EUROSAF
The European Sailing Federation (EUROSAF) is very proud that the 2009
EUROSAF Open & Women’s European Match Racing Championships are
being held jointly for the fi rst time, hosted by Match Racing Denmark, in
Middelfart, Denmark.
The fi rst three European Open Championships were held in Denmark in
the mid 1990’s, at the initiative of the Danish Sailing Association, and
in 2000 EUROSAF introduced the Women’s Championships. During the
intervening years both Championships have attracted top Match Racing
sailors, as well as promising new talent, many of whom are now ranked
amongst the top Match Racing sailors in the world, in the ISAF Match
Racing Ranking List.
EUROSAF were very pleased when they received the application from
Match Racing Denmark to host both Championship events in one location,
on the same dates. “We believe this is a great move forward for Match
Racing in Europe” said Dan Ibsen, Chairman of the EUROSAF Events Committee
“and provides an excellent opportunity to promote Match Racing
to everyone, whether they are new sailors, the public, or the media.”
“EUROSAF are delighted to see this new approach to the Championships
is being organised in Denmark, because it seems appropriate that
the country who founded the event should be hosting yet another sailing

innovation” said György Wossala, President of EUROSAF.
He continued, “bringing female and male match racing
sailors together will help the sport win new friends and
will encourage an exchange of ideas, and add to the enjoyment
of the event for all.
Match Racing Denmark is one of the largest Match Racing centres in
the world. They have a very high activity level, involving racing events
and commercial activities, such as corporate sailing, hosting company
and VIP events, and alike. This has illustrated that it is possible for sailing
to build and support sporting activities through a joint professional and
commercial project, which is very much to the benefi t of the sport. Other
countries would benefi t from the experience of what has been established
in Denmark.
EUROSAF are looking forward to the 2009 EUROSAF European Match Racing
Championships in Middelfart, Denmark and to an event which has
been given strong support from the town of Middelfart, Sport Event Fyn,
Sport Event Denmark and the Danish Sailing Association.
