 Tbsp
chilli or olive oil to fry; sweet chilli sauce to serve; 4 hot dog
rolls, sliced
Method:
Heat the 2 Tbsp olive oil in a large pan and add the sliced
onions. Gently fry for 8-10 minutes until the onions are soft
and golden. Remove the onions to a separate bowl and
cover with foil to keep warm. In the same pan heat the chilli
oil, or plain oil if you prefer, and fry the eggs until done to
your liking. Boerewors is almost always braaied, but you can
also pan fry. Cook the boerewors until it’s cooked through
but still juicy.
To serve:
Place the boerewors into the fresh rolls and top with a fried
egg and onions. Drizzle with sweet chilli sauce.
COLOUR!
Be bold and inject a sense of joy into
your home with colour.
Colour plays a pivotal role in shaping the
ambience and mood of your space. While
neutral and muted tones have long been the
go-to choice for many homeowners over the
years, more adventurous colours are becoming
popular because of their ability to inject
personality, creativity, and a sense of excitement
into the home.
Palesa Ramaisa, Dulux Colour Expert, shares
how you can use bold and adventurous colour
choices to ignite creativity and breathe new life
into your home.
24 Get It Joburg South • Alberton • Bedfordview • Greenstone • Modderfontein September 2024
Creating a focal point
One of the most effective ways to incorporate colour into your home
is to create a design focal point. Whether it’s a brightly coloured
accent, a vibrant piece of furniture, or a bold piece of artwork, a focal
point can serve as a conversation starter and set the tone of the space.
‘If you’re new to the world of bold colour, start by incorporating small
accents and accessories. As you become more comfortable, you can
gradually introduce larger elements such as wall colours and furniture,’
says Ramaisa. By choosing a colour that resonates with you and
reflects your personality, you can create a space that is striking and
uniquely yours.
Considering the mood and atmosphere
When choosing colours for your home, it’s important to consider the mood and
atmosphere you want to create in each room. Warm and vibrant colours such as
Dulux’s colour of the Year, Sweet Embrace along with its palettes can energise a
space and add a sense of coziness, while cool and calming colours like blues and
greens can create a tranquil and relaxing environment.
‘While bold use of colour can be exciting and visually
stimulating, it’s important to maintain a sense of
balance and harmony in your home decor and design. It
is important to use colours that balance one another to
create a cohesive and harmonious look’
Embracing colour in unexpected places
While walls and furniture are obvious spaces to incorporate colour, you should
not overlook the opportunity to add adventurous and uplifting colours in
unexpected places. Consider painting the inside of your bookcase, the trim on a
door, or the ceiling in a bold and vibrant hue.
‘We often think about the use of colour on walls, furniture, and accessories,
however pops of colour in unexpected places can create a unique and
memorable statement look. Go for colours that complement your existing
décor and add to the overall aesthetic of your home,’ concludes Ramaisa. These
unexpected touches of colour can add depth and interest to any home space.
Using different colour palettes in contrasting ways can help you to create home
spaces that are not only visually stunning but also engaging and inspiring
– radiantly reflecting your personality. So why not take the plunge and start
exploring the exciting world of adventurous colour choices in your home today?
With Spring here and the frost melting away, it’s time to sow
This month’s indoor plant is the glowing deep red, almost black leaves
of Peperomia Caperata Luna that make this the ideal Halloween plant,
but that doesn’t mean having to wait until November to enjoy this
striking plant. Although they are not fussy plants, Peperomia have very
specific requirements. They should not be over-watered and do not like
consistently moist soil. Neither do they like drying out completely either.
The best is to water when the top 5cm of soil feels dry, while maintaining
humidity around the plant by regularly misting its leaves. To maintain
its leaf colour, make sure it receives bright indirect light, but not direct
sunlight. Remove the flowering spikes once flowering is over as this saps
the plant’s energy. Details: lvgplant.co.za
If you are on the lookout for
something different in tomatoes,
look out for RAW’s Bumble Bee Mix.
These cherry tomatoes are a mix
of striped, pink, purple and sunrise
colours. The fruits are juicy, full of
flavour and pickable, or for snacking
off the vine, within 80 to 110 days
from transplanting. Grow in full sun
and sow 2 to 3 plants in a container
or in a well composted garden bed,
spacing plants 60cm by 60cm. Plants
grow 1m to 1.5m high and some
support is advisable. Water regularly
during the growing season and feed
pot grown tomatoes with a liquid
Salvia Nemorosa Sensation for its
compact plants. Plant it as a border
in small gardens or massed for
larger landscapes, as well as in patio
pots. The dense flowering spikes
stand upright above the aromatic
grey-green leaves, attracting bees,
butterflies and other pollinators. Salvia
Sensation grows best in full sun but
can tolerate partial shade. It needs
well composted soil that drains well
and regular watering. It is heat and
drought tolerant once established.
Of birds and bees ...
Art, flowers and open gardens worth travelling for
One of nine homesteads participating
in Elgin Open Gardens this year, and
situated at the foot of the Houw Hoek
mountain range, the gardens at the
historic 1811 Wildekrans Country
House are home to abundant birdlife
and tumbling natural beauty. It’s all
streams and water ponds, headyscented
heirloom roses and shaded
lawns, olive groves and fruit trees
and contemporary sculptures. It also,
due to Alison Green and Barry Gould
being avid art collectors for more
than 30 years, boasts a contemporary
collection that includes Bruce Arnott,
Deborah Bell, George Pemba, Wilma
Cruise, Guy du Toit, Robert Hodgins,
William Kentridge and Hylton Nel.
Every year, Alison and Barry invite
younger artists to exhibit on the
estate during the charity garden
show, and this year they’ve specifically
selected Joanna Lee Miller and Caryn
McArthy, whose works sync magically
with the wild surrounds.
Where Wild Things Grow is an
exhibition of Joanna and Caryn’s
fynbos-and floral-inspired works. To
enhance the theme of natural beauty,
Alison and the artists are transforming
the time-worn barn at Wildekrans
into an Alice in Wonderland world
of whimsy ... expect fresh flowers,
flowers, flowers and more flowers
– against walls the colour of a
magician’s cape.
The Wildekrans County House
gardens and art exhibition will be
open for walk-in visits, countryinspired
refreshments will be on
sale. This is a twice-a-year-only open
garden, so really shouldn’t be missed.
The open days are on Saturday
and Sunday November 2 & 3, and 9
entrance fee but a donation to The
After 30 years of magazine design in
Cape Town, Caryn McArthy dabbled
in floristry for a year, surrounded
by fragrant blooms and foliage.
Intoxicated by the scents and stems
she dealt with daily, she wanted to
capture the transience of her floral
arrangements. It was then she realised
her long-held desire to express herself
through oils on canvas. “It was the love
of flowers that gave me the courage
to put my fears to one side and just
paint.” @cabbages_and_kings_flowers,
SA artist Joanna Lee Miller trained
at the Florence Academy of Art in
Italy. Her expressive paintings of
landscapes and people explore how
our connection with nature can help
us deeper understand ourselves. She
paints exclusively in oils, creating
her landscapes en plein air. “Being
in nature, where wild things grow,
creates the space to truly connect
with who we are. It is deeply personal,
exciting, full of possibility, but also
strongly grounded in authenticity.”
The mountains
are calling
A family-friendly trip to the Berg provided space to reconnect and recharge.
Anyone who has spent time in
the Berg will know that it holds a
special magic. It’s in the scale of
the mountains, the crisp air, the
unbeatable views. While every
season has its own beauty, we
visited in mid-winter. The nights
and early mornings were chilly
(with a sprinkle of frost here
and there), but we were treated
to sunny days, clear skies and
landscapes dotted with the most
beautiful in-bloom aloes.
IMMERSED IN NATURE
We started our trip at Sungubala
Eco Camp in the Northern
Drakensberg. Located on a
secluded farm in the mountains,
this spot is a dream for nature
lovers. We stayed in a cosy, solarpowered,
self-catering cottage
overlooking the picturesque
Sungubala Valley, where we spent
evenings around a fire and enjoyed
leisurely mornings soaking up the
uninterrupted mountain views. You
simply can’t beat the peace and
quiet in this part of the world – we
had only the sound of birds and
baboons to disrupt the silence.
ACTIVITIES AND ADVENTURES
The Northern Berg is well-known
for its hiking and there are many
trails to choose from at Sungubala.
We opted for an easy walk to Silent
the 1950s by artist and wanderer
The route took us along an old jeep
track at the base of the mountain,
through an indigenous forest and
across a clear stream – the perfect
picnic spot. For more experienced
hikers (and those travelling without
children), there are loads of longer,
more challenging options, as well
as numerous mountain biking trails
through the valley.
LUXURY GLAMPING
From Sungubala, we travelled to
the Central Drakensberg where
we settled in for a glamping
experience at Mountain Splendour
Eco-Resort in the Champagne
Valley. This family-friendly resort
boasts a range of accommodation
options, from self-catering chalets
to spacious campsites all with
lovely views of Cathkin Peak. Our
luxury glamping tent was wellappointed
with modern amenities,
including an en-suite bathroom,
fireplace and enclosed outdoor
braai area – ideal for those who like
the idea of camping but don’t want
to rough it!
READY TO EXPLORE
Mountain Splendour is great for
families as there’s plenty to keep little
ones busy. It’s located on a working
farm and there are plenty of animals
to see (and feed!) In fact, guests are
encouraged to keep their food scraps
for the resident Cameroonian dwarf
goats and piglets, who were always
pleased to see us. There’s also a
fantastic outdoor playground, walking
and cycling trails, tennis court and
swimming pool. While the Northern
Berg is a little off the beaten track and
perfect to really reconnect with nature,
this area is buzzing with activity, all
with a stunning backdrop – we loved
popping into quirky cafés, delis and
bakeries on our travels. We also took
advantage of the resort’s mountain
bike hire to explore the farm.
Mountain Splendour offers balance
and pedal bikes for kids, as well as
baby seats that can be attached to
adult bikes so the whole family can
enjoy a ride.
Celebrate the many joys of Spring
with Bruce Jack Bumble Bee Moscato
All enticing
aromas of an
exotic flower
garden, Bruce
Jack Bumble
Bee Moscato
is a light, low
alcohol and truly wonderfully
refreshing sparkling wine ... a
harmonious blend of peaches and
cream, tangy tangerine and sweet
honey, perfectly complemented by a
refreshing acidity. Made from Muscat
d’Alexandrie grapes - also known as
Hanepoot in South Africa - it’s the perfect
drink for an easy going get together. Light,
refreshing, bubbly and fun ... this is a very easy
wine to love. Love the bumble bee too ... this choice
as this Moscato’s namesake highlights Bruce Jack’s
commitment to biodiversity and the essential role of bees
in the ecosystem. Serve this well chilled on its own as a
sundowner ... but it’s also fabulously food-friendly. Try it with
oysters, mussels and grilled fish or spicy Asian cuisine, and it’s a
sensational partner to creamy desserts. For a special treat, whip up
your own cocktail by adding a touch of grenadine, a sprig of fresh thyme
to Bumble Bee and garnish with sliced strawberries. Or opt for a simpler option
with fresh orange juice topped with a slice of orange. You’ll find it at your local
Tops at SPAR, or buy online for R90 a bottle from brucejack.com.
