Holliston Dancers Step Their Way
into World Championship
Team Takes First Place in Category in Irish World Dancing Championships
By J.D. O’Gara
It’s one thing to enter a dance competition. It’s quite
another to become the world champions in your category,
especially when you’re a U.S. team competing
with Irish and Scottish teams in the Irish World Dancing
Championships in Glascow, Scotland. Holliston
teens Emma Schiller, a junior at Montrose School in
Medfield, and Meghan Evans, a senior at Holliston
High School, traveled to Scotland over the Easter
weekend for the Irish World Dancing Championships.
Their team placed FIRST in the world in the senior
girls Ceili competition.
“It was amazing; it was really cool. I felt we were
going to do well, but I didn’t know we were going to get
first, so it was really exciting,” says Evans.
Both dancers, who are top notch in their own right,
dance with the Harney Academy of Irish Dance in
Walpole, Mass. under two-time World Champion
Liam Harney. Each has been dancing since she was
4-years-old.
“I’ve actually qualified eight years now to compete,”
says Schiller, who’s been to Scotland twice for event, as
well as Philadelphia, Dublin, Glascow and Montreal.
“It was in Boston once,” she adds. Evans has been to
seven world competitions.
Schiller explains that to qualify to go to world, you
must receive a top 12th placement in your regional
completion, called “Orieachtas,” or a top 15th placement
in your nation.
Emma Schiller and Meghan Evans, both of Holliston,
became world champions with six other dancers
from the Harney Academy of Irish Dance in Walpole,
Mass. over Easter weekend in the Irish Dancing World
Championships, this year in Scotland.
Annual SpringFest
Saturday, May 14
By J.D. O’Gara
The Saturday after
Mother’s Day will be a
busy time in Holliston. It’s
the date of the 2016 Holliston
Business Association’s
Annual SpringFest,
from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., a
day when neighbors can
come out to see each other
after a long hibernation,
and businesses can get a
kick-start to the summer
season.
“It’s a perfect time,” says
John Paltrineri, of Fiske’s
General Store, who’s on
the planning committee
along with Kristen Hafford
and Donna Cady.
“We’re counting on the
weather to be good, and
rather than do it too early,
where it snowed on our
SpringFest, we decided on
after Mother’s Day, before
Father’s Day, before things
get crazy for June. May is
a better month, to move
forward, so we’ll probably
continue in May.”
Down at Blair Square
and the rail trail, there will
be the annual flea market,
run by Bobby Blair and
the traditional s’mores
by Holliston Boy Scouts.
Holliston in Bloom will be
running a Fairy and Toad
Garden contest and fundraiser,
as well as offer face
painting, for a fee, and a
free marigold potting
(while supplies last), and
that will be set up right
next to Kilkelly Farm’s
petting zoo.
Over at the Gilman
room at the Holliston
Public Library, Mary
Greendale and other
members of the 8-Arch
Bridge Restoration Project
will feature the artwork of
local elementary students
Mall Display Schools Parents
on Hidden Drugs
Community Initiative to Help Parents Spot Signs of Substance Use
By J.D. O’Gara
HDAAC, Holliston
Drug and Alcohol
Awareness Coalition,
will join other Metrowest
anti-drug
community coalitions
in presenting “Hidden
in Plain Sight,”
a recreation of a teen
bedroom set up at
the Natick Mall designed
to help parents
and other adults over
21 spot signs of substance
abuse. Specially
trained “tour guides” from MetroWest
community coalitions
will walk participants through
the display, providing education
about adolescent development
and common signs of substance
use.
“The bedroom will be full of
20-30 different “warning signs”
including drug paraphernalia
and signs of other risky behavior.
To go alongside the event,
HDAAC will have a much
smaller display at the Spring Festival
to help parents identify high
risk items in their own homes,”
says Gina Stucchi, of HDAAC.
The display will be open to
the public on weekdays from
May 9-26, with a kickoff event
on May 10, at 10 a.m. Hours are
as follows:
• Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays: 5-9 p.m.
• Tuesdays and Thursdays:
10 a.m.-2 p.m.
• Select weekend dates of
Saturday, May 21st and
Sunday, May 22nd, 12-4
p.m.
“During their visit, parents
will be hands-on with the display
to find hidden items. There will
also be a script to go along with
the tour of the bedroom. It’s really
an awesome display and we
are very lucky that the Natick
Mall donated the empty store
and the furniture to our cause,”
says Stucchi.
HDAAC’s SpringFest booth
will feature drawers full of items
typically found in a teen’s room,
and organizers will ask parents to
pick out five items that may suggest
high risk behavior.
“The training for Hidden in
Plain Sight really opened our eyes
to some of the items we may not
think of as high risk. Some of the
items may not be risky alone, but
when multiple items are found, it
could suggest high risk behavior.
For example: Red Bull may not
be considered too risky, but if you
notice an abnormal increase in
red bull cans in your teens room
along with missed curfews and
slipping grades, then it may suggest
the Red Bull is being used to
get your teen up in the morning
after they stay out late at night
using substances,” says Stucchi.
“We are trying to help parents
connect the dots before the risky
behavior turns into a bad habit
or lifestyle.”
Holliston Athletic Boosters Brings
Bubble Soccer to Metrowest
By J.D. O’Gara
Who wouldn’t want to at least
watch grown people don giant,
inflatable bubbles and bump
each other around while attempting
to get a soccer ball into a
goal? Holliston Athletic Boosters
Association is bringing the crazy
fun of bubble soccer to the area
for the first time with
Holliston’s first Bubble
Soccer Tournament, to
take place from 1-4 p.m.
on Saturday, May 14, at
Kamitian Field in Holliston.
“My son did it in college
at their spring weekend
last year, and he said
it was so much fun,”
says HABA President
Jill Sykes, “You have to
explains that the players must be
tall enough to be able to bend
their legs inside the bubble. The
event welcomes adults of any
age, in particular recent graduates
who might be home from
college. Teams of 6-8 adventurous
souls of any gender will play
“I’m really excited to be able
to try something so different,”
says event organizer Alice Mc-
Callum, who has three kids involved
in Holliston sports. “We
usually get really good support
because everyone supports what
HABA is doing, but everyone is
really excited about this simply
because it’s fun. Even
people who don’t realize
what HABA does
are excited about
coming out.”
Four players at a
time line up at opposite
ends of the field
and a soccer ball is
placed in the middle.
When the whistle is
blown, players charge
toward the ball in an
attempt to score on
their opponents while knocking
them out of the way. There are
no goalies.
Bubble soccer started as a
gag on a Norwegian TV show,
but when video of it went viral
on YouTube, people everywhere
began to try it. It is now popular
in Norway, Italy, Austria, and
other countries, and has generated
around 40 leagues in the
U.S. (People curious about what
it looks like can find videos online
of Jimmy Fallon giving it a go on
“Late Night” with Colin Farrell
and Chris Pratt.)
“We’re encouraging families
to stop by for the entertainment
On May 14, the day of the Holliston SpringFest, HABA will present
Internet-famous Bubble Soccer. The fundraiser will be as much fun to
watch as it will be to play and will take place on Kamitian Field from
1-4 p.m. Photos provided by MA Sports Leagues.
value,” says Sykes, of the fundraiser.
“We’ll have our concession
stand open for lunch food.”
Complete rules and information
are available on HABA’s
web site, (https://sites.google.
com/site/habaholliston/ ). Entry
is $150 per team, and proceeds
benefit HABA (a nonprofit organization)
and the Holliston High
School athletic programs it supports.
Registrations must be received
by May 11.
“HABA’s mission is to provide
opportunities for parents,
alumni, and friends to support
all interscholastic sports teams at
HHS,” said HABA President Jill
Sykes, noting the organization
supports 26 teams at the high
school level. “We do that by providing
funding for field and field
house improvements and specialized
sports equipment, and by
supporting teams’ own efforts for
events such as Senior Nights. We
also provide four $500 scholarships
each year to college-bound
senior athletes that have been
HABA members.”
HABA raises its funds through
member dues, concession income
and fundraising events
like this bubble tournament, says
Sykes. Each sport has a liaison on
the HABA committee.
“We provide money and all
the athletic achievement awards
for their banquets, do all the banner
updates in the Fieldhouse; we
built the concession stand, have
done such field improvements,
updated the press box, bought
training equipment and Panther
team chairs, paid for bleachers.
Since 2006, we have spent
$205,000 on improvements,”
says Sykes.
DANCERS
continued from page 1
“At regionals, I got 5th place
(in solos), and then Meghan actually
won her regional competition,”
says Schiller. “At the
national competition, I got 8th
place, and Meghan got third.”
The girls’ team of 8 did win
its regional competition. Schiller
explains that getting eight
dancers of this high a quality
together can be difficult, but,
“it just happened this year,
now that we’re all older and do
competitions and a few other
girls were willing to travel over
and compete with us.” The
other team members came
from Norfolk, Sherborn, Mansfield,
Walpole Rhode Island.
Once at the competition,
Schiller explains that there are
hundreds of dancers competing,
and there were scores of
teams competing in the same
category as their team.
“There’s just a lot of people,”
says Schiller, explaining
that teams perform in front of
seven judges. Winning there
was significant, she says, “especially
when it comes to overseas
competition, home teams
have the upper hand when it
comes to jet lag, and a lot of
overseas judges own the different
dance schools. There’s all
sorts of things that play into
that.” After competing in a
round, the top 50% of teams
get called back. After the second
round, scores are calculated.
“What was most exciting
was the team right in front of
us, their scores were being said
right before ours, they were
phenomenal, a Scottish team
that were phenomenal,” says
To participate, complete a reservation form
at Fiske’s General Store or The Candy Cottage,
or download it from hollistonbusinessnessassociation.com
and drop it off to John Paltrineri
(Fiske’s) or Donna Cady (Candy Cottage) with
a check made payable to the Holliston Business
Association.
If you have questions or would like more
information, email Donna at thecandycottage1950@yahoo.com
or call (508) 429-5544
or call John at (508) 429-4041.
Schiller. “I think we all thought
so.” The final score for that
Scottish team, however, was
412.5, and Schiller and Evans’
team received 415.
Both dancers say the experience
is life changing, worth the
15-20 hours of dance and cross
training they need to do each
week.
“It’s fun to come together
with people who share the
same love as you. It’s fun, a
crazy atmosphere. We’re all
teenagers, all excited to be
there,” says Schiller.
“I love traveling around
the world,” says Evans, who
is headed to UMass Amherst
this fall. “It’s really cool and
I probably wouldn’t do that
otherwise as much, and I love
all my friends at dance. It just
keeps me really motivated to
do many things.”
The team is also regularly
“The honest truth is, we are
really lucky, but luck will only
take you so far,” says Cohen, who
regularly travels to New York to
really, really good at what we
do.” Cohen, who says she wants
her local clients to be able to
come into her studio and really
feel at home. “We want everyone
to be able to afford amazing hair
that’s why we offer three different
levels of pricing, we have an
extensive training program for
Jr. Stylists and that is reflected in
their pricing.”
Her staff, she says, “will do
your daughter’s hair for prom,
but also get Miss Greece ready
for the cover of Boston Wedding
Magazine,” says Cohen. “We’ll
give the perfect blonde highlight,
and then we’ll go do a commercial
for Reebok. You’re going to
get that Hollywood treatment.
You’re going to get that red carpet
like a million bucks when they
leave, like it’s never looked so
good,” says Cohen.
Boy Scout Beautifies Holliston PD for Eagle Project
By J.D. O’Gara
If you’ve been past the Holliston
Police Department lately,
you’ll notice that it’s been
spruced up. That’s thanks to Boy
Scout Brandon Battick, of Holliston
Boy Scout Troop 73. The
17-year-old student at Holliston
High School decided to beautify
the police station property as his
project to earn Eagle Scout, the
highest rank a Boy Scout can
earn.
“So what we’re doing, we’re
beautifying the police station,
planting flowers, cutting down
weeds, kind of tuning it up,”
says Battick. “I was looking for
a thing to do, and I noticed the
police station. There was nothing
to it; it was just sort of dead
bushes and stuff, and I thought,
there’s an opportunity right
there.” Battick says with Memorial
Day coming up, he thought
it would be great to improve the
spot.
Battick says he got a lot of
advice from Mr. Ahronian, from
Ahronian Landsaping.
“They’re helping a lot—and
donating compost,” says Battick
The landscaper helped Battick
mark out beds weith spraypaint,
and later the flowers were donated
by Holliston in Bloom.
In mid-April, Battick recruited
a number of people from
his troop to come out on a weekend
and help.
After getting his project approved
by the Boy Scout council,
Battick will now have to submit
more paperwork on how the
process went.
“It’s the final step to Boy
Scouts,” says Battick. “It’s the
big thing. There’s all kinds of
ranks to build up.” Battick says
Boy Scout Brandon Bettick decided to beautify Holliston Police Station
for his Eagle Project.
he has been in Boy Scouts for
seven years.
“I just kind of enjoyed being
outside and just camping. It
was just fun being with all your
friends and stuff and just going
on all these adventures. There’s
a lot of stuff we do, but simple
camping in the woods where we
bring tents, those are my favorite,
because they feel laid back,”
says Brandon. He adds that the
troop has also done things like
indoor rock climbing, Sky Zone,
summer Boy Scout camp and
Arcadia. “And those are just a
few of them,” he says.
Since he’s been a scout, says
Battick, the numbers of Boy
Scouts in town has risen. He says
he’s worked with leaders including
Mike Tyman, Brian Ogilve
and Chris Flanagan.
“It’s insane, it’s grown so
much. People just keep coming,”
he says.
Brandon Battick worked with
Mark Ahronian to spruce up
Holliston Police Station grounds
in mid-April for his Eagle
project.
Vesta’s Community
Shredding Day
Honoring Earth Day
Vesta Real Estate Group’s 5th
annual Community Shredding
Day will be held on Saturday, May
21st from 9 a.m. to Noon. Held
at the parking lot of the Holliston
High School, it is a great opportunity
to recycle and repurpose
many items around the house.
Vesta Real Estate Group of
Keller Williams Realty hosts this
event in Holliston, making it free
of charge to residents. “We saw
this event in another community
and felt it was a terrific idea
to bring to Holliston,” says Vesta
Team member Ed Daniels, “The
participation has grown every year
and we really enjoy celebrating
Earth Day with residents in this
way.”
Activities that take place at this
event include:
• On-site, secure Shredding of
personal documents
• Donations of Clothing, Shoes, &
Books to Habitat for Humanity
A large on-site shredding truck
from iShred allows you to watch
your personal documents being
shred right in front of you. Last
year we filled the shredding truck
15 minutes before shutting down
the event. Let’s fill it again this
year!
Vesta Real Estate Group is
happy to announce a partnership
with Habitat for Humanity for this
year’s event. Habitat for Humanity
is a non-profit organization
building 2 homes in Holliston.
Representatives will be on hand to
collect clothing, shoes, books, etc.
All financial donations collected at
the event will also be passed along
to the local Habitat chapter.
In year’s past, we have also offered
electronics recycling, but the
Tickets on Sale for Knights of Columbus Annual Raffle
Proceeds from the Event Support Pantry Shelf,
Senior Center and Veterans’ Organizations
By J.D. O’Gara
Now’s the time to get your
raffle ticket for the St. Mary’s
Knights of Columbus Council
#14224 8th Annual Charity
Raffle. The drawing for the raffle
is coming up on Tuesday, June
15, 2016, and you could have a
chance to win some great cash
prizes, totaling $2,000, including
a $1,000 First Prize, $500
Second Prize, $250 Third Prize,
$150 Fourth Prize and $100 Fifth
Prize. Proceeds help the organization,
which began this local
chapter in 2007, support community
causes.
“Our major beneficiaries are
the Holliston Pantry Shelf, the
Holliston Senior Center, and veteran’s
organizations – this year
Homes for Troops and possibly
another one,” says Tom Anguish,
the Knights of Columbus member
who began the charity raffle.
“Last year, with a combination
of our Raffle and our annual
Wine and Beer Tasting
Night in the Fall, we were able
to donate over $20,000,” says
Anguish, including $5,000 each
to the Holliston Pantry Shelf,
Holliston Senior Center and
veterans’ organizations, as well
as a combined $5,000 in other
donations. In total, the Knights
of Columbus have been able to
donate over $100,000 from the
funds of its raffle since it began
seven years ago, which translates
to over $32,000 for the Holliston
Pantry Shelf, $22,600 to the
Senior Center, $24,600 to veterans’
organizations, $8,000 to
St. Mary’s Parish and $20,000
to other causes, which include
among others, Eagle Scout projects,
Special Olympics, wheelchairs
for veterans, and Wreaths
Across America.
This year, Anguish is running
the raffle with Hal Scaramella,
Aaron Pyman, and Ryland
Hanstad, three of the 55 members
of the Catholic men’s group,
most of whom (94%) helped out
with the raffle in some way last
year, from selling certificates to
donating. The group is also looking,
for the first time this year, for
ways to help support Habitat for
Humanity (www.habitatmwgw.
org).
“They’re as dedicated as I
am,” says Anguish, “and if I
could raise $50,000 I would.
Amy porter, from the Holliston
Pantry Shelf, says, “We
are extremely grateful for that
so many people from our community
join together as a unified
group for just one of many worthy
causes and that we are one of
the recipients of their efforts. Accepting
the check from Knights
of Columbus, year after year in
front of the crowd at Celebrate
Holliston is an honor and provides
a great example of volunteerism
for people of all ages. We
truly appreciate their dedication
and commitment to helping our
organization fight hunger in Holliston.”
Anguish notes that in February,
the Holliston Pantry Shelf
supported 214 families in Holliston.
“The $5,000 we donated lasts
almost 2 weeks,” he says. “Their
budget is $2,800 a week on groceries,
down from $3,700 last
year since they partnered with
New location.
New deals.
89B West Main Street (Next to Starbucks)
Hopkinton 508-497-0700
the Greater Boston Food Bank,
but 86 cents of every dollar donated
goes to groceries, and their
donations last year were 40%
lower than in 2014. The rest is
for rent, the van and other expenses.
There’s no paid staff,”
says Anguish.
The donation to the Senior
Center goes a long way as well.
“We are extremely appreciative
and grateful to have that
$5,000. I don’t know if people
know how it helps our seniors in
Holliston. The money is used for
wellness programs, lunches and
other special events. There’s no
town funding for any of those
programs,” says Jean Boulette,
director of the Holliston Senior
Center, who explains, “Our senior
center budget is used only for
salaries and operating expenses
of the building. (The donation)
really helps the seniors. We can
offer more free programs, such as
the one with Gary Highlander in
May and then in June.
The Knights of Columbus
present their donations to the
Pantry Shelf and Senior Center
at the annual Celebrate Holliston
event. Veterans’ donations
are made on Veteran’s Day, and
Anguish says other donations are
made when appropriate.
The Knights of Columbus
will sell no more than 6,000 tickets
for this raffle, and tickets are
$5 each or a book of 5 for $20.
You must be 18 years or older to
purchase a ticket. There are no
refunds, but the sponsor reserves
the right to refund ticket price in
lieu of awarding prizes if insufficient
number of tickets are sold,
and taxes are the sole responsibility
of the winners, who need not
be present to win.
You can purchase a ticket
from any member of the Holliston
Pinecrest Golf Course, Then and Now
Thirty Years Has Seen a Big Change,
Thanks to Grassroots Effort
By J.D. O’Gara
Thirty years ago, Pinecrest
Golf Course looked a lot different.
And as always, there’s a story
about its transformation.
In 1986, a developer offered
its then owner person $1 million
to buy the 181-acre parcel
New England
of land and turn the property
into a development of townhouses.
Deb Moore, chair of the
Pinecrest Golf Course Advisory
Committee, remembers it well.
“I had read an article on the
front page of the Metrowest Daily
News that this was coming before
the town, and I initiated a grassroots
movement in town. We got
a petition and got 750 signatures
in three days and went before a
Board of Selectmen’s meeting.
So many came they had to hold
the meeting up for 30 minutes
while people checked in,” Moore
remembers. The petition encouraged
the town of Holliston to exercise
its right of first refusal and
purchase the land.
Once the town decided to
purchase the property, the next
step was figuring out the best way
to run it. Moore was selected to
chair the committee of seven that
would research how it would operate.
“I was only non-golfer and
the only female at the time. We
looked at about 10 other golf
courses in the New England area
and made a proposal to selectmen
on how to run it, which they
adopted, and they still use that
model today,” she says, noting
that the golf course is leased to
Johnson Management and the
clubhouse restaurant is leased
to John Ficco. With this model,
rather than being supported by
the town, the golf course brings
$50,000 to $60,000 to the town’s
general fund every year.
And it boasts a big change.
“Over that course of time
to the present, we’ve done numerous
capital improvements,”
says Moore, who is on the committee
along with Larry Wise,
Bob Smith, Sylvia Stickney and
Chrysso Lawless. (There are two
open spots.)
“We have built the new clubhouse,
pro shop, new maintenance
building. We’ve put in two
parking lots and a septic system
(completed in 2001), built a practice
range, the best in the area,
all sodded.” Moore notes that
the committee even refurbished
a well at the top of the practice
range, and then had the pond on
the golf course dug out to make it
deeper. “We pump water
from the well to the
pond, and put in a new
irrigation system to the
course, with water that
is in the pond.” The golf
course also features new
tees and boasts a tree
planting program that
adds not only beauty, but
safety for golfers as well.
Deb and John Moore
have also put a lot of
sweat into beautifying
the course.
When asked, Deb
Moore concedes that the
work she has done for the golf
course is all voluntary. “Over the
years, I’ve probably put in thousands
and thousands of hours,
since 1987,” she laughs, and adds
that she is still not a golfer. What
she is, however, is a lover of flowers.
“As I was doing projects, I
thought I should start planting
flowers to spruce the place up. I
started doing that more than 25
years ago,” says Moore, who says
she has worked alongside her
husband, John, who is the “muscle”
of the flower-planting duo.
“I couldn’t do it without him,”
GOLF
continued from page 12
she says.
The effort began with simple
planters and hanging baskets on
what Moore calls “the shack of
a clubhouse we had.” After the
new clubhouse was built, she
had a vision of a white fence
with plantings on both sides, and
when that came to fruition, she
says, “I started getting carried
away, putting window boxes on
decks, and planters, and doing
walkways, and then I have flowers
planted on all 18 holes.”
Caring for the plantings takes
up so much of the Moores’ time
that the couple, who own a vacation
property, often find that
they must take turns retreating
to their summer home in order
for one of them to take care of
all the plantings.
“It’s just us, and then we have
to water. Watering takes
probably four days a week,
and then of course we have
to fertilize, and we have
to go out and shop for the
plants,” says Moore.
The effort has paid off.
Not only does the property
look exceptionally beautiful,
but America in Bloom
judges gave Pinecrest
awards for their efforts
twice. In addition, Deb
Moore was recognized as a
Celebrate Holliston “Citizen
of the Year” in 2001.
Moreover, Moore derives
a lot of satisfaction
Dr. Bradley Denker as
Chief of Nephrology
Atrius Health, in Newton,
Mass., is pleased to announce
that Dr. Bradley Denker, of Holliston,
has been named as the organization’s
Chief of Nephrology.
Dr. Denker has worked at Atrius
Health since 2000 when he joined
its Harvard Vanguard Medical
Associates practice. As Chief, Dr.
Denker will lead the Atrius Health
Nephrology Department, which
offers comprehensive care to patients
with various kidney-related
problems, including chronic kidney
disease, electrolyte disorders,
kidney stones, and peritoneal dialysis,
among many others.
Dr. Denker practices at Harvard
Vanguard’s Boston Kenmore
office located near Fenway. A
graduate of the State University of
New York Medical School in Syracuse,
NY, Dr. Denker completed
his internal medicine residency at
the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore,
Maryland. He completed
a one-year fellowship in hematology
in the laboratory of Dr. Peter
Agre (2003 Nobel Laureate for
the discovery of Aquaporins) at
Johns Hopkins before completing
his nephrology fellowship at the
Brigham and Women’s Hospital
from 1988-1992. Dr. Denker is
also an associate professor of medicine
at Harvard Medical School
and the clinical chief in the renal
division at Beth Israel Deaconess
Medical Center.
from seeing what the golf course,
located right in her back yard
as it abuts her property, get use
from the town. ”Quite a few people
ski, skate and snowshoe, so it
gets used all four seasons, which
is nice,” says Moore. “So many
people from town of all ages golf
there, from the very youngest to
our senior citizens,” she says.
“It’s a very busy place.”
One of Moore’s favorite
things, she says, is seeing “people
from the town up there enjoying
themselves. Sometimes in our
busy lives, we don’t get to enjoy
ourselves or enjoy our neighbors.
It’s lovely to be able to sit up
there, on the deck in the fresh air,
watching golfers and enjoying
each other’s company… that’s
really the best thing for me.”
I went to Skin Smart a little over a year ago as my last ditch effort to
treat my acne. I had tried almost every acne treatment out there and
was still struggling. When I went to Skin Smart my acne was at the
worst it had ever been. I was a little reluctant that anything was going
to help but within a few months I started seeing improvements.
A year later and my skin has neverlooked so good! I am so grateful
Most people think acne is a teenage condition. The truth is, many people continue to experience
acne well into adulthood.
Acne is mostly an inherited genetic condition that is caused by too much oil and excess shedding
of skin cells inside the pores. Many acne prone individuals start to experience break outs during
puberty when the follicles mature. Acne often occurs in males during adolescence because of surging
testosterone, an oil producing hormone, but women can experience acne for the first time in
their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s without ever having had it as a teen.
Several factors can contribute to adult acne:
Hormonal Fluctuations. Hormones stimulate oil production. Women’s hormones fluctuate
throughout their lives with ovulation, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause.
Medications. Adult acne can occur with the use of medications like anabolic steroids, thyroid
medications and some brands of birth control.
Stress. It stimulates the adrenal glands which release testosterone stimulating oil production.
Pore Clogging Ingredients. For those who are acne prone, some ingredients found in cleansers,
moisturizers, shaving creams, make-up and shampoos can aggravate acne.
Environmental Influences. Poor diet and certain work environments.
There is no quick fix for acne, but it can be controlled with proper home care, professional treatments
and modified lifestyle habits.
The Boston Molasses Flood,
Thursday, June 16, 1 p.m.
In the early afternoon of January
15, 1919, a fifty-foot steel tank
filled with over two million gallons
of molasses collapsed in Boston’s
North End sending its sticky contents
in a fifteen-foot wave through
the neighborhood streets. The disaster
was blamed on immigrant
anarchists. The event knocked
Prohibition and the end of World
War I out of the headlines and resulted
in a huge civil law suit that
was not resolved until 1925.
Free Dental Screening for Adults 60+
The Free Dental Screening
clinic has been underwritten by a
grant from the Attleboro Rotary
Club and is funded in part by a
grant from Bristol Elder Services,
Inc. through contracts with the
Massachusetts Executive Office
of Elder Affairs and by a grant
from United Way of Greater Attleboro/Taunton.
Volunteer Dentists Mark Stone, DMD, MScD, Paul Hubley, DMD, and Tim Hempton, DDS, with Massasoit
Community College Dental Assistant Director and Students at the Free Dental Screening Clinic
A free dental screening clinic
for senior citizens will be held
in Attleboro on Saturday, May
7 from 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at
the Rev. Larsen Senior Center,
25 South Main Street in Attleboro.
To schedule your free appointment
at the screening, call
the Attleboro Council on Aging
at (774) 203-1906. Appointments
are open to any older adult, age
60 or over, from any town.
At the free screening clinic,
participants will receive a dental
screening exam and have the opportunity
to discuss the findings
with the dentist in the clinic’s relaxed,
friendly setting. Dentists
from our area, including Dr. Donald
Pierce, have volunteered to examine
patients for problems with
their teeth, gums, and dentures.
Participants will also be screened
for oral cancers and have the opportunity
to receive free denture
cleaning and labeling provided by
students from the Massasoit Community
College’s Dental Assisting.
Students will also offer tips and
answer questions about good oral
hygiene. All students are under
the supervision of their instructor
as they participate in the screening
clinic.
Nutritional information will
be provided about food choices
to those experiencing chewing
problems, dry mouth, medication
interactions, and other concerns.
“More than three-quarters
of older adults in Massachusetts
don’t have dental insurance,” explains
Dr. Donald Pierce, a North
Attleboro dentist and planning
committee co-chair. “Many of
the seniors who attended the free
screening clinic haven’t been to
a dentist in a while, so they have
concerns they want to discuss. At
the screening clinic we take time
to talk with them and answer their
questions.”
It is the mission of the Elder
Dental Program to support oral
health prevention and education
for seniors. Studies have shown
that lack of oral health care can
Holliston DI Makes a Historic
Run to Global Finals
On May 25th, ten Holliston
High School students will travel
to Knoxville, TN to compete
in the 2015-2016 Destination
Imagination Global Finals at the
University of Tennessee. But before
any of these talented teens
step foot on a plane, they will
already have made history, not
once, but twice.
Destination Imagination is a
not-for-profit organization that
teaches students of all ages creative
problem-solving through
innovative challenges and competitions.
Every year, hundreds
of elementary, middle-school
and high school teams from
across Massachusetts compete
in regional tournaments, then
MADI State Finals, vying for the
right to represent the Bay State at
Globals. But in what may well be
a first for the state, this year one
town will send two teams from
the same age group to compete
in Global Finals in the same challenge.
As if that wasn’t enough,
John’s
family owned and operated for 45 years
one of those teams will also compete
in a second challenge as
well.
Karin Knapik has been involved
with Destination Imagination
for decades, first as a
competitor, then as a team manager,
and now as the Affiliate
Director for Massachusetts DI
and even she can’t remember a
showing like this. “I would say it
is very rare if it has happened at
all.”
At the MADI State Finals,
the “Creative-a-trees” team of
Joshua Perlmutter, Ariana Ameli,
Ryan Cahill, Abby Meltzer, Kent
Perlmutter, and James Crews
took part in two different events,
one a service-learning task, the
other an improvisation challenge.
The four seniors and two
sophomores finished second in
the state in the former, and were
crowned champions in the latter,
earning the right to attend
Global Finals and compete in
both events against teams from
But they quickly learned they
wouldn’t be alone, as the “Accidental
Peanuts,” comprised of
HHS sophomores Maria Gentile,
Olivia Palmer, Hazel Peters
and Jenna Pralat, finished right
behind them in the Improv challenge,
punching their ticket to
Knoxville as well.
“I really didn’t fully comprehend
what was happening,” admits
Peters, thinking back to the
awards ceremony at the state
tournament, when the two teams
were called up to the podium in
succession. “It was unreal because
I knew it was such a rare
occurrence.”
With nearly two months
between the State Finals and
Global Finals, the teams have
plenty of work to do, and not all
of it involves practicing their performance
skills and flexing their
creative muscles. Fundraising to
defray the cost of making the trip
to Tennessee will take up even
more time and creativity.
Kristine Perlmutter, team
manager of the Creative-a-trees
and the MADI Region Seven
Coordinator, has tallied up the
costs and set an ambitious goal.
“With ten students heading to
the tournament, we’re trying to
raise $10,000 to cover their registration
and travel costs.”
The two teams will certainly
On Monday, April 16, Fiske’s General Store donated $345 to Holliston’s
Destination Imagination Teams, headed to the Global Finals in
go head-to-head against each
other at Globals, but in the
meantime, they’ve decided to
work together rather than compete
for local donations. All ten
students will combine their fundraising
efforts which will include
pink flamingo “flocking” on the
lawns of Holliston in the coming
weeks, and a May 6th “Kids
Night Out” event for 3rd-5th
graders at Miller Elementary
School.
“The members of the teams
will act as counselors for the
night,” according to the Accidental
Peanuts’ team manager,
Shawn Peters. “Parents can drop
their kids off and head out to dinner
while their kids play sports,
watch a movie, and even learn
improv games. It’ll be about the
same as a babysitter, but a lot
more fun, and for a better cause.”
With generous donations from
Holliston PTSA and Fiske’s General
Store, the teams are on their
way to their goals. Local businesses
and organizations that
would like to help sponsor their
efforts or community members
interested in their fundraising
events and initiatives can email
the teams at HollistonDI2016@
gmail.com .
By Memorial Day Weekend,
both teams will know how
they’ve stacked up against the
hundreds of other teams they’ll
face at Global Finals. But win or
lose at Globals, these ten teenagers
will know they’ve already
made a little bit of history, and
put Holliston on the map as an
unlikely creative capital in Massachusetts.
Holliston Boys Lacrosse Aims to
Move Ahead this Season
By Christopher Tremblay
The Holliston boy’s lacrosse
team is looking to improve upon
last year’s 5-13 season under first
year coach Anthony Karpouzis.
The team lost some talented seniors
from last year’s squad and
will find themselves very young
entering this year’s campaign.
“Honestly, I know that we
are a young team, with only 7
or 8 seniors, but our goal is to
be the best that we can be,” the
new Panther Coach said. “We
may even find ourselves playing
spoiler for some as the year goes
on, but our ultimate goal is to get
into the tournament.”
Although early in the season
the Panthers find themselves sitting
at 1-2 through the first three
games. In its most recent contest
Holliston caught Wayland off
guard and went into the half with
a 5-4 lead, but eventually fell 8-6.
“We play in the Tri-Valley
League with a lot of heavy
teams,” Karpouzis said. “I’m still
unfamiliar with all the teams, but
the tournament is on our radar.
If we surprise a few in addition
to winning the games that we
should, we’ll not only have a fun
season, but one that ends up in
the tournament.”
Karpouzis sees his team more
as a defensive squad that plays
every game tough; the offense
is starting to come together and
make this team a well rounded
one.
Leading the Panthers are its
quad captains in senior Zack
Spering (a well rounded defender
who does everything) and juniors
First-year coach Anthony Karpouzis plans to make the most of
Holliston’s young lacrosse team’s great defensive skills while
sharpening its offense this year.
Ben Salley (the team’s tough
guy, the enforcer who brings a
edge), Nate Haywood (text book
and analytical) and Dalton Ring
(midfielder). According to the
coach, each captain beings a different
aspect to the game.
As he mentioned earlier, Karpouzis
believes that at this time
in the season the defense is the
focal point giving the Panthers a
solid beginning to success. The
defense begins but also ends
with sophomore goalie William
“Wayne” Celorier.
“Wil is a big kid who covers a
lot of net; he’s very vocal and has
great reflexes,” the coach said.
“He’s good at what he does. He’s
not shy about bringing the ball
up field and is a very big asset to
this team, especially being only a
sophomore.”
Offensively, Holliston will look
to senior attack Ryan Jensen, junior
midfielders Ring, who is also
one of the team’s faceoff specialist,
and Ryan Vazza, the one who
brings the lumber. Karpouzis will
also lean heavily on senior Nick
Skarmeas and junior Mike Alibrandi
for offensive support.
One other key cog to the
team’s success will be junior attack
man Sam Goldberg.
“He’s a ranked wrestler with a
low center of gravity that brings a
different aspect to the game,” the
coach said. “He’s not only solid,
but one hell of an athlete.”

Baker Now Holliston’s A.D.
Without ‘Interim’ Label
Sports
By Ken Hamwey
The process took five weeks,
but in the end, the “interim’’
label no longer applies to Matt
Baker, who’s been Holliston’s
athletic director since last August.
The 37-year-old Baker became
the Panthers’ A.D. through
2018 after interviews with a
10-member search committee
and later with three principals,
and after a public forum where
he answered a variety of questions.
“I’m thrilled to be on board
without the “interim label,’’ said
Baker who was selected from a
pool of numerous candidates.
“This is the outcome I hoped for,
and we’re already deep into the
planning for next year.’’
Last August, Baker was selected
on an interim basis to replace
Craig Najarian, who took
the A.D. post at Catholic Memorial.
A former Ashland High
three-sport star, Baker earned a
Bachelors degree from Assumption
College where he majored
in communications. He later
earned his Masters degree from
Framingham State in public administration.
Baker, who is married, has
four children and lives in Holliston,
has some specific goals for
the future. “I’d like to see participation
numbers increase for
some teams, find ways to improve
some of our facilities, continue to
assemble a top-notch staff and
maintain the success that many
of our squads have achieved,’’
he said.
In his first few months on
the job last year, Baker was at
the helm of an ultra-successful
autumn season. Five of the
Panthers nine varsity teams competed
in tournaments and the
football contingent once again
brought home a Super Bowl
crown. The winter campaign
didn’t quite measure up to the
fall but the boys’ basketball team
finished 10-10 and split a pair of
tourney games after a 1-19 season
a year ago. Combining the
fall and winter seasons, Holliston
has played host to seven MIAA
tournament games so far.
Holliston currently has 27
varsity sports with three of them
— gymnastics, swimming and
girls ice hockey — competing as
co-op ventures. Skiing could become
the Panthers’ 28th varsity
offering. “There has been some
interest and we’re looking into
skiing as a possible addition,’’
Baker said. “Joining another
school as a co-op team may be
the way to go.’’
Since taking the A.D. reins,
Baker has hired five new coaches
(cheerleading, boys’ lacrosse,
boys’ hockey, boys’ indoor and
outdoor track and baseball).
And, there’s little doubt that the
recently-hired coaches and any
future appointees will understand
their roles when participation is
the topic.
“To increase our numbers, it’s
important to reach out to youth
programs,’’ Baker emphasized.
“There’s got to be a connection
with the coaches at the youth
level. We also have to promote
youth nights and inform parents
of what’s ahead. Also, we can
increase participation by publicizing
our programs to middle
school students and by using our
current student-athletes to promote
their sport to classmates.’’
Bakers hopes to keep athletic
fees, which are $225 across the
board, steady and stable. “We
want to keep fees manageable
for families and we would never
deny a student the opportunity to
compete,’’ Baker said. “Fees have
become a necessary evil, but we’ll
strive to keep them stable.’’
Baker previously worked for
two college athletic departments
— Framingham State University
and Mass. Bay Community
College. At Framingham State,
where he worked for 12 years, he
directed the intramural program
and was in charge of the recreation
center. He also dealt with
varsity sports programs, monitored
the equipment room and
served on a variety of athletic
committees.
Before arriving at Holliston,
Baker was the associate A.D. at
Mass. Bay in Wellesley where he
was responsible for scheduling
and eligibility. He also was an
academic advisor and served on
New, permanent HHS A.D. Matt Baker says he will strive to increase
player numbers by connecting with youth programs and keeping
playing fees steady for pressed families.
many college committees.
Baker says that being an A.D.
at the high school level differs
from college in a very distinct
way. “There’s more interaction
with the students and there’s definitely
more of a feeling of community,’’
Baker said. “There’s
more opportunities to be involved
with students’ activities.’’
Baker’s father, Dennis, currently
is in his second stint as
A.D. at Bellingham High, often
has been a great resource. It’s
that link that no doubt has prepared
him well for his role at
Holliston.
“Some of the key attributes
for being a good A.D. are patience,
organization, flexibility,
objectivity and being a good listener,’’
Matt Baker said.
Words to live by in a position
that is challenging and constantly
changing.
