WELCOME
A warm White Rose welcome to the many thousands of runners, supporters,
volunteers and race officials looking forward to the 2016 Plusnet Yorkshire Half
Marathon - Sheffield. We wish you all a hugely enjoyable and successful day.
The Half Marathon and its Mini and Junior runs are enjoyed by competitors of
all abilities and, whatever your goal – a PB, to fundraise or simply to have fun,
you can be sure of super support as you make your way around a course that
shows off Sheffield – The Outdoor City at its very best.
With a city centre start and finish, and glorious views of the Peak District, last
year’s event was hailed a winner with over 7,000 runners signing up and a
wonderful £175,000, for its partner charities alone, and this year is set to be
even better still.
Good luck to everyone taking part.
Councillor Sioned-Mair Richards,
Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods at Sheffield City Council
The nights are getting lighter, the runs are getting longer and time is
ticking towards the opening event of the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon
Series in Sheffield. It’s going to be an absolute cracker; the route is
tough but stunning, and with the superb Sheffield crowds, it’s one of
the best supported runs on the calendar.
The team have been grafting in the office all winter and it’s fair to
say we’re all chomping at the bit to get stuck in. Entry numbers look
fantastic, and we’re constantly inspired by the stories that get you guys
to the start line.
Good luck with your prep and on behalf of the team, I look forward to
seeing you on the day.
Charlie Tatman
Event Director – 2016 Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon - Sheffield
great chance for a negative split time, and KM flags will guide you home.
3. Plusnet Medal Engraving
Our sponsors Plusnet will once again be providing FREE medal engraving
for all finishers. Simply find the engraving tent in Peace Gardens.
4. Mini & Junior Run
Jane Tomlinson’s
www.runforall.com
Did you know there is a Mini & Junior event taking place whilst you’re out
on the course? It’s for 3 to 14 year olds and is FREE to enter, so why not
bring the family down?
5. Baggage Store
The Baggage Store has moved for 2016, and is now located
in Tudor Square.
WHAT WILL BE INCLUDED
IN MY RACE PACK?
Your Race Number
• Don’t worry if your race pack seems
a little light. Your race number
already has your timing chip
attached to it, and there is a tear-off
baggage strip at the bottom.
• Please make sure it is worn as issued,
fixed to the front of your T-shirt or
running vest and is clearly visible.
You will need your number to take
advantage of the travel offers on the
day, use the Baggage Store and to
gain access to the assembly zones.
• You have been allocated an assembly
zone based on the predicted finish
time you gave when registering.
This is reflected by the coloured
band through your race number. For
Season Ticket runners, your assembly
zone is reflected by the thin coloured
band immediately underneath your
race number. The location of each
assembly zone is shown on the Start
& Finish map overleaf, and will be
clearly signed on the day.
Please do not swap your race number – we will not know who
to contact in an emergency if you do. Any runners doing so
will be disqualified.
Make sure you write your name, emergency contact details
and any medical information – including medication you
may be taking – on the back of the number. If you have any
conditions we need to be aware of, please mark a red cross
clearly on the front top right hand corner of your race number.
Before you drop your kit off at the Baggage Store, please
tear off the baggage label from your race number and fix it
securely to your bag. Please note that baggage is left at your
own risk and the organisers shall not be held liable for loss
or damage.
If you have any questions, please get in touch.
It’s one less thing to do on race morning.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
Mile flags and signage will be clearly
displayed around the course. The ‘King
of the Hill’ section and ‘10K To Go’ will
both be clearly signed. KM markers
will be on course from this point in
to the finish. At regular intervals on
course, welfare stations will provide the
following:
• Bottled water – kindly provided
by the .
Please be considerate of
runners behind you and throw
empty bottles in the bins
provided.
• Fixed First Aid stations, with
roaming medical provision
across the course should you
fall into difficulty.
• Toilets available on course.
The wonderful crowds in Sheffield come
out in force, pushing you on even through
the more rural sections of the course.
Our partner charities occupy a vibrant
series of cheer points across the course,
and with bands, street performers and
entertainment throughout, you won’t be
short of encouragement!
WHAT WE ASK OF YOU
PLEASE LISTEN TO THE INSTRUCTIONS OF RACE
MARSHALS AND POLICE ON ROUTE.
Most of the route will be traffic-free, although vehicles
may at times be using the same road and separated
from runners by cones.
IF YOU NEED TO WALK AT ANY POINT,
IT’S NOT A PROBLEM.
However, please be considerate to other runners and
move to the side of the route, and avoid walking in
large groups that may be difficult to overtake.
If you need to drop out, please try to make your way
to one of the clearly marked retiree points or a first aid
point on route and give your race number to a race
marshal. If you need to get to the finish area, we’ll
arrange transport for you as soon as possible.
according to predicted times. Use them to hit your
personal targets - and be sure to say thanks once you’ve
TOP TIPS
NUTRITION
1. Maintain a normal high carbohydrate training
diet in the week up to the race. Whatever your
breakfast choice on the morning of the event, try
it ahead of your long training runs. You’ll need
food that settles well and fuels you.
2. Practise drinking on training runs – hydration is
a fine balance. Don’t start the event dehydrated,
but ensure you drink through the event according
to your thirst. You may not need to drink at every
drinks station.
FUELLING YOUR RUN
iPro Sport is the official supplier of isotonic drinks
for the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon Series in 2016.
iPro Sport contains sodium and other minerals lost
through sweat during exercise, helping runners to
rehydrate and providing fuel for working muscles.
Its combination of sodium and carbohydrates
encourages fluid absorption and the maintenance
of fluid balance.
Unlike many other isotonic drinks, iPro Sport is
all-natural with no artificial flavours, no artificial
colours and no artificial sweeteners.
iPro Sport will be available at the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon-Sheffield
just after the finish – don’t forget to pick up your bottle.
You can now also buy iPro Sport online at www.ipro.direct/runforall
at a special discounted rate.
TRAINING
BE PREPARED
1. As race day approaches, make
sure you have trained in the kit
you intend to wear so you know it
doesn’t chafe or give you blisters.
Race day is not the time to break in
new shoes!
2. Visualise race day in training: See
yourself running a strong race
and one where you achieve your
personal targets. Being mentally fit
will allow your body to perform.
1
2
Be organised and equipped:
Check the weather forecast, and ensure you
have the right kit in your bag. Leave plenty of
time to get to the start, so you can stay relaxed,
calm and focussed.
Find your motivation:
Whatever your reason or reasons for running,
remind yourself of them regularly and never lose
sight of what crossing that finish line means to you.
