Clean and
cozy home
Imagine yourself sitting in a clean and cozy living
room after a full and tiring day. Isn’t that a great way
to relax and let go of the day’s care? It may seem like
a trivial thing, but having a tidy, comfortable home
is one of the important elements of well-being. Your
environment should promote a sense of safety and
wholesomeness to give you and your family peace
of mind when you are spending quality time together.
On the other hand, when your living room is filled with
pollutants and harmful toxins, it would feel as though
your family’s well-being is being compromised inside
and out.
Thanks to Young Living’s natural, plant-derived
products, you can keep your home fresh and clean
without harsh chemicals. In this quick guide, you
will learn why natural cleaning is important, how to
identify chemicals that are harmful to your home and
what chemicals to avoid.
Did you know?
Indoor air is 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Most
cleaning products contain Volatile Organic Compounds
(VOCs) 2 that have been associated with many health
problems. VOCs are released when we use the products
and they linger in the air long after we finish cleaning.
When we breathe, we inhale the air – as well as whatever
is in the air. 1 1

Living chemical-free:
The dirty truth behind
household cleaning products
Why should you
care about the
chemicals in your
cleaning products?
In the US, household
cleaning supplies are
one of the top five
substance classes
accounting for calls
to the National
Poison Control
Center.
Some ingredients
found in cleaners
may be linked to
cancer, reproductive
and developmental
toxicity, allergies,
irritation, and burns
and poisoning. 5
Some conventional
cleaning products
contain ingredients
that are toxic, nonbiodegradable,
and
from non-renewable
resources like
petroleum, so they
harm the earth's
ecosystems.
Many cleaning products, including spray
cleaners and disinfecting wipes, contain
asthmagens — chemicals that can
either worsen asthma or cause asthma
in someone who never previously had
it. Studies show that using traditional
cleaning sprays as rarely as once a week
can increase your risk of developing adultonset
asthma. 4
You may rely heavily on cleaning products that usually come
in various scents to exude a fresh, clean feeling for your home.
The truth is many commercial cleaning products contain
harmful chemicals that could result in immediate reactions
due to direct exposure when combined with indoor air.
Did you know that in the US, cleaning products aren’t
regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)?
It’s true! The companies that manufacture cleaning products
are held to no safety standard and no requirement for listing
ingredients. However, in 1976, the Toxic Substance Control Act
was administered which created comprehensive controls over
toxic substances. Still, there are thousands of chemicals in
cleaning products that have never been tested for safety. All
these chemicals could be lingering in your cleaning products,
and you’ll never even know it.
Regular use of cleaning sprays
can have as much of an impact
on health as smoking a pack
of cigarettes a day. 2
Many toxicants invade our
bodies. They have been found
in blood, urine, and breast milk,
as well as in the umbilical cord
blood of newborns. 3
Infants exposed in the womb
to cleaning products used
by their mothers may suffer
lower birth weight, lower IQ,
and wheezing and respiratory
symptoms that may persist
throughout childhood. 4
Cleaning products
contribute to
concentrations of
many common
pollutants that are
2-5 times higher
inside homes than
outside. 1
Nurses who used
disinfectants to
clean surfaces at
least once a week
had a 25-38 percent
increased risk of
developing lung
disease. 6
Some chemicals
accumulate in our
bodies over time,
and the impact may
show up long after
exposure. The impact
may be greater during
specific periods of
development (womb,
infancy, and puberty).
Even tiny doses can
be very potent.
Chemicals all
around your home
Chemical
What is it?
Can be found in?
Chemical
PARABENS
(methyl-, isobutyl-,
propyl-, and others)
What is it?
Preservatives commonly
used to prevent the
growth of bacteria and
mold. They’re endocrine
disruptors and may alter
hormone mechanisms
and interfere with male
reproduction
Can be found in?
• Shampoo, face
cleanser, body wash,
body lotion, and
foundation
TRICLOSAN
An endocrine
disruptor that can
cause antibiotic
resistance and is
linked to increased
allergen sensitivity
and disruption of
thyroid function even
at low levels.
• Liquid soap
• Bar soap
• Toothpaste
• Antiperspirants
MIT
(methylisothiazolinone)
and BIT
(benzisothiazolinone)
Known skin irritants
that are considered
neurotoxic. They’re
antibacterial
ingredients that
are EPA-registered
pesticides and used as
preservatives.
• Personal care
products
DEA-RELATED
INGREDIENTS
Emulsifiers or foaming
agents that may be
carcinogens.
• Creamy or foaming
products like
moisturizers and
shampoos
PHENOXYETHANOL
A common preservative
considered to be an
endocrine disruptor,
neurotoxic, and a skin
and eye irritant.
• Many ‘non-toxic’
cleaning products
How do you know
if a cleaning
product is harmful?
One of the best ways to turn
your home into a natural
haven is to be aware of what
ingredients to avoid in your
personal care and cleaning
products. We are exposed to
chemical products every day,
but you can avoid them if you
know what they are.
PHTHALATES
(DBP, DEHP, DEP,
and others)
SODIUM LAURYL
SULFATE and SODIUM
LAURETH SULFATE
(SLS and SLES)
A class of plasticizing
chemicals used to
make products more
pliable or to make
fragrances linger
longer. Phthalates
disrupt the endocrine
system and may
cause birth defects.
Surfactants that
create bubbles
and foam in soaps,
shampoos, and
toothpastes. They can
cause skin irritation,
trigger allergies, and
disrupt hormones
and are linked to
neurotoxicity. SLES is
often contaminated
with 1,4-dioxane.
• Synthetic fragrance
and fragranced
household products
• Soap, shampoo,
and body wash
QUATERNARY
AMMONIUM
COMPOUNDS
or ‘quats’
POLYETHYLENE
GLYCOL
(PEG compounds)
PARFUM/FRAGRANCE
Chemicals associated
with asthma and
reduced fertility, as
well as birth defects in
animals.
Can be contaminated
with 1,4-dioxane, which
may be a carcinogen.
• Antibacterial
cleaning supplies,
disinfecting air
fresheners, and
fabric softeners
• Soap, cream
• Sunscreen
• Shampoo
Synthetic fragrances that have been linked
to asthma, allergies, skin irritation, metabolic
syndrome, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and nervous
system, respiratory, and endocrine disruptions.
Fragrances may contain any combination of more
than 3,000 chemical ingredients. Companies
in the US don’t have to disclose the fragrance
formula because it is protected under federal law’s
classification of trade secrets.
