Looking for a new way to get into shape and fit? Then look no further and
15 simply join this community initiative happening in Meyersdal every Friday
at 4.45am. The Coffee Run, hosted from Plato Coffee at the Blue Crane Centre,
brings together runners of all fitness levels for a safe, social start to the day. These
mornings have quickly become a highlight for local residents who enjoy starting
their day with a healthy activity in the company of friends and neighbours. The
Coffee Run is more than just a run, it is a celebration of community spirit. They also
host monthly themed runs with prizes to keep things fun and engaging. Whether
you’re a seasoned runner or just starting out, they welcome everyone. Bring a
friend, a neighbour, or simply yourself to join the fun. They love to see new faces
Thaba Trails Mountain Bike Park offers one of the best trail networks for mountain
biking and trail running in Gauteng. Situated in Thabo Eco Village, you are in for
a most scenic ride. The trails are well marked, with colour-coded loops for different
skill levels, and offer real trails for real fanatics. The yellow trail is not technical for
beginners and covers 5km in a beautiful tree-lined area. The orange trail is a shorter
version of the green/blue trail, with most of the hills taken out. A lovely trail for a
short effort, and the difficulty depends on you. Suitable for most riders, beginner
and intermediate, and those not so fit - yet. Green is somewhat technical and
mostly for intermediate riders, offering a safe and challenging ride of 25 km. There
is something for everyone. The blue trail is very technical and not recommended
for in-experienced riders. On request of the riders is a rough trail with serious obstacles
and rock faces. The kiosk is open on weekends, with trails open from 6.30am to
5.30pm (last rider in). Details: facebook.com/thabatrails
Eight books. One wine. And a brilliant lifestyle magazine.
Not content with making fine wines, the Bruce Jack team
If a pancake and a crepe had a love child, it would be a
Dutch baby! Which, with oven roasted tomatoes, is the first
recipe in Yotam Ottolenghi’s much-anticipated new book.
And from there on, past salmon fishcakes with chermoula
remoulade, cheeseball lemon rice with chilli butter, and
Bohemian fish pie, to the last Malty figgy pudding recipe,
it’s just one extraordinarily sensational comfy dish after
another. But what makes it comfort food? As Yotam points
out, one kid’s melted-cheese-toasted sandwich dream is
another kid’s nightmare. Very often, behind a comforting
dish often lies a relationship: A unique attachment. From
meatloaf to matza ball soup to marble cake ... for each of
us it’s a feeling we’re remembering about them. Perhaps,
he says, it should be called memory food or community
food. Whichever ... Ottolenghi Comfort is overflowing
with dishes that may already be in your comfort food
bank, others that will hopefully, once you’ve made them
enough times for people you love, become them ... dishes
and memories and feelings to pass on from generation to
generation. R795, Ebury Press.
celebrate their strength, resilience, and determination. SPAR Women’s
Challenge Jozi delivered a sold-out event with 12 000 runners.
Glenrose Xaba took the top spot in the race, crossing the finish line
in a time of 32:48. Xaba’s victory also solidified her position as the
winner of the Grand Prix Series, making her the first South African
to claim this title since the inclusion of international athletes. Local
charities Headstart Kids, Smile Foundation and Reach for Recovery
each benefited from this event receiving a generous donation of R50
000. Keeping the crowd energised were MCs Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp
and Arnold Geerdts as participants and supporters enjoyed a day of
empowerment and community.
The sweet taste of
success
What happens if you give a young man a unique birthday present? Well, the
answer is simple. He starts experimenting until he gets the mixtures just
right and paves his way to success.
We introduce Paul Ballen, founder of Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream. Reserved,
almost shy and constantly on the go he sure is a difficult man to pin down, but
we finally caught up with him at his flagship outlet in Parkhurst.
The saying that the proof is in the pudding is equally true to Paul’s ice cream - the
proof of success sure is in the taste of the oh so many flavours to choose from.
But where did it all start?
‘It’s a story that has been told way too many times’ Paul said. ‘In 2011 I got an ice
cream machine as a birthday present. At that point in time, I had no idea how
ice cream was made. After extensive experimentation in my parents kitchen and
some posts online, I was soon known as the Joburg Ice Cream King.
‘Friends, family and online followers
placed their orders online, and I slaved
away making 1L batches at a time to
fulfil their orders.
‘In 2014, my university friend, Josh and
I, registered the business, and since
then the business has grown from
strength to strength, not without its
challenges.’
One can’t help to ask if he still has the
‘famous’ first ice cream maker? ‘Sadly not, but surprisingly they still make them.
I always suggest them to those that want to start experimenting in their home
kitchens.’
Today, being famous for his ice cream he is quite frank about the fact that during
his childhood and after school, he was not one of those who had a strong idea of
what he wanted to do with his life or where he wanted to end up career wise.
‘So to answer your question if I ever thought I would end up as an owner / founder
of a brand this successful, no not really. A lot in life is unknown but today we
are reaping the success of those first experimental batches of ice cream.
‘Over the past few years, we have focused on expanding our retail footprint
through franchising. Currently we have 13 Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream Stores, of
these five are company stores and the balance franchises. Our Parkhurst store is
definitely our flagship store – we are busy with constructing an outdoor area that
will make this the perfect summer hangout.
‘We have also recently launched our first Paul’s Homemade Soft Serve concept
which is opening at the newly renovated Thrupps Centre in Illovo.
‘Besides our Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream stores, we have a large number of retailers
and independents that stock our product, from restaurants, to forecourts to
fruit and vegetable stores,’ he continued.
Something new
Looking at the flavours on offer, you are clearly not scared of trying new and
unusual things. Is this something that just comes naturally and when and where
do you normally have those light bulb moments that say: ‘Ah, these flavours will
go well together’?
‘We spend a large amount of time and energy coming up with new concepts
and ideas for our flavours. We generally pair together flavours for a particular
theme. For example, at the moment our flavour theme is Journey Through Asia.
We have developed eight new flavours including Five Chocolate Five Spice, Gulab
Jamun, Chinese Candy, Yuzu Toasted Marshmallow, Vegan Coconut Caramel,
Dirty Chai Latte, Cotton Cheesecake and Thai Pina Colada. These flavours not only
pair well together, but would also be a delicious combination with some of our
classic flavours that are always on offer.
So called side hustles
In his shops you will find something else, sitting subtle on a shelf yet with packaging
bold enough to draw the eye in, inviting you to a must taste, especially if
you love a good coffee. And yes, the coffee is just as good as the ice cream.
But when did coffee come into play and why?
‘Coffee and ice cream are always a perfect combination. However, we always noticed
that our customers only recognised us for our ice cream and not our coffee.
‘During Covid, we acquired a well-established coffee company that was well-entrenched
in the corporate space. Along with a company re-brand and redeveloping
the infrastructure, we introduced a new brand within our retail stores, Killer
Coffee. By doing this, we would create an association with a strong sister brand,
whose focus was only coffee and that could exist as stand-alone coffee sites.’
Into the future
With surprise upon surprise there surely must be other ventures and future
plans? ‘Yes, we have some epic new projects in the pipeline – but I have to keep
these a secret for now.
‘We have big ambitions! We have a lot of interest in the franchise space – so will
be expanding our retail footprint significantly in the next few years locally and,
hopefully, eventually internationally. Along with this, we will continue to grow
our retail footprint to ensure that more and more people have access to our
product.’
Any last thoughts for those out there who want to start up something?
‘Make sure you have grit, passion and perseverance and surround yourself with
the right people.’
On a personal note
With business chats out of the way we also get to know a little bit more
about Paul.
He grew up in Saxonwold in Johannesburg and attended school at King David
Victory Park Primary and High School.
‘I have a twin sister and went to Wits
University for my Undergrad, Honours
and Wits Business School for my PDM.’
Life on the run does not allow for
too much time to relax and a typical
day in his life is waking up at around
5.30am, off to the gym at around
6.30am and being at the office before
9am. ‘Then my days are typically filled
with meetings till around midday and
then spending the rest of the day in
our retail stores.’
There is one special relationship in
his life at this time and that is with his
Persian cat, Sunshine.
Being a nature lover he likes to spend
time either in Delta Park or Emmerentia
Dam during weekends. ‘I’m
generally in Parkhurst or Rosebank
and have a long list of favourite restaurants.’
Apart from escaping into nature (he
generally finds his quiet space in the
Drakensberg or Western Cape), he
also sees exercise and cooking as a
form of relaxation.
OFF THE CUFF:
• Do you prefer summer
or winter?
Summer, obviously! Its
ice cream time.
• Which do you prefer – sweet
treats or salty snacks?
I’m around sweet treats all day –
so salty/savoury snacks
• Do you stand by the saying:
‘Ice cream is cheaper than
therapy’?
It definitely is.
• Your favourite flavour of
ice cream?
That question gets asked very
frequently. I would say it depends
on how I’m feeling on the day –
for classics, I would probably
go for scoop of Vietnamese
coffee and then one of our
seasonal flavours
• Which do like most – art, music,
food or travel?
Can one love them all equally?
• If you could change one thing
in your life, what would
that be?
Add more time in the day.
The perfect fit:
A guide to choosing swimwear
Whether you’re planning to lounge around the pool at home or hit the beach this
summer, a well-fitting swimsuit can make all the difference to your
comfort and confidence. But where do you start?
Swimwear is generally offered in two options - a one-piece and a two-piece.
One-pieces offer full coverage and can be a great option for those who prefer a
more modest look. Two-pieces, on the other hand, allow you to mix and match
tops and bottoms to find the perfect combination for your body type.
One piece vs two piece
Let’s start with a full swimsuit. These can come in either dress sizes (8, 10, 12, 14
and so on) or cup-sized (32D, 34DD, etc.). Some full-pieces will also offer tummy
control which can be great for ladies who feel they might need some help keeping
themselves tucked in.
Positives of a full-piece include feeling less exposed with less skin showing, as well
as shape control. A downside of a full-piece is that it can be somewhat inconvenient
when having to go to the ladies and having to get undressed.
With two pieces, there’s a plethora of
options to choose from for tops and
bottoms. Bikini tops can also come in
either dress or cup sizing. Ladies with
a heavier bust might want to explore
looking at underwired options that
are cup-sized. These will provide more
support.
When it comes to styles of bikini tops,
one can choose from halter-neck cuts,
to balconette or bandeau options.
Generally a bandeau, also known as a
16 Get It Joburg South • Alberton • Bedfordview • Greenstone • Modderfontein November 2024
oob tube, will come with detachable straps. These are great for ladies who don’t
want tan lines on their shoulders.
Another option available is a tankini. This is a two-piece, but great for ladies who
want to cover their tummies but don’t want to be restricted by a one-piece. The
best way to explain a tankini is a bikini with a strappy T-shirt. These are designed
either flared or fitted.
When it comes to matching bottoms, there are all sorts of styles to choose from,
including tie-side, Brazilian-cut, high-waist, as well as high-leg bikini briefs.
Tie-side bikini briefs generally sit low on the hips offering medium coverage over
the bottom. A Brazilian bikini brief will also sit low on the hips with a cheeky cutaway
back with less bottom coverage.
High-waist bikini bottoms tend to sit high on the waist which is a great option
for ladies who still want to show off their curves as it smooths out your figure and
helps to conceal belly rolls.
High-leg bikini briefs will also sit high on the hips but have a higher scoop leg line
for reduced coverage.
Taking care of your swim suite
Remember, every body is beautiful and there’s a swimsuit out there to suit every
shape and size.
Investing in a high-quality swimsuit will ensure it is made from sturdier fabrics that
are more resistant to sagging and won’t stretch so easily. Some tips to look after
your swimwear include hand washing in cold water using only neutral soap; soak
only if necessary, for a few minutes, in cold clear water, to remove any chlorine, salt
and soap residue and line-dry in the shade to prevent fading.
Avoid using bleach and fabric softener on your swimwear, as these will break down
the content of your swimwear.
Finally, have fun choosing the right swimwear for your body shape. Look for styles
that make you feel more confident and comfortable. Prioritise fit over trends. Remember
to be open-minded and don’t assume that
you cannot wear a specific style because of your
body shape or size.
By following these tips, you can find a swimsuit that
flatters your body and helps you feel your best. So
go ahead, dive in and enjoy the summer!
What would Summer be without the juicy lushness of peaches, plums and nectarines?
For the Summer of 2024, fab recipe
developers and food stylists Emma Nkunzana
and Masego Mbonyana have teamed up
with Juicy Delicious to create a catalogue of
South African-inspired dishes. Whether you
are hosting beach picnics or swish parties,
braaiing in your backyard or cooking up a
three-course feast, stone fruit add a hit of
freshness that will wow your guests.
Tips for making the most of the season
Masego and Emma’s tips to make the most
of the South African stone fruit season
• For easy peeling of poached nectarines,
submerge cooked nectarines into an ice
bath for two to four minutes.
• Grill halved peaches or nectarines until
caramelised, then serve them as a side dish
for braaied meats. They are just as fantastic
as an easy dessert, drizzled with honey,
sprinkled with cinnamon and serve with a
dollop of vanilla ice cream.
• Make a glaze using pureed peaches or
nectarines, adding a touch of brown sugar,
balsamic vinegar, and mustard. Brush it over
your roast meats during the final stages
of cooking for a sweet, tangy finish that
balances savoury flavours.
• Create a festive stone fruit salsa by
combining diced plums, peaches, or
nectarines with chopped red onion, fresh
coriander, and a squeeze of lime. This fresh
and zesty salsa is perfect as a topping for
grilled chicken, braaied fish, or even over
nachos for a summer twist.
• If you want a tarter flavour from your
stone fruit, choose slightly under ripe
ones. They also hold their shape well for a
stunning presentation.
• Add thinly sliced nectarines or plums
into a summer salad with mixed greens,
toasted nuts, and crumbled blue cheese.
The combination of sweet, juicy fruit and
the salty richness of the cheese creates a
beautiful balance of flavours.
Curry marinated grilled peaches and blueberry salad
Masego’s Curry marinated grilled peaches and blueberry salad is an artful
blend of spices and citrus with the juiciness of peaches and blueberries
topped with the smooth saltiness of Danish feta cheese. Serves 4 to 6
You’ll need: 4 peaches, cored and cut in eighths, 60ml olive oil, 1 tsp curry
powder, ½ tsp orange zest, 125g blueberries, 80g wild rocket, 100g pecan
nuts, lightly roasted, 100g Danish feta
Honey dressing: 60ml honey, 60ml olive oil, 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar,
1 lemon, zest and juice, 10g Italian parsley, finely chopped, salt and
pepper to taste
To make: In a mixing bowl, combine prepared peaches with curry powder,
olive oil, orange zest and a pinch of salt. Combine well and refrigerate for
20 minutes. Heat a griddle pan over high heat place, peaches on the pan
and grill on each side until you have charred marks and set aside to cool.
Reserve the curry marinade for the dressing.
For the honey dressing, combine the reserved curry marinade with honey,
olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lemon zest and juice, parsley and salt and
pepper to taste and set aside.
To assemble, on a salad platter plate, lay rocket, grilled peaches,
blueberries, pecan nuts and crumble feta cheese. Drizzle with dressing
and gently toss salad just before serving.
Indoor plant of the month
Venus flytrap is a carnivorous little
plant that sounds creepy enough for
Halloween hi-jinks but is actually quite
practical and beautiful in a bizarre
kind of way. The leaves act as fly traps,
with the inner part of the leaf looking
like a pink mouth surrounded by
spiny, sharp teeth. Along comes a fly
and the leaf snaps shut.
When grown indoors the Venus
flytrap needs at least six hours of sun,
so it will thrive in a sunny room, on a
windowsill or on the patio. Place the
plant in a 2 to 4cm deep saucer filled
with water. To prevent it from rotting,
let the tray dry out for a short period
every week but never let the plant
dry out completely as this will kill it.
There is no need to fertilise because
the flies provide all the nutrients the
plant needs.
In Winter the plant goes dormant
and dies down. Move it to a cool area
so that it stays dormant. Water less,
keeping the soil lightly moist. Come
Summer, move it back into the sun.
Veggie of the month
Squash Bennings Green is a quick and easy
to grow heirloom patty pan squash, that is regarded as
one of the tastiest of the Summer squash varieties -
with a nutty, slightly sweet flavour. The saucer shaped
fruit has scalloped edges and is pale green
when young, maturing to a creamy white. The
medium sized bushy plant is a prolific producer
throughout Summer, with the first fruit ready to
harvest within 50 days of germination. Sow seed
directly into the soil in a sunny position, in fertile, well
composted soil. Water around the base of the plant
and don’t allow it to completely dry out. The fruit is at
its tastiest when eaten young and green.
Older fruit can be added to slow cooked stews,
casseroles and potjies. Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
SWEET
& SUNNY
Tasty Summer squash, beautiful and bizarre
leaf snaps and nectar rich flowers
Garden tasks for November
• It is still a good time to plant Summer flowers
like impatiens and begonias for shade, and
dahlias, gazanias, gaillardia, gaura, marigolds,
portulaca and salvia for sun.
• Feed roses and hydrangeas once a month
and water more often if it gets very hot. Renew
mulch to keep the soil moist for longer.
• Succession sowing of most vegetables can
be continued up until the end of this month.
• In the absence of rain, water deeply at
least once a week.
• To prevent fungus diseases in the lawn, do not
water during the hottest time of the day. Rather
water early in the morning or late afternoon.
We’re planting …
Cuphea Sweet talk because
it’s the perfect pollinator plant.
It produces nectar-rich flowers in
shades of bright red, deep pink, or
lavender splash. Plants are low growing
and compact, suitable for a sunny bed,
border or containers. They are heat tolerant
and flower from Spring to Autumn. For
a neat and colourful border, space
plants 20 to 30cm apart. Plants are
heat tolerant but will do best with
regular deep watering in
Summer. Fertilise once
a month.
Slack-packing through the
De Hoop Nature Reserve
Four days of walking and exploring the beauty of the De Hoop Nature Reserve ...
enjoying the wealth of marine, bird and animal life and discovering rare plants.
And at the end of each day’s hike, tucking into gourmet meals and staying over in a
luxurious, comfortable villa. Ramblers dreams are made of this.
Slack-packing adventures are made for those of us who love to walk
through magnificent reserves, connect with nature, but aren’t that
keen on the whole camping-in-the-middle-of-nowhere thing! After a
strenuous day, the last thing we want is to fiddle around with tent poles
and try to rustle up something on an open fire.
So we’re mad about the newly launched The De Hoop Trail: Vlei to
Whales ... a fully catered and guided four day, three night experience
where you’ll cover about 38km through the pristine De Hoop Nature
and Marine Reserve. One of the largest natural areas managed by
CapeNature, it’s just a wonderful four days of sea, deserted beaches,
exploring the Ramsar-listed vlei, wide open spaces, coastal fynbos, and
diverse animal and bird life, including the endangered Cape Vulture
and the very best whale watching.
Guests stay in the De Hoop Collection’s De Mond Villa, a newly
restored and refurbished Villa right on the edge of the Ramsar-listed
vlei. An exclusive blend of authenticity, luxury and comfort, the five
en-suite bedroomed De Mond Villa offers awesome interior decor,
Wi-Fi, a private outside area with barbeque and swimming pool and
the most incredible views. It is completely off the grid (thanks to a
combination of solar and gas facilities) and being right on the edge of
the vlei spectacular birdlife awaits you, plus the possible sightings of
wild bush pigs, otters, rock dassies, herds of Eland and even leopard
tracks. Should the villa already be booked, The Collection’s historic
Melkkamer Homestead on the opposite side of the vlei is offered as
an alternative. And you won’t go hungry ... guests tuck into breakfasts
or brunches, lunches and picnics, snacks and dinners.
De Hoop is an easy three hour drive from Cape Town or George.
A minimum of four guests are required - and you should be
reasonably fit to enjoy the experience. Not suitable for those under 12.
The rate of R14200 a person (valid until Sept 2025) includes the three
night/four day experience, with a guide, all meals and snacks, local
house wines, spirits, beers and soft drinks, and road transfers to and
from de Mond Villa and within de Hoop.
