COMPOSER’S NOTE
My Own Design is a set of songs about self-discovery, facing life’s
uncertainties, living with purpose, and finding joy in the unfolding
journey. Its themes and lyrics draw inspiration from reflections written
by choristers of Vassar College Treble Chorus in early 2023.
The first section, ‘Where Do I Go?’, is about facing the uncertainties in
our lives while grappling with feelings of fear and self-doubt. The tone
is heartfelt, introspective, and at times impassioned, highlighting the
internal struggle between the fear of making the ‘wrong choice’ and
the recognition that personal growth requires the courage to take risks.
‘Step by step’ is an anthem about self-discovery and overcoming
challenges in life. This movement is inspired by the many wonderful
words of encouragement and musings I found in the chorister reflections
that I gathered. In particular, the refrain is drawn from one chorister’s
recollection of how when they were young they would hop ‘stone by
stone’ to reach the other side—something they now think of as they try
to overcome obstacles and move toward their goals.
The final movement, ‘Joy’, is about discovering and appreciating the
simple yet profound moments in life that spark joy: from the warmth
of a cup of hot chocolate to singing with friends. The character is quite
animated and jubilant, encapsulating the boundless and liberating
essence of joy.
